Tithing in the Bible - Is Tithing for the New Testament Believer?

Tithing is a Matter of the Heart
First, let's look at the definition and purpose of tithe. The main principle behind tithing and giving is the fact that what we do with our money shows where our heart is. Matthew 6:21 says "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." When we are able to give 10% or more of our income instead of keeping that money for ourselves, it shows that our heart isn't tied to our money and that we love God more than our money.

The Bible mentions money over 800 times and of all of Jesus' parables, more than half of them talked about money. Why? Because that is where so many people get tripped up! When we are able to release at least 10% of our income back to God, our money doesn't have as tight of a hold on us because we realize that God is in control of our finances. We remember that everything we have has been given to us by Him. Even though most of us probably work for the money we make each month, even God has his hand there - He has given us the ability to do our jobs. Many who grasp what God has truly given them seem to agree that 10% doesn't even feel like enough!

Is Tithing Mandatory?
Many people today takes the idea of tithing being "mandatory" or "required" - as if it is something that keeps believers in bondage. But do God's standards really keep us in bondage? Just like God tells us to keep sex within marriage, to love one another and to seek first His kingdom, tithing is a blessing to our lives and something that will help better our lives (as well as help the lives of others). We are not saved by works, thus failing to tithe will not necessarily send you to hell, but doing so will help improve your life and strengthen your relationship with God. I personally don't believe that God will curse us if we don't tithe, but I do believe He will help us escape the curse that is already in the world if we do. I also understand that there may be some church leaders who try to guilt and coerce people into giving, but studies show there are plenty of church leaders honoring God in this area -- the majority of them want to share God's best with the people they love and have been tasked to lead.

Old Testament vs. New Testament Tithing Practices
Whether the tithe is only for Old Testament or if it is also included in the New Testament is probably the most debated issue. The scripture most frequently referenced regarding the tithe is indeed in the Old Testament (Malachi 3:10-12), but the tithe is also referenced in the New Testament. In Matthew 23:23, Jesus talks to the Pharisees, condemning them for tithing to the penny but neglecting the more important issues of justice, mercy and faith. He then goes on to tell them that they should in fact tithe, but that they shouldn't neglect the more important things. Jesus recognized the importance of keeping the tithe and we should, too.

There are many practices in the Old Testament that don't make sense to us today, yet many of these ancient ways carry over to the New Testament law of grace as part of Christ's promise to not abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). For instance we no longer sacrifice animals but as believers we are called to offer ourselves up as a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1). Men no longer are required to be circumcised, but we all have a circumcision of the heart through the Holy Spirit (Rom 2:29). Most of us don't have grain and produce to bring to the storehouse, but we do have incomes that we can bring the first tenth of into the church. In other words, just because something is written in the Old Testament doesn't mean it lacks application to us today in some way or another.

While it is true that we are no longer under the old law, that we are under grace, we must not forget the purpose of grace: to help us live for God and do the things He wants us to do. Romans 8:4 tells us that Jesus came that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, not so that we could altogether dismiss it. And Romans 3:21-31 talks about how we have righteousness through faith and not through following the law, but verse 31 adds "Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law." God's grace gives us the power and ability to tithe!

Tithe and the Number 10
Most of us are aware that we as Christians are to give, but many people get hung up on the 10% part of the tithe. The fact is that God knows we cannot all give an equal amount because we all have different resources, so He gave a percentage ensuring it would equal out.
"Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on." Mark 12:41-44
Jesus understood that even though this widow gave a small amount compared to the others, her heart was more giving because she gave a larger percentage of what she had than all the others. This verse is also interesting because this widow gave all she had to live on. There are many people today who say they can't afford to tithe but this woman realized she couldn't afford not to.

God knows we are naturally inclined to be selfish and will want to keep our money. So while, yes, we should give cheerfully, sometimes we need to take the step and actually give regardless of our internal feelings. The act of giving allows God to change our hearts so that ultimately we end up doing so cheerfully. Many of us, if we let our natural minds decide how much to give, would likely opt for a lot less than 10%. Having a standard keeps us accountable.

