With the recent release of Man of God, and as the streaming service continues to flesh out its plan to dominate the Nigeria filmosphere and, by extension, the continent, too, now’s a good time to revisit all the Netflix Originals to come out of Nollywood since Netflix arrived in 2016.

In 2018, Netflix commissioned its first Nigerian Original when it purchased the worldwide rights to the Genevieve Nnaji movie Lionheart. Since then, the streaming service has gone on to release more movies from some of the choicest filmmakers in the country.

Rap music (interchangeably used with hip hop in this editorial) and rappers recently made the headlines in Nigeria, with several rappers deploring how the genre is being marginalised, and rappers met with disdain by industry show promoters.

But while there are certain truths in their assertions, have they done enough to demand or earn a place at the same table as their Afrobeats counterparts?

Simple answer, NO!

Burna Boy’s 2021 Grammy success elevated Afrobeats to an all new high, and beyond reasonable doubt, cemented Nigeria’s status the headquarters of the genre, which now arguably has the fastest growing global appeal of all musical genres.

Selling out historic arenas, performing at music’s biggest festivals, being sort after for features by international acts, topping foreign charts– the testaments are too numerous to mention– the remarkable growth and success that Afrobeats has enjoyed in the past decade.

However, although it appears simple now, it’s the fruit from 60 plus years of hard labour, solid groundwork laid by pioneers like the legendary Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, Oliver De Coque, Osita Osadebe, Ebeneezer Obe, to name but a few, as Afrobeats is typically a blend of different sounds across Africa and environs.

Why then do Nigerian rappers complain, when rap is a relatively new genre in dire need of pioneers who will influence pop culture as much as Fela and his cohorts did, people who will not cave or switch lanes when the going gets tough?

Rap occupies a certain grey area between poetry, prose and spoken words. It’s also more than just music, its a lifestyle requiring it’s roots to be planted in every scintilla of popular popular culture.

It’s not that Nigerians don’t like rap music or hip hop, it’s that rappers have not found a sustainable solution to making the music appeal to them.

The people will love rap music as long as they find it relevant and relatable.
Nigerians warmed to South African rappers, Casper Nyovest, AKA, Nasty C, even Proverb when they broke into the Nigerian market. It might be lazy evidence, but there is truth in it when you also consider that MI, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Vector, Da Grin, Phyno, Olamide rose to prominence as rappers, not as singers.

If Nigerian rappers want to get the same level of recognition as their Afrobeats counterparts, then a lot has to change, starting from their perception of what the people like, how much quality and effort and they commit into their craft and how to tackle the global stereotype that basically classifies everything straight out of Africa as Afrobeats.

So rather than blame the audience and promoters, rappers need to go back to the drawing board and ask themselves: “What happened?” “Where did our early shine go?” What happened to our consistency?”

After all a core part of the MCship or Emceeship is self-application. The craft is deeper than every other musical genre, and there’s a reason rappers are perceived as poets, often valuated as gifted people and geniuses.

It’s not a game for the chicken-hearted. Take drug dealing culture for instance, or gangsterism, which has drawn millions of references in hip hop, not because all rappers are criminals, or that rappers had to get their hands dirty to do rap.

Rather, it’s a metaphorical explanation how determined and ready you have to be to be successful in the game. Why do you think rappers do battle?

America is regarded as the home of rap and hip hop, but ancestrally, west African griots began such performances. Safe to say it’s not a surprise why rap is a Black people’s art.

The rap and hip hop evolution thickened with the MC era, starting from the 70s and culminating in the 90s. The genre saw its greatest transformation and invention from the 80s to the mid 90s, with modern rap pioneering artists like Rakim, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, MF Doom, Run-DMC, and co.

Rap/hip hop is not an overnight success in America. Rappers didn’t switch lanes, they had a point to prove, and not even commercial frustrations or police brutality could stop them and the genre from growing.

