i think carmack is merely reiterating what has earlier been said late last year. some dudes conducted a test comparison last year and came up with the same results.

Wot's there 2 fear about open-source?

I can imagine some dudes coming up with a way to make Android work on the iPhone as well. But anyway, the real reason other OSes should worry is that Android is coming from Google. They have enough leverage to replicate their success in the computer/internet arena in the cellphone/internet arena.

Pete, i don't get this: "Piracy may harm the chances of some cool stuff appearing on the appstore".
Phones › Re: New Iphone 3g by logica(m): 12:58pm On Aug 01, 2008
i would expect so for the phone to be called 3G, & since that's where Europe is at. Even AT&T upgraded their network late last year so most likely it does. I did check and see some links:

http://www.slashphone.com/126/8865.html

http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/04/softbank-to-sell-iphone-in-japan/

I also found this piece in Wikipedia on UMTS:

"There are almost no 3G phones or modems available supporting all 3G frequencies (UMTS850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz). Some modems like the Huawei E270 meet this specification [2], however many phones are offering more than one band which still enables extensive roaming. For example, a tri-band chipset operating on 850/1900/2100MHz, such as that found in Apple's iPhone, allows usage in the majority of countries where UMTS is deployed."

"Mac OS X-like iPhone OS Based: with 7% of the market. Apple's first generation iPhone did not support 3G and is restricted to using the EDGE standard. Apple stated this was to maintain a reasonable battery life on the telephone. As power consumption of 3G chipsets improved, Apple released a UMTS (3G) iPhone on July 11, 2008."

it would seem some naija networks are on HSPDA though since they claim 3.5G.

Phones › Re: New Iphone 3g by logica(m): 4:40pm On Jul 31, 2008
GPRS by itself is 2.5

E-GPRS or EDGE is 2.75

UMTS which is an extension of GPRS is 3G, so if anybody considers GPRS as 3G, they refer to UMTS.

u miss the importance of Installer. if the installed apps don't show up as installed in Installer, how then do u go about updating the apps? it all gets real messy that u end up reinstalling the apps through Installer again just to get them registered as installed.
Phones › Re: New Iphone 3g by logica(m): 5:09pm On Jul 29, 2008
just like i bought my first iphone last year june at $599 (& long before the unlock succeeded), i don't see why u cannot buy now in anticipation, afterall there are indeed no-contract (pay-as-u-go) iphones. yes i know it's scarce right now but it's available in germany & france from reports but of course they will be more expensive than the US prices as expected (if i had been in the US myself i probably would've gotten 1 by now). but u cannot simply state that buying right now if u live in nigeria is a bad idea. of course as usual it's a matter of time for the unlock & most times the unlock targets the current version (which may be out of stock by the time the unlock is available - leading to an almost paradoxical scenario).
Phones › Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 5:55pm On Jul 28, 2008
that "trick" isn't very reliable, and u can't always simply backup Application folder and think everything is uhuru (even though i did that earlier this year and used the backup to quickly transfer all the apps on my phone to other phones essentially creating an image). the reason it doesn't always work is several of the apps also place configuration files (plist files) somewhere in the /System path. without the plist files in the required paths, the app crashes back to springboard on launch as happens anytime the app is not properly setup. 1 in particular (i think IntelliSense) even put files in several other paths. the "trick" only works for simple apps. & even worse, the installed apps will not show up in Installer as installed when you install them using this shortcut method (it's like installing a windows app without putting the app info in the windows registry).
Phones › Re: New Iphone 3g by logica(m): 5:39pm On Jul 28, 2008
for the 8g, it is $199 for new customers and customers who qualify for an upgrade in supported countries, and who purchase it with a contract (not sure what the 16g is - maybe $299). for those who purchase without a contract, it is $499 for the 8G and $599 for the 16G. please visit apple.com for details (i read the terms like 3 weeks ago so i'm not sure i am giving you accurate info, and the terms may have changed). they should soon start trickling into nigeria in anticipation of the cracks. smiley

FLEX is based on a technology similar 2 AJAX. they both involve manipulation of the DOM @ the low level, only that FLEX uses ActionScript while AJAX of course uses Javascript. No need for a long essay though, I said RIA => Web 2.0 paradigm which is all you need to know.
Programming › Re: Rich Internet Applications - What Do They Mean? by logica(m): 6:01pm On Jul 18, 2008
RIA refers to web applications based on new paradigms like Web 2.0 which of course are heavily based on AJAX. I think you should find a better definition on wikipedia. Use google smiley

Do a search for the company called VANSO Nigeria Limited. They provide infrastructure for SMS based applications. They should be able to help you.

you're actually the 1 making the proverbial mountain.

1st, the creator of winpwn was only being as upfront and academic as possible when he adds the RC1 suffix to the releases as he felt his product was not good enough to be called a full release (possibly he is a perfectionist). his releases are no worse than many other software we have been using for the jb/unlock process. all of them are liable to bricking (as accurately pointed out by pete) but of course the bricking incidents are reduced to a minimum. like i pointed out, i only had a problem with the .99 beta and the very 1st 1.0 release. and again the point i made was i had said there were minor releases for 1.0 and u said there was only one 1.0 (basically saying there are no other releases either minor or major). next u said pwnage is going 2.0 and winpwn wasn't, and again u were wrong. there really shouldn't be a big deal though, since winpwn is simply supposed to be a windows port of pwnage.

and .99 must have had both alpha and beta, but of course the beta is the version released to the wider community for testing. alpha s/w as i'm sure u know is usually only released to a restricted community of testers. so u cannot say .99 was just alpha.

what's all this crap? did somebody miss the intended thread?
Phones › Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 4:00pm On Jul 14, 2008
i clearly said there were MINOR releases for 1.0 and you said there was only one. A lot of important fixes were made to arrive at 1.0.0.3 RC1 and a lot of people who downloaded the first release - 1.0 had messed up a lot of phones. I had simply mentioned that 1.0.0.3 doesn't have all those problems. simple.

and winpwn is going 2.0 as well. just check out the website.
Phones › Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 12:40pm On Jul 14, 2008
Ex Inferis:

You are wrong. There have been 2 minor releases for winpwn version 1.0. The versions are:

1.0 RC1
1.0.0.2 RC1
1.0.0.3 RC1

The minor versions of course were for bug fixes.

