What is Russia's war aim?

Putin made it clear in his invasion address that he's invading to de-Nazify and demilitarize Ukraine, and that's what he's been doing so far.

Russia has decimated Ukraine's military, especially the Ukranian Navy (which has lost all its ships, ports, and complete access to the Black Sea, which is the only water it has access to) and the Ukranian Air Force (which doesn't have a single airplane or air defense system in operation anymore).

And, Russia is currently de-Nazifying Ukraine by attacking the Azov battalion in Mariupol. (The Azov batallion is a neo-Nazi, anti-Jew, anti-Arab, anti-black, anti-anyone-who-is-not-pure-white group that was under sanctions from the US before they and US become conditional friends because of the conflict).

Russia would be done with his objectives by the time he's done with the Azov batallion in Mariupol, but I'd really love it if they whip Zelensky's ass as a bonus.

On the side:

Russia has also captured every city in Southern Ukraine with the exception of Mariupol, which is completely surrounded and under attack. Mariupol is the major industrial powerhouse in southern Ukraine and the headquarters of the neo-Nazi Azov battalion.

Russia has also gained more ground in Luhansk and Donetsk, even though it didn't officially plan to at the beginning of the war. (It said Russian soldiers would support the fighters there but didn't say it was going to take more land).

Russia has also captured at least three nuclear power plants from Ukraine including two that are the largest in Europe.

War is not good. It's the expectation of the world that there is a deescalation. Thus this move by Russia should not be seen as a sign of failure to achieve set targets but the early steps of acceding to the voice of reason. Thank God for the Pope's spiritual support towards Russia and Ukraine. Normalcy will return.