Rap is not music for the chicken-hearted. It’s a craft only the most determined musicians will succeed at, because you often have to be the mouthpiece of the people.
It’s admirable to be versatile, Canadian singer and rapper Drake is a typical example, but Drake has sold as much rap records as he has his occasional RNB-style music. And America is an entirely different market, with different demographics, but above all, rappers have done and continue to do their assignments, with the likes of Andre 3000, Jay Z, Kanye West, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar boasting numerous Grammy awards.

Talking about rap and music’s most prized award- the Grammys- it wasn’t until the 1989th edition, after more than 2 decades that rap music was recognised fully by the Recording Academy. Again suggesting that just like in Nigeria now, there was a time rap was in the backseat in America.

The future can be bright, but a lot of work needs to be done. With social media and globalisation, expect the rewards to come sooner rather than later. But the gap grows wider everyday as more rappers chase the easy path to wealth by plugging into the earned success of Afrobeats.
Making quality rap albums, songs etc is great. Making quality rap music for the people is greater, but adapting that style to the culture and the way of the people is greatest for the rap industry in Nigeria.

Also, rappers need to organise and engage in more non-commercial rap related pursuits and projects for the growth of the culture. Examples include free shows, talent hunts, free tours, lectures and more, just to be able to influence poplar culture enough to the point that the audience perceive them as relevant.

There are barely rap-focused labels in Nigeria, including groups. Rap groups are crucial to the popularisation of the genre. The most memorable one Nigeria has had were the Chocolate City Boys- MI, Jesse Jagz, and Ice prince, not particularly a group, but they did make a collaborative project and the people loved them at that time. The culture needs more.

Talent production also has to be paid sufficient attention. Because that’s the only way to transfer and maintain knowledge and legacy. For example, MI may have enjoyed a relatively successful career as a rapper, but didn’t quite manage to nurture or produce a progeny.

So when rappers want to ask why the people don’t value their craft, they must understand that in this creative business, people mostly value what they can relate to.

And until they begin to work really hard for the genre and for the culture without merely thinking about their pockets, they will continue to be knocked to the passenger seats as far as music in Nigeria is concerned.

Nigerian Afropop and RNB sensation Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems is the latest Nigerian musician to model for a global sports and foot wear brand Reebok.

You cannot separate music from style and fashion, and Afrobeats is living up to that.

As part of the British company’s launch campaign for their new classic leather shoe line, Tems had earlier appeared in a short film alongside other supper stars including NBA legend legend Allen Iverson, Venezuelan singer-songwriter Arca Colombian Singer/songwriter Brent Faiyaz, London based Rapper, songwriter Ghetts French singer-songwriter and producer Lolo Zouaï.

The short film was titled “Life Is Not A Spectator Sport.”

In a short video shared by Reebok on Instagram, Tems dons styled Reebok branded fitness wear, and completes it out with an off-white classic leather sneaker while her neck is adorned by a thick silver necklace with multi pendent.

She flips her signature long braids from side to side as though she’s performing, with the camera fleeting and changing angles.

The caption on the post read: “Tems moves by the air of her lungs, letting her divine nature lead her on her journey. Her soothing chords create a spiritual essence. Her words call to freedom. She is not bound by the conditions of what it means to live. She tells stories of her thoughts and experiences. because what is life if people can’t see you.”

Directed by Dare Olaitan and produced by Kayode Kasun, Ile Owo (House Of Money) looks like it’ll be one of the most ambitious movies to arrive in Nollywood this year.

Here’s what the film’s official synopsis says:

Busola has forever been unlucky with love. Pressure by society and her parent to tie the knot as a means to lift her family out of poverty she finally meets Tunji – the perfect man.

At first, Busola struggles to understand why a billionaire would choose to marry her but after she accepts his proposal of marriage, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead her to a truth she could never have imagined.

Some of the stars appearing in this movie include Bisola Aiyeola, Efa Iwara, Tina Mba, Sophie Alakija, Kie Kie, Akin Lewis, Temisan Emmanuel, and Immaculata Oko Kasum.

Ile Owo (House Of Money) will arrive at cinemas around the country on June 24, 2022.

Wildflower follows the story of three women’s tragic tales of domestic violence spurred by the courage of one woman.

