Hi house,

Is there any one that is kind enough to suggest some Universities in US that can accept a very low GRE scores to pursue MSc program? I just want some suggestions. The applicants has 3 degrees though.

Thanks in anticipation for your response.

Me: Good morning sir (he was still talking to the lady)
Me: Good morning sir (still talking)

VO: Pass me your passport
I passed my documents

VO: Why are you going to Georgia State University
Me: I am going for my Masters in Mathematics with concentration in Biostatistics

VO: That is a strange combination; Mathematics and Biostatistics
Me: The Department at Georgia State University is the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

VO: Good, that makes sense, so you're a Statistician
Me: Yes

VO: How many other schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 6 other schools

VO: Mention them
Me: George Washington University, American University, Villanova University, Bowling Green State University, Michigan Technological University, and University of Iowa

VO: How did you get this scholarship
Me: During my application process, I indicated that I was interested in being considered for a graduate assistantship position, I submitted my high GRE scores, my impressive transcripts, I wrote a statement of purpose, uploaded my resume, also, I submitted three letters of recommendations from my lecturers, also, the graduate director, Dr. Xx scheduled me for a Skype interview, I believe the admission committee were impressed with my overall profile and my performance during the skype interview

VO: he said something about University of Iowa, didn't hear him properly
Me: The program at University of Iowa is Masters in Statistics not Biostatistics

VO: Three colleges offers Statistics in University of Iowa
Me: ooh yes, I applied to the one in College of Arts and science (I said somewhere that I was rejected by University of Iowa but admitted in the remaining school)

VO: I actually graduated from Statistics but the one offered by the College of Education
Me: oooh waoh, that is really nice, (smiling)

VO: I would be approving your Visa, the program at University of Iowa is actually nice, I wish you were going there, have a nice study in GSU, he said something about the visa pick up and resuming not earlier than 30days of the program start date
Me: I smiled, thank you sir and have a wonderful day grin grin grin

Ps: anytime he looked at me, I smiled cheesy grin grin

No document asked except passport and i20

I have two more posts incoming grin cheesy grin cheesy grin cheesy

It kinda breaks my heart knowing you wrote this coz I respect you a lot, you are my mentor. I just think you have a different perspective.
You don't have to like the drama, humour or happiness I bring with me or how I roll with the guys, make people warm up to me or something. That's why I am me, I am allowed to be ME and I won't change for any reason.
If other females are considered as sexual objects or something trifling, well I am not and I have never tolerated disrespect. I know where to draw the line.
Maybe you are having a bad day, that's okay. You will be fine and you will always have my utmost respect ma'am.

Calm down, okay? Next time, you can address such displeasure by dropping a PM to her. She has been a wonderful resource here on this platform since ages. Always available and very consistent. Though she is not impeccable, she still earns the respect of most people on this platform. It is not everytime you flaunt your verbal prowess. Choose your battles wisely.

Visa finally issued after 45 days of being placed on AP... No funding. 294 Gre scores and so many errors on my Ds160...

I would advise those out there to go all out and try it again, I was denied December 2018, March 2019 and approved June 2019, 3 interviews in the space of 6months( first 2 in lagos and last one in Abuja) and I got it the 3rd time... I remember the day I was first denied in lagos , I walked from Walter Carrington to Constain and I didn't even know where I was, I travelled same day all night cos I had to be at work the following day, it was a cold sad journey form lagos to Ondo state... I stopped believing in my dreams of studying in the US, i didn't even prepare for the last interview at all,my beards was unshaved, I wore a top that isn't good enough to wear to work on a good day and I honestly prepared myself to get the "am sorry you don't qualify" message from the VO, but nonetheless I prayed and I hoped..

Today it AP changed to Issued, after 45 days of tension, I have checked and checked a thousand times and today God did it. I appreciate everyone on this platform and I think we are really going a good job here, God bless everyone and for all those still on AP. Don't worry, your status will change soon... Off to Minnesota,

Welcome to midwest...congrats!

Hi everyone, my roommate already has his visa to Harvard approved. He however misplaced his I-20 and he is already billed to fly to New York next week and he will need his I-20 at POE. Is it okay to.use a scanned I-20 form or will.he have to wait for it to be sent via Fed-Ex which will take a lot of.time and ultimately affect his travel plan?

Scanned I-20 is not valid at the POE. I would say reschedule the flight if possible or cancel the flight. This may sound unpleasant, but I think I know something that is more unpleasant, returning back to Nigeria because of scanned I-20. Shalom!

