naughtylagosguy: Good day Doctors,Light flashes in your eyes may not mean that something serious is wrong. But to rule out the likelihood of a serious ailment you need to have your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist. |

sisiafrika: Front page things. @dreaming@ oh hey! Wat do u guys think about architecture? For a developing country like Nigeria, Architects occupy a central position. For every family, business, industry, and government that needs a design, an architect is involved. With a degree and professional expertise gotten through years of experience, an architect well-honed in his/her design skills is set out for: - Industrial Design - Federal and State Government Ministry of Works - Housing - Highway and Civil Construction - Consultancy. Most Nigerian families, sooner or later, would need an Architect. |
Sadia1992: Hi mr lomaxx. Im an art stdnt wit a worst mathematical background although my mission bfr i movd to art clas was dat i want to study law bt wen i get to ss2 my broda choosd economics 4 me 2 study an av fal in lov wit d course an afta i sat 4 dis year jamb my score was so low espcialy in math.sud i continue aimin to study economics or i sud chang to law..tnx in anticipationI want to start by saying that there is always room for improvement. There is no hard and fast rule that says if you didn't do well in Mathematics last year, you wouldn't do well this year. The difference between last year and this year or between this year and next year would depend on the choices you are willing to make, the hours you're willing to devote to Mathematics and the passion with which you'll devote to pursing what you're set out for. Let me challenge you with my story. I was an Arts student from the onset. I spent SS1 to SS3 doing Arts subjects. I started developing a flair for science subjects in SS2- which was seemingly late, but I didn't mind. I studied Science subjects during my spare time with WAEC syllabus and some textbooks I bought. There was no science teacher to guide me. Just after SS2, I decided to attempt Nov/Dec WASSCE in Science and Arts subjects. I dealt a perfect strike to Arts subjects, I had a C5 in Physics, with an E8 in Chemistry(SS2). In SS3, I learnt from my pitfalls and gave the examination another try after I was done with May/June WASSCE in Arts. I had all distinctions - the reason I'm enjoying scholarships many students dream of. Someone offered to sponsor me in University by just seeing my O'levels. It was that good. I wasn't satisfied with O levels. I went on to do Cambridge A levels in Sciences. So my brother, you can either sit there to sulk and bemoan your Mathematics predicament or you can fix the errors while you still can. Strive to improve in Mathematics. Get UTME syllabus, a good textbook, a notebook, and UTME past questions. Give yourself a deadline and go over the syllabus at least twice. Solve as much as you can for each topic. The key to knowing Mathematics is frequent solving. If you have questions, meet people who are better to help explain. By all means, strive to develop yourself. You'll need this attitude when you're out there chasing your career path. As for law, do it if you want to. Are you flexible enough to accommodate the consequences of a chosen career path?? Think through it properly and make a choice. When you make a choice, defend it. Remember, there's always room for improvement. |
thankyouJesus: thank you Sir. I would have love math/physics but no south west uni offer that. Am a science student so math/econ is out (my potential- ''background''), not too good in statistics (my strenght is pure math). Is there any professional course(s) I should watch out for? Or better still, your advice .First, you need to have options of where you would direct your professional brainstorming strength after graduation. Then do a research on what it takes, and how you can be above the next Mathematics graduate seeking the same opportunity. This is when you'll have an idea of professional courses to do. Assuming you want to go into Finance, tailor your focus into that area and research on sub-areas that are relevant to the industry you desire. Go to LinkedIn and look at professional profiles of folks who have made similar choices in the past, and research on how you can have an edge. You could build a prototype of your would-be CV with this information as your guide. Do this and you're tailor-made for excellence. |
