FreeStuffsNG: Nigeria's major tax overhaul explained
Low-income households stand to benefit the most, as many will no longer have to pay income tax while also enjoying price relief on essentials. A typical family spending most of their income on rent, food and transport will see lower costs due to the VAT exemptions.
Small businesses should also see positive changes through more streamlined bureaucracy, which could help boost compliance and encourage informal traders to enter the tax system.
High-income individuals and luxury consumers may feel the pinch slightly, with higher VAT now expected on luxury goods and premium services, and capital gains tax imposed on large share sales.
Were the reforms necessary?
The government argued that the tax system was outdated, inefficient and unfairly harsh on the poor. Nigeria's tax-to-GDP ratio, a key measure of how much tax the country collects relative to its economy is just over 10%, far below the African average of 16–18%.
Tinubu's administration wants to grow that ratio to 18% by 2026 without raising taxes on basic goods or overburdening struggling citizens.
By simplifying tax rules and encouraging voluntary compliance, officials hope to raise more money for funding infrastructure and public services, such as healthcare and education, as well as reduce the reliance on borrowing money.
What are Nigerians saying? Many small business owners welcome the exemption from company income tax but say they remain wary of how it will be enforced in practice.
"I like that we won't have to pay company income tax any more. But honestly, I just hope they don't replace it with another levy we don't understand. Sometimes you pay tax but still get harassed by officials asking for different permits," says Chidinma, a small business owner in Lagos.
For low-income earners, the promise of cheaper essential goods like food, rent and electricity is encouraging, but many are reserving judgment.
While the new tax reforms promise relief for small businesses, economist Emmanuel Idenyi warns that the reality may be different unless enforcement practices change. He says overzealous implementation by tax authorities could undermine the government's good intentions.
"Even tax officials have revenue targets. So when you file, they reassess and add more. That's where businesses start struggling."
Meanwhile, Taiwo Oyedele, who chairs the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, struck a hopeful tone during a recent town-hall meeting.
"Ninety per cent of Nigerians support the tax reform bills," he said, but cautioned that "successful implementation will depend on awareness and trust".
There has been a muted reaction from opposition parties and unions.
The Sellers of essential goods and services such as food, healthcare, education, rent, power, and baby products will no longer have to charge a Value Added Tax (VAT), helping families better afford their basic needs.
Truths9ja: hmm 🧐 they are very stringent in their Laws and constitution. Still there are still preachers in the street of UK. I have watch videos on that.
Right BELOW is an example from 2019 of what I referred to in my other post here. It went viral in the United Kingdom and indeed around the world that year. Noise pollution, pointing his fingers in the faces of Police officers, and use of inappropriate language by the so-called Pentecostal street preacher were totally unacceptable even though he had been using that same spot to preach before the arrest.

TimeManager: The son of the late Chief MKO Abiola, Jamiu Abiola, has faulted former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido’s claim about President Bola Tinubu’s role in the June 12, 1993, presidential election crisis.
Lamido had recently alleged that Tinubu, a known member of the pro-democracy movement during the period, acted more as a “soldier of fortune” than a genuine advocate for the people’s mandate.
However, in a rebuttal, Jamiu Abiola described Tinubu as a frontline figure in the June 12 struggle who risked his life and committed personal resources to the cause.
He said contrary to claims that Tinubu played a marginal role, the former Lagos State governor was not only vocal but actively involved in resisting the annulment of the presidential election, which was widely believed to have been won by his father, Chief MKO Abiola.
Abiola said, “Tinubu was vocal and visible from the very beginning. As a senator in 1993, he publicly condemned the annulment on the Senate floor, calling it another coup d’état.”
According to him, Tinubu took a bold stance on August 19, 1993, when he spoke out against the annulment on the floor of the Senate, describing it as “another coup d’état,” at a time when many other politicians opted for silence or self-preservation.
“You would recall that most politicians were silent then, including those shouting today. Many were part of the establishment and chose to compromise, which is not a new thing to them. President Tinubu took the opposite route,” he added.
Highlighting further contributions, Abiola said Tinubu organised protests against the annulment and provided critical logistical support that facilitated his father’s return to Nigeria after an extended stay abroad.
Abiola stated, “Unlike others, he did not feel that my wealthy father should bear the financial burden of the resistance on his own. Guess what happened afterwards? The home of Senator Tinubu was bombed by regime loyalists.
“So, this was not someone sitting on the fence or playing both sides. He was putting himself on the frontlines from day one. Thus, he paid such a huge price and needed to escape to continue the struggle from abroad—which is exactly what he did.”
He recalled that Tinubu later fled into exile, where he continued the struggle, and recounted meeting him during that period in Maryland, United States.
Abiola also narrated a memorable encounter at Tinubu’s Maryland residence with the late Afenifere leader, Pa Abraham Adesanya.
