Education / ASUU Strike: FG To Meet Varsity Councils, Vcs. by kudiice(m): 2:32pm On Aug 21, 2013
The Federal Government  will before Sunday meet with  university councils and vice-chancellors   to  update  them on some of the decisions it had reached in its bid to end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The Chairman of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy Assessment Implementation Committee of the universities, Governor Gabriel Suswam, made this known on Tuesday  after President Goodluck Jonathan met behind closed doors  with key officials of his administration  over  the almost two months' old strike.

The officials  included Vice-President Namadi Sambo; the  Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim; the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadome;  the  Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayat Rufa'i; and  the  Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu.

ASUU, however, said shortly after the meeting ended  that the strike  would not be called off because the Federal Government was not sincere in its efforts  to end the dispute.

It was learnt that the Tuesday  meeting afforded the  government officials  taking part in  the negotiations with the striking university teachers the opportunity to brief the President on the latest  development.

Suswam, who is  also the governor of Benue State,  told State House correspondents after  the meeting that substantial progress had been made in the negotiations.

He  expressed the hope that the strike would be called off  soon based on some of the mechanisms that had  been put in place to move university   education    forward.

The governor said while the issues surrounding the NEEDS assessment had been concluded to some extent, those bordering on the earned allowance component being handled by the SGF were pending.

Suswam  said, "As you must have heard, the Federal Government  made an offer of N30bn to assist the various councils of our universities to be able to pay the earned allowances.

"There is also N100bn and that is why  the Minister of Finance, the SGF, the   ministers of education and  labour as well as the Chief of Staff, the VP and myself  have just risen from a meeting to take some decisions that would end the strike  soon. The President has instructed us on    what to do and he has shown a lot of commitments  by starting  a project worth about N100bn  in all the universities in about 61 universities in  the country.

"So we are hoping that we will be able to see the end of the strike very soon if at the end of the day,  ASUU  is satisfied with the measures that  we have so far  taken .

"The Federal Government will also be meeting with the university councils and vice-chancellors of our universities within the week towards updating them on some of the decisions taken."

The governor added that    the meeting with the varsity councils was necessary  because earned allowances had  to be certified by the management and councils of the universities.

He said since the Federal Government had offered to assist the councils with N30bn, it was important for them to go and verify  and pay the people who are  actually  entitled to the allowances.

"I think that the government had demonstrated some substantial faith . Yes, if ASUU said that this is the amount of money that the Federal Government  is owing them and the  government  has shifted ground from its initial posture, it means we are moving forward. With a N100bn available now for addressing the physical infrastructure deficit in our universities, I think the Federal Government has done quite well to have moved to where we are today," he  added.

But ASUU has said  after the meeting which held in Jonathan's office in the Presidential Villa, that the  Federal Government  was only using propaganda to curry public support rather than facing the issues raised by it.

A member of the National Executive Council of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Adesola, told one of our correspondents on the telephone  that theN30bn offered  to the striking lecturers  as earned allowances   was even worse than "where we were before the deadlocked  meeting  on Monday."

The government, he said, had not shown enough commitment towards the settlement of the conflict.

According to him, the government only offered N30bn without saying anything on when the balance of the earned allowances would be paid.

He  also said that the declaration  by the government that it had  approved   N100bn  for  the development of infrastructure in the universities was  a mere propaganda.

Meanwhile, the  All Progressives Congress  has  asked the government to honour its agreement with  ASUU in order  to end the  strike which began on July 1.

The APC,  in   a statement on Tuesday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said ASUU's demand for N87bn was not open to government's negotiation.

The statement reads, ''The N87bn that ASUU is demanding represents earned allowances hence cannot be renegotiated.

"In any  case, this amount pales into insignificance when placed side by side  the N1tr  that has been spent on federal legislators in the past eight years; or the frivolity involved in a government minister travelling to China to negotiate  a $1bn loan in a chartered jet (with its attendant costs) and with a retinue of officials  who earned generous estacode in hard currency."

