The average time to finish medical school in Nigeria from year 1 is 7 years. (ASUU, NMA, ARD, JOHESU strike inclusive) Housemanship is compulsory to be eligible for the MBBS degree. In other words, you cannot have MBBS without housemanship. Totals - 8 it 9 years, depending on how fast you get a place to do housemanship. You will go for youth service to be eligible for permanent registration. Total - 9 or 10 years. Let's now add 5 years (ASUU strike inclusive)of undergraduate education in Anatomy/Biochemistry/Physiology/Microbiology etc We're not ready for such policies. I for don finish school since May, now it's next year. Because we don't have an educational system that works. It doesn't breed maturity. You'll end up having frustrated doctors that have been wearied by unecessary length of training. |
Vcojuro:I am the least of my brethren. Happy Sunday ![]() |
jargo89:You're biased in my opinion. I've noticed that utme candidates have a smoother medical school journey than those that have had a first degree. It doesn't mean they are immune from issues. First degree students usually feel they've seen it all. Believe me, that mentality is counterproductive. it's the same mentality repeat students have when repeating a class- seeing it all. And that's why they keep having issues. Medical school training is enough to instill the foundation of maturity. It's not just about passing exams. Those that know, know. Happy Sunday ![]() |
The last thing medical and dental students should do is create rivalry among themselves for any reason. Be grateful you have an opportunity to be useful to humanity and yourself, irrespective of where it is done. Few years into the system you'll realize the challenges facing the Nigerian doctor is enormous. The wahala plenty. One post would not be enough to enumerate the issues. The least we can do for ourselves is to be united and sustain a common interest so that the profession will be preserved. We're very backward in this place. The masses don't like you. They only like you when they are ill, and you're bound by oath to help them. If you're make any mistake, nobody would want to know whether you are Harvard or ANSU, they will stone you with their words. We need to protect our interest collectively, and it should be fostered at the level of our medical training so we maintain the tempo when we're done. The future of healthcare in this country lies in your hands. A lot of people don't care( including your patients) but they would blame you if something goes wrong. Let's just try not to allow the little differences outweigh the higher purpose. |
Khan1993:The exam was for Nigerian citizens who graduated from medical schools abroad in order to gain licensure to practice in Nigeria. |
smartdave1:There's no difference. |
Thewhizzkid1:It's funny I don't even know the author of one of my preferred physiology texts. If she authors brs then she'd be good. I must say I'm glad to see a paradigm shift from the regular Guyton, Sembulimgam and Ganong to textbooks that can achieve the same purpose even far better. |
Bush2013:Vcojuro isn't wrong. As at 2013, I was supposed to finish by May, 2015. But we've had a lot of internal strikes (NMA, ARD, JOHESU ) that has consumed a cumulative period of 9 months in the last 2 years. So I'm still a final year baby boy. I'll be done in a couple of months, say 6 or 7. congrats on ur admission. More synovial fluid to your joints. |
Thewhizzkid1:I don't know Costanzo. Is he a Nigerian? |
topsonkay:Fox is good. Use it with NMS and you won't need any Guyton or Sembulimgam. |
topsonkay:You're seeking my personal opinion. I don't think any of them is better. Guyton - too voluminous Sembulimgam - better than Guyton by being straight to the point. Very fluid in describing mechanisms. But you asked for my personal opinion ![]() Don't you people have Fox Physiology? |
DrLazDevitan:Ganong is good. I personally didn't like it for obvious reasons. It is too clinical that u may be tempted astray off the important details. |

If this is what's inspiring you, I'm sorry you have a long way to go. You will forever walk in their shadow. Which most upcoming musicians are doing already. How is it down there? ![]() |
Allow him to grow balls. Don't help him out. He'll come around someday. |
vivypretty:I hope you would say the same if a married man were to do the cherishing. |
cornflakes:He was already a resident in psychiatry for about a year. He definitely had contacts and built relationships. Those factors come in handy in getting placements. |
Pzone:@bolded what are your thoughts on it? What other options do you think are worthwhile? Good evening. |
bayonekind: prelinctus:Usually I don't call people out on public forums. But I have to do this for this public show of ignorance. Yes the Nigerian Medical system may be nothing to write home about. But in the case of this burns ,both of you are totally wrong. I am more than 100% sure that this man died due to the compilations of his burns. Burns is a very tricky case. You who probably knows nothing about it thinks it's the cosmetic skin erosion that is the primary problem. But you forget that at the scene of the incident this man must have probably inhaled toxic concentrations of carbon monoxide that would have started an acute respiratory system failure. This man, at the site of the incident not related to any medical intervention or the failure of it, was already predisposed to acute renal failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, toxic pnemonitis, toxic levels of gases etc. Finally, and most importantly, this man is at severe risk of sepsis. I'm very sure that's what killed him. With increased resistance to antimicrobials and the ineffective aseptic protocol already damaging the health system, this man is one of the least persons you would expect to survive. Severe second degree burns, high risk of overwhelming sepsis with other concordant complications. Please give the health workers a break on this one. They're not miracle workers. |
There are some lessons you will never learn, and even if you were told would not give it the same magnitude of importance.... Till you experience it first hand. Experience may not be the best teacher. But forget, there's nothing like it. |
I don't know what it would take Nigerians to mind their business. |
Talk is cheap. Oya do. wetin you talk, problem. You think it's by shouting change everywhere. |
Boobs had fallen before she even began to make millions. This world is not my home. |
medschoolguy:how do you explain the quoted below ? it's an excerpt from the original question. After the episode, she reduced her dose yet episodes of hyperglycemia still occurred. |
JERIZO:Eksu is unaccredited. Your school is partially accredited. You have to do a lot of fact finding before you jump ship. Growing medical schools have their teething issues. But fact finding first. |
charleymed:Negative marking is the bane of medical education in Nigeria. The exam I wrote 2 days ago, the rule is +1/-1. You have one question correct - 1 mark You have another one wrong - minus 1 mark. And that's how it is in a lot of other medical schools. This method of assessing students is counter productive. But we can't complain. |
medschoolguy:1) Endotoxin mediated release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators 5) Type 1 DM? |