V.O: Pass your i20 and passport
V.O : You are going to MSU?
ME : Yes
V.O : How many schools did you apply into?
ME: 5 ( she told me to list them and I did)
V.O : Have you ever travelled out before ?
ME : No
V.O : what were you looking out for while making applications?
She didn’t use those exact words but I thought she asked me indirectly why I chose MSU. I went on and on about why I chose the school cos of my research interest and she was listening until I mentioned the prof I would be working with. She interrupted...
V.O : Are you talking about MSU?
ME : Yes
V.O : I am not asking you about a school in particular. I am asking you the criteria you looked out for in schools while you were making your applications. What were the facilities you looked out for?
( As a sociologist, I couldn’t think of any facility I would be needing. All schools have a form of research activity. We don’t use the lab or any equipment. I honestly didn’t understand what she wanted from me. I mumbled something about funding and research. I can’t remember the words I used exactly but it wasn’t very intelligent) I think I said something about the research carried out in the department.
V.O : funding ? That shouldn’t be a factor. All doctoral students get a funded position. Almost all doctoral students get funding. (She corrected the “All”)

ME: Well, funding was a deciding factor for me. I have friends who got admitted for a Phd but didn’t secure any form of funding. (I don’t know why I had to say that though)
V.O: You are not eligible for this visa bla bla

I walked away feeling like disappointed in myself because I know I could have done better. Applied for another interview the following day and got July 15. Interview was for 9am but I didn’t leave the house till 7am. I got stuck in traffic and I was still there till 10am. I entered with the last set of people to be interviewed around 12.

V.O : Pass your i20 and passport. What school are you going to?
ME: MSU
V.O : why MSU?
ME: I chose MSU because their sociology department is profound in my research interest which is gender inequality & stratification and they are also closely affiliated with the gender studies program of the school. Coincidentally, Prof Kelly Kimberly who I would be working with when I resume doubles as the director of the program. I am convinced this affiliation would help me to benefit from interdisciplinary teaching and research. The department also (VO cuts in)
V.O: How many schools did you apply into?
ME : 5
V.O : what will you do after getting this degree?
ME: I would come back to Nigeria to pick up a lecturing job as my career goal is to become a professor of sociology. I would also like to engage in lots of research work that is geared towards having a radical impact on gender policy in Nigeria.
V.O : your uncle is going to sponsor you?
ME: yes
V.O : what does he do ?
ME : He is the head of sales, public sector for bleep limited
V.O : what do they sell there?
ME : it’s like a micro finance bank where they give out loans.
( my heart was beating fast here because my SOA only had 3.1M and my deficit is Close to 2.8M)
V.O : your on-campus employment is what exactly?
ME : It’s a teaching assistantship.
V.O: I will be issuing your visa now bla bla bla

I kept saying thank you maybe about 5 times nd the guy started laughing. He told me to calm down and keep my i20 safe bla bla bla.

I learnt a lot from this platform and I am really grateful. Thanks to my love TheZed❤️, Soliph ( for her patience and care) and Tjay. Sorry for my long epistle lol

APPRECIATION DIARY

Visa approved this morning
Lagos Consulate
8am
Program: MPH

First of all, Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah) for making this a success. Honestly, my responses were nowhere near perfect. As a matter of fact, it still feels like a dream.

My mentor, Rasulullah (peace and blessings forever be upon him) taught me, "whoever does not appreciate fellow man, will never be able to appreciate God".

My appreciation goes to the following for being a part of my success story:

@Mudicua
Thanks for reviewing my proposed transcript here. Your suggestions worked in no small measure. I really appreciate. Wish you success in your career.

@Shawarma
Queen of queens. This lady and her humorous sense ehn! I hope you remember this line: I wish you all the best and I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. You were the one pursuing me upandan with your transcript grin
Well, you didn't hurt my feelings in any way. I asked for unalloyed review of my transcript, and you gave just that. I really appreciate because your comments made me return to my drawing table. Wish you success in all your endeavors.

Lastly, but not in anyway the least,
@fairheart
This King of Queen Shawarma... Hmm... I don't even know where or how to start appreciating you. Like it's usually said in my local parlance, "tí mo bá ní kí n ṣe àdúrà, epe má jabọ́".
What a down-to-earth man you are! I really appreciate your efforts and words of encouragement. May you continue to soar higher and higher in life. Thank you a trillion times.

Finally, my NL people. Thanks for everything. Your comments, answers to questions, etc have really been helpful. May we all continue to break grounds in our future endeavors!

To those with upcoming interviews, I wish you a seamless experience with positive outcome.

Will drop my transcript once I get my passport.