Trusting the Church with Your Tithe
There are people who don't have issue with the concept of giving or even the concept of giving 10% and this is commendable. But there are many people today who have issue with those they hand over their money to in Churches. They felt there are no proper accountability and that church leaders often use their money to finance their expensive life styles. Those who express this concern reveal two potential problems that need to be addressed:
1. These individuals trust isn't in God (but in church leaders). Or
2. These individuals are attending an untrustworthy church and should consider finding a new one.
The truth is, church leaders are responsible for using church money in a responsible way - they have more accountability for that. And as mentioned previously, most of them do a pretty good job of this. Still, it's worth bearing in mind that our accountability as believers is simply to give and trust that God will take care of the rest. Hopefully you are in a church where you can trust your leaders to do what is right. If you are unable to find such a church, then it would be beneficial to work on your trust in God, asking Him to help you trust the leaders He has placed you under (or pray to help you find a solution if there is a genuine problem of corruption present). But just remember, you're responsible for what you give and for your heart, and the church leaders are responsible for how to use it.

What is the Tithe?
The word "tithe" comes from an Old English root meaning "one tenth." It is the common English translation for the Old Testament Hebrew “asar” word group. The tithe was an offering of one's agricultural income to the Lord as an expression of thanks and dedication. In the Old Testament agricultural economy, tithes were paid not in cash, gold or goods but in crops or livestock, for only the agricultural fruit of the Promised Land was to be tithed—not other forms of income. Although today we commonly think of the tithe as "10 percent" as a result, apparently there are three tithes in the Old Testament, two every year and a third every third year, or an average of 23.3 percent of one's annual produce from the land. There was also provision for freewill offerings and personal giving above and beyond the tithe, so that the tithe never stood alone. Tithes were given by the patriarchs Abraham (Genesis 4:17-20) and Jacob (Genesis 28:22); a system of tithes was instituted in the law of God given through Moses (Deuteronomy 12; Deuteronomy 14 Deuteronomy 26; and the prophets rebuked the children of Israel for failing to give the tithe to God (Malachi 3:.
The idea of the tithe is still present in the New Testament (Matthew 23:23), but it is never explicitly applied to believers. Instead, almost all Christians are called to more extravagant freewill giving in response to the gospel of the Lord Jesus, based on faith in God as Provider (2 Corinthians 9:6-10).

Will God really "throw open the floodgates of heaven" if I start to tithe?
Perhaps. But we must recognize that this oft-quoted passage (Malachi 3:10) was written not as a blanket promise to Christians in all times and all places, but to a very specific group of people in history—the impoverished, insecure Israelites living in the land after their return from exile in Babylon. God requires more here than just tithe (Malachi 3:5): He requires His people to be generous in mercy and justice. Similarly, the Pharisees during Jesus' time were scrupulous tithers, but Jesus told them that they were condemned, for they preferred giving a fixed percentage of crops to the more demanding, more radical and more important (or as Jesus said, "weightier" pursuit of justice and mercy and the love of God with their resources (Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42. The command to give generously is not limited to a set percentage either in the Old Testament or the New. Instead, we are called to love our neighbor as we ourselves want to be loved (1 John 3:16-18), just as Jesus loved us (2 Corinthians 8:9). Of course, God in His gracious sovereignty may decide to bless us if we give generously. For instance, the apostle Paul taught the Corinthians they would be blessed if they contributed to the collection for the poor, so that they would "be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion" (2 Corinthians 9:11). But we should not tithe or practice any other form of giving solely for the economic benefits it might bring; our chief goal should be to glorify God (2 Corinthians 9:12-15).

Scripture on Tithing
Proverbs 3:9-10 - Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
2 Chronicles 31:4-5 - He ordered the people living in Jerusalem to give the portion due the priests and Levites so they could devote themselves to the Law of the LORD. As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the first fruits of their grain, new wine, olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything.
Genesis 14:19-20 - and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the LORD Almighty.

In closing, I'd like to point out that the percentage you ultimately give is between you and God, however there are many who do give 10% and want to offer encouragement to others to do the same. Think about it: If some individuals are willing to give 10% of their income (or more) to their church -- the place that feeds and teaches them -- and if some individuals are experiencing the blessings of giving away income to care for the needy and want to encourage others to experience the same blessings they've been experiencing - is that such a bad thing? Think about it: For God so loved us that He gave us gave us His only begotten Son. There is no true love without giving. Our giving should not be limited to Churches alone, but we should also extend hands of kindness to other people in need. And as we do this, we will surely experience the blessing of God in abundant.

How can someone in his or her right state of mind will decide to make someone else cry because of money. The long arm of law will always catch up with the bad guys in the US. You can always work hard and make money in a legitimate manner in the US. But if you decide to make a quicky, trust me the law will catch up with you.

