The Labour Party has expressed disappointment over the comment credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, that there is a limit to what he can do at the age of 72, describing it as “embarrassing to the country.” This, the party noted, was particularly disheartening because the President made the declaration outside the country. The party challenged the All Progressives Congress to come out clean with the true position on the President’s state of health. The National Chairman of LP, Alhaji Abdukadir Abdulsalam, told journalists on Wednesday evening in Abuja that Buhari’s comment was a disappointment. He said, “This is an expression of failure on his part because when he was campaigning, he gave us the impression that he was hale, healthy and not fragile, and had the capacity, ability and agility to carry out the functions of state as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “This is disappointing to us and Nigerians that before we started and get the whistle blown, Buhari has started to throw in the towel. I think both President Buhari and the APC should tell us the true situation. Is the age of Buhari or both the age and health that have become the problem? “Two months ago, he was telling us he had the capacity to do it, now he is telling us he wish he was younger and that his age will impact on his performance and would not be able to do this job to the satisfaction of Nigerians. This also means Nigerians have been deceived with the concept of change; the statement means we should not be expecting the change they promised as change goes with dynamism, ability to perform, with political willingness and commitment. But if he is complaining now less than a month, where do we go from here?” When asked if it was not enough that Buhari’s appointees would also play key roles in bringing about the change promised by the APC, Abdulsalam said former President Goodluck Jonathan took responsibility, adding that “no one blames his ministers and other appointees, since the buck stops and ends on his table as the leader.” “President Barack Obama takes charge and responsibility for whatever happens to America; the same thing for David Cameron in Britain. All presidents take responsibility for whatever happens. President Buhari and the APC should tell us now before it is too late on what is happening to our President, Baba Buhari,” the LP chairman stressed. http://www.punchng.com/news/presidents-old-age-comment-embarrassing-says-lp/ |

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered First Bank Plc to disclose details of the loan facility it granted the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for the purchase of the two controversial bulletproof BMW cars for the former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, in 2013. Public outcry had followed the purchase when the information leaked that the vehicles had cost N255m. Justice Mohammed Yunusa in his judgment in a suit instituted against the bank by a civil society group, Enough is Enough Nigeria, held that the bank was bound by the provisions of Sections 2(7) and 31 of the Freedom of Information Act to release the details. The judge held that the bank could not hide under the cover of being a private company to deprive the plaintiff of the information. EiE Nigeria had on October 30, 2013, filed the suit under the provisions of the FoI Act, following the bank’s refusal to disclose the information to the group as earlier requested from the bank. First Bank was said to have denied the group’s request without disclosing any reason. Justice Yunusa had on April 28 delivered a similar judgment against Coscharis Motors Limited which supplied the vehicles to the NCAA. The NCAA stated that it had appealed the judgment. The judge in dismissing First Bank’s defence anchored on being a private company noted that the bank did not deny EIE’s claim that it collected levies and taxes on behalf of the government. It ruled that Sections 1(3) and 20 of the FOI Act gave EIE the right to apply to the court to compel the First Bank to disclose the information that it applied for. The court held that the objective of the FOI Act, as stated in its preamble, was to make public records and information more freely available. Justice Yunusa granted the reliefs prayed for by EIE. The court, however, refused to issue an order directing the Attorney-General of the Federation to initiate criminal proceedings against First Bank. But the court asked EIE to write formally to the Attorney-General. The suit was filed on behalf of EIE last January 9 by Mr. Ayodeji Acquah of Media Rights Agenda Network. EIE asked for the original documents including pro-forma invoice(s) from the supplier, request letter from the NCAA and insurance certificate for the assets (the BMW vehicles); rationale for approval including the credit application (or an acceptable alternative) originating the request and details of the approving authority; and offer letter to the NCAA stating the terms and conditions of the loan facility. http://www.punchng.com/news/oduah-firstbank-ordered-to-disclose-bulletproof-cars-loan-details/