Cheers!

Congrats

Visa approved 8am yesterday at Lagos embassy

Thank you so much everyone.....this is a great testimony for me....I'm overjoyed

I really appreciate everyone for encouraging and being there for me when i was denied last month at same lagos embassy.

Last month was my first time at the embassy and the VO was the black man, he didn't allow me talk at all, interview was rushed and he denied me.

School is APSU
Masters in Computer science, focus on Predictive analytics.
GTA offer covering tuition and stipends attached.
Deficit of around 7k.

Approved interview went...

VO was a white male in window 3 with firm face...

VO - pass your documents....(staring at computer for minutes)... You were here a week ago..

Me - No. I was here 2 weeks ago

VO - what has changed?

Me - last time i was not very confident to explain my intentions properly but now I am...i was smiling

VO - OK explain yourself

Me - I'm going to Apsu for my masters degree in computer science and quantitative methods, I will be concentrating on predictive analytics... The courses i will be taking are...VO cuts...

VO - why this school
Me - i chose it because of the predictive analytics concentration...the program has extensive courses that combines field studies and research analysis which will help me to be excellent when i return to my job after i finish my studies.. Also i have been able to build a faculty-student relationship with Prof Matt, my potential supervisor... VO kept listening to me and looking at me straight...

VO - what other schools did you apply to

Me - told him in full..

VO - did you get a scholarship

Me - yes. A GTA

VO - how many siblings do you have

Me - two

VO - what do they do

Me - i answered

VO - are you the first child

Me - yes

VO - Who is your sponsor?

Me - my maternal uncle

VO - why will he pay

Me - he supported me during my undergraduate degree...i was smiling

VO - what does he do

Me - he owns a financial consulting firm...

VO - any document to prove his sponsorship

Me - i gave him bank statement.. He checked and returned to me

VO - what will you be doing as a GA

Me - i will be assisting my prof in marking and grading courses and assignment...

VO - why did you choose this school ?

Me - repeated what i said before again

VO - how many children does your sponsor have

Me - 2

VO - how old are they

Me - not very sure but in their 30s

VO - oh they are grown adults ?

Me - yes

VO - he dropped my passport beside him. Your visa is approved...pick up in blah blah and gave me white paper

I didn't hear the rest oo.. I screamed thank you Jesus in the hall as I ran out.. And everyone said congratulations.

Thanks so much Time2win, Sharwama, Fairheart, deyemzy, allylic, Brown2green, Kashogi, yuscodguy, and others. I appreciate big sis Lagosismyhome and imperiouxx, all their old posts i read and i was encouraged.

Never give up. Delay is not permanent. Give it one more push.
You deserve it. Apply to good schools. Don't use agents. Be consistent with your information.
Write GRE, try to get funding at least. The sky is just the starting point. Love y'all.

Congrats.

SHARWAMA'S APPROVED VISA TRANSCRIPT.
Date: June 7, 2019
Venue: Lagos Consulate
Time:6:30 a.m
Gender of VO: Male
Window: I Didn't notice, I was blown away by his cuteness and jerry curl grin grin grin
Ok it was the second to last window, before the exit door.
I: (Smiling) Good morning sir
V.O: Good morning, please pass me your passport and your I-20.
I did and he was like "please push your passport a little bit further". I pushed it and asked, "is it okay now sir?"
VO: Yes it is. Why are you going to the US
I: (deep breath + killer smile) To uhm, pursue a masters degree in Biology, Biomedical Science Concentration at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City Tennessee.
V.O: Why this degree?
I: I really want to work as a research scientist at a renowned biomedical research Institute here in Nigeria. Unfortunately, a masters degree in Biology or a closely related field is the minimum requirement for such a position. So this degree would not just help me hone my research skills or build my critical thinking, it would qualify me for the position I really want, when I return.
V.O: So why did you pick this school?
I: (Gesticulating with magical hands) For me, it wasn't just about the generous funding I received, which I am extremely grateful for by the way, it had a lot more to do with the student-faculty relationship I have built with my potential supervisor, professor Burna boy. We Skyped a couple of times and we have chosen a thesis topic I am super excited about.
V.O: What other schools did you apply to?
I: I applied at Texas A&M University, Commerce
VO: uhum(while typing)
I: Cleveland State University Ohio and Kansas State University Manhattan Kansas.
VO: Have you travelled out of the country before?
I: I have not had the need to sir.
VO: Are you married
I: No sir
V.O: You said you have funding, let me see the evidence
I: My school did not give me an official letter but it's on the I-20(I pointed at the document so he looked at it)
V.O: Ok I see $9590 to be payed by someone ,who is this?
I: That's my mum sir
V.O: What does she do?
I: My mum is a business woman, she sells African fabrics and traditional bridal attires
V.O: Yes do you have any proof, I want to see evidence.
I was confused and he mentioned "or bank statement"
I: (Killer smile)Yes, with all pleasure. Just a moment please.
So I got the bank statement
V.O(while looking at the statement) Doesn't your mum have other children to sponsor in school?
I: (I never expected that question, so my English technically failed me, so I looked at him and answered) All of us have finished school, it remainder two of us.
I was so embarrassed about my grammatical blunder but I was glad he understood the point, we were all done with school except two of my siblings.
V.O: Ok, I will be approving your Visa. He hands me the white paper. Talked about pick up in three working days, gave me back my SOA and I-20, asked me to keep it carefully and I would need the latter at the port of entry... Told me to have a wonderful day
I: (Killer smile) Thank you and have a wonderful rest of the day too.
Yup, I bounced out of the building grin
THE END grin grin grin

