It’s been over 24 hours since Wizkid won the Best Collaboration at the 2022 BET Awards, and while there’s been noticeable activity on the prolific singer’s social media, he is yet to publicly acknowledge the honour.

It was the remix of his smashing hit “Essence” featuring Canadian Pop singer Justin Bieber, and Tems who was, of course, on the original song that earned Wiz the award. His fourth BET statuette in about two decades.

Tems attended the award show, and was on hand to retrieve the award on behalf of Wizkid as she also won the solo category of the Best International Act on the night. However, from her reaction when “Essence” (Remix) was announced as the winner, it didn’t seem like there was any communication prior between her and her collaborator, as she seemed rather compelled by Wizkid’s absence to go and collect the award which she dedicated to Nigeria and Africa in her acceptance speech.

The ceremony may have gone down as Afrobeats’ biggest night and triumph at the BET Awards, given the wins and debut performances by Nigerian artists Fireboy DML and Pheelz, but it also has brought focus back to Wizkid’s long-standing feud with the BET.

For the record, Wiz has long voiced his dissatisfaction with the organisers of the award, beginning with his first triumph in 2012, when he shared his award with Sarkodie. The singer disapproved of African acts being announced and presented their own awards backstage, before the main-show. Yemi Alade, Fuse ODG and several other top African acts would also join in criticising the BET Awards for that act.

However, that changed in 2017, when Davido collected the award for the Best International Act during the main show. It has remained that way since then. But Wiz has refused to participate in the full rituals of the ceremony including red carpets and interviews, maintaining that he felicitates with the BET but only as a spectator despite winning in 2020 and being nominated in 2021.

Excusably, Wiz has had a Dior event to attend in Paris over the weekend, and a concert in the Netherlands, but why it suddenly feels like the BET Awards is now completely nonexistent to him this year, refusing to repost any of their posts or related posts on social media remains a mystery we’d still be hoping to solve in time to come.

CEO and boss of Play Network Studios, Charles Okpaleke (aka Charles of Play) has taken to his social media handle to air his mind to all those dragging his latest movie project Glamour Girls.

Glamour Girls is a movie about independent single women embarking on their own paths within Nigeria’s traditionally patriarchal society, and it’s the latest Nollywood original to debut on Netflix. Since its June 23 premiere, Glamour Girls has seen itself pulled in polarizing directions by members of the viewing public, with the loudest consensus being that the movie had no plot and purpose. The Play boss himself isn’t taking this sort of criticism likely and has aired his opinion concerning the matter.

Two standout paragraphs in the scathing release, characteristic of the average Nigerian film-boss, reads:

“Shoutout to all Nollywood filmmakers constantly going through the nightmare of making movies in Nigeria. You guys are a blessing and an inspiration,” an excerpt of the statement reads.

“A huge shoutout to the other self-proclaimed Nollywood filmmakers and critics, who have produced numerous movies in the heads, won awards with them, and even climbed the stage to make speeches, but are yet to produce any in reality. We see you, we are rooting for you! A win for one is a win for all.”

This is nothing we haven’t seen before. Remember in January after the release of Chief Daddy 2: Going For Broke, when EbonyLife boss Mo Abudu took to her social media page to chide Nigerians (like children) for daring to air their views about her movie, which also was a Netflix Original (see the connection?)?


There definitely is a pattern and it goes beyond the Netflix Original connection. We know it isn’t easy to make a movie, especially in a clime like ours here in Nigeria, but Nollywood filmmakers (generalizing now) need to learn to better receive and process criticism for it is the only way to know for sure where one has erred and how to improve for future releases. Throwing shades for the sake of sounding savage and unbothered does you and your craft very little good. The customer is king, especially when the customer is right. My opinion is, care less about how the criticism is offered and just take the lesson; your future self will thank you for implementing it.

Hollywood has been thrown into mourning once again as Mary Mara, star of hit shows like ER and Ray Donovan dies in an apparent drowning accident in a river in New York City.

The New York State Police responded to a call at 08:10 local time on Saturday, with the caller reporting a “possible drowning”.

Mara’s manager, Craig Dorfman, confirmed her death in a statement, where he referred to her as one of the finest actresses he has ever encountered.

“Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met,” Dorfman stated.

“I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in ‘Mad Forest’ off Broadway. She was electric, funny, and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed.”

It is reported that the police have cleared Mary Mara’s death of foul play after discovering her body in the St. Lawrence River.

“On June 26, 2022, at 08:10, State Police responded to 33753 Old Farm Road in the town of Cape Vincent, Jefferson County for a reported possible drowning,” a police statement started.