Judas Iscariot is already in Heaven. He repented at the end. Beside, it was part og the perfect plan of God for Judas to take part in the betrayal and subsequent crucifixion of Christ.

Judas was an Innocent man until Jesus dipped the bread into the wine and gave it to Judas. Immediately, the devil took hold of him.

Don't forget that it was God that created the devil. (Isaiah 45 vs 7) God created both good and evil and He uses them as situation warrants.

Judas was Jesus closest pal. People should open their mind and receive fresh inspiration from God directly. Bible is a Summarized word of God. If you need perfect understanding of the Scriptures, God Himself will speak to you through your mind. God is in your heart.

The guy is wise. He has an entrepreneurial spirit. This business will grow and metamorphosed into something really big in the future. He will have certificate carrying graduates working for him.

Going to school no longer translate to getting employed automatically. You still have to use your head to create something to sustain you.

Go to school, learn how to read and write and become an entrepreneur. That's a sure path to success.

Why can't some folks just keep their mouths shut if they have nothing intelligent to contribute on Nairaland?. Must everything be based on tribalism? What is Ibo? What is Yoruba? and What is Hausa?. This division has brought you guys so much misery and you are not learning to make corrections. Even the educated ones among you are not helping the matter. Its only a fool that will keep doing the same thing over and over and expect to get different results.

In the western world, they see all blacks as Africans. Why don't you guys embrace each other, see each other as one and speak with one voice. That is the only way you can move forward and build a great society that your future ones will be proud of. Your tribalism and divisions won't take you anywhere.

This man in question is British. He was only born in Nigeria and has since gone to nationalize in the UK. If he is found guilty of the crime, be rest assured that he will pay for it.

You crop of new generations are expected to know better, reason better and behave better. Do not make the same mistakes the founding fathers of Nigeria made by taking the whole nation down the lane of tribalism for their own selfish reasons.

One Africa, one Nigeria, One black race!

This is a case Nigeria embassy in India should technically take up. There should be rule of law in every society. These are international students for crying out loud. Why can't I go to any country of my choice to study if I have my resources?

I will strongly recommend that Nigeria embassies all over should be completely overhauled and younger generations be posted as Ambassadors. How can we have old folks representing us as ambassadors when majority of the people in diaspora are younger generations.

These are simply common sense issues. Let the people who will identify with the pains and needs of others serve them. It's high time we started doing the things that matters in Africa. We should be more future focus than just satisfying our immediate needs.

The youths are the hope and the strength of every nation. If we failed to empower our young ones today, there will be no future for Africa.

I will strongly advise that the government put in place a counseling unit at the arrival point for the deportees. Some of the deportees have stayed abroad for years and hardly knows where to go or how to start life again. We need to start treating each other as human beings. No matter what happened they are still citizens of Nigeria. some of the returnees sometimes comes back with nothing. Government could also put in place a process where they could be given some stipends to support them for transporting and upkeep for some few days. It's so sad to note that some of the deportees dies suddenly as a result of untreated traumas associated with the deportations.

This is one sensitive area the government have failed to address all this while. University graduates versus Polytechnic graduates. While there has been a good number of University graduates that has graduated and gone ahead to do very well in life, the same could also be said about many Polytechnic graduates. It all goes down to individual approach to life and how hungry they are about their success. No school in the world will give you what you don't already have in you. They can only build on the foundation you already have from your primary schools and secondary schools.

In my own case for instance, I got an admission into University of Ibadan to study Geography while Federal Polytechnic Bida offered me an admission to study Accounting at the same time (My very first admission examination I will ever wrote). After much consultation, I decided to go into the Polytechnic to study accounting. So, it was a choice of course that drove me into polytechnic rather than my inability to pass the JAMB examination.

I graduated from the Polytechnic after five years successfully with upper credit. I got a permanent job during my service year and immediately enrolled for my ICAN examination which I passed with distinction (first attempt basis all though). I never repeated a paper. I will later obtain my MBA degree from Lagos State University.

I have worked in an International NGO, an Oil company and the two leading Telecom companies in Nigeria all based on merit and not through any connection.

I later migrated to the United State where I obtained my Ph.D degree and run my own Consulting firm.

I'm sharing my personal story to encourage someone out there who is thinking that he or she can't make it because of Polytechnic qualification. It is all about your belief system. I never experienced any discrimination through out my career years because of my polytechnic qualification.