Congratulations. Prof Burna boy will be so happy to receive you grin

How is it over there in the mathematics department? Going to ETSU this fall for Msc Mathematics.

It depends on whether your program is tailored towards pure maths or applied maths. The pure maths is really rigorous (heavy on writing mathematical proofs). La cram la pour no dey work here, walahi talahi. If you have to take a proof writing remedial course, dont hesitate at all. It will really help you. But the applied/numerical path is okay! I have taken courses across both paths. I took Real Analysis last semester...it was deeper than what I did in my undergrad. So I advice anyone coming to start to prepare early in order to hit the ground running. Download some calculus textbooks online and drill yourself like mad! Thank me later!

My visa interview was for 6:45 today, I got to the embassy around 6:00 and after everything we moved into the building around 7:10 or so....

Vo: Good morning sir
Me: Good morning, how are you sir? (Didn't answer)
Vo: so why are you going to the US?
Me: to pursue my bachelors degree in digital communication & multimedia
Vo: how many schools did you apply to?
Me: two ( I named them)
Vo: so why did you choose southwest Minnesota over Harrisburg?
Me: southwest Minnesota already admitted me while I'm still on a waiting list for Harrisburg university
Vo: how did you find out about the school and
Why southwest Minnesota state University?
Me: well my high school colleague got admitted there and her name is ...... she told me about the numerous opportunity I would get from the sch and when she told me I begin my research on the school and I found out it was the best for me, smsu don't charge out of state tuition, that means I get to pay the same amount with a Minnesota resident..smsu is also accredited by the North Central association of colleges and it's part of the universities in America with the highest ranking and it's cheap which makes it easier for my mom to fund my education
Vo: okay did you sit for any exam?
Me: Yeah, SAT
Vo: what was your score?
Me: 1150
Vo: what your highest level of education
Me: high school and I'm having my WAEC result here with me
Vo: when did you graduated from High school?
Me : 2013
Vo: 2013?
Me: Yes
Vo: so what have you been doing?
Me: I went into apprenticeship of computer training which lasted for about a year and went into an apprenticeship of cinematography
Vo: okay, who's your sponsor?
Me: my mom
Vo: what does your mom do?
Me: she's a building contractor, she also supplies building materials to private companies and the government
Vo: okay unfortunately you're not eligible for a visa at this time.....

Guys I know I'm not perfect but what do you think happened I don't understand, this is my first attempt tho.....I'm planning on reapplying again

This is my contribution: when talking about why you chose a school, leave out ranking if your school is not among the top 50 (+10 to be generous). SMSU cannot be among the 'best' colleges in the US and still be cheap, no top school is cheap, bro. And being cheap shouldn't be a thing you want to talk about. If cost was a problem for you, then you should not be considering American education in the first place. So just be careful with your choice of words next time. I hope you get more pieces of advice from other folks here. All the BEST!

Please kindly help me with a format. Thank you

There are various templates online. Find one and mimic it. But make sure you don't plagiarise Sha o. It's usually a trap you want to wary of before coming to the US.

Hi guys. So I have a recommender who is too busy at this time and hasn't quite found the time to complete her recommendation. She has suggested that she forwards me the recommendation link so I can fill it on her behalf. Is this a good idea? Are there any repercussions in doing this?

While I believe this will not be a problem, I can only advise that you draft the letter by yourself and plug his name into it nicely as thought he wrote it (you can always get a template to guide you online) and then forward what you wrote to him. He only has to copy and paste into the space and then submit. A friend of mine did the same