The last is of course the latest and that's the one I use.
Phones › Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 9:58pm On Jul 11, 2008
i have used the latest 1.0 release to create @ least 4 different custom ipsw files. I believe there have been 3 minor releases for version 1.0 so you may want to get the latest (which is probably 1.0.3 or something). The very first 1.0 release was indeed quite buggy but the bugs were quickly fixed. I only had a problem in version .99 which of course was beta.
Phones › Re: iPhone Killer Apps Section!! by logica(m): 4:23pm On Jul 11, 2008
u probably used the beta release of winpwn before the 1.0 release. The latest release is pretty decent and stable. & yeah, 2.0 has already been jailbroken and unlocked (the day after the firmware beta was leaked) but the guys are not releasing it just yet.
Programming › Re: Java Server Pages (jsp) Or Java Server Face(jsf Which Path To Trend? ? ? ? by logica(m): 4:10pm On Jul 11, 2008
What I mean is, the view components of JSF are more often implemented as JSPs. How can they then be competitors? It's like saying Portlets and JSPs are competitors, or Struts and JSPs are competitors.

Check this article out if in doubt:

http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2004/jw-1213-jsf.html

Or simply go to google and do a search using the 2 terms "JSF" and "JSP". I'm sure you will find enough articles on their relationship.

As a matter of fact, the official page of JSF is here:

http://java.sun.com/javaee/javaserverfaces/overview.html

And I quote directly from the home page:

JavaServer Faces technology includes:

* A set of APIs for representing UI components and managing their state, handling events and input validation, defining page navigation, and supporting internationalization and accessibility.
* A JavaServer Pages (JSP) custom tag library for expressing a JavaServer Faces interface within a JSP page.
Programming › Re: Guru In The House, Please Help Me by logica(m): 11:35pm On Jul 08, 2008
The fact that it's a desktop app doesn't mean it cannot connect to a DB on the network. Best design is to have all the desktop app  instances connect to a central DB server. And yes, you can distribute the app as a jar or use a java app installer of which there are several - some even allow u 2 create MSI & EXE files.

Read up on Java Web Start for details.
Phones › Nokia Buys Symbian: Implications by logica(op): 2:39pm On Jun 26, 2008
Analysts say the idea behind the buy is to thwart Google (Android) and Apple (iPhone OS). Really? But Apple really has no care for Symbian since the iPhone OS is only meant for the iPhone, and this may actually be advantageous to Google since now control of Symbian has passed to Nokia (meaning other phone companies can be shackled by Nokia).

Your thoughts.

UPDATE: Nokia plans to release Symbian as open-source: Direct assault on Android.

the mere fact that you can ONLY view it in appletviewer could mean:

[list]
[li]the applet wasn't properly written[/li]
[li]you didn't set the width and height in the html code[/li]
[li]you are using IE to try to view the applet. if you must view using IE, you have to stick to Java 1.1 if you are using the IE JVM (which most people do). if your applet was written in anything above 1.1, IE cannot be used to view the applet. You will have to use Mozilla or install the Sun JVM for IE.[/li]
[li]you don't have a JVM installed for your browser[/li]

Update: Somebody inadvertently helped me test my MMS reception capability.

I did receive it, after pressing the "receive" button several times (just like 2 get through 2 somebody might need several attempts in this our terrible GSM network) & enabling EDGE (which I had disabled but I'm not sure this had anything to do with the latter success), but to view it I had to use MobileFinder. On the other hand I simply view it by downloading the image file to my laptop (WIFI/WinSCP). MMSes are stored in the "~/Media/MMSFiles" folder. "~" translates to "/private/var/mobile" in the file-system.

Phones › Re: $199 3g Iphone: by logica(m): 4:11pm On Jun 13, 2008
pete,

u don't seem 2 understand. even if the 3G is locked inside on the board with chains as huge as those used during the slave trade and with padlocks, they will be unlocked. what i am waiting to try out is the assertion that any custom ipsw created with winpwn should install on any iphone and future designs as long as the architecture remains the same. b4 winpwn, u couldn't install a custom ipsw. now if u cannot pwn the 3G, then that's a problem. but i know they will get around them and develop a 3G version if the current one doesn't work.

with the contract thing with at&t, what will simply happen is at&t will find out they cannot account for a whole bunch of phones whose owners seem to have valid contracts. if hackers can develop cracks for the phone, they can also trick the registration process.

It seems Java want to be used for designing presentation as well. But the question(and reason for my new thread) is this, "Can Java(Netbeans IDE,etc) compete with other proven technologies such as Macromedia Suite(specifically Dreamweaver, Fireworks) , Adobe, and Microsoft Web Expressions , which are very productive for developing the presentation part of Web applications?"?? "My answer is an emphatic No?".

so before JSF, Java didn't have any presentation technology? Or are you saying we weren't designing JSP presentation logic using DreamWeaver for instance before JSF? What do you really think JSPs are?

If this continues and people like sbucareer proffer solutions unlike u who onle comment(for controversial purpose, OWAMBE!!!)
you are talking as if you posted a problem and asked for a solution. your thread in local parlance "no get head no get tail".
