Look at what we celebrate everyday, you will understand why we lack moral capacity to change.

Zulu king had Virgins too until we found out she was a regular supplier to one of the minister.

Ned, how are you sure the Arab children beggars from Niger and North Africa you found on the streets of Aba are virgins after motor pack guys had their turns.

One of them will soon accuse you of sexual abuse.

Let us celebrate children's day not sweet sixteen that made this man famous.

Actually, there is a federal law named the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act enacted in 1986 that applies to all states and all hospitals that accept Medicare, which is practically almost all. Hospitals are required to treat and stabilize anyone who walks into an ER regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. I know for a fact that it happens in the southern states. I know of specific examples in Mississippi and Alabama where the ER's were overwhelmed with non insured patients. This predates Obamacare and is still in effect.
Why do you guys get distracted by law that can never be enforced? No be US? Who told you the budget for MEDICAID and MEDICARE can be bursted?

Unfortunately, that is the argument used to kill Obamacare slowly, even in the Supreme Court! Have you ever asked why Americans even in the most progressive states are going without medical treatment and the reason for Obamacare in the first place?

My dear a word of caution. Most people go to US to better themselves, not to become destitute. If you get a good job or buy a house, and they can trace all aliases used to you, MEDICAID will garnish your salary and put a lien on your house. Free eh?

Yes, parents are taken to Emergency for all types of illnesses but they are couched to give false name and addresses while their children stay out of sight in the hospital. Well, you cannot trace them because they go back home in a few months.

As for destitute, who pay for their medication when they leave Emergency? Pray you do not have an illness that need medical management for a few weeks. You die like a dog in the richest country in the world where people die homeless on the streets everyday.

BTW, any foreigner used to visit London and get complete health care until Edward Heath and Margaret Thacher spoiled better thing. How is it now?

You know in United States, there is a law against any form of discrimination? It could not be the place where the poor, black and brown die everyday in front of cell phone camera, is it!
TravelRe: Immigration Stops 58 Doctors From Travelling To The UK by laiperi: 2:50am On Jul 12, 2020
Mancala,

You know I heard that anyone can walk into Emergency Room and get treated many times. True but in which states?

If you are talking about New England, true. In Washington and California, true. If you tried that in the Southern states before Obamacare, you are dead!

But then, there are a few counties with religious or non-profit organizations that may accept you. Even then, they will not let you burst their budget. There are certain amount of allocations from Federal or State budgets.

Another way to understand it is to look at states that accept Obamacare and those that did not. Simply put, most Northern states did and most Southern states did not. It is also important that nothing, absolutely free for a few years to the states, yet they refused Obamacare that cost them nada!

Mancala:
.
At least, in the U.S., you can walk into a hospital emregency room and get treatment, no questions asked. Not ideal, but people do not die like flies. They would treat and stabilize you before talking money. This pre-exists Obamacare.
As for the freedom to live where ever is convenient for each individual, fine. But do not live where you are a parasite, looter, money and talents launders. Go out and struggle like everyone else in your country of choice.

I do not want to go deeper. Suffice to say while some people are working and going to school full time, then sending money home to Nigeria, others are laundering more abroad for taxes on humongous houses, exotic cars, their children and girlfriends while the owner of the money and resources laundered, suffer and wallow in poverty in Nigeria.

It is not fair and that is not freedom to live where you want.
TravelRe: Immigration Stops 58 Doctors From Travelling To The UK by laiperi:
Mancala,

You are quite right and on point. But remember that as young doctors cry, poorer Nigerians bleed. Africa is a harder place than ever. We will not solve the problem by running away.

I would like to know how you feel about those who left big money, position and comfort to head home. Money is not everything.

I mentioned in one of my posts how the small towns and villagers shower doctors with kindness to get them to stay after NYSC. Some did, some left.

Then our endurance has a limit. No one should go into medicine without. Actually, that was the reason they used to make young doctors work those crazy hours. It is slave labor and many countries have reduced it.

So I totally agree with you on the arduous tasks of doctors. But paying out of pocket, choice of medicine or none and who gets treated is not limited to Nigeria. Without good insurance, it is the norm in rural areas in the US until OBACARE. Many people saw doctors for the first time or after losing their job until Obamacare.

Mancala:
Relatively speaking, the practice of medicine in the U.S. is still "luxurious" in the worst of times compared to Nigeria. American docs were overwhelmed at the start of the covid crisis due to situations like insufficient PPE and hospital beds in isolation/negative pressure wards as well as insufficient ventilators, all temporary in nature. These are everyday permanent occurrences in a place like Nigeria. A patient has to provide pretty much everything for themselves. I recall a case where a baby was born prematurely and needed to be in an incubator. The parents had to pay to repair the only available incubator then bring a generator from home to keep it going. A collection was taken everyday to buy gasoline to run it.
"Even Gowon once boasted that money is not the problem but how to spend it" Theirein lies one singular problem of the average Nigerian in power. A lack of foresight and imagination!
TravelRe: Immigration Stops 58 Doctors From Travelling To The UK by laiperi: 10:25pm On Jul 11, 2020
I think Nigerians must realize that the grass is greener on the other side is in the eyes of the beholder. American doctors cannot believe what they are going through right now. Most of the doctors that die from covid19 in UK are foreigners.

