BENIN CITY — THE Edo State Police Command, yesterday, paraded 26 suspected criminals including a pastor identified as Philips Ogbebor, alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a 20-year-old male member of his church(names withheld). After the act, the pastor allegedly threatened to kill his victim if he disclosed the act to the public. Speaking toVanguard, Pastor Ogbebor simply said: “God will judge, go and talk to others” and kept on mumbling. But his victim narrated his ordeal: “I told him I have never done this since I grew up, but he insisted. It was painful and I told him I will not allow it again. So after the second attempt, I told him Iwill expose the act. He then administered an oath on me, saying if Iever told any one, I will die. “He carried sand and olive oil and poured them on my head, then he wore black garment, saying I will die if I ever leaked the secret. He killed a black fowl and gave me the liver and gizzard to eat at about 2 a.m., threatening that if I ever said it out, I will die like the fowl. “But when I realised that it is a sin, I met a man of God to pray for me that God should forgive me and that I am ready to expose it since he forced me. There after I went to the church and told the congregation about the act. When he heard it, he threatened me bysending his younger brother and members of his gang after me. Since then I have been running.” Other suspects paraded The state Police Commissioner, Folusho Adebanjo, explained that among the suspects were two suspected cultists believed to have participated in the recent rival cult clash in the state and seven suspected pipeline vandals and operators of illegal refineries. Others were two suspected robbers, from whom a Toyota Camry car they stole at gunpoint in Kaduna State was recovered; a suspect who was alleged to have demanded N20 million ransom from one Joseph with death threats and three others whom the police boss said were in possession of firearms without licence were also paraded. There was also an alleged case of rape against two suspects who were said to have dragged a 20-year-old female victim into the bush. He also paraded five persons including a middle aged woman all from Ojah, Akoko-Edo Local Government council accused of burning to death, one Funmi Abiodun on allegation of being a witch responsible for the death of a relation. According to him, “the war against criminality is relentlessly being waged against men of the underworld. The command is not leaving any stone unturned regarding crime and criminality in Edo State. “This man who claimed to be a pastor defiled a young person. Another thing that is so common here and I don’t know why this defilement issue is so prevalent. “I wonder if there is something about it. You see very old men defiling younggirls who are five years, two years, andso on. We are not going to tolerate thisand cases of rape are also increasing too but we will go all out to make sure that they are convicted.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/police-parade-gay-pastor-for-alleged-rape-of-member/

A cleric that described himself as the chairman of bishops in Rivers State, Bishop Chibuike Nwabueze, has been arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl and sponsoring the abortion of the baby. The incident was said to have occurred at about 2p.m on April 29, atCalvary Army Ministry in Rumuoji Eneka, in Obio/Akpor Local GovermentArea of the state. The cleric allegedly admitted that he had a carnal knowledge of the victim (name withheld), but attributed the crime to a set-up by his enemies. Bishop Nwabueze, who was paraded yesterday, at the Rivers State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Port Harcourt, told journalists that anyone could fall victim under manipulation. He alleged that it was his fellow bishop and the host where he went tominister as a guest preacher that planned the incident because there had been a tussle for the chairmanship seat of the communion of bishops. “We have different colleges of bishops. I am the chairman of Communion of Bishops in Rivers State. Well, what actually happened was a set up. It was set up by my enemies. I have so many people who are my enemies. The man who is in charge of where I went to minister is my enemy. He is the person that set me up. “He invited me to his church for a programme, claiming to be my friend and after the programme, he set me up because of what we were dragging. We are in a tussle for chairmanship of the communion and that was why he set me up.” He told newsmen that it was after praying for the girl in his office on thefateful day that she allegedly seduced him into having sex with her, pointing out that he did not rape her. I was surprised when I saw her pullingoff her clothes . But, before you knew it, I had carnal knowledge of her. Thatis the truth of the matter. “She laughed at me and said ‘are you angry? I told her that I did not know what she had hypnotised me for and she said I should not bother. I was so angry that I called some of my pastorsand made a confession that I did not know what happened.” The suspect maintained that if he raped her as alleged, the girl would have raised the alarm, because many people were within the church premises. According to him, it was after a monththat the victim’s father called him on phone, saying that his daughter was pregnant. Though, the cleric admitted funding the victim’s laboratory test and other hospital bills, he stressed that it was the girl’s father that insisted on abortion, adding that he took her to aclinic, where it was confirmed that thevictim had aborted the child. Meanwhile, the police have advised parents to carefully choose where their children worship and be wary ofsome clergies. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of SCID, Samuel Okaula, whoparaded the bishop and a male nurse, said the arrest of Bishop Nwabueze should serve as a deterrent to other so-called clerics.http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/bishop-rapes-15-year-old-girl-in-port-harcourt/ |
