Nollywood actress, Ireti Doyle has recounted how fellow collegue, Adesua Etomi stepped in to intervene when her daughter was being bullied in school.

In a lengthy post shared via her Instagram page on Thursday, May 26, the movie star while celebrating her daughter’s 18th birthday, detailed how she moved to a new school and was welcomed by bullies.

“NOT SO RANDOM STORY Sooo sisi kekere (can I still refer to her like that?�) had just transferred to a new school having spent her entire academic career up to that point in one place. It took a whole summer of convincing, but I finally caved in – do not underestimate @jemiyodoyle once she’s set her mind on a thing. Anyways, she arrives, bright and bubbly eager to take on new territory and blossom, which she did,” she wrote

Within months of arriving she vied for and won a position on the Students Council. Apparently, that’s not allowed. “You cannot just arrive here and begin to “shine” without “permission”,” she wrote.

The actress then narrated how Etomi helped to manage the situation by accompanying her daughter to the school.

“Oh, the bullying was aggressive! And most of the time, she would beg me not to step in, determined to make her way. Anyways Mrs. Wellington heard about the goings-on and said “Auntie, I’m going to go pick Jem up from school one day”… I said OK,”

On the said day, she asked me to sit in the car. It took longer than usual… @adesuaetomi didn’t just “pick” her from schl…she took her time to stroll around the school compound with her arm around Jemiyo, waving at the students who had become dumbstruck.” she added.

The message was clear: “This is my Beloved, thou shall not touch”. Suffice to say the bullying died down significantly from that day – true star power.”

Doyle is a Nigerian actress, writer, producer and Tv presenter. She is popularly known for hosting and producing her own fashion and lifestyle show titled Oge With Iretiola for 10 years.

Ayinla first premiered in cinemas in June 2021, but with its ascension to Netflix, the biopic about Ayinla Omowura, one of Yoruba’s finest musicians, has met a new audience more eager to embrace it.

Ayinla is a film that tells the story of Nigerian musician, Ayinla Omowura, who used Apala music to address issues of contemporary society – commending and criticizing various governmental and individual acts. Ayinla Omowura died a tragic death on May 6, 1980. Everyone versed in Nigerian music history (particularly in southwestern Nigeria) knows this, and director Tunde Kelani doesn’t try to sugarcoat this tragic end or paint Ayinla as some saint.

With Ayinla’s release on Netflix, star Lateef Adedimeji took to his Twitter handle to, once again, express his gratitude to Tunde Kelani for the opportunity to star as the legendary musician.

“It was a very tough and challenging experience. It was the least of what I was expecting at this stage of my career. I had always prayed to work with Tunde Kelani; even if it was to play a cameo role in any of his movies. So, when the lead role came, I thought it was a dream. I did not believe it until I heard ‘action’ on the first day on set.

“It was challenging because I had not been a fan of apala music and I never listened to it. But, when I got the script, I started listening to apala songs. I had to do a lot of research because there wasn’t much documentation or video recording of any kind on Ayinla Omowura. All the characterisation I did was built based on my own research and everything I had heard and read about him. It was quite a stretch for me. The musical part was also taxing because I had to learn his songs. It was tough but at the end, I am glad it came out well.

“Tunde Kelani is one director that takes his time. I never saw him get angry. If an actor was not getting it right, he would tell the person to calm down and relax. While acting, if he was not satisfied with my performance, he would tell me to improve. And immediately, I gave him what he wanted, he would commend me.

“God bless him for us.”

Ayinla is now streaming on Netflix.

Davido shared the music video for his latest single Stand Strong featuring Sunday Service Choir, The Samples on May 25.

The song which premiered on the 13th of May, officially flagged off Davido’s new album roll out, as we await the project’s title, track listing, and cover art.

Announcing the release of the video, the Sony Music act wrote on social media: “Stand Strong visuals out now ���� ! …. Enjoy ! I love y’all! ❤️��.”

Produced by renowned Nigerian record producer and singer, Pheelz, Stand Strong is currently the 7th most streamed song on Appple Music’s Top 100 Nigeria chart after originally debuting at number 1.