“I was a witness because back then, I lived in the United States. One day I was in his house in Maryland, and lo and behold, a man came out of a room. I did not know who he was. He introduced himself as Pa Adesanya, and when I told him who I was, he went on to tell me about how he had been wrongly arrested for my mother’s killing and how Senator Bola Tinubu had been sponsoring the political struggle and looking out for people like him. It was an encounter I would never forget.
“I learned so much about the struggle that day and was convinced more than ever that my mother’s death would not bring it to an end,” he said.
Abiola added, “My father died for the June 12 mandate. My mother was assassinated fighting for its restoration. I know who stood with us when it mattered.
“President Tinubu was one of those who did—loudly, repeatedly, and at great personal cost. He didn’t wait for history to be written before joining the cause, as is the case with many people who served in a government in which my parents were ignored but chose to keep quiet.
“And he continues to honour the June 12 struggle, not just in word, but in how he leads.”
He noted that Tinubu recently conferred the Commander of the Federal Republic honour on his late mother, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, in recognition of her sacrifice.
“That same day, he also honoured Pa Alfred Rewane, Anthony Enahoro, Chima Ubani, Beko Ransome-Kuti, and others who gave everything for Nigeria’s democracy. It meant a lot—not just to me, but to the nation.
“These are not the actions of someone disconnected from the democratic struggle. These are the actions of someone who remembers, who respects, and who leads with that history in his heart and mind,” he said.
On a personal note, Abiola recalled how Tinubu flew him to Maiduguri for his wedding in 1999.
“He arrived at the airport before me and even slept in his house in Alausa to arrive at the airport on time. These are actions done by the best of people, and this kind of person is the right person to lead Nigeria for the next six years,” he added.
The son of the late Chief MKO Abiola, Jamiu Abiola, has faulted former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido’s claim about President Bola Tinubu’s role in the June 12, 1993, presidential election crisis.
Kudos to Jamiu for speaking up. 'Kola Abiola too has to come out and silence these insidious people forever to counter the misleading claims he made earlier.
Much respect to 'Dele Alake as well for his very succinct rebuttals to Sule Lamido's FALSE claims (definitely caused by some kind of amnesia because he's getting older) of a few days ago. It was indeed soothing to read for those of us who witnessed the sequence of live events leading up to the June 12 1993 President election cycle and after that.
Kudos again to the now President 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Pa Anthony Enahoro, Chief Alfred Rewane, Frank Ovie-Kokori, Chief Abraham Adesanya, the former NBA President Alao Aka-Basorun, 'Dele Alake, 'Bayo Onanuga, Air Commodore Dan Suleiman (Rtd), Col. Abubakar Umar (Rtd), Senator Shehu Sani, the now Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna, and a vast armada of people from investigative journalists, students, human rights activists, lawyers, etc, who fought gallantly against the highly corrupt military dictatorships to restore democracy in Nigeria as of 1999.
Truths9ja: Man counters a Christian preacher in the bus, preferred Traditional beliefs than Jesus beliefs.
Shey wahala no kon too much like this? A pastor was preaching in a traveling bus and this man started preaching his traditional culture too. Ee kon remain who go win 😩😭😂
That video was quite hilarious. Tbh, those random Xtian preachers who come on buses saying all sorts of things about other people and their faiths like the dude in the video should stay right in their own lanes and let others be.
Besides, all forms of public preaching MUST be totally BANNED in cosmopolitan (and metropolitan cities) such as Lagos.
You can't do this kind of noisy open air preaching in restricted areas in the United Kingdom for instance as that would amount to a disorderly conduct in the public space through noise pollution. Yes, they are that strict and some so-called Pentecostal preachers from Nigeria in the United Kingdom got stopped, cautioned and then got arrested for stubbornly trying to continue preaching.
While it was unclear when the scheme was devised, documents showed Mr Wike started allocating the lands to Joaquin days after a company named after him was registered in October 2024.
The company, Joaq Farms and Estates Ltd, was registered on October 10, 2024. Barely a week later, on October 17, 2024, Mr Wike allocated 350 hectares to the business via file number 155882 and certificate of occupancy number 0000162.
The company listed its address as 13, Thaba Tseka Street, Wuse II, with Thaba mispelled on the documents as Theba. The address has long been associated with Mr Wike and his numerous fronts in the Nigerian capital, The Gazette learnt.

zero8zero: The woman at the center of a controversial land ownership dispute in Lagos, Mrs. Olorunlogbon, has issued a scathing response to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of politicizing and misrepresenting facts surrounding a property demolition that recently gained public attention.
Obi had taken to his X handle to decry the demolition of a property he claimed belonged to his family. However, in a full-length statement, Mrs. Olorunlogbon accused Obi of peddling contradictions and misleading the public on a matter that is currently sub judice.
Full Statement from Mrs. Olorunlogbon:
“The Instagram post by Peter Obi, as shared by 'lindakejiblogofficial', is highly lopsided as it is just an ornamented account of a biased individual.