With this movie, director Biodun Stephen hopes to, once again, bring to the forefront of viewers’ minds the ills of gender-based violence.

The movie stars Damilare Kuku (author of All The Men in Lagos Are Mad) as the protagonist, with Deyemi Okanlawon, Toyin Abraham, Sandra Okunzuwa, Zubby Micheal, Etinosa Idemudia, Nosa Rex, Imoh Eboh, Kiki Omeili, Eso Dike, Angel Unigwe, Rachel Emem Isaac, and others rounding off the cast.

Wildflower is produced by Vincent Okonkwo and will debut in cinemas throughout the country on May 27, 2022.

This report is coming on the heels of a recent one at the tail-end of March 2022, where Ezra Millar was said to have been arrested for disorderly conduct and harassment. The details of that incident revealed that the actor was yelling obscenities and getting agitated with visitors singing karaoke, among other violent acts at the scene of the incident.

Once again, Millar is said to be on the Hawaii police radar again. In a new report from Hawaii News Now, Miller was arrested by police on Hawaii Island on Tuesday morning. Another TV station corroborated the story. It is reported that Miller was arrested due to a complaint of second-degree assault.

The Hawaii Police Department confirmed the report, including details on Miller’s arrest. At 1 a.m., Miller had caused tension after being asked to leave a get-together at a private residence in Lower Puna. It led to the actor throwing a chair that led to a 26-year-old woman getting hurt on the forehead, leaving an approximate half-inch cut.

Ezra Millar was released from police custody pending further investigation; however, the Hawaii Police has stressed that this is still an active case at this moment.

Amidst his recent troubles, Ezra Millar actor reprised his role of Credence Barebone in the recently released Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Burna Boy has been confirmed as part of the lineup of performers for the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. He will become the first Nigerian to manage the feat, preceded by his success at the 2021 Grammys, where he won the Best Global Album courtesy of his fifth studio project Twice As Tall.

The 2022 Billboard Music Awards are less than a month away, and on April 19, broadcast partners, NBC revealed the first round of performers fans can expect to see at the event.

American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Latto, Burna Boy and Rauw Alejandro are all slated to take the stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 19, when the ceremony goes down.

Both Latto and Megan are finalists for top female rap artist, alongside Cardi B. Meanwhile Burna Boy’s countryman Wizkid is nominated in the best pop record category.

Nigeria’s first feature-length animated movie, Ladybuckit & the Motley Mopsters, is now streaming on Netflix!

Lady Buckit & The Motley Mopsters (LBMM) is Nigeria’s multiple award-winning 3D Animated/Edutainment cartoon that tells the tale of the discovery of oil in Bayelsa State.

The story follows a precocious, self-absorbed 8-year-old girl Bukky, who finds herself in wildly unfamiliar territory in pre-colonial Oloibiri, the South-South Nigeria town where crude oil was first discovered in commercial quantities in the 1950s. There, she encounters a band of highly unusual characters who change the course of her destiny.

The film stars Bimbo Akintola, Patrick Doyle, Bola Edwards, and Kalu Ikeagwu in the lead roles.

The Chris Ihidero produced animated film first premiered in cinemas in December 2020 and is now finally available to a worldwide audience on Netflix.

Nigerian music executive and talent manager, Ubi Franklin has recounted how his friend’s young daughter was raped, recorded and the video shared on Instagram.

Franklin made this known via his Twitter page on Sunday, April 17, revealing how the said school concealed the information.

“Just got off the phone with a friend of mine His 10-year-old daughter was selected to represent her school at the World School Games in Dubai. His daughter was r**ped by fellow students, video tapped and posted on Instagram and the school concealed it for a month,” he tweeted.

While updating the tweets, the music exec revealed that the school has since suspended the child.

“This school took the girl from her parents that they wanted to conduct a Covid test and the school rather took the girl for a pregnancy test. As we speak the girl has been SUSPENDED from the school. Some things don’t make sense at all,” he tweeted.

