Digestive enzymes breaks down polymeric macromolecules(nucleic acids, proteins, and carbohydrates) into their smaller building blocks, in order to facilitate their absorption by the body.And you know enzymes are biological catalyst that speeds up a reaction. So during eating, assuming you did not obtain proper mastication, your saliva contains the enzyme amylase, also called ptyalin, which is capable of breaking down starch into simpler sugars such as maltose and dextrin that can be further broken down in the small intestine.This means that food may not have to lie for too long in your stomach before/while digestion sets in.

NOTE: If you brush before eating, chances are that you may kill/remove these useful enzymes as they are water soluble.
DISCLAIMER: Don't try this if you are the type that keeps your mouth open while sleeping cos other microorganisms can gain access into your mouth and compromise these enzymes.
