plainmirror: Here is your answer in a nutshell. Good life and money is what majority of human populace crave for; they are found over there. Did I hear you say 'startup a small scale business? Well goodluck in your venture but be watchful of how you channel 80% of your operating capital to fuel your generator. Not to talk of the security challenges that abound.
We are merely existing in 9ja. Go over there and you will see that it is not as easy as you think to have a good life, especially when you are a foreigner or an immigrant. Do you know how much it costs to retrain and get qualified over there before you can get a job? Or you think your Naija certificate will automatically get you a good role without any hassle, in a foreign country? Or is it the menial jobs and dishwashing that the poorly-qualified and lower class do over there, that you think will give you a good life? Finally, it is not all jobs that require electricity. Do your research. I have a friend who offers horticulture & gardening services on a medium-scale level to homes, companies etc. He makes more than an entry level staff monthly, in a high-end bank. Another one is heavily into trading & distribution. I cannot tell you how many six-figure zeros I saw in his bank statement, when he mistakenly left it behind in my car. |

Travel legally to Australia, Canada, new Zealand and Germany, to do just what exactly?? What kind of jobs are you talking about? First of all, do you know how much the ticket, visa, travel documents, accommodation abroad etc., will cost you?? Calculate it. If you use that money to set up a small scale business in Nigeria, after doing your research don't you think you would be better off? In these countries you mentioned, you cannot even get a decent professional job, without re-training to get their own certifications. Do you know how long it takes, or how much it costs?? |

abmendozer: Education is over rated in Nigeria joor! I went to a friend's jamb tutorial class and I was sad because the students think life is the way they picture it. I never realised all these things till I finished the time wasting NYSC last year. Those that have graduated years back are still struggling with their life not to talk of recent graduates. The only thing that is important is to have a hand work. Btw, you think having connection is an easy task? You think these top people want to help anybody aside from their children? You better wake up! If you are not from a wealthy family, just work and and slowly and gradually you will get there...but if you are from a rich background, just count your blessings. Finally if you have any opportunity to leave this country RUN and don't look back Another shallow epistle from a person who has not thought outside the box. You think simply leaving this country is the key to success? Go abroad and see how many Nigerians are still living from hand to mouth with nothing to show for it, because they have mortgaged their future to the system over there. Many of them cannot even come home, because after many years abroad they have nothing to show for it. Do you know the number of Nigerian graduates with Masters' degrees driving taxi cabs, in New York? Others have taken to crime and illegal means to make money, out of desperation. While quite a good number have had to marry foreigners of low repute, just to obtain a residence permit. At the end of the day, those foreigners show them pepper and they can't do jack, because they lack the means to move. Oga, think deeply before you fall into the trap of thinking 'going abroad' is a trip to paradise, and you end up making such mistakes. For you to say NYSC is a waste of time, shows that you do not even understand what NYSC is all about. A number of my colleagues made use of their NYSC period to engage in small-scale businesses or learn new skills at their place of primary assignment, which ended up fetching them good money. I had a friend who finished from UNILAG and was posted to Warri. The guy got curious about kerosene business, made friends who taught him all he needed to know and got connected to people at the depot. At the end of his NYSC year, he made enough money to buy a small car. Only fools think that education is over-rated. Ask Buhari about the insults he received during elections and till date, because of his lack of an education. Education is a stepping stone, a periscope that broadens your horizon, and a tool that enables you to move from where you are, to where you want to be. At the very least, it gives you a professional identity, so that the public does not see you as a nonentity. It validates the little you have learnt. But it is not the final prize that puts food on your table. You still have to do more after getting an education, in order to become successful. And this is where people miss it. They think an educational certificate will automatically get them a job, without realising it is just one of the tools that shows them how to acquire skills that help them get ahead, or create a job. There are so many little things you can do to keep body and soul together, pending when you get a good job. Think outside the box, study hard and network. Learn from entrepreneurs and visit small-scale industries for ideas. Above all, pray to God to send you divine help and inspiration. With God on your side, you will surely make a difference. |

