I'm not as well informed on the Jaguar as some of the other aircraft enthusiasts on this forum, but I'd like to point out that the only reason Iran could keep its Western aircraft airworthy was because it purchases the (predominantly US made) parts for them on the black market at exorbitant prices. Some countries that are retiring old US aircraft probably allow their remaining inventories of spares to be sold to Iran through back channels.

I once read an interesting book about the Iran-Iraq War in which it mentioned the Iranian military has always had to spent several times the normal market price on spare parts for everything due to sanctions.

You can only cannibalise so many parts before you run out, indigenous manufacturing is impossible without the blueprints or the right tooling equipment, and black market parts are also quite expensive. Iran only did the latter because it had no choice. With the amount of money it spent on keeping those old aircraft operational, it could have purchased more brand new aircraft that were far superior.

I know bro. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a photo or two of our guys receiving medals at a ceremony.

It makes sense to train in that country. They got vast experience fighting in the jungle and their own Navy SBS are also quite respected in the South East Asia region.

The SANDF has some good female soldiers. One boeremeisie is a Gripen pilot. And there are some very accomplished markswomen I see making the rounds at the combat rifle championships who can outshoot a lot of male soldiers. It's part of a long tradition of women in the armed services that goes back to WW2.

Granted, there are a lot of women in the SANDF who shouldn't be there, but I could also say the same for a great many men as well!

When I was in Israel for a while I watched the tough, exceptionally disciplined female IDF soldiers (including some IDF Saffies) in action. There is a right way to put women in uniform without lowering your standards of fitness, discipline, and overall professionalism and there is a wrong way to do it.
I don't quite understand this apathy to women in combat, and it has nothing to do with gender, Nigerian women have fought in every conflict even before Nigeria became a nation, Does a woman taught how to fire an AK-47 suddenly forget how to fire an AK?
Where is the lowering of standards coming from ? Please do not blame it on the woman blame it on the training doctrine of the Nation's army.

It makes me sad to see Nigeria and Amisom countries spend billions on their militaries while trying to defeat haram and shabab. Unfortunatly haram and shabab CANNOT be defeated militarily. There are 2 ways these two groups can be destroyed completely, and in less than 5 years:

1. Enabling the communities in which they have a support base to make a living; thrive; by paying them a wage to have them invest their labor in public works in their communities like building schools, roads, sanitation,... Ban all NGOs, their handouts kill self-sufficiency.
2.Equiping, paying an above average salary, and giving proper living conditions to the police in the base communities.

The actual enemy is poverty.

They have a well disciplined force, i never knew their military, Army, was this impressive. They can make a dependable partner in the fight against terror in the Sahel region.

I'm not so sure. If i had to hazard a guess i would say Nigerians based on the vehicle and combat fatigues.

I guess their weapons will be the greatest indicator.
Can anyone make out what weapons the ECOMIG close protection are holding

BBC in their reporting stated that heavily armed Nigerian and Senegalese troops led the protection for the newly elected President as he landed in The Gambia.
It is to be expected that Nigerian and Senegalese in the coming days will provide the President's security.

I'm totally against the deployment of ECOMIG. Nobody has been able to provide legal backing that supports military intervention in Gambia. Nigeria hasn't provided any, Senegal, none, Ghana zero, ECOWAS, the AU and the UNSC.


These are the undeniable facts. Irrespective of the euphoria surrounding the deployment.

If this were to happen in Uganda, would the AU/ECOWAS respond in this manner. You and i know the answer is a resounding NO.

Democratic institutions should be allowed to effect change. A show of bravado is not the direction we should be going in Africa.

I'm excited with our rapid response. Especially when we consider the debacle that was Mali, the response time for Mali was abysmal. Gambia is also much, much farther than mali.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE CONSTITUTES BOARD OF OFFICERS TO INVESTIGATE RANN ACCIDENTAL AIR STRIKE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has constituted a board of senior officers to investigate the accidental air strike on 17 January 2017 at Rann, Borno State. Among its terms of reference, the Board is to determine the immediate and remote causes as well as the circumstances that led to the incident. This is with a view to forestall future occurrence. In addition to a list of 20 witnesses given to it, the Board is free to invite other persons to give evidence on oath. The Board is to submit its report not later than 2 February 2017.

The 6-man Board is headed by the Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force (HQ NAF), Air Vice Marshal Salihu Bala-Ribah. Other members are Air Vice Marshal Charles Oghomwen, Air Commodore Ayoola Jolasinmi, Group Captain Essien Efanga, Wing Commander Solomon Irmiya and Wing Commander Mohammed Muazu.

Nigeria needs to muster at least 2 battalions.
1 battalion of 800 men is insufficient. Even if the senegalese or ghanaians join up.
Gambian armed forces is probably at about 2000 men
ECOWAS have to use overwhelming force or the threat of overwhelming force...
Senegal will take the Lead role in this
Nigeria and Senegal have excellent Military relations dating back to their Ecomog days.
Some officers who fought in both wars are now one and two star Generals in their respective armies.
The Nigerian Navy will be involved and the NN UNITY might be required to use her guns in Anger for the first time.
Expect the NN SBS to start linking up with their Senegalese SF counterparts from next week, as Gambia is completely surrounded by Water and Senegal, mercs or no mercs Jammeh will be gone by Feb/March 2017.

However one thing is very certain the relationship between Pakistan and Nigeria has been cemented further by this
3 - day visit and as stated and shown by the presence of the Pakistani pilots in Nigeria and Nigerian Pilots training in Pakistan.
This is a long term relationship.


I think what the air chief was saying is they are expecting 20 aircraft (different platforms) not only the super Mushshak.
