After several pushbacks, Omah Lay has eventually released his debut studio album Boy Alone. The 14-track projects debuted on Friday, July 15, spanning about 38 minutes of listening time.

Lay had earlier shared his frustrations at not being able to release the album as planned, but the projects is here now and fans and fans will be hoping it delivers on quality and excitement.

Three songs had been released off Boy Alone; the hit song ‘Understand,’ ‘Attention’ featuring Justin Bieber, and the more recent ‘Woman.’

In addition to Bieber, the only other guest appearance on Boy Alone is Tay Iwar on the 13th track ‘Tell Everybody.’

Fans all over Africa and around the globe took out time to celebrate renowned Beninese songstress Angelique Kidjo on her birthday.

Born Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo in 1960, Kidjo celebrated her 62nd birthday on Thursday, July 14.

The legendary singer shared a throwback picture of herself via her official Twitter page with the caption “Happy birthday Angélique!” Fans, including institutions like UNICEF soon opened the floodgates of goodwill messages.

Kidjo is one of the most accomplished African personalities, influencing countless contemporary African artists, actors and creatives, and championing multiple humanitarian causes.

Burna Boy shared screenshot of a received recording from Nigerian-born UK rapper Santan Dave on Wednesday, July 14. According to the picture, the recording shares the same title as Burna smash hit Last Last, which was one of the lead singles for his recently released album ‘Love, Damini.’

Burna Boy is on a healthy run of increasing global appeal, especially in the UK and US where he has racked up a good number of collaborators. His recent social media antic may just indicate that a remix of Last Last with Santan Dave is in the works.


The record has become one of the anthems of the year, not just in Nigeria but overseas as well. Burna’s incredible marketing strategy saw him perform the song in front of over 20K New Yorkers during his Madison Square Garden concert when it was soon to be released.

Last Last eventually arrived with a Burna Boy-directed visual a couple of days later and is the Grammy-winner’s biggest singles debut of 2022 so far.

Fans will be hoping that the looming remix with Dave will surpass the original one.

Cynthia Obianodo, wife to Nigerian media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has shared forty reasons why she loves him on his fortieth birthday.

The mother of two made this known via her Instagram page where she also posted an adorable video to mark his birthday.

The Emmy awards, annually, reward the best works to grace the small screen. For 2022, the prestigious award academy drafted Black Panther star, the late Chadwick Boseman, for his first Emmy nomination, posthumously.

Boseman received the nod for his voice-over work in an episode of Marvel Studios’ What If…?

Also recognized posthumously are Archer’s Jessica Walter, who played the foul-mouthed matriarch Mallory Archer, and Norm Macdonald for his nearly hour-and-a-half special, Nothing Special, where he talks about casinos, cannibalism, and why you have to be ready for whatever life throws your way.

Chadwick Boseman and Jessica Walter received their nomination in the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance category alongside the ranks of Stanley Tucci (“Central Park”), F. #3 Brymo — Love Na Drug

Love Na Drug is a 2022 song by indie-whiz Brymo. It’s off his 10th studio album ‘Theta.’ Listening to Brymo’s list plays have become somewhat similar to skimming the pages of your favourite folklore storybook, the difference is that music stimulates the brain more than books do.

#4 Ajebo Hustlers ft Fave — In Love

You know what’s next once you hear the intro ‘Original!’ You know it’s Ajebo Hustlers on the tune. The duo is a powerhouse when it comes to Alte music and they deliver on In Love alongside the talented Fave who lends her skills to the record.

#5 Rema — Jo

Seriously, this song just has Rema at his raving best. His debut album ‘Rave & Roses’ was filled with many established hits, but Jo is one of the refreshing songs on the 16-track album. It’s an instant call-to-dance and you’re likely to form a closer bond with its lyrics once you start listening keenly, making it a potential earworm.

Burna Boy shared a new visual for Vanilla, one the songs on his latest album Love, Damini on Saturday, July 9.

Vanilla is the 15th record on Love, Damini, and the video is the 4th visual to be released off the 19-track project after Kilometre, Last Last, and For My Hand with Ed Sheeran.

Apparently, Burna and eye-fashion powerhouse Ray-Ban as well as Facebook’s parent company Meta linked up to create the video. Just like the song’s Afrobeat tune, its colourful pictures and feel-good scenes match the posh saxophone.