Have you seen the list of nominees for the 2022 Headies Award?

The nominees list for the 2022 Headies Award have been unveiled at long last, with, as usual, surprise inclusions and snubs trailing the list.

Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter Cheque took Twitter few hours after the unveiling to have a dig at The Headies board after it appeared he had not been nominated in any of the categories for Rap/Hip Hop.

“Another year and the HEAdIES fails to recognize my music in the Rap category, while melodic rappers like Durk and Roddy are idolized in the rap scene worldwide That’s why HiPhop has remained Stagnant HERE but It’s Calm I will still be dropping HiTs even if I don’t get my Flowers,” tweeted Cheque.

Although Cheque sings too, he’s predominantly a rapper. His debut studio album “Bravo” released in 2021 and is a fusion of Trap, emo Rap, and Pop delivered in an African iteration.

It’s the 2022 Headies Award season, Nigeria, and arguably Africa’s most coveted prize for contributing to the development of the music industry.

At long last, the highly anticipated list of nominees for the 2022 Headies Award has been unveiled by the organizers, with Nigerian Afrobeats and Pop giant, Wizkid leading the way with 10 nominations.

Wizkid has been recognized in almost all the top categories, including Nigerian Male Artist of The Year, African Artist of The Year, Record of The Year, Album of The Year and lots more. Davido has 5 nominations, while Burna Boy bagged 3, including for African Artist of The Year.

Adekunle Gold, rapper AQ, Ayra Starr, Kizz Daniel, Timaya, Johnny Drille, Tems, Brymo, Olamide, Show Dem Camp, Basketmouth, Fireboy DMl, Simi, Flavour, Buju Bnxn, Vector, Ladipoe, Jesse Jagz, 2Face Idibia, Don Jazzy, Fally Ipupa, Wyclef Jean, Akon, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and more were also nominated.

Nigerian singer and politician, Bankole Wellington popularly known as Banky W has won the house of representatives primaries for the Eti-Osa Federal constituency under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

This was made known in a viral video on social media, where the votes of the primaries were counted and closely monitored by the delegates and members of the party.

This is the music star’s second attempt at winning a seat in the green chambers of the National Assembly.

He won with twenty-eight votes while his closest opponent scored three votes.

The music executive announced that he’ll be running for the House of Reps seat back in April.

“We must engage with Nigeria where it is, not where we prefer for it to be. In 2019, we planted the seed. In 2023, by the grace of God, and with your support, we will win the seat. The time for just talking is over. It’s time to #TalkAndDo. I hope I can count on you. We move,” he tweeted at that time.

Banky W first announced his decision to run for the house of representatives back in November 2018.

The news was largely received by both fans and industry colleagues.

He however lost the elections to Ibrahim Obanikoro of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Daredevil season 4 is finally happening!

Following Marvel Studios’ chief Kevin Feige’s previous announcement about the certainty of Matt Murdock joining the main MCU in a more fleshed-out role than his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, new details have come to light about the studio’s plan to move forward with the fan-favorite character.

Marvel Studios described the revival as a “new yet continued show”. Matt Corman and Chris Ord are attached as writers and executive producers of the series, and, from all indications, it should begin shooting later this year or early 2023. This (unofficial but somewhat credible) report is coming four years after the show ended its three-season run on Netflix, alongside all the other MCU shows there. The main cast is expected to return but since nothing is yet set in stone, read on for a list of things we hope to see when Daredevil resurrects on Disney+.

What is a Daredevil story without Wilson Fisk played by Vincent D’Onofrio? Absolutely nothing, if you ask me. D’Onofrio has owned this role since he first stepped into the shoes left vacant by Michael Clarke Duncan in the 2003 Daredevil movie. The actor has brought a kind of physicality and intentionality that makes the role feel much more impactful than it would’ve been if a less-perfect actor had been cast in it. D’Onofrio has already made his main MCU debut in the Hawkeye series, which makes it much more likely than any of the other actors from the former Netflix series to see him in Daredevil season 4.

