I'm happy that people can see what is happening on this thread.

By the way, have you watched Dave Chapelle 8:46
I watched it the minute it came out on YouTube. I wholeheartedly respect Dave's viewpoint on the matter, still, I must say that I shook my head at some of the points he was trying to make or counter.

I understand that emotions are running high at the moment due to that man's death, but the aftermath has been nothing but pointless protests, riots, anarchy, political pandering and celebrity bunking.

Police brutality affects all races.

The timeline is not linear.

Revisit the scene where The ancient one took Hulk to the cleaners.
It being non-linear creates even worse problems and loopholes. The purpose of the ancient one scene is to reinforce the need for them to return the stones to the past, because the ancient one implied that she needs the time stone to save the world in that time line. Without the time stone, doctor strange wouldn't be able to stop dormamu.

If Thanos doesn't exist in the present, how can he get the stones to disrupt the present timeline.
Duh, if gamora didn't exist in the present, how did she appear in the past and follow Thanus to the present to stop the Avengers?

Or are you trying to tell me that 2014 Thanos will get the stones from the past and travel to the future to redo the snap?
Did you purposely ignore my statement to advance your argument or did it literally fly over your head?

You can't make sense of Endgame's time travel mechanics, they pulled a lot of BS and that's okay in the realm of superhero movies.

I don't have the juice for typing arguments, but answer this question: why the hell is cap' able to remain in a past timeline for so long without altering the events that happen afterwards? And why was he able to meet the same present he left in the same condition he left it having lived out his years in the past? Because that breaks the set rules of their time travel mechanics.

No one can make sense of the craziness of Endgames time travel, the more you think about it, the more elaborately obtuse you find it.

You said endgame threw caution to the wind?
For someone who claim to be well versed in the concept of time travel, how did the logic behind messing with time in endgame fly over your head?

Avengers Endgame has one of the most relatively plausible concept of time travel in Hollywood.
They didn't go back in time to change the present (hello, Xmen: days of the future past), they went back to retrieve the items used to disrupt their present, travel back to the present and use the items to restore the balance in their present (emphasis on this!) then travel back to the past to return the aforementioned items.

Hulk told war machine who suggested travelling back in time to kill baby Thanos that killing him won't change nothing because the present will only become their past and the future will be their present.
Meaning whatever they have to do, has to be done in the present.

Haven't seen any concept of time travel more straightforward than this and I have seen many.
If you think about it, it's kinda flawed.

They traveled back and got the stones, logically, by returning to their present with the stones the whole Thanus incident should never have happened because the stones wouldn't have existed in that timeline.

Also by returning the stones to the exact places they got them should have negated everything they did, because now Thanus could still get the stones; (I know he was snapped out of existence in the present, but he still exists in the past, so he will continue on his quest to save mankind).

Unless the snap also snapped him out of existence in the past, then we have a bigger problem, because they have now altered the course of history and broken the rule of time travel and that should have severe consequences.

You see, Endgame time travel theory was nothing short of underwhelming, basic and poorly carried out, and they even had the temerity to mock "back to the future's" version when their's wasn't any better.

Good time 8.5/10

From the Safdie brothers, the same guys that made the critically acclaimed Uncut Gems. If you loved uncut gems then you'd like this one, just like uncut gems it is set in the ever-bustling city of New York and features a man so down on his luck due to a series of bad decisions that he keeps making more bad decisions and piling up to his impending doom that when shit finally hits the fan, it's no shock that he gets what's coming to him.

It features the same overwhelming music, a stellar performance from the cast, good cinematography, thrills, suspense, ph-uc ups and some stomach biting humour. Unlike uncut gems tho, this one had a positive ending that was actually moving.

The Accused 8/10

An interesting tale about a young woman who got gang-raped in a bar by three men while other men cheered and encouraged her assaulters and how she and her lawyer pushed to prosecute both the culprits and those who cheered. This film features a very graphic and disgusting portrayal of rape, enough to elicit utter disgust from the viewer and I commend the filmmakers for having the balls to even film it and put it in the final cut.

Jodie is a fine actress, she deservedly won the Oscar for best actress for her performance in this picture.