Afrobeat is a standalone musical genre, and using its pluralized form of Afrobeats to refer to all sounds coming from Nigeria and Africa at large is a disservice, as it is not fully reflective of the elusive and diverse music our artists create. Keep reading to know the how and why.

Foreigners have violated our music, often grouping all our sounds under one bijou genre; Afrobeats. In truth, it should never be, as that’s just a very slothful attempt at a job that shouldn’t be that hard. But it may also be an intentional subtle effort to limit the impact and recognition that our music and musicians deserve.

Our modern music is bigger than the pluralisation of one genre, and our artistes prove that time and time again. Forgetting its adulterated Afrobeats form, Afrobeat, is a musical genre pioneered by the legendary Fela Kuti. It mainly continues to live through Fela’s blood descendants Seun, Femi, and Made Kuti. However, before the genre, we had Juju music, Fuji, Oghene, Highlife and a host of others.

What is Afrobeat(s)?
Breaking the word down, Afrobeat is a blend of two words; Afro which refers to anything that has to do with Africa and the African people, and Beat which simply means any kind of rhythmic sound. Perhaps this is why it’s easy for people, especially those who do not fully understand, to jump at pluralising the word, and deploying the resulting term, ‘Afrobeats’ in referring to all mainstream sounds within Nigeria and Africa at large. But we’re more sophisticated than that.

Sonically, Afrobeat is a fully formed genre of music. It’s a blend of Highlife, Juju, and a little bit of Jazz and Funk; thanks to Fela’s exposure to the world outside Africa. It is completed by vocals that attempt to raise political and societal consciousness among the people.

Our modern artists do more than blend Highlife, Juju, Jazz and Funk. Juggernauts like Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid import elements from contemporary Pop, Hip Hop, Soul, Afrobeat, Reggae, Amapiano, Rock and more into their music. Hence, Afrofusion, despite also being a very basic shot at describing our elusive sound, presents a better opportunity.

What is Afrofusion?
The term Afrofusion, like Afrobeat, is a blend of two words; Afro meaning anything that has to do with Africa and the African people, and Fusion which refers to unification. Notwithstanding its shortcomings, it’s a true reflection of the contemporary sound of modern Africa.

What is the difference between Afrobeat(s) and Afrofusion?
Afrofusion is an umbrella term used to describe contemporary Nigerian and African music, while Afrobeat without the ‘s’ is one of the minute genres that exists within Afrofusion. With the ‘s’ as it is in the bastardized Afrobeats, the term represents nothing more than a mere charade, and an unwelcome generalization of the modern music of the second most populated continent in the world.

Conclusion
The US and UK have remained headstrong on their myopic classification of Nigerian and African music, disdaining the rebuttal from some of our woker artists. Early this year, Billboard US introduced an Afrobeats chart, where they group all African songs according to their popularity stateside, a rather icky appendage that only serves to boomerang on the rapidly growing industry.

The continuous disambiguation of Afrobeats, Afrobeat, and Afrofusion by mainstream African media will be key in reversing this redundant boxing and that only serves to place structural limitations on our growth and dampen the splendid work that we do.

Our stars, in the distinct characteristics, styles, and gracefulness of their craft, in truth deserve to be unequivocally recognized and rewarded. It starts with us.

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been thrown into recent mourning with the loss of her father, Vernon Winfrey to cancer.

Oprah took to her social media handle to break the news:

“Yesterday with family surrounding his bedside, I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life, take his last breath. We could feel Peace enter the room at his passing.”

Singer Tems revealed a -not-so-popular layer of her talent on Thursday, July 7. In a Twitter post, the 26-year-old shared pictures of an improvised studio setup where she recorded and produced her first EP For Broken Ears.

‘For Broken Ears’ is Tems first project. It released in 2020 and included hit singles Damages and Free Mind.

According to Tems, she didn’t stop producing, and contributed to the fine production work on her second EP If Orange Was A Place alongside UK-based producer Guilty Beatz. She also added that she’s a 100x better at production than she was when she produced For Broken Ears.

Tems broke out as an independent artist. It was her freestyles and covers of popular songs that earned her her first record deal. So, one way or the other, she was always bound to have been a producer at some point, and improvising to do it goes to show how deep her talent and determination runs.

Kenneth Petty, husband to Trinidadian singer, Nicki Minaj has been sentenced to three years probation, a year in-home detention and a $55,000 fine after failing to register as a sex offender in California.

