As much of a legend as SAF was, i'm sorry to say to all SAF fans out there, but SAF was selfish. Sebi talk of his retirement had been surfacing from around 5 years before 2013. So why didn't he retire after 2012? All he cared about was winning that title back from City so he could bow out with a bang. He then retired and left us with a squad full of old, fat and average players and then entrusted them into the hands of a deadbeat coach like Moyes. The result - disaster!

Anyways, i digress. In Vidic and Ferdinand's later years we were still one of the highest scoring teams in the EPL. Even before RVP. This proves that even with the old and crappy defence, attack still took more importance.

In the top 6 last season, we were 2nd in least goals conceded but 5th in goals scored. Only 6 points separated us from Liverpool and 4th. The only difference between us and Liverpool was De Gea. Tell me how we would ve left Emirates, Selhurst Park, Etihad and Anfield with a total of 10 points last season if we had someone like Karius in goal.

With all the bus and defensive set up, we still dey concede. So what makes u feel adding Godin and Alderweireld and more defenders would change anything? He has already spent more on defenders than attackers and only a mad man will keep doing the same thing everytime hoping for a different result.
So long as we ve DDG we can weather any storm at the back. What we should focus on is attack or did u not see the FA Cup final(where we actually played a high line)? Granted Chelsea sat back, we still could not score with all the possession and chances we had. Same in the away game against Newcastle.

I'm not saying we play ghen ghen football like Liverpool or tiki taka like City but if we dont figure out a way to start scoring goals, then nothing will change even if we buy all the defenders wey dey this world!!

Ed Woodward should have gone all out for a CB before the close of the window, I am not confident with Smalling, Jones and Rojo going into the new season. We should've payed the required price for Alderweireld at least.

I just read that other European teams can buy from England from now till the transfer window shuts even when the English transfer window is shut. Na wa oh!!!
However, English clubs are allowed to sign players on loan from now till Aug 31, so don't be surprise if you see English clubs taking advantage of this loophole just like PSG did with the Mbappe deal...

The thing is your analogy is wrong, can your car move if the front tires are okay and the other back tires are flat? There has to be a balance, I don’t think we have flat tires at the front because we really have some good players upfront that can cause damage and I have already stated that we need to change our system, now the thing is that if we won’t stop defending deep, we need better CB than the ones we have, we need CB that can pass out from the back, we don’t need CB that will be booting the ball anywhere belle face whenever they have the ball, our defenders are so prone to errors passing out from the back that DDG doesn’t trust them to pass too, he will rather boot the ball to Lukaku or Sanchez than pass to his CBs, anytime our CB has the ball, the first thing on the mind is to either pass back to DDG or boot it away, there’s no way you play a high line pressing with those kind of defenders.

We need a system change quite alright and I think Mou has come to realize that since we might be going with 4-3-3 this season, I still maintain that our CBs are the reason we usually defend deep.

What I am trying to point out with the RVP example was that even SAF bought short term fix to help the squad.

I have been saying it since yesterday that our defenders are one of the reason we tend to defend deep, Smalling and Jones or Lindelof can’t play a high line defence, our only CB that can play a high line I think is Bailey. We can’t play out from the back because our CBs can’t. They are so limited, clumsy, slow and unstable. We can’t play the way you want with our defenders, pressing high up the pitch requires technical defenders that can join attack, those that can hold the ball and pass around, ask yourself, can our CBs do any of those? Is it Smalling that will be passing behind his team mate or Jones that will be caught napping when it matters, we have to be honest with ourselves, as long as we retain this current CB and defenders, we will continue to defend deep because they can’t play a high line and the team will continue to suffer for it.

I disagree....u can check Fergie & the great Liverpool triumphs, what made those teams successful from the 70s till date was their attacks even the fluke Lecister EPL trophy was as a result of their potent attackers (Mahrez, Okazaki, Vardy & the likes).

It is not about having the meanest defence, it is about having a solid defence base. I am not advocating for Mou, I am only stating what I know about the game. Defence is very important.

Our defence wasn’t mean because DDG saved more shot than Ederson had to face, DDG was our saving grace last season, no wonder he won the Club Best Player Award.

I am of the opinion that’s Mou doesn’t trust his defenders to hold their own that’s why he prefer defending deep instead of a high line. Look at our match against Chelsea in FA cup final, see how the goal comes about and you will see what I’m talking about. Most of our defenders can’t play out from the back, pressing high up the pitch with defenders like Smalling and Jones is going to be disastrous (well that’s what I think, I might be wrong)

The reason we finish 19pts behind City was because of the silly point we lost against the lower teams and our inconsistency. While I agree that Pep style of play played a part in their campaign last season, you can’t deny the fact that their defence play a huge part, if not Pep could have stick with Mangala, Sagna, Hart, Bravo, Kolarov and co.

That’s what I think anyway, it doesn’t necessarily makes me wrong or makes you right. Shalom.

We scored 38 goals less than City and conceded just 1 goal more. We were 5th in goal scoring and 2nd in goals conceded, but somehow our defence is the problem.

City conceded less goal - 1st
Utd conceded 1 more goal than Utd - 2nd
Tottenham conceded 8 more goals than Utd - 3rd
Liverpool scored 14 more goals than Utd and conceded 10 more goals - 4th

Check the above again and you will see that defense is as important as the attack. It’s not everytime that you will outscore your opponent that’s why a solid defense is essential. I am not saying Defence is our only problem, what I am saying is that any serious minded team will pay attention to the team defensive aspect also because it is equally important.

DDG save more shot than Ederson had to face ffs, that’s to tell you how much our opponent were tearing through our defence. Exchange DDG with Karius and we might have ended up 6th or 7th.

Last season was a record breaking season, it’s an exception and not the norm.

Check over the last 10 season or beyond and you will find out that most teams that won the league went through a period where they had to go through dry goal scoring spell and grind out results winning 1 nil, even Fergie team go through those periods. There was this Fergie title winning seasons that we won almost 10 games 1 nil. A solid defense is essential to sustain any title challenge. For all of Liverpool goals galore last season they finished 4th. For all of Pep goals in his first season, they finished 3rd, the question is what changed between Pep first season and the second season? Therein lies your answer.

NB: All im trying to say is that defense is equally as important as attack. The kind of defenders you have will determine the kind of set up you will employ. We all saw how AVB tried using high line with Terry n co, we saw how it turned out.
