And what does this useless post have to do with Nigeria politics? Is this meant to be in the politics section? |
Mama Ngozi, stop playing around with figures. |
How can you just decide to kill someone all because you want to steal from him...they should be killed too. |
Despite a passionate denial from former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has continued to accuse her of wrongdoing. Oshiomhole had earlier accused Okonjo-Iweala of spending $2.1billion from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) without authorization. The former minister however termed it as one of many attempts to tarnish her name. In response, Oshiomhole accused Okonjo-Iweala of ‘playing around with statistics,’ and asked her to explain the whereabouts of the $4.1 billion she presented in her last report. The governor made the call on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, during a Channels TV programme on the state of the economy. Oshiomhole said: “The decision to take money from the Excess Crude Account, if she had the power, the law should have been that power is vested in the National Economic Council, NEC. NEC is an institution created by the constitution.” “What she was referring to is her own administrative arrangement. This $2 billion is the last sum, in her last report. She said we have $4.1 billion, she said so orally but it was captured in the minutes, only to come at the last minute to say oh ‘X’ is left.” “If you ask her, what is it that she paid for on the strength of augmentation, that is to say, if they were augmenting, it means that even if there is a drop in price, they will take from the Excess Crude Account to make up the difference.” “If they were doing that, you wouldn’t have the kind of situation we are in today where revenue drops by about 45 percent. I think, with all due respect to Okonjo-Iweala, she knows how to play around, (I don’t want to say, lie) with statistics. I have made this point that she kept open only part of the pages and not the entire book.” “The logic of transparency is that every minister must publish in full what is accruing to the Federation Account, month to month, and what is distributed to whom. What she has been publishing is what went to the Federal Government, each state government and local governments.” “But she has never published simultaneously what accrued during the period, out of which this said sum was distributed so that you can get the net, what was distributed from all that was collected and see what is left in the excess crude. Now you can see her changing the goal post.” “Okonjo-Iweala was a member of the National Economic Council. I was a member. I had asked her and I am on record as asking her, don’t give us verbal report on matters of Federation Account, give us written report.” Okonjo-Iweala left the position of Finance Minister after the expiration of former President, Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure on May 29. http://pulse.ng/local/oshiomhole-governor-accuses-okonjo-iweala-of-playing-around-id3929383.html

Operatives of the Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, Lagos State, have arrested a five-man gang for allegedly strangling a cab driver, Sonye Chukwudi, aka Zack Friday. PUNCH Metro learnt that the robbers ─ Anthony Toms (20), Godwin Francis (25), Michael Inyang (21), Evidence David (22), Etuk Tony (23) ─ tricked the 32-year-old to the Ransome Kuti Gardens, Anthony Village, thinking he had a lot of money. They were said to have bound him hands and feet before strangling him, only to discover he had only his phone and N4,750 on him. Our correspondent was told that the suspects hid the corpse in the gardens. They were about escaping in the victim’s white Mercedes Benz E320 saloon car, when a team of policemen, acting on a tip-off, apprehended them. The incident happened on Sunday around 9pm. A police source said the suspects thought Chukwudi was rich because of his car which he usually parked around the Ikeja GRA for hire service. He said, “They were four that planned the crime. Toms was their informant. He told them the man was rich. “He told Chukwudi that he had a job for him. He said the man would carry some flowers for a customer from Anthony Village to Obanikoro.” It was learnt that Toms, who hails from Cross River State, also arranged with another friend to drive the victim’s car after it had been stolen. A police source said the man, who was to drive Chukwudi’s car, alerted the police to the operation. The policemen reportedly trailed him to the scene. PUNCH Metro gathered that around 9pm, the victim drove into the gardens and parked his car facing the Gbagada Expressway. It was gathered that Toms began to load some bouquet of flowers into the booth of the car. A source said, “Toms called the victim to assist him. As he stepped out of the car, other members came out of their hiding place and hit him in the head with a plank. “They bound his legs and hands and used his clothes to cover his mouth. They then strangled him.” Our correspondent was told that the suspects ransacked the deceased’s pocket and found his phone and N4,750. “Soon after, they called their hired driver to pick them because none of them could drive. “As soon as the driver got to the place, the police surrounded the suspects,” the source said. Our correspondent was told that the police were forced to open fire on two of the gang members who attempted to escape. They sustained gunshot injuries in the legs. The police were said to have found the victim’s corpse hidden in the gardens and covered with flowers. Our correspondent was told that Chukwudi lived alone in the Egbeda area of Lagos, while his wife and four children lived in their hometown in Imo State. It was learnt that none of the suspects had their relatives in Lagos as they came from Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa and Anambra states. The prime suspect, Toms, however told our correspondent he never meant to kill the victim. He said, “I am a gardener. I work in that garden at Anthony. I met the man about two years ago. “That day, I just wanted to collect the money and steal his car, which we estimated at about N2m. He struggled with us and died in the process.” When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said he would call back. But he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report. But a police source said the men were arraigned on Wednesday before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court. They were said to have been remanded pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/robbers-strangle-driver-in-lagos-gardens/

Residents of Anambra State woke up on Wednesday to another round of fuel scarcity due to the closure of most filling stations in protest over what they described as high levies imposed on them by the state government. As a consequence, motorists and other users of petrol resorted to buying the product from black marketers for as much as N500 per litre. A petroleum products’ marketer, Joseph Nwakpadolu, told our correspondent that most of his colleagues closed their retail outlets to protest the heavy levies imposed on them by the state government. He said the marketers had to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the levies and taxes imposed on them by the government. Nwakpadolu said each filling station owner was being asked to pay a huge sum annually, which he said would kill their businesses if implemented. He said the general meeting had become imperative after all efforts to get the government to rescind the plan failed. “We met to discuss the high levies the government has billed our businesses; they are giving us a combined bill of over N500,000 per year exclusive of tax. Our position is that the amount is high and cannot be sustained if we must remain in business,” he added. The Chairman, Petroleum Dealers’ Association of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter, Chief Osita Ofodile, confirmed that the marketers were being asked to pay over N500,000 each, which their colleagues in other states were paying. No government official could be reached for reaction because of the state’s Executive Council meeting that was still going on at 5.30pm when this report was sent. http://www.punchng.com/news/petrol-sells-for-n500-per-litre-in-anambra/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday promised that his administration would give the highest possible priority to the rapid improvement of power supply across the country. According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke while granting audience to officials of CGGC, the Chinese construction company working on the Mambilla Power Project. Adesina quoted the President as saying that it was quite regrettable that power generation in the country had failed to keep pace with national needs over the years. To salvage the situation, Buhari said his administration would ensure that the Mambilla project and other unfinished hydro-power projects in the country were completed expeditiously in order to boost electricity supply in the country. He was quoted as saying, “I am very much interested in Mambilla and other hydro-power projects, not only for the improvement of power, but also for irrigation, as both power and irrigation projects will help to improve the lives of Nigerians. “I am going to ask for details of the Mambilla hydro-power project and others. Very soon, we will get together and redefine the project agreements for faster results.” The Managing Director, CGGC, Mr. Zhang Heng, who led his company’s delegation, was also reported to have told the President that work on the Mambilla project was being delayed by the failure of previous administrations to provide the counterpart funding specified in the agreement with the Chinese government. The CGGC delegation was accompanied to the Presidential Villa by Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State. http://www.punchng.com/news/buhari-promises-improved-power-supply/ |