CBS News reported that the 44-year-old was sentenced on Wednesday July 6, 2022 after pleading guilty to the federal charge in 2021.

In June, federal prosecutors initially wanted to sentence Petty to over a year in jail for failing to register as a sex offender, according to court documents.

“Having previously been convicted of attempted rape, defendant knowingly failed to register as a sex offender upon moving to California,” prosecutors said.

Petty spent four years in prison after being found guilty of a rape in 1994 in New York City. He didn’t register on the sex offenders list when he moved to California with Minaj, which is how the federal authorities caught him.

He pleaded guilty to the attempted rape of Jennifer Hough, a school girl who was then 16 years old.

Fireboy DML will release his third studio album ‘Playboy’ on the 5th of August, a tweet from the YBNL Records singer on Wednesday, July 6 has confirmed.

In the tweet, Fireboy also shared the cover art of the album which depicts the singer donning a milk colour knitwear, his neck adorned by a set of fine pearl necklaces while he gets his hair done by a black lady with popping melanin skin. She rocks a white spaghetti top, one golden bracelet on each arm as well as a couple of rings. The 26-year-old first revealed ‘Playboy’ would drop in August while making a guest appearance at Ed Sheeran’s X-Tour concert at the Wembley Stadium on June 30.

Two songs; Playboy and the unreleased Bandana with fellow YBNL Records mate Asake are expected to be the lead singles off the project. ‘Bandana’ will release on the 15th of this month and will be able to pre-save ‘Playboy’ henceforth.

Rapper M.I Abaga revealed in a July 6 tweet that veteran Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem is battling with kidney disease. According to the tweet, M.I had received the news yesterday, Tuesday, July 5.

An official statement from the rapper’s team posted on Instagram has also confirmed his condition.

The Nigerian Hip Hop Czar, Soicial Crusader and Rights Activist, Eedris Abdulkareem of “Nigeria Jaga Jaga” fame needs the sincere and unalloyed prayers of all Nigerians and his fans around the world in this hours of his travails,” read part of the statement signed by Hon. Myke Pam For: Lakreem Entertainment.

Eedris was a member of Hip Hop pioneering group The Remedies. As well as Eedris, The Remedies consisted of two other members; Tony Tetuila and Eddy Remedy. They were signed to Kennis Music, the same label where 2Face gained prominence.

The Remedies would later split in the 2000’s as they leaned more towards pursuing respective solo careers. In 2006, Eedris released his first solo album ‘Pass‘ featuring hit songs ‘Oke Omoge’ and ‘Oko Achewo.’ However, the 48-year-old legend is most fondly remembered for his controversial hit song ‘Jaga Jaga.’

Other songs in his arsenal of hits include the ‘Mr Lecturer’ song series, ‘Live in Yankee,‘ ‘2 Legs Up,’ and ‘School Boyz.’ His last album was 2020’s 20-track ‘Nothing to talk About.’

M.I also revealed in his tweet that an organ donor has been found and the surgery has been set for July 27, while calling on more people to contribute to saving the veteran musician’s life.

Everyone’s favourite Nollywood Daddy Zaddy Richard Mofe-Damijo (aka RMD) is 61 today!

RMD has had a fulfilling career to this point and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, which we’re here for.

He’s an actor, writer, producer, lawyer, and former journalist. He was also a former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State between 2009 – 2015. In 2005, he won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2016. Among other accolades to his name A very fulfilling career.

RMD is best known for movies like Diamond Ring (1998), 30 Days in Atlanta (2014), The Wedding Party (2016), Fine Wine (2019), and King of Boys: The Return of the King, to mention but a few.

When will Fireboy DML release his 3rd studio album Playboy? Fireboy DML will release the entire Playboy album in August.

It’s about a month and a half since Rihanna became a mother for the first time, welcoming a baby boy with boyfriend A$AP Rocky. The couple have kept things tight behind wraps since their blessing, but they were spotted out in London for the first time since becoming parents.

Boyfriend Rocky returned to the stage to perform at the coveted Wireless Festival and it didn’t take long before images of Rihanna started doing the rounds over the internet.

Nigerian disc jockey and singer, Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola popularly known as DJ Cuppy is all teary with joy as she has finally completed her thesis at Oxford University in England.

The music star took to her Twitter page on July 1st to share her reaction to completing her degree.

“TEARS OF JOY � The wait is finally over!!! My THESIS for @UniofOxford is finally 100% done and submitted!!! ��. Not sure why weeping is my reaction right now. I’m so drained that it actually feels so difficult to celebrate. �” she wrote.