For those of you that were around in the 80s, while some of us were crying that Nigeria was going down, foreigners from all over the world made Nigeria their home. Even Gowon once boasted that money was not the problem but how to spend it. So money is relative. Canadian doctors found that out the hard way in the States. Nigeria got richer and the people got poorer.

Until the children of the privileged join this fight against their parents that are in charge, it will be difficult to make headway.

Those children of the rich can afford to live anywhere. Even in Nigeria, they live in a different world.

The serious but funny part is their children will not come back and live in Nigeria. When their parents die, those children will come for a few days for burial and go back. Their line of the families will disappear forever.

Mancala,

Believe this or not. You could be talking about Canadian doctors too. Many of those that moved to United States relocated back to Canada after a few years. Why?

There are no basic facilities, supplies or equipment. Often times, the physician has to pay for or stand as a guarantor for essential supplies like oxygen, medications etc that are needed for a vastly impoverished patient population. Imagine having to make a decision as to who's medications or services you will pay for out of your own pocket, knowing fully well that those that do not get the essential care will die if you don't step up.
It is even worse right now in the Southern States in the face of covid19. US Doctors come crying on TV.

They should be loyal to their country. Doctors are well paid even in Nigeria and there is job security for them.
You know what, we all should be loyal to this country, not doctors alone. We need some incentives or deterrent to enforce this. Look at the children of the privileged. They send their children to the best schools at home and abroad. So you should not be surprised that they are the first to complain about Nigeria because they feel entitled than other professionals or the poor and will disown their loyalty or the country like the poor that have nothing.

One of my beef with them is that in the countries they run to, the privileged champion the cause of the poor, the rich bequest their wealth to good causes. And for the first time, children of the privileged whites came out, outnumbering blacks in the demonstrations.

As I stated before those Indians that make up the majority of foreign doctors in UK fight for their Civil Rights, discrimination, exploitation of Rural and Remote areas doctors. One of my brothers here feign ignorance of Rural or Remote areas in Europe or America, Western world for short.

So educate me how we can have loyalty to Nigeria when selfishness and greed override everything.

TravelRe: Immigration Stops 58 Doctors From Travelling To The UK by laiperi: 1:32pm On Jul 11, 2020
My main beef here is about poaching of African doctors but looking at stats, Nigerian and Egyptian doctors may be more coming from Africa, Indian doctors make up most of the foreign doctors in UK.

So they put up Civil Rights defence against Rural and Remote areas slave labor, discrimination in major cities and ensure that the 2 to 3 years restraining of Indian doctors reduce blatant failure of immigrant doctors.

For African doctors, those are medicine after death. How do we correct social greed perpetrated by the parents of the privilege brats that come here crying like the poor?

If this trip fails, there are more coming. We must change the training of our doctors for the outside world. As someone suggested above, include more traditional training as poison pill for outside recruiters poaching our children.

This thread is good but we must act and turn off the gas instead of fighting the flame.

Just imagine the question below. Simple information he could get where he is.

justwise:
Can you give an example of such situation in the UK or any other western countries? As far as i know there is no understandable area in the UK that a Dr will be dumped and treated badly
TravelRe: Immigration Stops 58 Doctors From Travelling To The UK by laiperi: 11:37am On Jul 11, 2020
This thread is a typical example of individual contribution to corruption while blaming the other guy.

Most of those that get into professional schools in Nigeria are the children of the rich and well connected. I hasten to say it is also true in Western countries. But the children of the poor that get in Nigeria are not as committed to Justice for the deprived areas as they are in the States.

Moreover, it is the parents of these well connected children that mess up the country in the first place. Now their children are blaming the rest of us for not providing them enough money to live the looted life their parents provided them.

It gets worse because the children of the poor that are brilliant and could not be refused entry into professional schools join the spoiled brats club.

So in pursuit of money, any Agent that understands the greed mentality of our youth can charter a plane and dump them into slave labor market. The Agent does not even have to be as smart as them but streetwise.

Some of you know how these young doctors are treated in the villages to encourage them to stay. The love, respect and kindness showered on them compared to the underserved areas they are recruited to in Western countries. They drive down wages of Western doctors because they are not regarded as real doctors, they are abused and used in any role.

But eh, they make more money than in Nigeria! This disturb those that left the same Western countries and come home to serve.

Some of them have reasons to complain especially those that voluntarily accept posting to rural areas. Others will refuse to accept posting and before you know it their patrons would override you.

But guess what? When they move overseas they are posted to the same remote areas they refused in Nigeria.

Distribution of doctors is our problem. We do not have enough doctors. There used to be a time when doctors were posted to other Africa countries. In those days we had more doctors than them.

But now, rich countries are poaching our doctors, give them temporary license to work in Indian Reservation for a year and send them back home. Nigerians don't leave, they hide and do any odd jobs preparing for exam or another temporary license.