If there’s one thing the Daredevil TV show got right it’s its casting. Supporting Charlie Cox in the titular lead role is a bevy of talented actors, including Elden Hensen (Foggy Nelson), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elodie Yung (Elekta), and Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), to mention but a few. I’d love to see them all return to the series, and I want to bet I’m not alone.

Wilson Bethel joined Daredevil in its final season on Netflix to play FBI Special Agent Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, better known as the popular comic book character Bullseye. His portrayal was a brutal one, and the way the season ended left room for more stories involving the classic character. Bethel might be contractually obligated to All Rise on OWN right now, but I hope the producers can find a way around his schedule to fit the character in the upcoming new season.

Disney is a family-oriented brand, so, rightly, fans of Daredevil are worried about what the move from Netflix to Disney+ will mean for the beloved show. In some ways, Moon Knight, a similarly brutal comic book character, was used to test the waters, but not everyone is a fan of how that turned out. Dear Marvel Studios, please push yourselves to the limits of what’s obtainable with a PG-13 rating with Daredevil season 4.

A Great Story in 10 Episodes or Less

Overall, what we want is a great Daredevil story. If Disney+ can give this to us, I’m confident fans will be glad. Until that happens, we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed.

The future of Afrobeats arguably lies in the hands of Nigerian artists.

Juxtaposing alongside the world’s most followed musical genres, Afrobeats is well in its prime. Maintaining context, it’s a great time to be associated with the African continent, as both American and European audiences, stars and record labels jostle for a piece of the continent’s vibrant and enthralling musical genre.

Modern African music antecedents: Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Chief Osita Osadebe and more, beyond reasonable doubt prospered in laying the solid foundation that inspired many all-time-greats. From mid to late 2000’s pioneers such as 2Face Idibia, P Square, Dbanj, and 9ice to more contemporary acts like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, that list could well continue.

Today, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy are major trailblazers, taking the bubbly Afrobeats’ global appeal stateside and beyond, to new meridians. They all continue to navigate previously uncharted waters with enviable success.

Whether they’ve been aided by the internet and social media or not, they’ve led the way for the next generation of Afrobeats stars. And, like it or not, just like every other star, they cannot maintain this profound run forever.

Even if they attempt to, the dynamics of popular demand will not allow, as culture might shift, commercial viability may decrease, or they may even lose interest in the art and decide to pursue other things.

One way or the other, they will eventually have to pass the torch to a new crop of artists, who will advance or at minimum, maintain the genre’s current palatable standards.

Good news is that it appears there are many of them; some already established and some just up and coming, whom we all agree could take the game to another all-time-high.

After careful consideration, we’ve come up with a list of 10 artists who could potentially become the future of Afrobeats, the next vanguards of contemporary African music.

Despite their varying levels of success and length of career, these guys have attained some notoriety and commercial success.

There’s still a lot to do, but they’ve shown one way or the other that they have what it takes to cement their places among Afrobeats all-time-greats.

Tems — Temilade Openiyi

Tems’ big break came in 2018/19 after single “Try Me” became a big hit. A couple of EPs; “For Broken Ears” (2020) and “If Orange Was A Place” (2021), and several high profile international collaborations has seen her bag Grammy nominations despite her relatively young career. Her freewheeling delivery and emotional rawness, coupled with those signature long braids has made her one of Afrobeats’ potential icons.

CKay — Chukwuka Ekweani

When the Recording Industry Association of America launched the Billboard Afrobeats Chart, CKay’s 2019 smash hit “Love Nwantiti” immediately debuted at number 1 and stayed there for long. The record and several others have made CKay a big hitter, who not only writes songs but can produce them as well.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

This movie is widely considered a masterpiece by many and Yeoh was one of the contributors to its stellar acting performances. The story follows a warrior and his lover’s attempt to recover Green Destiny, his stolen sword. Chow Yun-Fat and Zhang Ziyi co-star alongside Michelle Yeoh.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Anyone hoping to marry into a family (of considerable status) hopes to not get a mother-in-law like Michelle Yeoh’s Eleanor Young. Poor Rachel had to work twice as had to win the woman’s heart, and the whole antagonistic sequence was twice as believable because of Yeoh’s stellar performance.