The 29-year-old also revealed how finishing the degree pushed her to the limits, as far as wanting to drop out of the University twice.

“Over the last few weeks, I’ve pushed myself SO much, both mentally and physically to actually finish this degree. Truthfully, this has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life… This paper alone has made me want to drop out of Oxford University twice �” she added.

She had previously opened up on the struggles of returning to school earlier in the year. According to her, going back to school had adverse effect on her progress in the music industry.

Cuppy enrolled in Oxford University in October 2021 and disclosed on the PLT podcast that she applied for fun, with the thought that lectures would be online.

This will be the music star’s second master’s degree as she previously earned a degree in Music Business from New York University in 2015.

She is one of Nigeria’s most influential disc jockeys.

Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has eventually reported himself to the police after being ordered to do so a couple of weeks ago.

We reported earlier that Zazu Zeh singer was alleged to have ordered an assault on a young man in a video that went viral on social media, and was asked to come and give his account on the incident.

Portable reported to the Ogun state Police Command on Wednesday, June 29 in company of his father and manager.

According to the spokesperson of the Police, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, Portable was questioned about his role in the assault.

“He was immediately ordered to be taken to the public complain bureau office by the commissioner of police, CP Lanre Bankole, where he was interrogated about his role in the assault melted to the boy in the video,” he said.

“However, since the offence committed is a bailable one, and coupled with the strike action embarked upon by the civil servants in the state which also affected our courts, the suspect was released to a reliable surety who promised to produce him anytime he is needed.”

Portable has remained a polarizing figure since his ascension to fame. He has often made the news for starting feuds with his record label and management team. However, that didn’t stop his long-time sweetheart from tying the knot with him recently, in the middle of his latest controversy.

Burna Boy has announced a new release date for Love, Damini, the singer’s upcoming sixth studio album. The project has been delayed by a week after originally announcing it will debut on his birthday, the 2nd of July.

Two singles off the album have already been released Last Last and Kilometre. Meanwhile Burna confirmed a joint with Ed Sheeran titled For My Hand is also part of the album when they both performed the unreleased song during the British singer’s X-Tour concert at the Wembley Stadium on July 1. From what we know, Burna Boy’s Love, Damini will have 19 tracks, and will feature an ensemble of international acts including Ed Sheeran. The project will now release on Friday, July 8 and is available for pre-add on your popular streaming platforms.

Nigerian Rapper and film maker, Abdulrasheed Bello popularly known as JJC Skillz, has announced the end of his marriage to his wife and actress, Funke Akindele.

It would be recalled that the father of five refuted rumors pertaining to the crisis surrounding his marriage to actress months ago.

According to several reports, the celebrity couple marriage hit the rocks over alleged financial misappropriation. It was also reported that Skillz moved out of his home following issues with Akindele.

In addition to the rumors, his son, Benito hinted on the rumors being true about the crisis in their marriage.

Hocus Pocus 2 is set 29 years after the events of the first film. It sees the 17th-century witch sisters resurrected after high school friends relight the Black Flame Candle and spark a whole new adventure. Disney released a new synopsis for the sequel to the cult-classic comedy, teasing Hocus Pocus 2’s spooky stakes:

“It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge. The original Hocus Pocus (1993) tells the story of Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson, a trio of witches who are executed for their crimes in 1693. 300 years later, the sinister sisters are summoned into existence by a group of unsuspecting children who must work together to rid the world of the witches’ evil once and for all. The film received mixed reviews with critics enjoying its hokey sense of charm and humor but lamenting its often uninspired writing and direction.
Hocus Pocus 2 is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on Sept. 30.

Chadwick Boseman, star of Black Panther, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and a host of other well-received movies, died without a will. The actor succumbed to a silent battle with colon cancer in 2020 and, now, his widow and his parents have reached an agreement on how to share the fortune he left behind.

According to court documents, Boseman’s estate will be split evenly between his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, and his parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman.

The late actor’s estate was previously valued at $3.8 million, but due to the fact that he left no will in the wake of his death, his estate had to pay significantly higher legal fees than if he had.

50% of the remaining balance will go to his wife and 25% to both his mom and dad, respectively.

Chadwick Boseman will best be remembered for playing the eponymous hero and king of the fictitious Wakanda in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther back in 2018. May his soul continue to rest in peace.
