Xiadnat: Below Is a quote that I got from an article (a blog really) that I was reading for my MBA course about "medical outsourcing or tourism" In Nigeria. Woefully, many Nigerians that can afford health care are leaving to countries such as Europe, US, India to get medical care termed "medical tourism". And it is destroying Nigeria's health care system and economy in general.
I am just so saddened. Even the title of this post is heartbreaking. So many issues with Nigeria's (or Africans') health care system, it's hard to even know where to begin.
[i]"The World Health Organisation ranks the country’s health system 197th out of the 200 nations in its 2009 report. In terms of life expectancy, Nigeria ranks 212th in the world. In terms of expenditure on health as a percentage of GDP, it ranks 139th in the world. It has the 2nd highest number of deaths pa from HIV/AIDS. The risk of major infectious disease is categorised as “very high”. In the UK, a recent Freedom of Information request revealed that three-quarters of the doctors struck off the General Medical Council (GMC) register in the past years are foreign-trained; those trained in Nigeria rank second..... When I read about three-quarters of Nigerians getting struck off the GMC register in the UK, I laughed! Why won't they get struck off when most of them have such an arrogant, condescending attitude to their patients and their work especially in Nigeria? They often carry their bad behaviour abroad with them. The first rule abroad, is that as a doctor you MUST do everything possible to save lives. Go the extra mile, if you have to. In Nigeria, many doctors (not all) are rather nonchalant and carry themselves as demi-gods. Each time they carry that attitude abroad to foreign hospitals, they get busted, especially when they do not follow the rules. I asked a young doctor here in the General Hospital in Marina, Lagos that I wanted to see the consultant who was in charge of a relative of mine, that was on admission. His condition had not improved and I wanted to know why. The young doctor flared up, aghast. He wanted to know why I had the effrontery to request to see the medical consultant. He threatened to abandon the patient if I did not rescind my decision. Now, can you imagine such a doctor practicing abroad with this kind of attitude? Of course, his patients would lodge a complaint against him at the medical council. Doctors in Nigeria are also fond of going on strike at the least provocation. Abeg, I don tire..... |

Good, he should make sure he fixes the road leading to the Lekki Phase 1 exit gate at the 3rd roundabout, right next to This Present House. That road leads to the Ikate-Elegushi roundabout, and it is an eyesore. Anytime there is a little rain, the road turns into a swimming pool of mud. Yet, Fashola collects millions from home owners in that axis as land use charge. |

All your power plant can not guarantee our hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and public buildings uninterrupted power supply, but Fashola's 47MW can.
So, of what use and relevance is all your obsolete MW and power plant to the people of Lagos and other Nigerians?
It's not about quantity, it's all about quality.
Shallow TaNoid mentality.. Hehehehe...!! There is nothing TANoid about this. Is it everyone that disagrees with the APC spin masters that is a TAN member?? See your shallow mindset... Just explain how Fashola plans to use his 47MW to supply uninterrupted power to the 1.6 million homes and 15 million residents of Lagos within 6 months, like he boasted!! Chikena! Forget that hype about using 47MW to supply steady power to all the roads in Lagos... it is a big fat lie! There are still long stretches of roads dotted with street lights in this very Lagos that lack power supply, especially along Lekki-Epe expressway. Abi, I should take a picture and post it right here for you to see?? |

From what is on ground, if government scraps the toll fee, government has to pay the developers. Basic law. So, where would the government find that money? Basic wetin?? And how has the state been paying for the maintenance of Bode Thomas, Adeniran Ogunsanya Road in Surulere, Bourdillon Road and Alexander Avenue in Ikoyi, Cele - Ilasamaja bridge as well as the other roads that have been constructed so far in Lagos without toll gates across them?? They collect all manner of rates, land use charge, taxes for different kinds of permits from both commercial and private establishments...yet they lack enough money to maintain a small bridge across the water. bidex: which one has GEJ generated in 6 years? Have you heard of 750MW Olorunsogo IPP Phase II?? And the other NIPP Projects in the country?? Read about it here: The Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC), owners of the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), has refuted reports that the 750 megawatt-capacity Olorunsogo Phase 2 Power Plant built under the NIPP in Ogun State, which was at the weekend inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan, had earlier been inaugurated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
NDPHC’s General Manager in charge of Communication and Public Relations, Mr. Yakubu Lawal, said in a statement on Tuesday that the completion and inauguration of the phase II Olorunsogo plant was another manifestation of President Jonathan’s commitment to deliver on his promises to complete inherited projects.
According to him, what Obasanjo actually inaugurated was the 335 megawatt-capacity Olorunsogo Phase I Power Plant, built by the federal government for the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
He stated that the phase II is a combined circle plant consisting of 4No GE made Gas turbines, 4No Heat Recovery Steam Generators and 2No Steam turbine units each turbine unit of 125MW capacity and a total capacity of 750MW. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/obasanjo-never-inaugurated-olorunsogo-ll-power-station-says-ndphc/202698/ |