thankyouJesus: Good afternoon Dr Lomaxx. You are enlighten and knowledgeable. I have these questions please.Question 1, 3 and 5 are related, so I'll handle it like a bolus. Mathematics is an excellent course choice in the university. It makes you think analytically and many industries need analytical thinkers. That's the natural edge you have with a degree in mathematics. Like I will always say, the prospects in any field is defined by the individual involved. With a degree mathematics, prospects are taken to another level entirely. You could go into Finance(Quantitative Finance, Operations Research, Actuarial Finance etc), IT, Consultancy, Management, Economics etc. You could work as a financial analyst, credit analyst, or a programmer. A mathematics degree affords you a versatile career choice in these areas. All you need to do is pick an area you have interest in and start working towards it from day 1. You could work basically anywhere. All you need to do is know the industry you're set out for and develop the relevant skills & qualifications required. 2) I know a friend that studied Applied Mathematics in one of the state universities, graduated with a 2.2, got some IT certifications and landed a job with Nokia one year after NYSC. A brother to one of my friends graduated with a 4.49 in one of the federal universities. He's currently doing a PhD in Quantitative Finance in the US. There are a lot of success stories with Mathematics out there. You need to pattern your steps from Day1. Know what you want and set out for it. 4) There are a couple of good schools that offer the subject. I would advise you don't study Mathematics in isolation. You could do Maths&Statistics, Maths&Economics. It gives you a natural edge. Good luck. |
alentyno: Seriously @Lomaxx..... A1 in math? Never liked biology? Please why did you choose medicine?Well...that's it. We make our choices. |
Suresh08: Good day dr Lomaxx.Good morning. I didn't intend to reply your post this late. I was banned by Antispambot for a couple of days. I want to start by saying that you should not hate any subject. You may love some more than others, but don't hate it. When you don't hate a subject, you will have an innate desire to improve, no matter what. Every career is rewarding. What it depends on is who is making the career choice. There is no inherent prospect in any career- the individual involved defines the prospects. If you are proactive, smart, willing to learn and well-oriented, you're set out to succeed. Deciding between medicine and engineering should be a choice you make and you're ready to defend. I never liked biology from the onset. Maths was my thing. I had an A1 in WASSCE in Mathematics, I was perfect in Calculus but I made a medicine choice, and I also knew I had to like biology. But till date, I don't like it as much as I like mathematics. I made a medicine choice and I'm defending it. If I made an engineering choice, I would have defended it as well. Don't base your career choice on subject preference, your attitude towards them might change in the future. Choose a career because it is what interests you and it's what you are willing to do. Choose a path, weigh the pros and cons and make a perfect strike. As for writing JAMB last year and this year and not making it, I hope you learnt lessons. One important thing you shouldn't do is waste time. At the end what is important is being the best in whatever you're doing and doing it with the right attitude and packaging. If I wrote jamb the first year for medicine, and didn't make it, I would have done something else. I believe I can fit into any career path and industry- thats because I'm flexible to circumstances. I know a couple of my friends who wrote jamb for a couple of years for medicine and finally had it. To them, medicine was everything. I believe with your personality mix, you'd make a good engineer. Remember it's not what you do, but how well you do what you do. About the girls, I don't know if I'm just lucky or if it's me. When you're focused in what you're doing primarily, every other thing will fall in place. Maintain a primary focus, socialize when necessary and life will fill in the lacunae. I don't believe you should worry yourself about girls. They'll come when they will. The most important thing is to maintain a primary focus. And about sex, the same applies. Maintain a focus, and life will happen when it will/should. |

Centrifuge4: Who a man is wil always reflect in woteva he does. Lomaxx has more than enough words in his ornate amoury; I dnt tink it is gud for him to hide this ability.Who a man is will always reflect in whatever he does. Perfectly said. |
Centrifuge4: I don't seem to be ready (phase 1 acordin to u) but I place mysev on high alert to find a gud woman which [seems] nonexistent. The Holy Book says "Seek and ye shall find". Well, it usually doesn't work like that. The good ones come when you're not looking. Every time I try to date, ladies discourage me with monetary demand(even those wit financialy better parents still demand 4 dis). It's a pity really. But then you'd get around it. Above all, I always get d motive behind a girl sayin 'yes' to me -- which is most of the time to get helps(financial or academic).Well, you'll still get around it. |