•Army officer accused of beating, crippling NYSC member •Family screams blue murder, calls for probe By SEYE OJO In November 2012, Miss Mercy Okpithereported to the Batch ‘C’ Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State. Her joyknew no bounds, as she looked forward to the opportunity to serve Nigeria for one year. The 2011 graduate of Public Administration from the Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, voluntarily joined the Dance Troupe on the camp. Like Janet Jackson in her heyday, she displayed a high level of dexterity as she moved her feet and body rhythmically to music. After the camping exercise, she was posted to the Anambra South Local Government area, and she continued as a member of the Dance Troupe. But little did Mercy know that four months later, fate would have no mercy on her. Mercy, it was gathered, was severely beaten up by the Camp Commandant at the NYSC Orientation Camp, one Captain S.O. Beke, about 11:00p.m on Monday, March 18, this year. She allegedly fainted and was rushed to the camp clinic. The following day, shewas transferred to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka. Atthe hospital, she was diagnosed with dislocation of coccyx, a small triangular bone at the base of the spinal column. The hospital further referred her to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for special attention. It was gathered that she might be flownabroad for surgery. But what could have led to the alleged brutalisation? This correspondent visited Mercy in her Lagos home. As she lay down on a couch in their living room, the young lady writhed in pains, even as she struggled to answer the reporter’s questions. Her words: “When the Batch A corps members were in the Orientation Camp in March, this year, the NYSC officials invited members of the Dance Troupe to the camp to teach the new corps members how to dance. We got to the camp in the evening of Sunday, March 17. We were 15 all together; 11 boys and four girls. “We girls were not meant tostay together in the same room with the boys. But we had to because therewas no vacant room. The following morning, the NYSC State Coordinator gave a directive that a separate room should be given to the girls. But the officials could not find a vacant room for us. So, they put us in one of the rooms occupied by some Batch ‘A’ female corps members. “We took two mattresses each to the place. There were no bunks. So, we spread the mattresses on the ground. Thereafter, the other three girls slept but I was still awake. I was listening to music onmy phone, using an earpiece. “Around 11:00p.m., some soldiers came into the room. They were both males and females. I felt it was a normal thing because they did the same thing when I was in the camp for orientation exercise in November 2012. Then, I noticed that a female soldier was arguing with one of my friends, Ifedayo Fakehinde. Then, the female soldier forcefully removed one of the mattresses which she slept on. Ifedayo sought to know her offence and the soldier hit her. I quickly rose up and caught her as she was falling. Otherwise, she would have hit her head against the wall. But she sprained her hand. “The incident caused a scene. Many corps members came out and argued with the soldiers. As this was going on, Ifedayo was crying. We calmed her down. Then, the NYSC Schedule Officer came around. He sought to know what happened. As I was explaining what I knew about the incident to him, I heard the voice of the Camp Commandant telling all the corps members to go inside. “Before I finished my explanation, the commandant came and pushed me. I sought to know why he pushed me. But he pushed me again. I told him to stop pushing me because he could not push his sister like that. But he continued until he pushed me to the wall. Then, he kicked me from the ground and I hit the ground with my back. I couldn’t move. Then, I heard other soldiers saying ‘die, die, die’ till I passed out.” As gathered, the Schedule Officer ran probably to call the State Coordinator,Mrs. I.B. Ekpe, when the commandant was purportedly beating the corps member. But Mercy woke up at the camp clinic the following morning with excruciating pains. Later that day, she was transferred to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka. Mr. Solomon Okpithe, Mercy’s father, said an official of the NYSC called him on phone in the afternoon of Tuesday, March 19, telling him that Mercy was involved inan accident and that he should come to Awka immediately. The official, he disclosed, told him to come with somebody who would stayin the teaching hospital to take care of Mercy. When he got to the hospital with his wife at about 12:30p.m the following day, they were shocked to hear that she was brutalised by the camp commandant. Okpithe said the first thing that came to his mind was how to save his daughter’s