Make use of whatever is available to you now and cross over along the line. Don't waste your productive years sitting at home waiting for University admission. Belief in yourself and work hard. You can be whatever you want in life. Polytechnic or University.

Having said all these, I will encourage the government of the day to find a lasting solution to this problem. Some good polytechnics should be upgraded to University of Technology level while the under-performing ones should be scraped. Let us have one universally recognized institution of learning. This way, our upcoming ones future will no longer be mortgaged.

You guys still see buildings and cars as an achievement? Material things are no longer an achievement to us. When you invest in people and make them better persons, then you have achieved. Stop celebrating mediocrity.

We tend to forget that men of God are just fellow human beings like us. They've got blood flowing in their veins too. I see nothing wrong in the Pastor celebrating his birthday anywhere he chooses to do it.

What I however have issues with is the idea of churches not doing enough for the poor in thier congregation while they are busy acquiring private jets and building mansions.

This is wrong and WAEC should have known better. We are talking about an NGO who want to empower individuals with academic excellence. The information should have been provided free. What overhead is it adding to WAEC as a government establishment?

I think everyone is being carried away with the quest for money. Don't be surprised if people started asking to be paid before greeting, the way we are going.

This shouldn't have happened.

It is absolutely wrong to touch a lady in innapropriate manner. That amount to molestation and its wrong. Ladies has to be protected. Marketing your wares does not give you any moral right to touch anyone.

This was a common practice with sellers at Yaba and other places.The "abokis" at yaba does it as well.

It simply shows that most guys need to be taught about respecting women. If you do that in developed countries, you will find yourself in jail.

Look, this is a clear indication that something is fundamentally wrong with Nigeria Education System and the providers of Education should cover their faces in shame.

The leaders can't provide a meaningful governance for the people without looting the treasury dry and cannot provide a quality education without bias, intimidation and harassment. It is a complete shame.

Why is it that Nigerians excel in their chosen careers and educational pursuit outside the Country and yet can't do it in their own Country.

I bet you if this young lady could have achieved this feat in Nigeria. Something urgent need to be done to revive our education system.

The picture i saw there does not look like any marriage certificate issued in Nigeria. There are no names, no address, no state, no signatures. Common! Marriage certificate doesn't expire.

By the way, what man in his right senses would want to marry and dissappear just like that? It's insane. Not all Nigerians are corrupt and not every Nigerians are desperate.

I didn't buy this story.

A labourer deserves his or her wages. There is no excuse why people should not be paid their agreed wages. This is a breach of contract and legal option could be exercised.

It is a great crime to deny people their genuine means of livelihood. Anyone who can help this brother to seek for justice will be highly appreciated.

Fellow Nairalander, let us educate our people. Do not attempt to travel outside the Country if you don't have any genuine reason to do so.

Gone are those days when you can travel outside to hussle and be successful. Every Nation on earth has got there own problems.

If you have your money to spend on holidays and will return home. Excellent! If you are going to further your education, perfect!

Use your hard earned money to do something meaningful for yourself in ur land. Travelling outside the Country is not what it used to be. Be aware of this.

Try and give the black race some dignity. If the whites had decided to run away from their country when things were hard, who would have built their nations that everyone is trying to run to now?

On the final note, if you don't have any genuine reason for traveling, please do not travel!

My advice to you all facing difficult times in the hand of your superiors at this time will be to speak up. No one deserves to suffer in silence. He is not the owner of the business. He is a fellow labourer be him Manager or CEO. The shareholders are the owners of business. Every other person on the team are labourers.

Send a very strong petition to your HR at the head office. Do not resign your appointment except its on performance issues and if you have gotten an alternative. No one is capable of determining your life for you except you alone.

Take the matter to God and present your case. Something will happen and he will leave for you. I have been in a similar situation before. I have to pray the devil out of my way. He left for me!

This is to all you wicked bosses out there; position is a place of trust. Stop managing your subordinates with fear and intimidation. You are supposed to treat them like a teammate and get the best out of them. This is 21st century. Remember there is law of karma waiting for you and your descendants. I know the Sister of one of the deceased who lived close to my place in Maryland, US. She confirmed the tragic loss. May their souls rest in peace.

One major priority of the present government ought to be reforms. Virtually every sector of the economy needs reform and government shouldn't shy away from it.

There's need for a total and complete reformation of Nigeria Police. What i will suggest is a creation of an elite police force comprising of the very best hands and brains with the minimum qualifications of B.Sc and HND. They should be allowed to run parralel with the current crop of what we have as police. They should have their own separate police stations and be allowed to function independently from the current police. With their own IG at the top of the command chain. Then gradually, the current police should be phased off with all the personnels retired and paid their compensation.