There’s incoming music from DJ Spinall and Asake, and according to a preview of the song, it’s a potential banger.
Popular Nigerian DJ and record producer, Spinall shared a video clip of him and YBNL Records’s boss Olamide vibing to an unreleased record on April 17.

According to the post’s caption, Spinall and YBNL Records fast rising rapper and singer Asake are the masterminds behind the song, which is titled “Palazzo.”

Pallazo is an Italian term, referring to a palace-like building. It has also been used as slang for free flowing pants.

In the shared one minute plus long video, Olamide sings the lyrics as though he’s the original performer of the song, while Spinall and three other men in the background vibe and dance along.

Asake continues to ride the wave of his successful self titled EP, with hit records “Omo Ope” and “Sungba” especially spearheading his rise to prominence.

With “Palazzo” he will be hoping to add another hit to his discography.

Few hours after Nigerian rapper YCee deplored the lack of inclusion of recognised rappers on the line-up of performers for American rapper Rick Ross’ concert in Nigeria, fellow rapper MI Abaga weighed in with his own opinions.

Rick Ross is on a promotional tour of Africa for Brett Berish manufactured brand of sparkling wines Luc Belaire, and is expected to perform in both Lagos before departing for Angola and returning to Abuja for a concert on the 18th of April.

According to several tweets posted by MI on April 15, rappers would have been better off if they listened to him. MI is regarded as one of Nigeria and Africa’s finest rappers, rising to prominence in 2006 with the release of his hit single “Crowd Mentality.”

His discography includes 4 mixtapes, 4 studio albums, 2 EPs and 1 compilation album. As far as rap music goes in Nigeria, MI is the industry’s very own Jay Z, except that rap music is not as lucrative as it is there over here.

According to the Chocolate City label chairman, he was given a chance to meet with Rick Ross, but refused to go ahead with the arrangement after he requested a solo rendezvous with the MMG boss and was turned down.

This is coming a few hours after Mella accused JJC of physical assaulting their son, Benito inflicting grievous bodily harm.

It would be recalled that a few days ago, she exposed the faces of JJC and Akindele’s kids on social media, years after they were born.

Burna Boy lit up the famous Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands on April 12, treating fans to enthralling performances and cameos from guest musicians.

The one-time Grammy winner has been touted as one of Nigeria and Africa’s best live performer alongside his band “The Outsiders.”

Kenyan Afropop band Sauti Sol made made a cameo on the night, in an event which saw the Ahoy sell out, with more than 16,000 people in attendance.

Netflix has released the first full trailer for the eagerly anticipated return of their hit TV series Stranger Things.

Just like some other mega-hits for the streaming service, the upcoming 4th season of Stranger Things will be divided into two volumes: vol. 1 will debut on May 27, while vol. 2 on July 1.

When Stranger Things kicked off in July 2016, it started off as a simple story about a kidnap; it was only a matter of time before viewers got sucked into the fantastical world behind the veil of Hawkins, Indiana, and the world hasn’t been the same since then.

Judging from the trailer, it looks like we’ll be spending a lot of time in the Upside Down, which signals to be a good thing. The show’s mythology needs to expand some more.

The fourth season of Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Maya Hawke.

TV giant HBO will release the full official score for the recently concluded season 2 of their fan favourite TV series “Euphoria.”

According to an announcement on the show’s social media pages, the project is championed and produced by British singer and record producer Labrinth, with several guest appearances by the show’s major protagonist Zendaya.

Zendaya portrays Rue Bennett, a 17-year-old, high-school student with drug addictions, who struggles to find her place in the world.

Fans praised the show’s cutting plot, cinematography, and performance from the cast. Alongside Zendaya, “Euphoria” stars Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Agnus Cloud and more.

Fans of the MCU’s Loki have more to expect from the actor as star Tom Hiddleston is set to star in a TV adaptation of David Grann’s book, The White Darkness. Hiddleston will also serve as Executive Producer.

The plot of The White Darkness is inspired by the true-life account of Henry Worsley, a devoted husband and father, a former soldier, a man of deep honor and sacrifice, but also a man deeply obsessed with adventure, manifesting in an epic journey crossing Antarctica on foot. Tom Hiddleston will play Worsley.