The post seeks to sway public opinion on a land matter that is subjudice.
In one breath, Mr. Peter Obi claims the property in question belongs to his family. In another narrative, Mr. Peter Obi claims the property belongs to his brother, who, until now, is faceless. In another statement, Mr. Peter Obi claims the property belongs to a company in which his brother works.
The truth now appears to be that Mr. Peter Obi is not connected with the property at all but is hired to use his personality and media contacts to politicize and sensationalize a matter that is under judicial view.
Nigeria is not a lawless country, but certain persons who think they are above the law like Mr. Peter Obi are the ones promoting lawlessness in the country. If Mr. Peter Obi—whether hired or not—will always give a balanced account of events in Nigeria to viewers and listeners, there will be less impunity in the country.
Mr. Peter Obi knows very well that the suit number of the suit by which judgment Mrs. Olorunlogbon took possession of the property is boldly written all over it. The person for whom Mr. Peter Obi is working has also joined issues in court over the property. Rather than wait for the court to decide the case, Mr. Peter Obi has gone to town to whip up sentiments to expose the proceedings in court to ridicule. This is undermining the judiciary using undue public opinion and sentiment.
Apart from the judgment, Mrs. Olorunlogbon has Certificates of Occupancy and other relevant Government documents over the property. The property belongs to her and she can use it the way she deems fit until the court rules otherwise.
This disobedience to valid court judgment being exhibited by Mr. Peter Obi in the guise of social media literature has earlier been orchestrated by the servants of Mr. Peter Obi’s principal, and the case was reported at Zone 2 Police HQ Lagos.
Invitation letters were extended to them, confirmed by Mr. Peter Obi himself, but they refused to honour the invitation. Rather, Mr. Peter Obi has now resorted to self-help and extra-judicial machinery in the form of social media which, in a lawful country like Nigeria, is brazen contempt of court.
Let whoever hired Mr. Peter Obi come forward with their documents to match Mrs. Olorunlogbon’s documents over the property and judgment will be given. That settles it all.”
The statement comes in response to widespread public reactions following Obi’s post, where he emotionally described the alleged demolition as an injustice against his brother. Critics have noted inconsistencies in Obi’s description of the ownership, further complicating the narrative. https://www.nigerianeye.com/2025/06/dont-mislead-nigerians-land-owner.html?m=1
A VERY pathetic thing to do by running off to social media WITHOUT getting the legal specifics right and now, it has totally backfired right in his face... Another manifestation of poor judgement. WORSE off is the highly IRRESPONSIBLE posts made online yesterday by a lot of this dude's followers of the same tribe FALSELY accused President 'Bola Tinubu of Nigeria of being behind the demolition. How low can these creeps really get?

Reports from North West Nigeria says Mai Jakka, a feared bandit who turned social media celebrity by flaunting his exploits, has finally met his end.
He was reportedly killed in an operation carried out in Garaji village, located in the Mayanchi axis of Zamfara State.
He wrote, “Reports coming out of Mayanchi axis of Zamfara reports that the security forces have eliminated notorious bandit TikToker Mai Jakka in Garaji village.”
Although details are still emerging, residents of the region are beginning to breathe a little easier.
Mai Jakka wasn’t just any bandit — he became infamous for glamorizing violence on TikTok, turning scenes of destruction into viral content, and mocking the pain of those he dealt with.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but sources suggest the operation was part of a broader crackdown targeting high-profile terrorists in the region.
Brazino: I have a cousin(f) who lives in Delta state and works for a man. I think she works as a housemaid or something, she's my second cousin actually, and we have not seen or talked to each other on the phone for nearly 18yrs now. She's a distant relative.
I was told she stole her Boss' Money and ran from Delta to the village. We are from cross River State. When she returned home, she was everywhere flaunting her possessions and spending with reckless abandon right in the Village. A typical village where there's no light or mobile network.
Her mum was never bothered to ask her daughter how she made such amount of money by just merely working as a house girl. I heard she stole over 2MILLION naira. Her dad is late and she's the favorite child of her mum despite being the overall last child of over ten siblings from three wives.
When she finished squandering the money, she left the village and returned to same Delta State, and in less than a week, she ran into her former employer whose money she had earlier stolen. The man used Jazz to lure her back to the City. He confessed to it. Immediately this cousin of mine was arrested and locked up. When the village uncles were informed about her arrest in Delta state, the mum began to cry and she pleaded with her late husband's kinsmen to rescue her daughter.
Truth is, these villagers have never seen or touched 200k in their entire lives, so it is absolutely impossible for them to raise that money and pay back. They are all peasant farmers living in total poverty.