Bonus: Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)

This is Michelle Yeoh’s latest movie, and everyone seems to be loving it with some calling it the multiversal story away from the MCU.

Music star, Rihanna is the latest mom on the block!

The Barbarian singer and business woman has welcomed her first child, a baby boy with American rapper, A$AP Rocky on Friday, May 13, 2022.

Their child’s name is yet to be known, however, TMZ reports the couple had him in Los Angeles.

It would be recalled that the couple first announced that they were expecting a baby in February 2022.

The couple had sparked romance rumors since Rihanna split from her boyfriend of three years, billionaire Hassan Jameel in January 2020. That July, she featured A$AP Rocky in her Fenty Skin campaign, and the duo did several interviews together to promote the collaboration.

The rapper later confirmed that they were dating in 2021.

Rapper, MI Abaga and entertainment journalist, Joey Akan are battling it out on Twitter over the rap and hip hop genre in Nigeria.

In the early hours of Thursday, May 19, popular MI Abaga took a swipe at Akan on Twitter while responding to his tweet about American rapper Da Baby visiting Nigeria to shoot a video with Davido.

MI Abaga accused the journalist of disesteeming rappers. Akan responded saying the rapper’s music was what earned him respect in the past, and that he didn’t need to demand respect.

That kicked off another round of replies as MI tweeted, saying the journalist was an enemy of Nigerian hip hop.

But Akan wasn’t having it, and served his own rebuttal, charging MI Abaga of spilling dirty secrets about artists to tarnish their image and paying to get their songs off radios. He also added that he’d been turning down rendezvous request from the rapper, and that’s why he apparently hates him.

The rap and hip hop genre in Nigeria has been hot topic recently, with MI often in the thick of things. The first episode kicked off with when American rapper Rick Ross performed in Lagos and Abuja without any rappers on the roaster.

Several rappers including YCee and MI deplored the situation and blamed it on organizers and show promoters.

Although the genre has been on a steady decline since the mid 2010s, MI has mainly remained true to his craft, refusing to change his style like most artists who started out as rappers. He currently has an album in the works.

Just in case you missed it, there’s a Falz the Bahd Guy album on the way, and it is titled “Bahd.” The gifted entertainer has also been walking fans through the making of “Bahd” with some insightful video on Instagram, where Falz and some of the producers share information about the inspiration behind the songs on the upcoming album.

“Bahd” will be out on the 9th of June, and would be the prolific musician’s fifth solo album.

Nigerian comedian and Internet sensation, Joshua Alfred popularly known as Josh2Funny and his wife, Bina have welcomed their first child, a baby boy.

The comedian took to his Instagram page on Tuesday, May 17, where he announced the great news.

“Now let’s officially welcome the owner of these legs, a new Minister, a King and more, an Optununuan Eden Alfred,” he wrote.

The couple revealed they were expecting a child earlier in April when they shared photos from their maternity shoot.

Earlier this year in February, Showrunner Arese Ugwu revealed the show had been renewed and shared a photo from the “first Pre-production meeting for Smart Money Woman Season 2 � with my (her) female-led team”

The creative team alluded to were Bunmi Ajakaiye (the director), Lala Akindoju, and Isoken Ogiemwonyi.

The main cast of Smart Money Woman is expected to return for this second season, including Osas Ighodaro, Ini Dima-Okojie, Toni Tones, Kemi Lala Akindoju, Ebenezer Eno, Seun Ajayi, Taymesan Emmanuel, and Nonso Bassey, to mention but a few.

No release date has been announced yet, nor details about whether it’ll first premiere on Africa Magic, like the first season, or on Netflix.

With each dawn comes a different woe with Nigerian singer, Korra Obidi and her estranged husband, Justin Dean.

The most recent is the accusation made by the Los Angeles based doctor who alleged that the singer cheated on him while she was pregnant with their second child.

Speaking in a live video session on his Instagram page, Dean stated Obidi was trying to destroy him because she believes he would expose her extramarital affairs.

“She is trying everything she can to destroy me because she thinks I’m going to tell people she cheated on me while she was pregnant,” he said.