Now, coincidentally Afterwards I watched a south park episode where they parodied the rape scene and the quest for justice in this movie. grin In the episode, the children are distraught because they presumably witnessed the rape of Indiana Jones in the hands of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, so they must overcome their trauma and bring the culprits to book. It was very hilarious and cringe to watch at the same time. cheesy

The invisible man 7.5/10

Ominous at first, but along the way it became ridden with cliches and irresponsibilities that I just totally zoned out. It was enjoying none the less. My main gripe is with the ending, they just failed to explore what psychological effects such traumas and experiences would have on the protagonist, instead, the movie ends with the cliche liberation and smirking like an idiot.

Still very enjoyable and definitely worth the watch. Had some fun and "What The Ph-uc moments".

Lolz, they changed your Ab.oki to Northerners.... Sure, reading the book would make you appreciate the story more, but it'd definitely make you hate on the movie.

The movie failed to capture the whole essence of the book. Trust me, if you pick the book, you ain't stopping till you hit the last page, it was so well written.
Sometimes nairaland feels like a liberal art college. The word Abo.ki isn't even offensive, I believe it means friend. Why censor it, seun?

Half of a yellow sun 6/10

Let's assume that this is truly by all qualifications a Nigerian movie, going by that assumption, I must then admit that this is the best Nigerian movie I have seen based only on its cinematography, acting and scores. Every other aspect was underwhelming and somehow disappointing. There is no doubt there was some quality, but the plot especially felt sluggish and narrow. The characters lost their charisma as the movie progressed and just abandoned any little depth they previously had.

I might finally read the book, maybe it will help me appreciate the story more.

The Abo.kis and Afonjas really did us in. Imagine hating on someone for progressing.

At losprince & abduleez1, you see, any movie hinting "female empowerment, what the men can do, the female folks can do better" message, is very much hyped & sells like wild fire.

I don't know about other tribes, but as for the Igbos, you not having a male heir is akin to you not having a kid at all. Most Igbo men no matter how educated, reverence male kids to their female counterparts.

So Genevieve tries to counter that notion & mentality. She projects the females as strong, ambitious go getters like their male counterparts, and that all they need is the exposure & opportunity. Invariably, the moral of the story is that females are as important as their male counterparts.

Trust me, if the movie had been done in our 100% indigenous language, it would have been very much recognized by the Oscars, not saying it's going to win though.
I would say the female empowerment push was done in a brilliant way, it was subtle and wasn't shoved to the viewers face. In the family, Ada is the first child and went along with her father to the business from a very young age while the brother apparently was the mother's sidekick and choose a career in music, you can also note the father's disappointment with the son all through the movie, so it stands to reason that he groomed Ada for that role.

If she had used mostly Igbo for the film, then the Oscars being ever so woke might have patted her on the thighs with a nomination. But winning will be very far from it.

Gbam, the truth in 3D has been spoken.

Imagine Nigerians letting all hell loose cos it was rejected by Oscar committee, screaming bias and what not. Even some gullible black Americans or probably for publicity joined in support. angry

And the annoying thing is that 75% of them didn't even watch the film. Just based their assumptions on hearsay.
After I saw the movie, I just shook my head at all that controversy. Even back then, it didn't meet the Oscar requirements for that category. Omotola and her cohorts should have known better.

Lion Heart 5/10

Very entertaining, with good Nigerian/Igbo humour to compliment. The acting was very okay, it was kinda refreshing to see all those veterans along with some cameos and pop culture references, they all put out a good performance, from Nnaji to Nkem Owoh (Who arrived with the comedy as usual cheesy) to Pete Edochie being Pete Edochie and Kanayo doing one of of the things he does best (I won't be surprised if his back story involved ritualism and converting his brother's wife grin ) and phyno, who I must confess, showed talent.

Now, the plot was just average. Without the cast, I don't see it getting the buzz it got. On a serious note, if Lion Heart was the movie those responsible saw fit to submit for oscar consideration then I am deeply disappointed. The movie shouldn't even be considered for our local awards, it depended heavily on the cast and nostalgia to carry it. We can do way better than this.