RedboneSmith: Easy answer. We have already been through this. Population movement.
The Germans had no empire before they were unified in the 19th century. How did they Germanize so much of Slavic territory at a time when they were just a bunch of tiny city-states and counties? Answer: They have a large population. They were migrating into less-populated areas. By virtue of their population they could assimilate aboriginal populations. Simple. You rely too much on the 'Empire' hypothesis as the explanation for cultural/linguistic assimilation. Guy, here is another high-five. Abeg collect one bowl of 'isi-ewu' join that chilled bottle. Cire80: You're not making any point. Ebonka is an indigenous Ika name. I don't know where you got it that Ebonka was the first king of Agbor. Agbor is a very ancient Kingdom. Existing alongside Bini. It's the oldest of all the Kingdoms East of Bini Kingdom. The main founder of Agbor was Agbon, an Edo name and the first dynasties of Agbor Ogele/Igiso dynasties existed in a place called Ominijie, another Edo word. Ebonka was the first king of the 3rd dynasty which is the Dein dynasty after the royal quarters was relocated from Agbor Nta to the present location of Imenobi. I don't understand what point you're trying to make. Guy, that slimy character has already made up his mind on what he wants to believe. I have many proposal in my mail already. They will all get my mail today. Okay, o!! It is those that want to collect =N=600 per article from you that I pity, because I can easily see that the 600 naira will not even be able to cover the bandwidth they need to research and write your articles. See what others are being paid here: DonaldYusuf: One question that is often asked by writers and would be writers is whether or not writing can be a viable business or profession. It is public knowledge that in the past in this part of the world writing was not given much consideration as a profession; it was believed that writers were broke. This assertion made a lot of writers to shy away from writing. But thanks to today’s global knowledge economy where information has become the newest oil.
Information is now king; content creators are now in high demand and are paid well. The demand for content has exploded a business known as freelance writing with some top freelance writers earning as much as $500 dollars per article. That’s $500 American dollars for just an article. Let’s do the math in Nigerian Naira: with exchange rate of say 490 Naira to a dollar, $500 will be N245,000. Hmm!
Interesting? But don’t rush into freelance writing if you don’t know the ropes. There are things to learn in order to succeed as a freelance writer. Here I will be sharing some of the steps I took and how I made my first $180 dollars as a writer. Let’s go…
1. Study the business
Freelance writing just like every other business must be studied to equip yourself with relevant information and knowledge. Read materials about the business and ensure you know how it operates. Don’t rush into it without understanding it; if you rush into it you will eventually rush out. I remember taking time to read articles and other materials on the subject of freelance writing.
I once saw a thread on Nigeria’s biggest online forum, Nairaland.com on freelance writing. I took my time to read the author’s contents, the questions readers posted and the answers she gave; I also asked my own questions and got answers. I was equipped with lots of information about the business of freelance writing.
2. Have a mentor and learn from them
It’s not enough for you to just read materials, your development will be faster if you get a mentor that will guide you through the process. In any profession or business, having a mentor is one of the best decisions anyone could ever make. A mentor guides you and prevents you from making some mistakes which he made while starting just like you. A mentor makes the process faster and simpler for you. I made lots of research about freelance writing in Nigeria and was able to find a mentor who is doing very well as a freelance writer. In fact I think he is the biggest freelance writer in the country. I subscribed to his website, read his mails and bought his e-book.
3. Polish your skills and be versatile
One very important thing is to really develop your skill. This is one of the most important things to do because it is your skills that people will pay for; so if you are good you will get referrals. And every serious entrepreneur knows the power of referrals and mouth-to-mouth advert.
4. Treat your Freelance writing as a business
One mistake many new freelance writers make which eventually affects their freelance writing business is the mistake of not taking it as a business. Freelance writing is a business and just like every other business, must be taken serious. To succeed in freelance writing you must treat it the way Dangote will treat his business or the way Wiz Kid will treat his music business/career. If you don’t take it serious you might never make any money from it. To show my seriousness, i opened a corporate account with GTBank for my freelance writing business; I brought my writing business under a registered company name and then opened a corporate account. It’s an indication of seriousness and professionalism.
5. Have a writer blog/website for your Freelance writing
Before I encountered my freelance writing mentor I didn’t take the idea of having a blog or website serious, but after buying his e-book and devouring the content, I saw the importance of having a writer blog or website. Your writer website or blog will serve as your contact; the platform to advertise your services; it makes it easy for potential clients to trust and value you and serves as a channel to display your works. In fact your writer blog or website is your office.
6. Market your Freelance writing business
As noted in our step 4, freelance writing is a business and must be treated as such. One of the major things businesses do is to market their products and services – marketing is the lifeblood of any business. It was marketing that brought me the first major client that paid me my first $180 dollars to write some content. I marketed my freelance writing using two major methods when I started out as a freelance writer. The first method I adopted was to tell people I knew that I was now a freelance writer, and could help them with their content. The second step I took was placing an advert on OLX. I placed a simple advert on OLX advertising my writing services and added my phone number to the advert. I didn’t spend any serious money since OLX is basically free except if you want to rank high.
After a while I got a client through one of the persons I told I was a freelance writer. He recommended me to a client in Lagos and gave him my number. The prospect called me and asked for my charges after we had discussed what he wanted. I charged him $303 dollars but we later settled for $180 dollars. Days later, he made a deposit of 50% of the agreed sum into my account, and I started the work. Later on, I got a client via OLX. He saw my advert on OLX and called. We agreed on cost and 50% deposit was made into my account. That was the beginning of my freelance writing business.
7. Ask for a commitment before you commence the project.
If you look at point 6 above you will notice that I always asked for an initial deposit from my clients before I start writing. Don’t be afraid of asking for payment before the commencement of a client’s work. Professionals act that way, you are also a professional so you should act as one.
The above were steps i took to make my first $180 dollars as a freelance writer, and i still take these steps to remain in the business.