Thanks for your concern but word from the grapevine is that the issue has been settled and they will still leave over the weekend.

Nigerian government can stop this braindrain by making our medical degree unattractive to the west. They can incorporate some aspect of traditional medicine into our medical school curriculum, that way the west won't value it.
Look in Nigeria, we move forward and backwards depending on who is in charge. We started it with Prof. Lambo and Prof. Laoye Kuti. But as soon as they leave, we have to start all over.

I am not sure if you know about Community Health Officers trained in the School of Health Technology. When Nigeria was 19 States, we had them all over. I do not know about now.

But with these brats, we will be forced to get there. Imagine people who qualified abroad dropped everything including good income and comfortable houses to come home and teach these brats.

I can see that you are not well trained at home and in school.

What you are reaping is what those that trained you created. They think they were spiteful, especially to the poor and those that are unconnected to get their children into medical schools.

You spend all your time blaming politicians, this is another money and talent laundering. Nigeria should open the Treasury so that you can help yourselves because you got free medical education.

Imagine if Britain and America got a plane to export their medical workers to Siberia and China for starving wages.

Nigeria must stop training these ingrates and replace all of them with community health officers that cannot be exported.

Money money money. Is that what made Russia, China and Scandinavian countries. After covid19, they will be sent back to their villages. Without papers, they will be hiding, doing odd jobs and sending pictures home that they have made it.

The next thing you hear, they have been deported or shot on sight by police.

(CNN)International students who are pursuing degrees in the United States will have to leave the country or risk deportation if their universities switch to online-only courses, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Monday.

The move may affect thousands of foreign students who come to the United States to attend universities or participate in training programs, as well as non-academic or vocational studies.

Universities nationwide are beginning to make the decision to transition to online courses as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. At Harvard, for example, all course instruction will be delivered online, including for students living on campus. For international students, that opens the door to them having to leave the US.

"There's so much uncertainty. It's very frustrating," said Valeria Mendiola, 26, a graduate student at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. "If I have to go back to Mexico, I am able to go back, but many international students just can't."

In a news release Monday, ICE said that students who fall under certain visas "may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States," adding, "The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States."

The agency suggested that students currently enrolled in the US consider other measures, like transferring to schools with in-person instruction. There's an exception for universities using a hybrid model, such as a mix of online and in-person classes.

Brad Farnsworth, vice president of the American Council on Education, said the announcement caught him and many others by surprise.

"We think this is going to create more confusion and more uncertainty," said Farnsworth, whose organization represents about 1,800 colleges and universities. "What we were hoping to see was more appreciation for all the different possible nuances that campuses will be exploring."

One concern with the new guidance, Farnsworth said, is what would happen if the public health situation deteriorates in the fall and universities that had been offering in-person classes feel they have to shift all courses online to stay safe.

Visa requirements for students have always been strict and coming to the US to take online-only courses has been prohibited.

"These are not some fly-by-night universities, these aren't scams, these are legit universities who would normally have in-person curricula but for coronavirus," said Theresa Cardinal Brown, director of immigration and cross-border policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

"The bigger issue is some of these countries have travel restrictions on and they can't go home, so what do they do then?" she added. "It's a conundrum for a lot of students."

Harvard University President Larry Bacow said in a statement Monday evening that "we are deeply concerned that the guidance issued today by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement imposes a blunt, one-size-fits-all approach to a complex problem giving international students, particularly those in online programs, few options beyond leaving the country or transferring schools."

The guidance, Bacow continued, "undermines the thoughtful approach taken on behalf of students by so many institutions, including Harvard, to plan for continuing academic programs while balancing the health and safety challenges of the global pandemic."

"We will work closely with other colleges and universities around the country to chart a path forward," he said.

The Trump administration has made a litany of changes to the US immigration system, citing the coronavirus pandemic, that have resulted in barring swaths of immigrants from coming to the country.

Last month, the White House issued an immigration proclamation dramatically curtailing legal immigration to the US sending hundreds of people and businesses into a scramble to understand whether their future plans are derailed.

In the proclamation, the administration argued that the "extraordinary circumstances" posed by coronavirus called for the suspension of employment-based visas. But immigrant advocates, industries and experts say the administration is taking advantage of the pandemic to make sweeping immigration changes and advance its agenda to slash legal immigration.

Monday's announcement, like the changes that preceded it, could similarly result in many foreign students who often pay high tuition to have to return to their home country.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, a think tank based in Washington, DC, about 1.2 million students who fall under the affected visas were enrolled and registered at more than 8,700 schools nationwide as of March 2018.

Farnsworth said he sees the announcement as part of a larger pattern of moves by the administration that "have not set the right tone."

"This is going to create I think more anxiety on the part of international students, and for those who are still thinking about where they're going to go in the fall, I think this may push them in the direction of attending a university in another country," he said.

While students might have the option to transfer to a college or university offering in-person courses, it might be difficult to come by amid continued concerns over coronavirus. Some schools have announced plans to bring students back but shorten semesters, as well as cancel nearly all in-person classes through the semester.