life. He sought to see the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the teaching hospitalbut could not see him until about 7:00p.m when he came out from the theatre. “I asked the CMD about my daughter’s condition, but he said the hospital could not handle it and he would refer her to Enugu. I told him that I was from Lagos and asked if he could refer her to any hospital in Lagos. Then, he said he would refer her to Igbobi. Immediately, he instructed thedoctor that was in charge to write theletter. “On Thursday morning, we were at Igbobi. The doctors at the hospital tried but the sad thing is that they told us they could not handle it too. They said it’s not just an orthopaedic case but something that has to do with the spine. They treated her and asked us to take her home. Then, theygave an appointment,” he said. On the next appointment day, according to Okpithe, the hospital said the first option, which was the treatment by orthopaedic doctors, had failed. “They said they were taking another option now and if it fails, the third option would be a surgery.” Okpithe, who has since beenresponsible for his daughter’s hospitalbills, disclosed that Mrs. Ekpe promised the family that NYSC would reinburse whatever amount spent on the treatment, adding that Ekpe said she had informed the national secretariat of NYSC in Abuja about the development and had also written a letter to the NYSC in Lagos State about the incident. “I have received calls from one Mrs. Daniel from the NYSC Office, Lagos, telling me I should accept their sympathy on my daughter. But on the other hand, Mrs Ekpe never stated the cause of the dislocation. I know she’s doing that to protect the officer.” Okpithe, an engineer, urged the Chief of Army Staff to ensure proper reform of the army, especially those in chargeof NYSC. He also advised the Federal Government to provide necessary items for corps members on the camp. The issue of inadequate mattresses, hesaid, caused the problem. When contacted on phone to react to the claims, Captain Beke neither confirmed nor denied the incident. He only asked if the story would be published in Daily Sun, and when the reporter answered in the affirmative, the officer paused and said he would call back. But he never did. Further efforts to reach him failed as the phone was switched off. When the reporter was eventually through to him, Captain Beke directedthe correspondent to contact NYSC for any comment. “I am not NYSC,” he asserted.http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/no-mercy-for-mercy/

National Teachers’ Institute, NTI, has said that about 80 percent of all schoolteachers in most states in the north were not qualified for the job. By Luka Binniyat KADUNA — National Teachers’ Institute, NTI, has said that about 80 percent of all school teachers in most states in the north were not qualified for the job. Director-General of the Institute, Dr. Aminu Sharehu, said this yesterday in Zaria, Kaduna State, at a national conference on Quality Assurance and Control in Teacher Education as a Tool for Achieving Millennium Development Goals, organised by Federal College of Education, Zaria. However, Governor Muhktar Yero of Kaduna State, who also spoke on the occasion, said that only 50 percent of the teachers in his state were not qualified and not 80. Sharehu said: “Over 80 percent of teachers in the North are under-qualified because there is no motivation. “You need to train and retrain teachers because the National Certificate in Education, NCE, is just a start point. In the teaching profession,we do not have learned people, but learning people because we believe that there is no end to learning. “So it is only lawyers that are proudly calling themselves learned. As for what are really responsible for poor qualification of teachers in the north, Iwill keep that for another day. “But there is need for increase in teachers’ salary and continuous increase in their remuneration to make them better teachers.” Governor Yero, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Mohammed Usman, said: “The Federal Ministry of Education stipulates that the minimum teaching qualification in our schools should be NCE. “But majority of teachers we have today in the system are not NCE holders. So how can they qualify to teach the new curriculum? “As a measure to improve education in the state, Governor Muhktar Yero has given an approval to recruit 1,800 teachers. “This time around, we will make sure that for anybody to be recruited, he must be qualified. We will not allow every Dick and Harry to become a teacher. This is a noble profession. It’s 50%, says govt “When I came on board as the Commissioner for Education in KadunaState, I discovered that 50 percent of the teachers, particularly the primary school teachers are under qualified. There is no way they can do the job very well. “I had to give them a time frame of five years within which to upgrade themselves and become NCE holders. “There are teachers in Kaduna that, for the past 20 years, have never attended any education programme. What do you think of such teachers? “As a teacher you need to attend programmes to enhance your capacityand scale up your knowledge. “If you do not do that, you are left behind because the world is changing. We had to flush out close to1,840 teachers within the system because of fake certificates.”http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/80-of-teachers-in-north-unqualified-nti/ |
