DeepSight: + Even though I have long known of this, I am partial to leaving people to freely pronounce as they see fit especially where the spelling lends itself to the pronunciation they choose and in light of the fact that English is a foreign language to most people in this part of the world.
No Frenchman for example goes about telling an Englishman that the correct pronunciation for Paris is Pari. This little example goes to show that language is dynamic and malleable and people are in fact entitled to mold it to suit themselves - and this is why we have many distinctions between written and spoken British English and American English. The Americans spoke and wrote it as they felt comfortable and it became standard, accepted and right for them.
Left to me, I would change the spelling of something like "Elephant" to "Elifant" for example, and remove letters which are silent in the pronunciation of certain words such as the "p" in psychology and the "b" in debt. Yeah English is a bàstèrd child so it would actually make sense to simplify it and make the rules much less cumbersome. |

It’s pronounced GREN Itch and not Green ITCH. The emphasis is also on the first syllable GREN. Thank you. Corrected it. |

In Primary school we are taught about time zones and we learn that the centre line for division between West and East is the Greenwich Mean Time or GMT. However you hear people pronounce Greenwich as Green Which or Witch but this is WRONG! It ought to be pronounced as GREN itch.
To be fair I only learnt of this recently and wanted to share with my fellow mispronouncers.

Daejumong: Dear Pastor Adeboye,
With deep respect, I seek clarity on a troubling matter: Why is a payment of ₦40,000 required to attend a special program with you?
• Who initiated this practice? • What influenced your decision? • Who are the advisers behind this move? • How would the late Rev. Akindayomi feel about this shift? • What is happening to the church he entrusted to your care?
Have we reached a point where access to spiritual leadership now carries a price tag? Has reverence for God’s servant turned into something resembling worship?
Many of us are grieved not out of rebellion, but out of love for the church and a longing for transparency. Please help us understand.
Matthew 10:8 (NIV) “Freely you have received; freely give.”

Anyway, na una 2 problem. Where did I make such a complaint? |

DeepSight: + What made you contemplate that. Certain aspects about human history and religious history in particular. It seems the earliest anthropomorphic religions were female oriented but as time went on the patriarchy took over and drove the bus the other way. I suspect that the ancient mothers of those days saw how weak the baby boys were and decided to breed a "hunter-warrior" class with the male children to ensure their survival but that is what grew into the patriarchy and sort of skewed the history. Once again this is all my conjecture based on my own interpretation of certain facts. It's my own myth making. LoLz. |

Even at that is it the 2yr old who will run up and down looking for pastors? No. It is the mama who does it of which we are all wondering why. And that is where you see she knows something we don't know especially as it is a serious mark of wrongdoing for a mother to birth an unhealthy child. And go and check you would never see a virgin birth an unhealthy child. How many virgins do you know bore children without sexual intercourse? |

The myth only bears a little credence in terms of brawn, and that even, it must be said, is a thing whose time is well past. I suspect the brawn was breed into the male population to increase survivability but that's just my own conjecture. |

Dpsychologist: Source by Dpsychologist The appellation was just a way to subjugate women. Right from before conception women are already geared to withstand more stress. The XX sperms are more resilient than the XY sperms. Female embryos and newborns withstand more stress than male ones. Adult female bodies withstand so much stress from the reproductive process and still manage to outlast men in terms of longevity. Whoever wrote that phrase did so ignorantly. |

Akinpedia: Good day, Great Nairalanders.
I’ve been observing a recurring pattern in our society that I find both fascinating and deeply worrying. We live in a country where a man will be diagnosed with a stage 2 ailment by a specialist with 30 years of experience, but he will ignore the prescription and head straight to a prayer mountain because his Pastor said, 'It is a spiritual attack.
We often encounter individuals facing serious legal challenges who, instead of immediately seeking the assistance of a skilled and experienced lawyer, choose to 'sow a seed' in hopes of a miracle resolving their problems. This approach, relying on chance or faith alone, often delays the necessary professional help that could effectively address their legal issues and lead to a favorable outcome.
Why is this the case? I’ve identified a few reasons, but I want to hear your thoughts:
The Failure of Systems: Could it be that our hospitals, often perceived as places of healing, have unfortunately become death traps for many? Additionally, is the sluggish pace of our legal system contributing to this widespread sense of frustration and hopelessness? Perhaps this is why so many people find themselves turning to pastors and spiritual leaders, seeking comfort and guidance, because the so-called 'professional' alternatives have repeatedly let them down and failed to provide the support or solutions they desperately need.
The "Hope" Factor: Professionals often deliver the cold, hard truth with blunt clarity (for example, saying, 'You have only 6 months to live'). On the other hand, pastors and spiritual leaders tend to offer comforting words that many want to hear, such as, 'You shall not die but live.' Could this difference simply be a way for people to cope with the harsh realities and difficulties of life? Is hope, in this sense, nothing more than a psychological mechanism designed to help individuals endure and find meaning despite their challenges?
The 'Spiritualization' of Everything: In Nigeria, there is a widespread belief that behind every event, no matter how small or seemingly ordinary—whether it is a village fly buzzing around or a sudden car breakdown—there is a spirit or supernatural force at work. This deep-rooted cultural perspective often leads people to interpret everyday occurrences through a spiritual lens. Given this worldview, one might wonder whether, in the eyes of the average Nigerian, a Pastor who claims to understand and communicate with these spiritual forces is considered more 'qualified' or competent than an Engineer who relies on scientific knowledge and technical expertise to solve practical problems.
Charisma vs. Cold Logic: Pastors tend to be much more empathetic and charismatic in their approach, often connecting deeply with individuals on an emotional level. In contrast, professionals in various fields may adopt a more detached and transactional manner, focusing primarily on efficiency and outcomes rather than personal connection or emotional support. You nailed it especially the last bit. Pastors/religious leaders tug very strongly on the heart strings of their followers so they very emotionally attached to them and it even goes deep when the followers see their religion as a part of their identity which extends to their religious leaders. My Question to You: Is this total trust in religious leaders the reason why we aren't progressing as a nation? Or is the Pastor simply filling a gap that the Government and Professionals left wide open?
Let’s take some time to discuss this topic in more detail and explore all the relevant aspects thoroughly. There is no simple answer to this. Many of the factors involved in our epileptic progress are tied together inextricably. |

drstranged: I’m currently in the South East, and normally by late November we would have started feeling harmattan — cooler weather, dry air, dusty breeze, at least some signs.
But now, just a day to Christmas, everywhere is still hot. No harmattan breeze, no dryness, no dusty mornings. It honestly feels more like February or March than December.
This feels very unusual to me. In all my years on earth, I can’t remember a December like this.
Is anyone else experiencing the same thing in their area? Could this be climate change, or is this just one of those rare weather shifts?
Let’s hear your observations. Climate change is real whether you believe it is man made or not. |
