A remote base should have a dozen mortars. Shell them while they advance, it breaks their formation, slows them down and if you hit them so hard they might even think of aborting the assault.

However, if they advance then as you say HMGs, ATGMs and MGLs should welcome them. This forms a perfect defensive solution. They'll be pinned down, while you slaughter them with mortar shells at close range

The APCs can be hunted down, the ammo recovered, it is the men lost that put me in a bad mood this morning. Hopefully lessons will be learned about what happened at this base, leadership, training and tactical training is key when facing an enemy that has more numbers than you 3:1. I am bummed out but in war these things happen.


It's one of the reasons why Seleka couldn't take the SANDF Bangui base.

Even though it is a light aircraft and carries lighter weapons load, the technology onboard the Super Tucano is way above A10 Warthog and SU 25.
It is also fully net centric (although I have issue with that and it's implications for national security). It is a cheap to operate and advanced suite of capabilities not just airfraft that we are getting.
Nigeria needs 100 of these planes so we can secure all borders, track Boko Haram, track herdsmen , monitor intending pirates and oil thieves and provide quick reaction for disaster relief

If it is being financed by US banks then you have your answer why it is $600million

Seriously though, a reckoning is afoot. They can't mortgage their foreign policy forever. Already, the Saudis have withheld the latest tranche because the Egyptians went against them on a UN vote on Syria/Assad and the Iran agreement. Plus the Egyptian military has been rumbling that the Saudis are mismanaging the war in Yemen.

Just today the Egyptian Central Bank announced that foreign debt for 2016 jumped 40% year on year . Just for 2016 alone we're talking loans of:
- $2.75bn from the International Monetary Fund (IMF);
- $1bn from the World Bank;
- $500m from the African Development Bank;
- $1bn from the United Arab Emirates; and
- $2bn from Saudi Arabia.

If the Army were smart they would turn part of Sambisa into what we have at Lohatla, by the sounds of things Sambisa is big and sparsely occupied.

Setting aside 100 000+ hectares for brigade level maneuvers and building up an adjacent training facility for more tactical training would be a massive boost for the Army.

The facility could be modelled on the Russian 333rd Training Center (Alabino) which caters specifically to the training of entire Brigades - from small unit tactics to overall maneuvers. You just cycle formations through the base on an annual or biennial basis.

On vehicles like the Reva FAV, Nigerian IPV, Hornet, Panhad SPV, Jackal, FIV and other types of Special Forces vehicles, I never said I don't like them.

I said in reality and purpose of the argument I prefer vehicles like the Plasan Sandcat or M-ATV for Special forces. I said for the Nigerian threat environment, vehicles like the Sandcat are better. I wanted to get a proper argument that would support a contrary view.

Unfortunately, all the respondents could not provide a good argument, @Frumentius was busy posting photos of the SPV in service of other European armies, with a message of how "they were wrong and I was right " and how I "know more than them".

To his credit, only Patches gave a reasonable argument, however all he said, could still be and are currently replicated by the Plasan Sandcat.

On the Hornet, although it is ugly, I like the vehicle as it provides a compliment of some of the things I want to see in an SPV with it's own characteristics of a Fast Intervention Vehicle.


So, No! I did not begin to like Fast Intervention Vehicles because Nigeria is building them. No!

What a shallow answer (pun fully intended)! Pirates need a permissible environment to base and establish home ports. Such does not exist anywhere in SADC. As for illegal fishing, not the job of the navy, but the Department of Fisheries. DAFF has to request the Navy to apprehend culprits, or have fisheries inspectors aboard naval vessels for a legal arrest by the navy. Additionally, the whole southern Indian Ocean as far as halfway to Australia is the responsibility of SA, and there's no way we could efficiently patrol that with the number of current assets.

I really wish people could inform themselves first before spewing garbage on this forum.

That was very funny, just so you know before the NA deploys any machine it is tested and trained by the men who are going to use it , repeatedly at the height of the bh campaign the NA repeatedly tested and trained the men who were using these new weapons. lol those comments by MR HENRY are still ringing

The truth is if we want huge advantage in aircrafts production, NAF has to employ Aerospace engineers ( I'm not talking about those sent on course to the UK).
Those from AFIT are doing well too but we currently need people with vast knowledge in different areas.

Aircraft manufacturing is something tough and the best is for NAF is to employ foreign guys first. I have seen some Nigerians with Aerospace engineering degrees from top universities like MIT and others