It said ASUU was not making any fresh demand beyond the agreement it reached with the government in 2009.

"Agreements are meant to be honoured, and breaching them comes with some consequences," the statement added.

The  party said while the Federal Government refused to honour its own side of the agreement with ASUU since 2009, "it could pay out N3tn  in non-existent fuel subsidies to fat cats".

It added that in place of ASUU strike, the Federal Government preferred to spend N1tn annually "to maintain the jets in the Presidential fleet and do little or nothing to prevent the  stealing of 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day."

It condemned the  "non-chalance" of those who should be working round the clock to resolve the crisis, especially the Minister of State for Education, Nyeson Wike.

The APC claimed that instead of focusing on the problem, Wike "was launching vigilance groups and dancing 'palongo' around town when the nation's public universities are shut and students are languishing."

Reacting, Wike's Special Assistant on Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, said "no administration has impacted on education like the Jonathan administration."

He said Wike had actively participated in the process of resolving the ASUU crisis, with the Federal Government team led by the SGF.

“With a deep sense of loss, we announce the shocking death of our darling music star, Goldie Harvey. Goldie, 31, died on Thursday after she complained of a severe headache shortly after her arrival from the United States where she went to witness the Grammy Award.

*Goldie in tears at the eviction show at the Big Brother Africa
She was rushed from her Park View, Ikoyi, Lagos residence to her official hospital, Reddington, Victoria Island, Lagos, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival at exactly 7:30pm in the evening. We consider this period a gloomy moment for us and the entire Nigerian music industry in view of the circumstance in which she passed away; the abundance of talent she exhibited in her short but eventful music career and the various opportunities her trip to the United States of America would have availed her.

She is survived by her father, step- mother, brothers and sisters. We deeply sympathise with her family and fans all over the world and very grateful to all and sundry, especially, the vibrant Nigerian media for their concern and prompt reportage. We shall keep everybody informed as events unfold as we are devastated by the sudden loss.”

Goldie’s remains have been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH mortuary.

Health / Teenage Girls Are Now Inserting Tampons Soaked With Vodka Into Themselves, To Ge by kudiice(m): 12:01am On Feb 07, 2013
It's no secret teenagers sometimes experiment with alcohol, even drugs, but new ways they're finding to get drunk had jaws dropping in our newsroom.
"Quicker high, they think it's going to last longer, it's more intense," said Dr. Dan Quan from Maricopa Medical Center. "This is not isolated to any school, any city, any financial area," Officer Chris Thomas, a school resource officer, said. "This is everywhere."
When we heard how kids are getting drunk these days, we thought no way. So we hit up the experts to find out if it's an urban legend or if it's legit.
"There's been documented cases of people going to the hospital with alcohol poisoning just from utilizing it that way," Thomas said. Thomas spends his days patrolling the halls of a Valley high school. He's heard first hand how kids are getting tipsy.
"What we're hearing about is teenagers utilizing tampons, soak them in vodka first before using them," Thomas said. "It gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream. There's no barrier, there's no stomach acid to prevent it," Thomas said. "I would expect it to absorb pretty quickly as well, because it's a very vascular structure," Quan told the newspaper. "This is definitely not just girls," Thomas said. "Guys will also use it."
But take it from this cop, it won't work. It's not just jail time that might be a problem, these new tricks are really risky and could cause some serious problems. "It can cause mucosal irritation," Quan said. Plus, what if you over do it? Irritation could be the least of your problems. "Some of the dangers associated with this is there's no barrier," Thomas said.
There's also no gag reflex, and if it isn't going down the hatch you won't have that tell tale sign you've had too much to drink, which means you won't throw up if you've got alcohol poisoning, and you'll pass out before you know there's a problem. "It's problematic because you don't really know how much you're going to absorb," Quan said. It turns out that a super tampon can hold about a shot of vodka, which is pretty potent when it's going straight into your system.
"If the person does pass out or lose consciousness, health care professionals won't necessarily know that they have to look in those areas and that may delay treatment," Quan said.
Another myth is that kids apparently think getting drunk that way means they would pass a breathalyzer test because they didn't drink the booze, but that's not true. The test checks out what's in your blood stream, not what's on your breath.
Sports / Man Stopped From Slapping Keshi For Substituting Moses For Yobo by kudiice(m): 10:16am On Feb 05, 2013
What could have been an ugly scenario was averted by security men attached to the Media Centre at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, on Sunday evening when a middle aged Nigerian soccer fan, who attempted to attack the Super Eagles Head Coach Stephen Keshi, moment after the Eagles quarter-final match against Cote d’Ivoire, was arrested.
The man, who was wearing a Super Eagles shirt and brown trousers, was stopped at the entrance into the Media Centre, as journalists were moving into the hall for the day’s post match briefing with the coaches and captains of the two national teams.
Information Nigeria gathered that the man said his sole aim at the Media Centre was to slap the Nigerian coach for substituting Victor Moses and bringing in Joseph Yobo at the tail end of the match.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / ‘yes, Always You’ Milan Tell Balotelli. by kudiice(m): 1:10pm On Jan 31, 2013
MILAN (AFP) – AC Milan have welcomed Mario Balotelli to the club following his arrival from Manchester City with a cheeky reference to the ‘Why Always Me?’ T-shirt the striker famously exposed in a 2011 derby against United.