There's a very strong Deity in my village that is capable of solving almost all issues, especially issues of this kind where someone is in police net or about been sentenced to prison for a crime. This Deity when consulted, has the potency to overrule every judgement, once you get the jazz, travel to where the case is ongoing, go straight to the person in charge of the case and order him/her to release the suspect, the instructions would be obeyed instantly. It hypnotizes.
My uncle and another man want to go and get the jazz so they can travel to Delta State and get my cousin released. She's already been remanded. Now, the downside of this jazz is that after it has finished doing the job you instructed it to do, it will make you forget, like format your brain and make you forget to go back and appreciate it right in the shrine. It only needs a local female fowl. Just that. But after it works, you will completely forget ever using the services of the Deity and when that happens, it takes your own life in place of the fowl. It always needs blood. It gives me jobs as well.
My uncle and another relative are planning on getting this jazz tommorow and I've done everything to discourage him But no way. I've sent others to him to discourage him but no way. I'm not in the village and even reaching them via calls is a big issue cos there's no network there. No mast.
There's almost no way that one of two people going to get that jazz will not die. One of them will definitely kpai as soon as the jazz finish doing its job. And it is the person who stretches his hand to collect the jazz in the shrine that will die. Even the second person will forget to remind the other person to go back and appreciate the Deity.
My own dad is late and this is happening in my maternal village, my mum is unable to stop her brother from embarking on this dangerous adventure.
I find the story right ABOVE to be totally unbelievable. It sounds surreal to me. You want to use "jazz" from a Cross River State deity to strike a former employer from Delta State who earlier used "jazz" to recall to Delta State his former female house keeper who ran off with her male employer's N2 million? That's totally on another level!
Caaz: Yesterday I was craving concoction redoil rice wey go behave like jellof rice due to how the weather was I went to get Meat at the slaughter since its very cheaper than those sold in the market.

I bought these Meat at the rate of 3k.
Those living close by,can get their Meat from them, you can also Call and they'll get your package delivered to you.
Just ask of christain/secretary when you get there.

You folks have to start untangling yourselves from cow meat got from these foreign Fulani herders from Niger Republic, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon, etc, who have contributed to the decades long killings or banditry in Nigeria, and start producing yours on cattle farms in your various states using hybrid species to boost meat and milk production outputs.
TallNigerian: This is a good one honestly. Contrary to the misinformation being peddled around, this tax administration Act will protect the lowest earners, NMSMEs and other vulnerable sectors of the economy. It will also streamline taxation and eliminate multiple taxation.
Then the sweetest part is that all the revenue generating agencies that used to siphon revenues will now face a hard time doing that. NRA will now be solely responsible for all revenue collection in Nigeria.
Here are the key advantages of the recently signed tax reform bills in Nigeria:
Simplified tax administration Creation of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) replaces multiple collection agencies, streamlining tax filing and reducing overlapping levies.
Relief for low‑income earners Personal Income Tax (PAYE) exemption for annual incomes up to ₦1 million (₦83 k/month), while those earning up to ₦1.7 million/month get reduced rates. Essential goods like food, healthcare, education, electricity, and public transport are zero-rated for VAT.
SME and micro‑business incentives Threshold for SME registration raised from ₦25 million to ₦50 million in annual turnover, with full exemption from Company Income Tax (CIT), VAT, and withholding tax—supporting the backbone of the Nigerian economy.
VAT ease & export encouragement Exports of goods, services, and IP are zero-rated for VAT. Input VAT credits on purchases are now clearer—reducing production costs.
Remote work support Nigerians working remotely for foreign employers (outside Nigeria) are exempt from PIT—encouraging participation in the global digital economy.
Benefits for States & Federalism
New VAT-sharing formula VAT distribution now gives Federal Government 10%, States 55%, Local Governments 35%. States under “place of consumption” model will see increased revenue—boosting fiscal autonomy.
State revenue empowerment States gain authority over LLP taxes, lottery/gaming levies, stamp duties, and receive 5% of federal VAT. Bonds issued by states are also tax-exempt—making state finance more independent.
Fiscal coordination via Joint Revenue Board Harmonised tax administration and audit frameworks across federal, state, and local levels—with the establishment of the Joint Revenue Board ensuring stronger intergovernmental collaboration.
Transparency, Dispute Resolution & Tax Fairness
Office of Tax Ombudsman & Appeal Tribunals Provides a streamlined, 14‑day window for resolving taxpayer grievances, reducing enduring disputes and arbitrary assessments.
Nuisance tax repeal & progressive tax structure More than 50 redundant levies eliminated. Tax rates for PIT, VAT, and capital gains restructured progressively—shielding low-income earners.
Increased transparency Establishment of the Tax Ombudsman and harmonised tax laws fosters accountability across MDAs, building trust with taxpayers.
Boost to Revenue & Economic Growth
Wider tax base, higher compliance Digital filing systems and single-windows reduce compliance costs, encourage formalisation and broaden the tax net—currently low at 10.8% of GDP.