Kola4uniadgog: The entire capacity of lagos ipp is just 47 mega watts and he is here boasting. Why didn't build one with a larger capacity. Even if other states benefit from it, the larger beneficiaries will be lagosians. It is on record that the first governor to build a power plant in Nigeria is peter odili former governor of rivers state. And he didn't just build one, he built two power plants. That was almost 8 years ago. So if a governor has been able to build 5 power plants with 47 mega watts capacity.that does not even power any lagos household. What he deserves is serious tongue lashing not praises. Thank you o, abeg help me tell them!! Speak to those applauding Fashola's rhetoric and 'alawada' antics, without taking the trouble to dissect and thoroughly analyse his comments. Lagos State needs 10,000MW of electricity for steady power supply. It has taken Fashola 5 good years to generate just 47MW of electricity. Is it the 47MW that he wants to sell to the Discos and also use to provide uninterrupted, steady power supply to the entire Lagos metropolis? Ironically, on the day he launched the Lekki IPP I went down the Lekki-Epe Expressway from Ikate-Elegushi to VGC Estate and guess what?? The entire stretch of the road between Jakande Estate and Ikota junction was in darkness. All the street lights were dead due to lack of power supply. Think people, think!! Don't be hoodwinked by empty promises, that have no bearing in reality. |

Olalan: one of the biggest scam of the 21st century is the so called privatisation of the power sector. Nigerians now have to pay so much for consuming epileptic power supply. The bills they bring these days is something else imagine a three bedroom flat paying 8k per month for 5hrs of power per day. Worst hit are people without meters. Mtcheww! They gave you a bill of 8k per month for a 3-bedroom flat?? and you are not happy? Come to Festac Town in Lagos. They once brought a bill of 60k (i.e. sixty thousand naira) to a 3-bedroom apartment in one month, despite the fact that the entire house was unoccupied for the better part of that month! We have written letters, we have complained and till date nothing has changed!! May God deliver us from Eko Disco! |

Oildichotomy: There are electricity cabals holding the country's meter business to ransom. There was a report on Channels TV a while ago about a meter assembling or production plant in Lagos that is almost going moribund because of the cabals that prefer the imported ones for their own selfish reasons. If only we allow things to be done the right way, this nonsense complaints of dollar increment scam won't arise.
We are the change we seek This is the height of extortion. Ordinary residents or citizens are not allowed to buy pre-paid meters on the open market. They need to go through the Discos and the Discos (especially Eko Disco) are using this to milk the citizens dry. I am sure that if they threw it open and allowed people to buy their pre-paid meters directly from the manufacturing companies, the prices would drop and this scam called extortion would die a natural death. |

One advise: Don't think everyone on Nairaland are children. Thanks. Very funny. This is a public forum. You made a statement & it attracted a response from me. Now you are claiming that you left banking years back as a bank manager. Who asked you?? The topic was about power. For you to claim that power supply was steady in the 70s and 80s, is hogwash. It definitely was not steady in many parts of Lagos & Enugu, so please do NOT use your own small area in Enugu as a yardstick to declare that power supply was constant during that period! bank manager indeed! mtcheeew.... |

In the eighties when Peugeot was doing the same thing, they sourced their windscreen from West African Glass Co. & they got their tyres from Michelin & Dunlop. For those working at the Nissan plant and earning a living, they are surely heaping praises on those who made it possible for them to set up the assembly plant. |

All the military regimes paid no attention to amenities. So that's when the problem started.
Note: I lived in Enugu then so I can't speak for other parts of the country. Bros, unless you lived on a university campus with a back up generator that starts up immediately NEPA starts its load shedding exercises, there is no way you would have had uninterrupted power supply in the late 70s and 80s. Nothing like uninterrupted power supply existed in those days in Lagos. I know this because I recall my dad buying petrol for his small generator even in those days, in Lagos........ especially in the Ikoyi area where we lived. So please do not peddle falsehood. Ask those who were old enough to remember what happened during that period. |