“When Troopers, along with Cape Vicent Fire and Ambulance arrived on the scene, they discovered a female deceased in the St. Lawrence River.

“The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Mary T. Mara from Cape Vincent, NY.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming.

“The victim’s body showed no signs of foul play and was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy to determine an official cause of death. The investigation is continuing.”

Fans worldwide have trooped to social media to wish the star farewell.

May Mary Mara’s soul rest in peace.

Setting the ball rolling was the show’s host, Taraji P Henson who hit the red carpet dressed in a silver shiny dress by Tomford.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick joins the prestigious $1 billion club at the box office.

It’s only the second movie to do so since 2019, after Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.

I figured this sequel would be a success, especially since its predecessor, Top Gun, remains well loved 36 years after its initial release, but never would I have guess it’d make it across the $1B mark.

Congratulations are in order for Tom Cruise; with a career spanming three decades now, this is his first movie to make it this big at the box office.

Top Gun: Maverick follows the titular Maverick after more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviator. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.

Omah Lay has pushed back the release his debut studio album “Boy Alone” to July 15. The 14-track project which was supposed to premiere on June 24, but will now release next month after suffering some license and rights delays. The singer had earlier suggested this in a tweet he posted a couple of weeks ago.


Already, two singles have been released off the album including “Attention” featuring Justin Bieber and the recently released “Woman.”


The full project is now expected to make its debut on July 14 and is available for pre-sale.

Meanwhile Omah Lay will go on a world tour about two months after his album debut, Beginning with North America including USA and Canada. The “Boy Alone Tour” will officially kick off with a concert in Silver Spring Maryland on the 7th of September. Tickets are now available for purchase.

Teni released two new singles on Friday, June 24. The two songs are titled “Little” and “Legendary.”

While “Little” was produced by Abayomi Ilerioluwa, “Legendary” see Teni link up with producer Onome Ojeboh. Both songs are about 2 minutes and 30 seconds long and are Teni’s first official releases of the year.

In a tweet where she announced the two songs, she also confirmed that her second studio album is on the way, although the title is still under wraps.

Amazon Prime Video continues to build up momentum in the time leading up to its official launch here in Nigeria. The latest deal to make the news from all the groundwork being laid is one where the mega streaming service has signed a three-picture deal with Nollywood’s Nemsia Studios, the studio responsible for recent Nollywood hits like God Calling, Before 30, and Journey Of An African Colony.

This deal will see Nemsia Studios soon release its first feature film with Prime Video titled Breath of God, which is described as an inspirational story about life and destiny. Breath of God is written and directed by Nemsia Studios’ co-founder BB Sasore and produced by Eku Edewor.

Speaking about the deal, Ayanna Lonian, director of Content Acquisition and head of Worldwide Major Studio Licensing Strategy, Prime Video, had this to say:

“This slate deal supports our goal to showcase Nollywood at its best, by telling authentic homegrown stories in a range of genres to Prime Video customers around the world.”

Co-founder Derin Adeyokunnu had this to say:

“At Nemsia Studios, it is our belief in ‘no gravity for the mind’ that has led us to work with Prime Video, one of the leading streaming services worldwide, capable of delivering our stories further than we ever imagined.

“We are tremendously excited about the collaboration and what the future holds for Nollywood.”

This is Amazon Prime Video’s second exclusive licensing deal in the country following a previous, ongoing deal with Inkblot Studios and Anthill Studios.

Beyonce has released the first single “Break My Soul” off her upcoming 7th solo album titled Renaissance. Bey had teased the roll out a day before it’s release, updating her Instagram bio to reference the song.

Break My Soul is the 6th track on Renaissance, and the 16-track project is scheduled to make its full debut on the 29th of July.

Beyonce has revealed that her new single, “Break My Soul,” will be released on Tuesday, June 21. The song will be the first single off her upcoming album, Renaissance, and the first music she’s released as a solo artist since 2016’s Lemonade, with the exception of The Lion King soundtrack and Jay-collaboration Z’s album, Everything Is Love.

Beyoncé announced on her Instagram page, updating her bio to read, “6. BREAK MY SOUL midnight ET.” The number six is most likely a reference to the song’s position on the tracklist of her upcoming album Renaissance. See the announcement in the IG post below.


While Beyonce has kept the details of her new album under wraps, she recently performed it for British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful in honor of the publication’s new cover story.

When Enninful heard the unpublished songs, he commented, “Soaring vocals and fierce beats combine and in a split second I’m transported back to the clubs of my youth.” He continued, “I want to get up and start throwing moves. It’s music I love to my core. Music that makes you rise, that turns your mind to cultures and subcultures, to our people past and present, music that will unite so many on the dance floor, music that touches your soul.”