Prolific Nigerian rapper M.I. Abaga has said Nigerians don’t appreciate his music after listening to the newly releases fifth studio album of American rapper Kendric Lamar.

MI made this known in a tweet he posted on May 14, a day after Lamar released the sensational “Mr Morale & The Big Steppers.”

The album has been praised by many, including legendary American rapper Eminem, who told Dr Dre on Twitter that the album “is f****** ridiculous.”

It’s easy to spot why MI said Nigerian fans don’t appreciate him enough, seeing as he’s easily one of the best Nigerian musicians when it comes to bewitching lyricism and making conscious music, which is mostly what Kendrick Lamar gets praised for.

The 2022 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA) has come and gone, but the memories it left us with still feel fresh and we are burning to talk about what went down at this year’s edition of the prestigious event.

The 8th edition of the AMVCA took place at Eko Hotel and Suites. The Red Carpet flung open at 4 PM and the stars showed up and showed out. Clearly, there were a few misses, but, generally, I think the Nigerian Fashion Industry has only gotten bolder and, depending on who you ask, better.

The main event was about 3 hours 30 minutes long and was packed with a lot of memorable moments; we’ll be highlighting some of our favourites, so let’s go!

Just when you thought you’d heard the last of The Slap saga from the 2022 edition of the Oscars, the AMVCAs bring it right back to your doorstep. Not everyone gets to live the best years of their life abroad, then return home to a rousing welcome. But that’s the story of Taiwo Ajai-Lycett. Eloquent, gorgeous, and still very graceful at 81, Ajai-Lycett lived and worked in the UK for many years before returning to Nigeria to star in the M-net hit drama series Tinsel for starters. Taiwo Ajai-Lycett received the industry merit award last night, which we think was very deserving.

Teniola Aladese is only just getting started in Nollywood and the world better get ready for her. The budding actress received the trailblazer award at the AMVCA 2022, which came with a prize tag of one million Naira. Further solidifying the actress’ joy with a personal, additional $2,000 was American actress Tasha Smith. Kudos to the trailblazer!

‘Rattesnake: The Ahanna Story’ sweeps home awards – Na which baba do this jazz for Play Network Studio?
Play Network Studios dominated the 2021 AMVCA, and they’ve done same with this year’s edition, too. Rattle Snake: The Ahanna Story, the studios’ frontrunner for the award season took home five award plaques, including the awards for Best Director for Ramsey Nouah, Best Actor for Stan Nze, and Best Actress for Osas Ighodaro. This is no mean feat. If anyone reading this has a direct line to Studio Exec Charles Okpaleke (aka Charles of Play), please tell him to call me – I need his baba’s contact.

The winner of the Best Actress in a Drama series, Osas Ighodaro also doubled as the best dressed female of the night. Although a voting category, many would argue Osas’ win is well-deserved. Nigerian singer and dancer, Korra Obidi has admitted to cheating on her husband on her husband, Justin Dean just before they got married.

The mother of two made this known alongside her sister, Nancy Umeh in a live video session where she also revealed that her husband has an 18-year-old mistress.

Relating her side of the story concerning their marriage woes, the singer opposed being a chronic cheat and explained it was a one time affair.

“Most of you have heard one side of the story, its time for you to hear my side of the story. I’m not a chronic cheat, I’m far from a chronic cheat. I’m just a woman who was honest to her husband.

Umm before I came to America, it was during the Trump’s tenure, I was very indecisive about moving and I tasted from Pandora’s box; I had an affair. That affair lasted like one date, I feel bad about it but I had not moved to America,” she said.

“Up on getting to America, I was very very sad that I had made that mistake with the guy. I told him the truth, I said “hey, I had an affair in Nigeria and I don’t want us to ever have secrets.”

Obidi added that Dean did not take the news well and instead subjected her to emotional and physical abuse which eventually led to her losing a pregnancy.

The singer also shared videos of Dean with his alleged 18-year-old mistress all loved up on a trip in Brazil.

It would be recalled that the Los Angeles based chiropractor accused his estranged wife of being a chronic cheat, as he cried out over her narcissism and lack of accountability.

