he was flanked on both sides by a policeman.
I think it should rather be he was flanked on both sides by two policemen.
Or
he was flanked on each side by a policeman.
Very good narration, sir. This is an awesome piece. I hope to read more of your works. 1 Like 2 Shares |

Literature › Re: HELP! What Exactly Is Constructive Criticism And How Is It Done? by LarrySun(m): 10:11am On May 08, 2015 |
Divepen1: Constructive Criticism is any criticism that will help the criticized. It is is secret or open criticism meant for the eyes of the criticized alone ( which a few might see and understand). It's always good to see a person who can criticise without making fuss about it, to see someone that can tell you how to correct your work without showing others. A constructive critic would tell you to reread your work but a bad one will tell you that it is full of blunders, which even it were true would reduce your morale. That is the secret constructive criticism
However, when a good critic see your blunder and does not to tell you to read your work again. He would point them out to you with possible correction: that is an open constructive criticism. Brilliantly put. This absolves me of the charges Standd placed on me. 1 Like |

standd: You actually spent time quoting and duelling with IDFWU, straining and showing off your literary/grammatical muscles, when you could have spent that time outlining and helping to correct some of the errors you noticed. I said the OP should re-read his post. I was sure he would catch the obvious errors by doing that. The errors were majorly omissions and spellings. Many of us are guilty of such errors; and they can be easily seen and corrected if we check what we have written. I didn't think I had to outline the errors when he could have easily noticed them on second glance. And @ bolded, I'm surprised that you didn't see who cast the first stone; who showed the 'grammatical muscles', as you put it. Surely, you would have read where he said I claimed to know everything when I only said Davidflo should re-read what he posted. IDFWU bluntly insulted and tried to publicly emasculate me. I'm sure that even you would not have turned the other cheek. Truly, it was wrong of me to have replied him so coldly. He forced words out of me. If I had kept quiet, he would have assumed a Goliath complex. Sometimes, you've got to put people in their places. 1 Like 1 Share |

Ohibenemma: The point here shouldn't be about the gory descriptions in some of the stories, but ABOUT THEIR RELEVANCE to the entire story.
Writing about murder just for the sake of getting the readers hooked is a no no, if it would have no bearing on the rest of the story.
Frank 3:16(17) does it, making the reader mentally squirm in disgust, but at the end you see that the bloody scene(s) is highly relevant to the entire story. Don't do it just for the fun of it and end up losing yourself in the process. That's just like a man who had enough money to build a house, using normal corrugated roofing sheets, but decides to shoot above his means by using the entire budget for oven-baked, roofing panels; only to, after another 15 years, still be searching for the funds to make his dream come true.
A writer sure gets bolder with experience and recognition...we see this in Chimamanda's latter works where sexual expressions are generously(almost irritatingly) detailed...far cries from the cautious 'testing the waters' mien of Purple Hibiscus. You should calm down, sir. |

Rather than propounding some half-baked explanations, I shall contend myself, in this regard, with pointing out baked explanations. I hope I would not be stepping on too many tails.
What is Constructive Criticism? No, I'm not going to bore you with an unnecessary explanation when it has already been explained by the great Texanomaly herself. But I reckon you will agree with me that constructive criticisms can be given only by constructive critics.
Who is a Constructive Critic? He is anyone painfully honest. He is a vicious butcher, plunging his grammatical knife into the bowels of a poor literary specimen. Like a carpenter, he jams the end of his hammer on the awkward joints of jarring clauses. He is the unkind pugilist that slams his knuckles on the temple of disabled syntax and crippled tenses. The constructive critic is the furnaced knife that cauterizes the bleeding wounds of grammatical nonsense.
The honest critic can be very raw; even sometimes cruel. The question is: Who really wants the constructive criticism? Are we not really entangling ourselves in our own verbal cobwebs? A piece of work blown into the court of a constructive critic may take a yoke of oxen to drag it out again unscathed. I say we should be careful of what coxcombries we wish for. Constructive criticism goes beyond the words of the tribes of Isreal who constantly praise Moses for performing wonders with a magical staff.
It is a pity to still discover that some of the writers who solicit for the so-called constructive criticisms only end up screaming foul at the slightest trimming of their hedges. The literary world would be better off without these acidulated sciolists and balderdashing decadents who are dizzy with their own intellectual altitude. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

The combination of these three leaves me with the impression that likes do attract. You're right, sir. I'll have to tone down their smart dispositions. |