‘Yes, always you’, was the headline on the Milan webpage officially welcoming Balotelli to the Rossoneri, a club he openly supported while playing for Milan rivals Inter.

Balotelli exposed the ‘Why Always Me?’ message after scoring two goals in an October 2011 derby against Manchester United.

The message was generally believed to target the many media reports of the many stunts and incidents that made Balotelli a household name during his time in the Premier League.

Two days prior to the derby in question, for example, Balotelli set his house on fire after throwing fireworks out of the bathroom window.

Balotelli arrived in Milan on Wednesday and said he hoped he could revive his career after a roller-coaster spell with the English champions.

“I didn’t start the season very well with City so I am coming to Milan to revive myself and to do well,” said Balotelli as he prepared to return to Serie A in a deal said to be worth around $30 million (22 million euros).

“I have wanted to play for Milan for a long time, but I was with other teams. When this chance came along I grabbed it. I hope Milan can become a big club again.”

Balotelli, who will wear the number 45 shirt, was set to complete a medical on Thursday and be unveiled to the press on Friday evening.

Milan, who have climbed to fifth place at 12 points behind leaders Juventus following a disastrous start to the season, host Udinese on Sunday.

Education / 3 Men molest And Inpregnate 13 Year Old Girl In Lagos. by kudiice(m): 1:02pm On Jan 31, 2013
LAGOS — Policemen at Makinde Division in Lagos, have arrested three men who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl, last  August in Mafoluku area of Oshodi.

The victim, a Junior Secondary School student (names withheld), was reportedly invited into one of the suspects apartment at 19, Majaro Street, Mafoluku.

Report said when she got inside, the owner of the apartment Emenuwa Achonam, a married man with five children, whose family was away, had carnal knowledge of her, alongside his two friends, Godwin Udoh, 22, and Emenike Orji, 20,

She was, thereafter, instructed not to tell anyone and also  threatened to kill her if she did.

But the bubble burst after the teenager  fell ill and was taken to the hospital only to be confirmed that she was pregnant, a development that reportedly threw her parents off balance.

The teenager, who was apparently oblivious of her present state, told policemen that “brother Achonam called me to buy drinks for his visitors. But when I got inside to collect the money, he asked me to  pull my clothes and they  started dipping their hands inside my womanhood before they had carnal knowledge of me. At the end they said they would kill me if I tell my parents or anyone about it.

The prime suspect, Achonam, admitted to having  committed the crime, blaming it on the handiwork of the devil. He  disclosed that his wife travelled to the village to nurse their fifth child. On the part of his alleged partners in crime, they claimed they acted on Achonam’s instruction.

The  case, was charged to Oshodi Magistrate court, from where it was transferred to the Ikeja family court.
