[quote author=paddy_lo link=topic=366272.msg5128751#msg5128751 date=1261001298]i just read what the ladejs dude posted. . .and it makes no sense whatsoever. .lol

he makes random statements with nothing to back it up. . .

again u leave this discussion at a dead end if u are unable to provide a concrete example of what u mean. . .

so i can rebut it line by line . . .
[/quote]rather than engage in posting competition i will explain why my 'random statements do make sense. hope this helps,

Economic Growth is a narrower concept than economic development. It is an increase in a country's real level of national output which can be caused by an increase in the quality of resources (by education, health etc.), increase in the quantity of resources & improvements in technology or in another way an increase in the value of goods and services produced by every sector of the economy.Economic Growth can be measured by an increase in a country's GDP, while,

Economic development is a normative concept i.e. it applies in the context of people's sense of morality (right and wrong, good and bad). The definition of economic development given by Michael Todaro is an increase in living standards, improvement in self-esteem needs and freedom from oppression as well as a greater choice. The most accurate method of measuring development is the[b] Human Development Index [/b]which takes into account the literacy rates & life expectancy which affect productivity and could lead to Economic Growth. It also leads to the creation of more opportunities in the sectors of education, healthcare, employment and the conservation of the environment. It implies an increase in the per capita income of every citizen.

to buttress my point,

Development alleviates people from low standards of living into proper employment with suitable shelter.

Economic Growth does not take into account the depletion of natural resources which might lead to pollution, congestion & disease.[gas flaring in niger delta for example and total degradation of its environs]

Development however is concerned with sustainability which means meeting the needs of the present without compromising future needs.

one last one,

development- Brings both qualitative and quantitative changes in the economy [aged population ,low infant mortality rate]
growth- Brings quantitative changes in the economy[i.e. huge foreign reserves of 30 billion dollars but still widespread suffering]

i do hope this brought more clarity to the subject matter.

FInd the post here https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-366272.96.html

Please read as I believe it is straight forward, just as my most recent post was.
mr kobojunkie how far my broda, till a lot of the contributors to this forum get the difference between growth and development, im afraid you're barking on the wrong trees grin. first they need to understand that a difference exists between growth and development, just like a difference exists between wealth and riches. though babangida may be stinkingly rich and has riches, that doesnt make him wealthy, because wealth is a system of EMPOWERMENT while any fortunate baggar can be rich. contributors abeg align this analogy to the topic and understand we are indeed growing not developing. also even though there is credit crunch that doesnt mean british gas or [insert any other westernised power authority] will take light. grin

That's been the problem in Africa for decades. As I mentioned earlier, Nigeria has so much more Entrepreneurs (including small business owners, investors, etc) all put together than I can say countries like England can boast of, YET, we do not have near the level of development the same country had over 50 years ago. Even with increased size of investment from foreign companies and nation, Africa has yet to actually produce even two remotely serious developed countries. Nigeria, in the last decades has experienced tremendous growth in investment but in the same amount of time, it has recorded increased poverty, inflation rates and cost of living. We sure say na by textbox the real world dey function so? grin
you are quite right

Just to add to this. development is certainly different from growth

To grow is to increase in size or number. To develop is to increase one’s ability and desire to satisfy one’s own needs and legitimate desires and those of others. A legitimate desire is one that, when satisfied, does not impede the development of anyone else.

Development of individuals and corporations is more a matter of learning than earning. It has less to do with how much one has than how much one can do with whatever one has.

Development is better reflected in quality of life than in standard of living. Therefore, the level of development of a corporation is better reflected in the quality of work life it provides its employees than in its profit-and-loss statement.

If an undeveloped country or corporation was flooded with money it would be richer but no more developed[naija]. On the other hand, if a well developed country or corporation was suddenly deprived of wealth, it would not be less developed[the UK].

A well-developed country or corporation can do more with its resources than one that is less developed. This is not to say that the amount of resources available is irrelevant. Resources can be used to accelerate development and improve quality of life, but they can best be used for these purposes by those who are developed.

Growth and development do not have to conflict; they can reinforce each other. The best evidence that this is happening is a simultaneous increase in standard of living and quality of life. However, there is currently a widespread belief that quality of life is being sacrificed to increase standard of living. This belief is accompanied by a willingness to sacrifice standard of living to improve quality of life, a willingness that is reflected in the environmentalist movement.

A lack of resources can limit growth but not development. The more developed individuals, organisations, or societies become the less they depend on resources and the more they can do with whatever resources they have. They also have the ability and the desire to create or acquire the resources they need.

An individual can grow too much. Some people and many societies believe that a corporation can too. But would anyone argue that individuals, corporations, or countries can develop too much?

and piracy is also another reason why nollywood hasnt reached to the level it should be at by now.
but they can AT LEAST come up with better storylines, and make the covers to their movies more appealing.
well they can post the people in the movies on the cover.
the last 3 movie covers i posted showed the people in them just fine.

OvieE:
I do not care whether Nigeria prepare or not, history has reveal itself again but I believe they will prepare. Argentina must be worrying now because for the previous world cup US94 and Japan/South Korea, Argentina has never advance to round 16. Argentina only went to round 16 in US 49 for best third place. So they have something to worry about. I am sure Nigeria will be a different team when to get to SA. I believe Nigeria will help either Greece or Korea to next round.
you should CARE. preparation is everything. we can never compare ourselves to argentina till we do something great in the tournament. we NEED to prepare and adopt a preparation culture.

Wtf? I've been thinking along same lines.
Not only Kanu. Okocha, Yobo, Yakubu. . . Haba grin
thats why we are not moving forward as a nation. america has more dialects in english than we have major languages. each state has an accent, there's the boston drawl, NY twang, chigaco holla, california speak. from the durtty south to the hamptons in NY. it really doesnt matter. not one bit. donald trump will still hob nob with snoop dogg regardless of his accent. we really need to move forward.

seriously now, I saw the other advert he shot for NOBLE rugs and I felt those guys werent being too fair to him, too many lines for him to blurt out shocked

The biggest footie stars the world over know how to communicate in generally accepted lingua cool

Kanu isnt the only one, JJ's is equally piss poor in communicating, Rashidi Yekini et al . . .who cares about the money they have ? Its not always about the money, THE REASON WHY AMOKACHI, OLISEH, SIASIA, OKENLA, ETIM ESIN and other guys like that are always visible is BECAUSE THEY CAN EXPRESS THEMSELVES WELL !!!

did I hear anyone criticise Mikel there ? undecided
its the achievements that got them where they are not the money. if u won the lottery today u would just be Dr Kitaun with money, not with achievements. lets celebrate the few bright lights in our country instead of nit picking on irrelevances. if nike et al are not concerned and continue to pay him, which one YOUR OWN BEhuhhuh??