The White Darkness will be produced for Apple TV+ by Apple Studios and UCP. The Limited is expected to premiere globally and join other ranks of hit shows on the streaming service like Defending Jacob, The Morning Show, See, and many others.

No release date has been announced for the project yet.

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has revealed she would not celebrating any man until they walk down the isle.

The movie star who is currently in a relationship disclosed this on an episode of Showmax’ latest reality Tv show, ”Real Housewives on Lagos”.

According to the mother of two, she is not ready to make her man’s identity public much until they are married.

““I have someone in my life. We have been together for a while. He does not like social media. He is a very private person. I don’t think I want to celebrate anybody until I am getting married again. A fine girl like me must have a man,” she said.

How close are we to Davido’s next studio album? There’s enough talk on social media to suggest that we’re not far off.

The DMW boss’ next studio album would be his fourth, after 2012’s “Omo Baba Olowo,” 2020’s “A Good Time,” and 2021’s “A Better Time.”

In fact, Davido could complete a titular trilogy after following up his “A Good Time” with a sequel naming in “A Better Time,” his 2nd and 3rd studio albums respectively.

If indeed that happens then his next album may well be provisionally titled “A Best Time” or “The Best Time,” and we’re certain that work is currently being put into the project, as hinted in the tweet below.

On April 8, popular producer and singer Pheelz also teased many unreleased collaborations with Davido, writing on Twitter: “Nahh @davido and I have got bangers for dayssss. These songs are pure flames.”

Tekno, who broke into mainstream music with that unforgettable hit single in 2014 “Holiday,” where he featured Davido, in a recent tweet also warned the 29-year-old “Haaya Haaya” singer to make sure he (Tekno) appears in the final cut of the album.

All of this suggest that we’re indeed close to Davido’s next studio album, which will be his fourth overall, and 3rd in the space of 3 years. And in the coming days, headline singles from the Nigerian superstar will likely start releasing.

Diamond first showed off her baby bump in a series of stunning photos in Hawaii in September last year. And up until the singer’s announcement, Diamond had not revealed the identity of the baby’s father.

Opeyemi Falegun, estranged husband of Nollywood actress, Nkechi Blessing has revealed the reason for their marriage crash.

The Ekiti state politician recounted his experience with the actress in a series of videos sent to Actor, Uche Maduagwu.

According to him, Blessing only came into his life because of money and sex. He averred that she took advantage philanthropism, as she was aware of his foundation that caters for widows and the less privileged.

“She came into my life for two things, money and sex. You know I have a foundation that takes care of widows and less privileged that I started when I lost my father. That was part of the reasons she came into my life. She knew I was a philanthropist, she knew I do give to a lot of people within my capacity,” he said.

Falegun added that the movie star almost drained him with her incessant request for money.

He also disclosed that Blessing wanted a child by all means, while they were only dating. According to him, he insisted that they got married first before proceeding to have children.

The estranged couple have been subject to several social media reactions since the politician revealed that their marriage was over earlier in the week.

The actress had also accused him of using her popularity for selfish reasons.

Nollywood actor, Stan Nze and actress, Blessing Obasi have for the first time shared their proposal video and its super adorable!

The couple who got married in a simple ceremony on September 11, 2021 shared the emotional video on their Youtube channel.

Revealing details on how the proposal was planned, Nze stated that he had planned to take Obasi on a trip abroad and propose there. However, she had a movie to shoot during that period so she cancelled the trip.

To make up for the disappointment, Obasi disclosed she planned series of surprises for Nze’s birthday instead, which was on May 15, three days after hers, which had passed.

She organized a praise night on his birthday eve, with their close friends in attendance, checked him into a luxurious hostel and had the room decorated with flowers and candles.

She also treated him to an English breakfast tray served in their room while she awaited the evening to surprise him with an all-white dinner with their close friends present.

Unbeknownst to her, Nze was aware of the surprise and was also planning to surprise her with a proposal, at his surprise party.

The couple shed happy tears as their close friends cheered them on.