Renaissance is scheduled to be make its full debut on July 29 as we reported earlier. For now, prepare for the sixth track, “BREAK MY SOUL,” in a couple of hours.

The Shine Ya Eye season for everything it was has finally come to an end.

For the reunion finale, the show’s host gave the viewers a glimpse of exciting highlights from the show.

One of the most “assumed” solid romance of the season was that of EmmaRose which unexpectedly broke off months after the season.

A clip from the finale showed where Emmanuel stated he never asked Liquorose to be his girlfriend. According to him, their relationship was never defined and had no title to it.

However, all of his claims were firmly disapproved by the dancer who insisted they were indeed dating.


Another revelation of the night was Beatrice opening up on having a long time crush on Pere, who she felt did not make the required effort to pursue her while in the house.

On a lighter note, the finale saw a number of conflicting housemates squash their differences including Boma and Queen to Pere and Arin to Cross and Saskay.


Details of the seventh season is expected to be released in usual fashion in the coming weeks.

Judy Austin Moghalu, second wife to Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie has officially taken his surname.

The actress revealed she had taken his last name in a post shared via her Instagram page on Friday, June 17, 2022.

“Her Excellency Judy Austin Yul-Edochie. Thanking God for his numerous blessings. Have a beautiful day bunnies.” she captioned.

It would be recalled that in April 2022, the actor unveiled his new wife and son on social media.

The news was greeted with severe backlash from fans and his first wife, May who also called him out.

Chris Brown and Wizkid dropped a new single titled “Call Me Everyday” on Friday, June 17. The highly anticipated single drops after multiple online leaks from both superstars.

Announcing the release of the single, Brown took to social media, writing “Out NOW ( NEW MUSIC ALERT) #breezyseason@wizkidayo@chrisbrownofficial “CALL ME EVERYDAY” link in bio.”

“Call Me Everyday” is one of two official singles, the other being “Wheels Fall Off,” that the American pop star has released off his upcoming 10th solo album “Breezy.”

Breezy will release across streaming platforms from Friday, June 24, and is expected to have about 23 tracks.

Behind the Siege (circa 2004)

Behind the Siege was intended to be a vehicle to drive conversations around HIV/AIDS among the Nigerian populace, but I don’t think the showrunner(s) saw coming how well-received and entertaining it’d be. One reason for the high entertainment value was Tina Mba’s fierce portrayal of one of the philandering king’s many wives. Hers was a loud-mouthed, entertaining showdown that has stayed ingrained in my memory for a long, long time.

Unfortunately, I can barely find much about Behind the Siege online in terms of photos and/or video clips. It’d be great if either NTA or Tade Ogidan of OGD Productions, who helmed the show on behalf of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and from Family Health International (FHI), could share throwback clips to the phenomenal show.

Isoken (2017)

In Isoken, Tina Mba plays the role of an overbearing mother who continuously tries to matchmake her unmarried daughter, Isoken (Dakore Egbuson). Isoken has continued to popup in various lists about memorable romcoms from Nollywood and Tina Mba’s A1-performance is, no doubt, a part of why we keep having that conversation.

Breaded Life (2021)

Breaded Life had a good run at the box office when it first premiered in 2021, and it’s repeating that magic again with its recent Netflix debut. Here, Tina Mba plays a strict mom who’s had it with her spoilt brat son (Timini Egbuson) and chooses to be the instrument that clips his wings, including having him locked up in a police cell, until he decides to make something great out of his life.

It’s a pretty good performance for the onscreen queen.

For Maria Ebun Pataki (2022)

Everything about For Maria Ebun Pataki screams unconventional and terrific and that includes Tina Mba’s performance. Here, she plays the mother-in-law at loggerhead with her daughter-in-law struggling under the weight of postpartum depression. This movie kept raining Oscar-worthy performances from everyone from start to finish; that’s not something we see every day in Nollywood.

Mount Zion Films, the studio behind most of the memorable faith-based movies to hit the average Nigerian audience, has revealed what’s set to be their next big project. It’s a biopic about Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (R.C.C.G.).

The studio recently release a poster via social media to make the announcement.

“Something massive is coming your way. Anticipate. “ENOCH”. The BioEpic of Daddy E.A ADEBOYE. A full length Movie…After – “THE TRAIN”. Another one is “ENOCH”,” the studio announced in a Facebook post.

Not much is known about the Enoch biopic yet, but it’s sure to follow the interesting, faith-inspiring life of Pastor Adeboye.

After making exploits on “Palazzo” alongside DJ Spinall, YBNL Records hot boy Asake is unto the next, and has just teased a new song arriving with a stunning visual that will both release on Thursday, June 16.