This is a very sad development at this point. These two tribes have been living in peace for quite a long time. Yes there has been cases of clashes between them in the time past, but were amicably resolve.

Share is predominantly Yoruba area while Tsaraji is populated by the Nupes. The two tribes have long settled along the major road stretching from Ilorin to Lafiagi. Hardly could anyone notice the difference between the two settlements when traveling along the road.

The present Governor of Kwara State is from Share, the Yoruba settlement area. It is a known fact that salaries have not been paid for some months now in the state. I hope this has not in some ways fueled the recent clash.

I hope a lasting solution could be found to resolve this conflict just as it was done between the Ife and Modakeke.

Conflicts and seseless killings is definitely not what we want now in the Country. So many innocent lives have been lost in recent years and we should apply for calm and show restraints at this time. We need peace and love more than anything else.

Let's call a spade a spade. Trump has made his opinion known. If the Muslim community have come out publicly to condemn the act of terrorism associated with Islam, things would have been better understood.

These folks killing and blowing up everyone that disagree with them are Muslims and they justified their claims with Quaran. If these were not so, why hasn't the Saudis and Islamic world come out with a strong voice to condemn the act?

It's only a fool that will open the doors of his house to his enemies to come and dine with him. While there are good muslims in large numbers who does not not believe in radicalization of Islam, there are also quite a large population who are ready to kill in the name of Islam.

The onus is on the Muslim leaders to start preaching love instead of hate and to call thier followers to order.

God definitely does not and will not instruct anyone to kill for Him. This is a challenge to every Muslim to convince those that do not share his faith that they are not at risk of being forcefully converted into Islam.

Who gave humanity the right and the moral justification to kill another human in the name of Religion? How dare you destroy a soul you cannot create? It's sickening.

Don't be discouraged my friend. In 1993, I wrote both UME Jamb and Poly Jamb. UME Jamb offered me admission in Bsc in Geography at University of Ibadan while Poly Jamb offered me Accounting at Federal Polytechnic Bida. I decided to choice Accounting and completed my HND in Accounting.

I passed all my ICAN papers on first attempt basis. I have worked in Oil Company and the two top Telecom companies. Today, I have a viable Consulting Firm and employs both HND and Bsc holders.

Don't let Certificate determine your life. Your destiny is in your hand. Keep pressing forward and believe in yourself.

Make no mistakes. That marriage is over. I have a friend who the husband sent abroad to her masters degree six months after their wedding. Immediately she got there, She changed all her contacts and went with someone else. I'm not saying that this applies to every women. But it's always better to tread with caution. Most especially nowadays that motive for most marriages is no longer love. Things are happening and its becoming extremely difficulty to trust.

A prophet is not without honour except in his own country. I remember meeting a young man from Ethiopia when I was in Nairobi in 2002. When he learnt that I ws from Nigeria l, he was all over me because of TB Joshua. When i told him I have never been to TB Joshua's Church before, he was confused. He said he was putting his life savings together to visist the Synagogue in Nigeria and meet with TB Joshua. Who he described as the Jesus of our time.

Well, here we are not recognizing this man and yet outsiders will do everything to receive him. I think we should learn to celebrate our own. Everyone can definitely not be wrong about this man.

I'm not trying to hold brief for them. But I think they are legitimate traders who are looking for a way to pay their foreign suppliers as a result of CBN policy on foreign exchange transactions.

The maximum withdrawal from ATM outside the Country is $200 or $300 depending on the Bank.

Nigerians will always look for a easy way out, otherwise they don't need to go through all this hazzles.

There are more appropriate ways of making international trade payments.

This is a good one from the Chinese organization. I believe the Commissioner of Education could use this as a model for other Schools in Lagos.

We need to invest more in the future of our incoming ones.

I think Nigeria situation deserves a more serious attitudinal approach than what we are witnessing at the moment. This idea of people taking a bow and go need to stop. Questions need to be asked and candidates need to justify their nomination into political office.

The two houses need to get more serious if we are expecting to see any meaningful change in this dispensation.

Religion is the greatest fraud the World has ever seen. Seek spiritual piety and damn religion. How can someone tell you to stone satan and you blindly obliged at the expense of your life. Little wonder some people are riding in private jets at the expense of poor members.