He announced his decision to divorce the singer in March 2022, few days after the birth of their second child.

Michelle Jackson, ex-wife to Nigerian music record producer, and executive, Don Jazzy has revealed the reason their marriage crashed.

The UK based singer who doubles as a model made this known during a chat with Nigerian radio station, Naija 107.2 FM.

According to Jackson, music was the main reason their union didn’t work out. She added that everything between them changed after JJC Skillz discovered her husband.

He just needed to go and be himself and go and do his music. Music got in the way of the relationship. We were very young as well,” she said.

“If I were in the same situation now, it might have been very different.”

Jackson also stated that age was also a factor in their failed marriage as she got married barely a week after her 22nd birthday.

In 2021, Don Jazzy dropped his crashed marriage bombshell on social media.

Hot on the heels of his irresistible performance at the recently concluded Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, where he happened to also win a couple of awards, Black Sherif has shared a teaser video for his globetrotting hit single “Kwaku the Traveler.”

“Kwaku the Traveller” currently occupies the number 5 spot on the Billboard Afrobeats chart.

In the teaser video shared by Black Sherif, he first appears to be giving a speech in front of a restive audience. We then see him getting his mug shot taken, then the video closes out with police infiltrating a basketball court where the Ghanain singer seems to be working out.

According to Sherif’s Instagram post, the video is directed by Ghanaian filmmaker David Nicol-sey who also directed Amarae’s 2019 video for “Like It”.

Opeyemi Falegun, former partner to Nollywood actress, Nkechi Blessing has revealed the reason he ended things with her.

In a new video shared via his Instagram page, the aspiring politician revealed that he broke up with the movie star over her personal hygiene.

According to him, she hardly washed her underwear and brushed her teeth in the mornings.

“I apologised to her because I just want bygone to be bygone. Not because I want her back. Are you serious? Do you know why I left? I left for a different reason. Personal hygiene.

You have to tell a woman to change her pants in three days. You have to tell a woman to brush her teeth in the morning. After the whole thing, everywhere is messed up. You want me to manage that? No, I wouldn’t.”

Barely a year after Money Heist ended its five-season run, Netflix has resurrected the franchise.

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area is a South Korean iteration of the Spanish heist crime drama series. Why Netflix would think a copycat series so close to its predecessor is a good idea is still amiss to the public, but on the part of the streaming service, marketing publicity is in already in gear.

The series’ synopsis reads:

“Money Heist: Korea takes place as North and South Korea are on the verge of a peaceful reunification after nearly 80 years of division. But as the nations prepare to print a brand-new unified currency, a heist is hatched. A genius strategist known as The Professor assembles a motley crew of top-tier thieves from north and south in an attempt to steal the new currency straight from the mint.”

Netflix’s newly launched teaser features the characters in the familiar red overalls but replaces the famous Salvador Dalí masks with traditional Korean Hahoe-inspired masks.

The Korean series is directed by Kim Hong-sun and written by Ryu Yong-jae. It stars Squid Game’s Park Hae-so (Berlin), Yoo Ji-tae (Professor), Jun Jong-seo (Tokyo), Lee Won-jong (Moscow), Kim Ji-hun (Denver), Jang Yoon-ju (Nairobi), Lee Hyun-woo (Rio), Kim Ji-hoon (Helsinki) and Lee Kyu-ho as Oslo, among others.

Popular Nigerian rapper, singer, and actor Falz aka Falz the Bahd Guy announced the title and release date of his next album on May 10.

The multi-talented entertainer took to his Instagram page to share a picture that revealed the album’s title; BAHD and its debut date of June 9 this year.

“BAHD” will become Falz’s 5th studio album and a follow up to 2019s’ “Moral Instructions,” which had hits such as “Hypocrite,” “Talk” and “After All Said And Done.”

Falz has alwas maintained that music should always carry a message, and has often used his to address the numerous ills facing his home country, Nigeria.

He also has a brand new single alongside Waje titled “Vibes,” dropping on May 13.

Keep your ears open for when “BAHD” drops on June 9.
