The Federal Government has cleared the air on the alleged outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in Calabar, Cross River State. Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, who made the clarification at a press briefing on Friday in Abuja, said the EVD scare in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital resulted from the death of a patient, who was said to have manifested the symptoms of the killer disease. He said, “It has been investigated clinically, also using laboratory tests. The young man was down with symptoms that are similar with that of Ebola. His temperature was 37 degrees. But he had not traveled outside Calabar. His family has a case of chicken pox. “Our experiences in Ebola containment were used. The blood samples that were collected before his death were taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State and necessary tests were conducted to ascertain if he had Lasser Fever or Ebola. As we speak, it has nothing to do with Lasser Fever and Ebola as results confirmed that it was negative. But the results of what actually killed him would be ready on Monday.” Details Later… http://www.punchng.com/news/no-fresh-ebola-case-in-nigeria-fg/ cc: lalasticlala |

The Lagos State National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal on Friday upheld the declaration of Femi Gbajabiamila as the winner of the March 28, 2015 House of Representatives election in the Surulere Federal Constituency 1. The Justice C.U Anwuka-led three-man tribunal rejected the petition challenging the victory of Gbajabiamila and his party, the All Progressives Congress in the said election. Gbajabiamila, who is now the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, had been declared winner of the said election by the Independent National Electoral Commission after polling 21, 715 votes. The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Tony Ashikodi, who polled 14, 550 votes to emerge the first runner-up, had however headed for the tribunal to challenge Gbajabiamila’s victory. Ashikodi had alleged irregularities and a breach of the guidelines set out by the INEC for the conduct of the election. He claimed that Gbajabiamila and his party did not score the highest number of valid votes in the election and should not have been declared winner by INEC. He also claimed that the number of votes cast exceeded the number of registered voters. The petitioner’s lawyer, Kalu Onuah, urged the court to declare the election null and void in the circumstance as stipulated by Section 53(2) Electoral Act, 2010. But the tribunal on Friday held that the petitioner failed to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt, holding that the evidence adduced were not sufficient to establish the allegations raised. The tribunal held that the petitioner did not link any of the documents tendered with his allegation of irregularities that he had raised. The panel rejected Ashikodi’s testimony that there were multiple irregularities when he was not personally present at the collation centre. Gbajabiamila’s counsel, Dele Adeogun, had urged the tribunal to dismiss the petitioner’s case, saying the petitioner’s counsel misrepresented facts and misconceived the law. source : http://www.punchng.com/news/tribunal-upholds-gbajabiamilas-victory/

Joseph Blatter has appealed against his suspension by the Ethics Committee of world football body FIFA, his American lawyer Richard Cullen said on Friday. Cullen told newsmen that Blatter’s appeal was filed Thursday to the FIFA appeal committee. The news came after Blatter’s adviser Klaus Stoehlker had said an appeal against the provisional suspension would make no sense. The ethics committee on Thursday banned Blatter, as well as Michel Platini, the UEFA president and FIFA vice-president, for 90 days. The ban was in in connection with a criminal investigation by Swiss authorities. Blatter is suspected of mismanagement and Platini is named as the recipient of a “disloyal payment” from FIFA. Platini said on Thursday that he would appeal the ruling and, like Blatter, he has protested his innocence. Blatter and Platini are banned from all football activities for 90 days or until the appeal committee nullifies the ban. However, there is still the possibility of the ethics committee extending the ban for another 45 days. Platini is a candidate for the FIFA presidency at an extraordinary congress billed for Feb. 26, but he must however first go through an integrity check. ADVERTISEMENT Another potential candidate, Chung Mong-joon of South Korea, was banned for six years Thursday over other issues. As a result of this, and according to FIFA statutes, senior vice-president Issa Hayatou of Cameroon is now the acting FIFA president. source: http://www.punchng.com/news/blatter-appeals-against-suspension/ cc: lalasticlala |

Suspected armed robbers on Friday morning raided a micro finance bank located in the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, as well as the offices of Arik and Air Peace Airlines in Imo State. Over N20m and other valuables were said to have been carted away in the robbery that lasted just a few minutes. According to an eye witness, the armed robbers who besieged the airport in two unmarked vehicles, overpowered the security men attached to the bank. The source who stated that the noise of banging of doors and windows by the robbers coupled with their gunshots scared people away from the scene. An employee of Arik, who didn’t want to be named, said their offices were broken into, company and personal valuables of the workers were stolen. He said, “We are still in shock how the robbers could have been able to operate freely without being challenged, with the number of security men at the Airport, calls for serious concern because if the Airport cannot be safe, where else can be.” Meanwhile when contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident, however, said it was a case of burglary. According to him, “We got the report that some hoodlums broke into a Micro Finance Bank at the airport, but we did not get any report that they removed cash and no one was killed or wounded. “Already investigation is ongoing and the the two security men attached to the bank are currently being interrogated.” source: http://www.punchng.com/news/robbers-raid-imo-airport-escape-with-n20m/ |
