Lagos state govrnment through Gbenga Omotoso, the commissioner for Information and strategy reacted to the attacks on Shoprite Complexes at Jakande and Sangotedo Area of Ajah by some unidentified people claiming to be acting in retaliation against the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. https://i0.wp.com/showbiz.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/c0a479e1-jide-sanwo-olu-.jpg?resize=640%2C367&ssl=1 The state government said, ‘these attacks are condemned as they are against the Nigerian spirit of accommodation and benevolence that the country in general and Lagos State in particular is noted for. The Federal Government is in dialogue with South African Authorities to stop this obnoxious act. We appeal to our compatriots to eschew violence and any unlawful acts. The Lagos State Government wishes to reiterate its commitment to providing a conducive atmosphere where businesses are conducted without hindrances. The security agencies have been directed to ensure that law and order prevail in all parts of the State, even as Lagosians are advised to go about their activities without any fear. |
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has queried the South African government over its cold feet in protecting Nigerians and their businesses during the recent xenophobic attacks in the country, and also called for an end of South African businesses in Nigeria. https://i1.wp.com/showbiz.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Orji-Uzor-Kalu-899-650x400.jpg?resize=640%2C394&ssl=1 In a statement released by his media aide, Kunle Oyekunle, the Chief Whip of the ninth Senate and former Governor of Abia State asserted that South Africans have lived and carried out their businesses peacefully in Nigeria. He stressed that the arrest of South Africans behind the attack is not enough. “The gruesome killings, looting, arson of property belonging to Nigerians and attack of Nigerian Embassy in South Africa is ill-conceived, disheartening and wicked. “How can any sensible person attack and burn a fellow human being just because he or she has a feeling to do so? “Those mindless criminals who attacked and prevented law-abiding Nigerians to freely conduct their businesses must be made to pay for their crimes. “Arresting them is not enough. If the South African government fails to do more to protect the lives of Nigerians, there should be no reason to allow them to operate freely in Nigeria. “All their enterprises deserve to be closed down including MTN, DSTV, Shoprite among others. “In the spirit of brotherhood, we have supported them. Our doors have always been open, but it’s time to retaliate by shutting our doors,” he said. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who commended President Buhari for sending a special envoy to South Africa, also urged the Nigerian government to put out stiffer measures against South Africa over the endless xenophobic attacks. |

A priest in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ikechukwu Ilo, was attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen along Numeh- Nenwe road in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state. In a statement released by the Director of Communication, Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi, says Father Ilo was riding in his car to his parish with one Mrs Chike Egbo when they were attacked by AK47 wielding herdsmen on Wednesday evening July 17th. According to Fr Achi, two herdsmen came out from the bush and ordered the clergyman to stop his car. For refusing to obey their order, the herdsmen allegedly opened fire on the clergyman, causing him and the other occupant to sustain gunshot injuries. https://i0.wp.com/showbiz.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/ffu.jpg?w=500&ssl=1 Rev Fr. Achi quoted Father Ilo as saying “As we drove towards the village, the Fulani killer herdsmen, who spoke both in English and Fulani languages, opened fire, trying to force us to stop. Seeing that we were not ready to cave in to their intimidation, they started raining bullets on our vehicle at close range and in the process, shot me at my ankle and shoulder while the other victim was shot in her leg and waist.” Achi said Father Ilo was immediately rushed o to the Annunciation Specialist Hospital, Emene where he is receiving treatment. Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, Ebere Amaraizu, said investigations into the matter has commenced. She however denied allegations that the attack was by Fulani herdsmen. “The Enugu State command of the Nigeria Police Force through its operatives are investigating the attack by robbers on a priest identified as Rev. Fr. Ikechukwu Ilo of St. Patrick Parish, Numeh on Wednesday July 18, 2019, along Numeh axis of Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State by unidentified persons, contrary to speculations of attack by a terrorist group.” Amaraizu said Source: Show Biz |
