Nemesis4you: As much as I would like Afghanistan under the control of the Afgani governent, this as shown in the Taliban's blitzkrieg is unrealistic. with over $80bn in military aid to the ANA, the Americans have outdone themselves. nobody is going to deploy their troops to occupy Afghanistan forever as history as shown that it's an effort in futility the Taliban would want legitimacy, that would be a useful tool to keep them in check 1 Like |

SuperSixSeven: scenarios are different in the case, the Taliban has shown that they can come to a political compromise, as shown in the negotiations with the United States and with the local government. no one can stop them now can they? everybody has to adjust to the unfolding realities. As a legitimate government the Taliban can be held to account as they cannot live in economic isolation, Afghanistan is a landlocked country, the Pakistanis would not give overt(or significant covert) support to the Taliban, to the detriment of their relationship with the west. 2 Likes |

senior Taliban members, experts and thousands of fighters were released last year as part of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53980978 A decision that has since backfired, as it has helped the Taliban with human capital and expertise. Nobody expected as capitulation this swift of the ANA, the Taliban would be in Kabul by the end of next month. let's only hope the Taliban keeps to their end of the bargain, preventing the use of Afghanistan as a terrorist holiday resort. let's just let the people evolve organically, as HDI improves with political and economic stability, ultra-conservative ideas are bound to soften. Democracy and freedom in the west could be perceived as neo-colonial subjugation to a teenage boy in Kandahar 1 Like 1 Share |

This is definitely not a good time for ISWAP, which is facing an increasing disquiet in Sambisa from remnant JAS fighters. Sources say it suffered an embarrassing defeat on 6 August when it attacked the Bakura Doro and Bakura Sa’alaba-led JAS location on the Lake Chad islands. Relying on its expertise in bomb making,JAS deployed IEDs to destroy most of ISWAP’s vehicles, forcing it to retreat. This is coming on the heels of the massive disengagement of people associated with JAS in Sambisa and ongoing military ops. While the military ramps up its pressure on ISWAP, this should be extended to the Lake Chad islands close to Niger, which is the current JAS’s hideout. This is where air raids are important, given the unfavourable terrain for ground troops. https://twitter.com/Sazedek/status/1424725425020882947?s=19 1 Like |

joscofelix2: The civil defence could compliment the police as they have manpower shortages, they could be our National guard, or at least that was the purpose for which they were intended. We can't go from Civil to military response as we have always done, they could be some kind of buffer before deploying the military in internal security issues. Most curfews are enforced by military personnel, that should not be the case. All that talk about expanding recruitment when we haven't been able to take care of personnel on the ground is ridiculous IMHO. It would just further shrink the size of capital expenditure in favour of recurrent expenditure. Let's give the police the attention that they desperately need 2 Likes |

GeneralFarouq: I believe we all have our biases sha, I would love the NAF to get more platforms, also NA. But let's not neglect those which primary duties are internal policing. Like civil defence who just basically collect salaries, I believe they can do a lot more, if they are the priority of policy makers 1 Like |

GeneralFarouq: Why do you say so, Sir? We could see the state of the airforce under Late AVM Alex Badeh RTD launching "airlines" to what they've been able to become today, due the increase in funding. Wouldn't the police do better if they have more funds? They have the most men(450k) and they are getting a paltry $99m. 1 Like |

GabrielYulaw: The CBN has released ₦64bn out of the ₦100bn to discos for the purchase of 6 million prepaid meters https://dailytrust.com/amp/n64-8bn-cbn-bailout-restores-905mw-electricity Now, that shouldn't even happen at all, as PHCN was sold to private entities, as a business they should invest a part of the profits they make on the business, but that can't happen because of subsidies. every year they run at a loss, after this exercise which should last for about 2 years FG's directive is that they shouldn't bill you if you haven't had a prepaid meter installed on your premise. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/396838-just-in-nerc-sets-date-for-no-electricity-meter-no-disconnection-policy.html 1 Like |

lebuhsi: we do have chronic tax linkage, especially on the sub-national levels. look at state budgets and you'll weep, some states have 90% of their budgets dedicated to recurrent expenditure, with over 70% of projected revenue expected from FAAC allocations, they basically just pay salaries. Growth & development comes from sub-national levels. It's not really about autonomy, it's fiscal independence, only 1 state has that. Lagos charts it's own policies on healthcare, infrastructure etc. Lagos even operates and funds it's own police force without any hiccups. There's a clamour for state policing, how many states can fund a police service? primary health care is the state government's jurisdiction, for instance, FG has to take over that responsibility because most states can't meet their obligations. 2 Likes |

GabrielYulaw: would our Socialist labour unions allow us to cut the civil service? last year, Buhari's regime wanted to inplemement the Oransanye report, what did the NLC and others do? we remove subsidies for a bit when oil prices went down when it started climbing and the price of petrol increased by default, didn't the labour unions threaten fire and brimstone? Nigerians are not ready to enjoy the dividends of democracy because we don't know what we want. look Electricity is, for instance, Gencos can generate 5,000MW of power how much power can Discos distribute? For years they have been relying solely on FG bailouts when they need liquidity because Nigerians are not paying what they are supposed to pay for the power they consume. Discos need to pay Transco, and Transco needs to pay Gencos, when the supply of money is not coming because bailouts come late, what do you think would happen across the Value-chain? When FG wanted to raise tariff rates a bit so Discos can have the liquidity to upgrade their networks, buy spares etc and improve their service delivery, what did the labour unions say? we can't have it both ways, electricity, petrol are services, if you want these services rendered, you have to pay for them 6 Likes |

GabrielYulaw: Nigerians don't need to pay more taxes in my opinion, what the FIRS and other revenue collecting agencies need to do is broaden the tax net. Nigeria has a tax to GPD ratio of 6.3%, which's a travesty for a country our size. look at our peers for instance say S.africa which stands at 30%, Ghana at 14% etc Nigeria has a revenue problem, not a debt problem. If we can get even 20% as tax to GPD, it would greatly improve capital spend without the risk of expanding our debt and debt servicing obligations. The State constitutes a big chunk of capital spending, but over the years recurrent expenditure has trumped capital expenditure due to low revenue collection and quite frankly stupidity, with the infrastructural deficit we have, we should not be spending ₦1trn every year paying subsidies that are only for PMS alone, the figures for electricity is outrageous. some years we spend 70% of our budget on recurrent items. Ghana with a lower GPD per capita than us operates a fully deregulated downstream sector, why the hell can't we? We should pay more taxes, we should stop shouting "democracy" while at the same time clamour for a pseudo-socialist state. 4 Likes 1 Share |

BREAKING: ISWAP/JAS REAPPOINTS NEW LEADER The new jihadist coalition formed between the the so-called Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP ) and old members of Boko Haram JAS faction has a new leader. Sources confirmed that Amir Abbah Gana aka Ba-Lawan was reappointed by ISIS core to lead the coalition that emerged from rival JAS fighters who recently pledged allegiance to ISIS Core under the leadership of Abu Ibrahim Al-Qurashi. New commanders selected from both factions were also appointed days after the Nigerian army launched successful operations against the jihadist sect in Northern Nigeria. The new appointments were spearheaded by the Interim Council of the ISWAP-Boko Haram terrorists’ group, headed by one Abu Mus’ab Al-Barnawi. Sources say the loss of key commanders from military air strikes precipitated the jihadist group to quickly réorganise it’s leadership structure which has been under suspension for months. ISWAP restructuring is reported to be in line with a recent directive from ISIS Headquarters in Iraq.