Smoking in this part of the world is considered a sign of irresponsibility. Men who smoke are sometimes looked upon as being part of a robbery gang, cultism and probably as people that cannot maintain a relationship or a marital home. Ladies, would you date or marry a man that smokes. Please share your views or experience. |

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Bode George has said that the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu has been politically circumcised. George also said that the brand of politics Tinubu practises is “very primitive and dictatorial.” The PDP chieftain made the comments while speaking on the National Assembly leadership crisis during a recent interview with Punch. Excerpts below: The National Assembly election of June 9 was the most controversial in the history of Nigeria. How do you rate the outcome? To me, it shows that our democracy is still evolving. Like the saying goes, rolling stones gather no moss and the way Asiwaju Bola Tinubu plays his politics is very primitive and dictatorial. Nigeria has moved away from the politics of the 1960s. According to the PDP style, the President, the Vice-President, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the National Chairman of the party must reflect these six geopolitical zones. But Bisi Akande and other All Progressives Congress leaders came out to say that they did not believe in zoning. I thought they came from another planet when I heard this. Akande must be naive about the diversity of Nigeria. They brought their own concept to play at the national level and I am happy that they were given a political circumcision. The APC won the presidential election through a coalition between the North and the South-West. Don’t you think that if Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s influence wanes, it might spell danger for the Yoruba interest? Tinubu is not a selfless leader. All he has done is to remain in his cocoon in Lagos. What is his national value? He has become powerful and that was why he was able to determine who becomes governor and who emerges the Speaker of the House of Assembly. He wanted to take that system to the national level but failed. What was he going to bring to the South-West? The PDP is still very strong in the South-West. If Tinubu thinks he has full control of the Yoruba race, then he is a joker and he doesn’t know the history of the Yoruba people. I am an irredentist Yoruba man and I have no apologies for that. In our culture, we are taught to only take that which belongs to us and not take another man’s property. But the Yoruba were not in the scheme of things in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. In the last parliament, Tinubu teamed up with the North-West and robbed the Yoruba people of the speakership position. He told his boys in the Action Congress of Nigeria to vote for Aminu Tambuwal and that was how Tambuwal became Speaker. Therefore, in the distribution of the topmost positions across the geopolitical zones, we did not have anything. Hence, Tinubu is drinking the soup that he prepared and that is what he deserves. The APC is a merger and Tinubu nominated the Vice-President and the national chairman and yet wants to pick the Speaker and the Senate President. Is Nigeria practising a dictatorship or a democracy? The APC wants to discipline Senate President Bukola Saraki and the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, for going against the will of the party. Will the PDP woo them or accept them if they defect? Yes, of course. A political party is like a police station, we never shut our doors. If you go to a police station at midnight, you will find a policeman on duty. Any political party that closes its doors to politicians is a cult, not a political party. We will open our doors to anybody that wants to join as long as they live according to the law and the constitution of the party. When we were screaming about the Tambuwal issue, Tinubu was rejoicing, he thought he was smart. He forgot the saying that what you do today will have consequences tomorrow. Must they always have their way? Haven’t they been manipulating the system all this while? Tinubu should not seek to make himself too powerful; if not, the APC will die the moment he dies. Tinubu is surrounded by those who cannot tell him the truth, including Akande. But Tinubu was able to bring the Yoruba to the centre of national politics which Awolowo failed to do. Tinubu did that for his selfish interest but he has now been given political circumcision. The PDP brought (Chief Olusegun) Obasanjo, a Yoruba man, to the centre and then brought the Yoruba to the mainstream again in 2003 when we won all the states in the South-West except Lagos. I was Vice Chairman (South-West PDP) at the time. Any house that is built on sand cannot last. They haven’t been in power for up to a month and you can see what is happening. http://pulse.ng/politics/bode-george-tinubu-has-been-politically-circumcised-pdp-chieftain-says-id3862881.html