Stimulus for investment and job creation Tax credits, CIT reduction from 30% to 25%, exemption for remote service PIT incentives, and export reliefs help boost business, drive employment, and attract capital.
Oil sector stimulus New executive order grants up to 20% tax credits to oil companies that achieve cost-efficiencies—intensifying productivity in a vital revenue stream.
Impressive. I saw this several hours ago on other platforms and it removes a lot of inneficiences in the tax administration system and would take the ease of doing business to another stratospheric level with PAYE relief for a specific salary bracket, and much more.

2tpick: Anybody that decides to engage his brain is tagged an ibo. Why are you guys even associating critical reasoning ability with that tribe? It doesn't take being an ibo man to see BAT for who he really is. Whether schoolmates or class mates, the main issue is whether the Belarusian attended CSU.
Listen... Don't engage in verbal sophistry with me here by deflecting attention from the main issues in that video where President Tinubu CLEARLY stated that he and Alex Zingman were school mates which some mischievous paid trolls right from Page 1 of this NL thread started twisting to course mates. Period!
There are 3 Web links right BELOW from 2 of President 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu's fellow course mates or classmates (Durojaiye Ogunsanya and Olajide Adeniji) "in the same department, class, and college,” who ALL graduated in 1979 from the "Chicago State University" (CSU) in Illinois, USA with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, and management.
Right BELOW are the Web links to the 2003 official document from the then Legal Attache, Michael Bonner of the United States Embassy in Lagos State CLEARING the then Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of ever being arrested or convicted as a criminal or drug baron in the United States. His name wasn't listed as a convicted person in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's FBI National Crime Information Center NCIC database of all convicted criminals in the history of modern United States.
There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING associated with "critical reasoning ability" in the relentless toxic disinformation you all are deliberately spreading and defending here on NL.
I've been a member of NL for 20 years now since 2005. I was very CLEAR in my post about singling out the monikers from Page 1 as Ibos because I know FULL WELL a lot of the NL monikers created and used by many Ibo posters here who relentlessly derail threads while spreading massive disinformation online even after being corrected! They don't even hide their tribal identities. Is that how they want Peter Obi to get votes by engaging in overt tribalism? Now , this is what has led to the folks who are non-Ibos, BUT supporters of the Peter Obi movement [such as Tunde Tollgate (a former staff of an international consulting firm and a wealthy businessmen), and the brilliant U.S.-trained attorney, Ope Banwo] who spent their time and a lot of their financial resources to ensure Peter Obi won in Lagos State by 3,000 votes margin, have recently (as of June 2025) left the so-called political movement due to this kind of tribal toxicity. Their concerns about the toxic disinformation and hate speech by Obi's tribal supporters were were NOT even addressed BUT instead, all they got were brusque dismissals and attacks online with unprintable insults as "saboteurs," "hungry" people and more.
It's important to ALWAYS give constructive criticisms while offering solutions and DESIST from manipulating people's words like these insidious posters are doing herebto defame others. President 'Bola Tinubu NEVER said he and Alex Zingman were "classmates or course mates," he said they were neighbors and "school mates," and I saw a video online just yesterday from "Arise Television" where a lady reporter named Oji too initially made that insidious error of using the word "course mates" and both Reuben Abati and Rufai Oseni instantly corrected her by emphasizing that the Nigerian President 'Bola Tinubu didn't say they were course mates! Rufai Oseni, Reuben Abati, Oji, and Vimbai who appeared in the video discussion ALL gave a lot of fantastic advice on how Alex Zingman can go about doing legitimate international business in Nigeria, and that was a VERY brilliant discussion. Some people go into international trade and are NOT aware of certain business and cultural etiquettes so they get into trouble with tipping people or even giving out money in "brown envelopes" or briefcases which can get you into trouble in many countries. So, Rufai Oseni and Reuben Abati hoped that Alex Zingman would have learned his lessons from the past in DRC and elsewhere whole ensuring that his dealings with Nigeria are transparent. That's HOW to engage in critical thinking and reasoning.
Alex Zingman may have been arrested in DRC but he was released just few months after in that same year and he has been a free man ever since. He's NOT even been declared wanted by the INTERPOL anywhere.
The Fulani political hegemonist, Atiku Abubakar [whose spokesman Paul Ibe wrote on his behalf, condemnations of Tinubu and Alex Zingman] himself was indicted by the United States Congress for being involved in the Halliburton Bribery Scandal in which the United States Congressman William Jefferson was jailed and served his punishment in full for paying bribes to Nigerian officials back in the 2000s. So Atiku Abubakar himself isn't clean yet he and his ilk have the nerve to point accusing fingers through his insidious spokesman. There are several media reports with Web links right BELOW on Atiku Abubakar's involvement in the Halliburton Bribery Scandal and offline, NOT to talk of how he was given a soft landing for his involvement in some corruption cases while in the Nigerian Customs during the military dictatorship years of IBB.
