The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday slammed a fine of N40 million on a former Presidential candidate, Chief Ambrose Albert Owuru for filing a frivolous suit to stop the inauguration of the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 29.

The appellate court ordered the politician to pay the fine of N10 million each to President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney General of the Federation AGF, Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, and Tinubu whom he made 1st to 4th defendants in the issue.

Justice Jamil Tukur, who read the lead judgment of the three man panel of the court, held that Owuru embarked on gross abuse of court process by filing a frivolous, vexatious and irritating suit to provoke the respondents.

The Court of Appeal held that the grievances of Owuru against the 2019 presidential election was not only strange but uncalled for because the grievances had been pursued up to Supreme Court and was dismissed for want of merit.

Justice Tukur said that the action of Owuru to resuscitate the case that died since 2019 at the Supreme Court was aimed at making the lower courts to go on collision course with the supremacy of the apex court.

But shutting the IREV is irrelevant. Voters register and the forms all parties signed at the PUs takes precedence. Read osun state judgement. Shutting down the irev doesnt mean anything, the signed forms still appeared on the Irev eventually. If the forms the party agents signed are different from the ones INEC announced, thats all that matters to the court. Bring out the dicrepancies in all the states and show they were materially different to the election result.

Richard is British High Commissioner to Nigeria and the UK Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) based in Abuja, from May 2023.

Richard was the UK Executive Director at the World Bank Group Boards from 2018 to 2022. His role included ensuring that the improvements agreed by shareholders in 2018 were implemented. Richard worked on the global COVID response, the UK’s G7 and COP26 presidencies, and the World Bank Group’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its global impact.

He was previously a Director at the Department for International Development (DFID), overseeing Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories Division. This included country programmes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and 10 other overseas offices and UK-based departments.

Before that, Richard served as Head of Office in Pakistan (2013 to 2015) and Nigeria (2009 to 2013), and Head of Corporate Human Resources (2006 to 2009). He has also worked in DFID’s top management group and DFID offices in Zambia, Bangladesh and India.

The person that sued Abure to court for forging documents (which he did) was a long time LP party member who felt cheated cos they believed abure was bribed.