No, you are the one with a log of wood in your eye, that prevents you from seeing clearly, yet you want to remove the so-called speck in another person's eye that is only visible to you. You have made unsubstantiated allegations about my comments and actions. I called on you to substantiate it by providing evidence, and this is the kind of response that you come up with?? My, oh my. Why is it that you chaps cannot say anything good, if someone decides NOT to toe your line? I have explained my point to you, and yet you have chosen to misunderstand it, because of the bias within your mind. The Yoruba guy drew first blood. Yes. But your Igbo guy retaliated and responded to him in kind, using words that were far weightier and more vicious than his own, only to then turn around and complain of hate! Can you beat that!! And when this was pointed out, you jumped to his defence by making unsubstantiated allegations. May God deliver you from the bias that colours your mind, Mr. moderator. |

bigfrancis21: If you are going to call out one guy's actions, you're indirectly stepping in here to judge or judge both parties, why not balance the equation by calling out the other party's actions? Is that how law in your own periphery of thinking works? One side carries the entire blame, the instigator lacks blemishes? Really? Again you are chasing shadows. I have absolutely no business calling out the instigator. And I did not call out your Igbo friend. All I did was point out to him, that there was no need crying foul, after he had retaliated in such a vicious manner. bigfrancis21: Your 'outstanding track record' is easy for anyone to see. Anyone can simply visit your profile, click on posts and the judgment thereof is left for the person to see. Stop the snide comments. He who alleges must prove. So provide the details. Aren't you supposed to be a moderator? Aren't moderators supposed to be objective and impartial and factual? |

Yorobastard: It's called "an eye for an eye" and stop defending someone that is wrong...All you could do was correct the yoruba guy but you came to his defence which in other words supported his remarks as well.
So if you look at it properly you are the one crying foul and your nigga drew the first blood You are too funny for words. The Yoruba guy was not the one complaining but your fellow Igbo brother. He was the one who had retaliated using words that were far more vicious than the one dished out to him, only for him to turn round and start crying foul after he had retaliated in a nasty manner. So what defence are you talking about? I did not support the Yoruba guy, I merely pointed out to the Igbo guy that he had already retaliated, so why was he complaining? And why are you calling the Yoruba chap, my niqqa? |