I will end this convo here as I have better things to do with my time. Rufai Oseni and Reuben Abati gave fantastic insights laced with "critical reasoning ability" in their media outlet's video analysis of the Alex Zingman episode which will further assist Government folks over there in Nigeria to screen foreigners who come to engage in international business transactions in Nigeria. Period.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a personal revelation on Monday during the official launch of tractors and agricultural equipment under the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanization Programme, held in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, News360 Nigeria reports.
While addressing guests, the President introduced a long-time acquaintance, Alex, to the audience, saying, “To all of you, Alex was my very good neighbor and went to the same school with me in Chicago. Alex is a successful businessman from Belarus.”
The lighthearted moment drew applause from attendees as President Tinubu emphasized the importance of international business relationships and personal ties in national development.
News360 Nigeria reports that during the build-up to the 2023 presidential elections, questions surrounding Tinubu’s academic history at Chicago State University became a heated topic in Nigeria, with critics and opposition figures frequently demanding proof of his academic records or colleagues.
This appearance by Alex marks the first public instance of a schoolmate from Chicago being introduced by the President, a moment that will likely stir reactions among Nigerians who followed the controversy closely.

ManirBK: Filling stations across the country have adjusted the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol, with a litre sold at almost N1,000 across the country, Daily Trust can report.
This followed the recent increase in the price of crude oil on the global market, triggered by the escalating Israel-Iran hostilities, with marketing advising Nigerians to brace up for further increases unless there is a de-escalation of the current tension.
Daily Trust reports that since the conflict started, there has been severe damage to critical oil infrastructure, triggering a sharp spike in global oil prices.
Spike in crude prices
As soon as the conflict started, Brent crude increased by 11.71% from $66.45 penultimate Monday to $74.23 after hitting an intraday high of $78.50, the highest since January 27.
Also over the penultimate weekend, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude finished at $72.98 a barrel, up $4.94, or 7.62%.
Similarly, WTI jumped over 14% to its highest since January 21 at $77.62. WTI climbed 13% to its level a week ago.
Israel and Iranian hostilities have worsened volatilities in the oil and gas sector as investors are on the edge of price instability amidst fear of escalating Middle East conflict.
As of yesterday (Sunday), crude prices have rallied above $77 per barrel, slipping from $79 over the weekend. There are fears of further increases following US President Donald Trump’s decision to strike three nuclear facilities in Iran, even as Iran has vowed retaliation.
Fear of further spike as Iran vows retaliation
Analysts say retaliation from Iran may increase crude prices further.
As the third-largest oil producer in the world, Iran accounts for over 24 percent of the oil in the Middle East and over 10 percent of the global oil.
In a worst case scenario, JP Morgan said it sees oil averaging $60 in 2026, but flagged $120–$130 per barrel as a potential range in the event of worst-case outcomes—namely, military conflict and a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil flows.
JP Morgan noted that while such escalations could lead to meaningful supply disruption, particularly if Iran’s 2.1 million bpd of exports are cut off, its base case still assumes diplomacy holds.
While increasing prices of crude means more foreign exchange inflows for Nigeria, its flip side is the rise in the price of PMS at the domestic market, with analysts and marketers warning that Nigerians should brace up for more.
Speaking on the rising oil prices, Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE), Dr. Muda Yusuf explained that while the surge in crude oil price would impact on foreign exchange earnings, oil being the biggest forex earner for the country, “Economies around the world [Nigeria inclusive] would witness a surge in the price of petrol, diesel, jet fuel, gas and related products in the near term. This would have far reaching implications for many economies and businesses.”
He said, “This would even be more impactful if output performance improves. Crude oil price has surged to $75 per barrel, which is about 15% higher than before the outbreak of the Israeli–Iran conflict.
“This development would also positively impact the country’s foreign reserves, ensure better forex liquidity and ultimately the stability of the naira exchange rate.”
Dangote adjusts ex-depot price
Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, Nigeria’s foremost petroleum refiner, last week adjusted its gantry price to N880 per litre, representing a N55 increase from the previous rate of N825 per litre.
This has raised fears of a fresh price hike by petroleum marketers who have upwardly adjusted pump prices across the country.
For instance, Dangote-affiliated filling stations in Lagos, like MRS, increased their pump price from N885 to N925. Also, AP filling station sells at N910 per litre.
Other filling stations in the state were still displaying old prices despite the increase in the price of fuel.
Daily Trust findings showed that some of them displayed N870 and N875 but were selling at N910 and N925.
Daily Trust observed that motorists were lured by the low prices displayed on the board, but expressed surprise at the point of sale.
“I thought it was N830 that was why I drove in. I didn’t know it was a different price at the point of sale,” a motorist said.
Also, a commercial driver, Aluko Taiwo expressed displeasure over the unstable price of fuel, saying the fluctuating price of fuel does not guarantee a fixed price for transporters.