The song is titled “Peace Be Unto You.”

Asake shard a snippet of the song’s TG Omori directed visual via Instagram on June 14, and in it we see him lead a sizeable convoy through a section of Lagos in a fancy vintage trike as the streets hailed and waved along.

Peace Be Unto You by Asake will be releasing on June 16 but first, check out a snippet of the song’s visual below.

Disney has unveiled talented Nollywood actress Kehinde Bankole (Blood Sisters) as one of the cast in its upcoming animated film project Kizazi Moto, Generation Fire.

Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire is a 10-part animated anthology series from an array of talented African creators coming to Disney+ soon. These stories will see animators from Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Egypt put on the world’s spotlight. Each film is expected to be roughly 10 minutes.

Not much is known about Kehinde Bankole’s role yet, but she’ll be joining other big African names from around the world, including Florence Kasumba (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Nasty C (Blood and Water).

Oscar-winning director Peter Ramsey (“Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse”) will serve as executive producer for the Disney+ Original anthology, with Tendayi Nyeke and Anthony Silverston as supervising producers. Triggerfish will be the lead studio for the anthology, working in collaboration with animation studios across the continent and globally.

Michael Paull, President, Disney+ and ESPN+, The Walt Disney Company, had this to say about the project upon its first announcement:

“We are bringing the work of a visionary new generation of African filmmakers to Disney+. In addition to delivering thrilling animation for fans of all ages, this collection of ten original films taps into the Afrofuturism phenomenon which was turbo-charged by Marvel’s Black Panther and reflects Disney’s ongoing commitment to partnering with the leading global talent to tell the stories of the world from fresh and authentic points of view.”

Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire creators include Ahmed Teilab (Egypt), Simangaliso ‘Panda’ Sibaya and Malcolm Wope (South Africa), Terence Maluleke and Isaac Mogajane (South Africa), Ng’endo Mukii (Kenya), Shofela Coker (Nigeria), Nthato Mokgata and Terence Neale (South Africa), Pious Nyenyewa and Tafadzwa Hove (Zimbabwe), Tshepo Moche (South Africa), Raymond Malinga (Uganda) and Lesego Vorster (South Africa).

Each film is expected to be roughly ten minutes long and together will comprise a feature-length anthology of original animation that will be released as a Disney+ Original across the globe.

Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, better known as Portable is now a father of two!

The music star welcomed his second child with his partner, Omobewaji Oluwaferanmi Ewatomi.

Taking to his Instagram page on Tuesday, June 14, to share the big news, the revealed his son’s name to be Opeyemi.

“Aliamdlulilai…izza bouncing baby boi Opeyemi Ølüwa Mi Eazy ZAZUU Son @omobewaji_oluwaferanmi_ewatomi Iya baby,” he wrote.

A big congratulations to the couple on the arrival of their child.

Rumour has it that Lady Gaga is in talks to join the Joker sequel titled Joker: Folie a Deux. The eccentric singer turned Oscar-nominated actress is said to be courting the role of Harley Quinn, who is traditionally Joker’s love interest.

Lady Gaga garnered critical acclaim in 2018 when she starred in A Star Is Born remake opposite Bradley Cooper. Her stellar performance earned her an Oscar nomination. Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe has finally spoken up following the incident that transpired between her and Lagos socialite, Omolara Olukotun aka Larrit.

The movie star took her Instagram stories on Monday, June 13, 2022, where she shared her side of the story.

According to Aigbe, Larrit has bullied her several times online prior to their fight.

“I have been bullied several times online by Larrit (Lara). She calls me unprintable names unprovoked. Yesterday, she took it a step further by physically assaulting me,” she wrote.

Larrit had previously reacted to the altercation with a post shared on her Instagram page.

The two women were guests at the party organized by popular businesswoman, Remmy Gold, who gathered family and friends for the launch of her new plaza located in Lekki axis of Lagos.

The event had several movie stars and socialites in attendance including Iyabo Ojo, Aigbe, Eniola Ajao and Bimbo Thomas.

Singer, actor, and all-around talented individual Jennifer Hudson has achieved the prestigious EGOT status after winning a Tony Award as a co-producer for the musical A Strange Loop. Hudson is only the 17th artist in history to achieve this.

The EGOT status is the colloquial name for the honor conferred on any artist who’s won an Emmy award (for television), a Grammy award (for music), an Oscar award (for movie), and a Tony award (for a stage play). Hudson, 40, won her Oscar in 2007 for the film Dreamgirls. She has won two Grammys, and picked up a Daytime Emmy last year as an executive producer of the interactive animation Baba Yaga.

Other living artists in this hallowed club include John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, and Mel Brooks.
