Education › The Light-absorbing Butterfly Wing by losprince(op): 8:12pm On Jul 30, 2014
In order to reduce mankind's dependence on fossil fuels, scientists are eager to improve the light-harvesting efficiency of solar collectors. "The solution to this problem," said a scientist," may have been...fluttering right in front of our eyes."

CONSIDER: To keep themselves warm during cold weather, butterflies spread their wings in the sun. The wings of some species of swallow tail are remarkably efficient at trapping and absorbing sun light. The insects' secret lies not just in their dark pigment but also in the structure of microscopic, overlapping scales coating their wings. the scales, in turn, contains rows of honey comb like holes separated by inversed V-shaped ridges that funnel light into the holes. This ingenious structure traps incoming sunlight, making the wings extremely black and warming the butterfly with amazing efficiency.

"Butterfly wings may rank among the most delicate structures in mature," says science daily, "but they gave researchers powerful inspiration that doubles the production of hydrogen gas-a green fuel of the future-from water and sunlight." Other promising applications include optical instruments and solar cells.

What do you think ? Did the light-absorbing architecture of the butterfly wing come about by evolution? Or was it designed?

Programming › Re: Nigerian Game Development: What's Happening? by losprince(m): 10:57pm On Jul 27, 2014
Preboy: is it that Nigeria aint got game developers or they ain't on nairaland?

I thought of open source dev bt all open source projects I know here on nairaland hasn't worked out, all ended up halfway. {animal's revolt comes to mind
I would propose that creating small games may/may be the best option since the world is moving "next gen" bt if a team of developers (5 at least) can take up to 1 year modeling characters, experimenting with physics technologies, building a good story line, choosing engines etc, I think they might just be the creators of the best game in Africa.
since it easier said that done, the possibility of this occurring is >0.2
that's another issue, nairaland programmers prefer working freelance plus we have mostly web developers here... propose an open source game and people will join just to raise arguments. there is one on going open source game here though slow but steady by bluemagnificient the guys has been making progress on his own