Taiwo who plies Ogba to Ojota added that the recent increase in fuel prices had caused an increase of transport fare from N300 to N400, saying it is sparking dissatisfaction from the commuters.
While increasing prices of crude means more foreign exchange inflows for Nigeria, its flip side is the rise in the price of PMS at the domestic market, with analysts and marketers warning that Nigerians should brace up for more.
smokinloud: Firstly, nuke will not help Iran in this war. It'll lead to the quick end of the Islamic regime in Iran. Israel's red devils have been controlling Iran's nuclear project since time immemorial and they'll never let it work. Israel has been controlling Iran's nuclear project in the cyberspace that's why it has never come to fruition. Asides that, the Israel defence system (specifically the David sling, arrow2 and arrow3) has the capability of defending Israel from nuclear weapons. Israel has the capacity of destroying nuclear missiles from 300km away from its territory so it will not affect Israel itself. Lastly, if Iran uses nuke USA will destroy the Ayahtu-allah(Ayatollah) government immediately and install back the original royal King of Iran who ran to USA in the 1979 Islamic invasion of Iran. A nuclear war will spell doom for Iran. The best Iran can do is to continue using proxies to fight Israel. That's why Iran has been silent since.
adebowales: like i personally advise Iran, don’t attack Israel now, focus more on their air defense and also get fighter jets from Russia, build the nuclear weapons, then when they are equipped, attacked Israel totally without being remorseful, destroy all their military installations. Send spy to to gather Intelligence on Israel military site. Blow up the f35, then israel will be on its knees. Are you aware of the bombardment in Naharia today?
Incredible analyses.
Your projections about focusing more on their air defense is unanny tbh.
Botragelad: Israeli forces carried out a special operation in Syria's Hama last week, infiltrating an Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) facility near Masyaf, the Turkey-based opposition Syria TV reported on Thursday, citing exclusive sources.
The operation reportedly involved Israeli aircraft targeting roads leading to the facility, with soldiers descending from helicopters on ropes, according to the report.
There were violent clashes during the operation, in which three Syrians were killed, and two to four Iranians were captured, the report said, without elaborating on what happened to the Iranians.
The report also said that a Russian communications centre was among the sites targeted by the operation.
The Syrian regime has established a high-level commission inquiry into the incident, the report said.
Late on Sunday, Israeli strikes hit military sites in central Syria, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens more.
The report by Syria TV said Syrian security forces had obstructed rescue teams from reaching the targeted area, adding that injured military personnel were transferred to an undisclosed location and their fate remains unknown.
Injured civilians were transferred to Masyaf Hospital.
It said that a camera crew from Syria TV had managed to capture footage of the aftermath of the operation, showing destruction and damage inflicted on the area.
One of the sites on the road between Masyaf and Wadi al-Oyoun was reportedly "completely wiped out" by the attack, with explosions so powerful that roads were blocked for about two hours, forcing Syrian security forces to reach the site on foot.
Syrian media outlets at the time reported that the strike had hit a scientific research centre in Masyaf, which was long associated with the manufacturing of chemical weapons and missiles by the Syrian government and Iranian forces.
However, Syria TV's report was the first to claim that Israeli forces had operated on the ground during the attack on Masyaf, which is located some 200 kilometres (124 miles) north of Israel.
Israeli media on Thursday reported that a special operation was carried out by Israeli forces in Syria last week, during which Israeli commandos raided an IRGC missile facility, and took equipment and documents.
They cited comments by Middle East analyst Eva Koulouriotis, who said on X that security sources had informed her of a special operation carried out by Israeli forces in Syria.
She said Israeli troops entered the compound, removed equipment and documents, and then laid explosives to destroy the facility.
Israel has vowed to stop Iran from establishing a strong military presence in Syria, where thousands of fighters backed by Tehran are stationed. Syria serves as a crucial corridor for Iran to transport weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that since the war in Gaza started in October last year, Israel has carried out 76 airstrikes in different parts of the country.

At least four people were killed in an Iranian missile strike on a residential building in Beer Sheva, Israel, moments before a ceasefire – announced by US President Donald Trump – was due to come into effect.
“There was extensive destruction and damage to residential buildings as a result of a direct and fatal hit,” said Eliya Yitzhak Tobol, head of the Beer Sheva branch of the emergency responder organization, United Hatzalah.

Expecting Nigeria to provide the kind of services Japan provides is just IGNORANT.
Nigeria is a very poor country compared to Japan. We just need to keep diversifying away from oil, because that oil income you think you have is just a pittance.
iwaeda: I saw it, 2027 is already done Atiku is coming, only God can stop him. As for Adamawa governor, let me laugh ahead.
Ogbeni Igbomina, what kind of "disjointed and sarcastic" posts are you ALWAYS making on this discussion forum?... You posted sometime last week inferring that you were already a Uni student during and after the June 12, 1993 election period. Please gather your thoughts together and make more succinct posts that profer solutions like a man who attended Uni back then, (that's if you really did). Period.
Berankis: I never knew even Hausas/Fulanis betray each other. I thought it's just one tribe that I know. Now I think I know better.
The Governor of that state, Umaru Fintiri is a minority from the MARGHI (Margi) ethnic group in Madagali, Gulak LGA, of Adamawa State and NOT a Hausa or a Fulani. He's clearly carrying out the long-awaited internal reforms that I read about since 2022 with the creation of Chiefdoms to ease administration so what imaginary "betrayal" are you and a few other uninformed posters here talking about?
Owaincouncil: Only osun state from the southwest that is not doing anything concerning this. Even the small Ekiti state that was created years after osun is doing well in all areas.
The only thing our governor knows how to do is to be dancing around.
There was a video I watched this morning where he was even dancing to the siren sound (lai se afise)
No significant improvement in the state apart from salary payment. No new company, .... May God just help us.
The last paragraph of your post cracked me up. Governor Jackson was dancing to the sound of a siren? That's on another level.
NO doubt, he was an award-winning dancer during the famous John Player's Disco competition years that we love watching back in the 1980s BUT he has to get serious or be voted out so that he doesn't slow down the DAWN agenda of the SW states.
madridguy: BREAKING: Adamawa Govt Strips Atiku Abubakar Of Waziri Adamawa Title, Others Also Affected.
The Waziri Adamawa is the second highest in authority after the paramount ruler, the Lamido of Adamawa.
In a stunning political and traditional shake-up, the Adamawa State Government has officially stripped Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, of his revered title as Waziri Adamawa, citing non-indigeneship—a move widely seen as a calculated effort to diminish his political influence in his home state.
The Waziri Adamawa is the second highest in authority after the paramount ruler, the Lamido of Adamawa.
The removal, which also affects the Walin Adamawa, was disclosed in a circular dated June 20, 2025, and signed by Mrs. Adama Felicity Mamman, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs under the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The circular stated, “Following the creation of new Chiefdoms in the state by the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, I am directed to inform you that all Kingmakers and Council members in the state must be indigene (sic) of their Chiefdoms.
“E.g, all Kingmakers and Council members from Adamawa Emirate Council must be indigene of Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, Song and Zumo Districts; while those of Mubi Emirate Council, must be indigene of Mubi North, Mubi South vis-à-vis all Emirates/Traditional councils in the state," the circular stated.
This effectively disqualifies Atiku, who hails from Jada Local Government Area under the Ganye Chiefdom, from holding a title within the Adamawa Emirate Council.
The timing and nature of the directive have sparked outrage and speculation, as political watchers interpret it as a deliberate public humiliation of Atiku by Governor Umaru Fintiri—his former political ally during the 2023 general elections.
Both men contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with Atiku running for President and Fintiri for governor.
However, the relationship between the two appears to have deteriorated dramatically, particularly in light of Atiku’s recent involvement in talks with Fintiri's arch-rival, Aishatu Binani, Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to form a new opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu’s APC in the 2027 elections.
Further stirring unease is a controversial executive bill now before the Adamawa State House of Assembly, which seeks to empower the governor to “depose any ailing emir or king” and install a “chosen prince” of his preference.
Critics argue that this would grant the governor sweeping powers over traditional institutions, potentially enabling a broader political purge under the guise of administrative reform.
What?! How is this clean sweep of the traditional titles of the Fulani political hegemonists in Adamawa State possible?
This is a local issue though since I recall reading a few years ago that new Chiefdoms were being planned for Adamawa State so it's highly irresponsible for some uninformed posters here to say that the Nigerian President 'Bola Tinubu is behind this.
So, the man Atiku Abubakar is said in the report NOT to be an indigene of a specific locality in Adamawa State BUT from Jada. On larger scale, it's a known FACT that many of the Fulas in most of the 19 Northern States are NOT indigenous to those places. They just simply migrated with cattle from their original foreign countries as far as Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea Conakry to settle in Nigeria. Usman Dan Fodio himself was born in what is now modern Niger Republic) ONLY to start claiming indigeneship which even the indigenous Hausa of Hausaland in Nigeria who have existed for over 1000 years on their lands are NOT doing by randomly and irresponsibly going about claiming to be indigenes of all the 19 Northern States.
We'll have to FACT-CHECK this and see how this pans out especially as the news source is from Sahara Reporters which has become a source for the dissemination of unverified news and disinformation by Sowore since 2019 or thereabouts.
Reforms are necessary though in several states in especially Northern Nigeria to cut down the negative influences of the minority Fulanis of foreign origin and their political hegemony over indigenous Nigerian ethnic groups which the British Colonialists irresponsibly helped to exacerbate by propping the Fula Amirs up.
