Travel › Re: Help! Friends, Family & Former School Mates From Nig Are Killing Me With Demands by lucky032(m): 8:38am On Jul 09, 2015 |
astrodome: Help!! Friends, family, former school mates and others are killing me with financial demands. Everyday I receive facebook (fb) messages, phone calls, email messages and messages from other communication avenues from family members, friends close and distant, school mates I have not seen in 20 years but with whom I reconnected on fb, and even random fb friends (meaning I do not know them personally but somehow we managed to be friends on fb). They all have the same story: please send me money, anything.
Each month I send nearly 3k to Nigeria and they keep asking for more.
Do they think I pluck money from trees in America? Do they think every Nigerian in America is doing drugs or credit card fraud to make money? Are they thinking that since Akin or Emeka made it in America (in many cases by selling drugs and doing credit card fraud), I should also make it and therefore be able to satisfy their unending demands?
How do I explain to them that I have bills (auto, mortgage, water-sewer, electricity, gas, phone, credit card) to pay. And then I have to run my family (of 4) and fuel 2 cars, and on top of that, I have to save also for the rainy day - for when kids get to college.
I am able to resist the random fb friends because I do not have any personal connection with them, but how do I scare the ones I know off without sounding rude and unhelping? I know that when you stop giving, you become an enemy. Help! Before a fellow nairalander runs amock on the streets of America because of pressure from Nigeria
Just for disclosure: I am well-heeled in the US mid-upper middle class, earning a 6-figure pay, holds a PhD, and involved in R4D activities. But I live in a US city (name withheld) where mortgage payment alone takes 25% of my monthly income. So you can imagine that after paying all bills, I do not have tons of money left over to give out on frequent basis.
Please advise on how to handle this, Naija style . Thanks Better stop giving and become their enemy. When you have show down, they will still be the one to laugh you. |

RedCapChief: It is an enviable aspiration to aim to travel to Canada. However, let me use this forum to appeal to all prospective travellers. Do not travel into a country with a Visitor's Visa and then hope to 'regularise'(?) your stay. I don't know about other countries, but about Canada, it will not work. Visitor's visa is for Visiting. Travel Agents will tell you anything to collect your money. That is their job. There are some lovely internet forums (NL travel section included) that can aid you in your quest. If you are literate enough to write on NL, you are literate enough to log on to cic.gc.ca and get information. When my family started the Canadian PR application in 2011, the number of agents used was zero, the amount of extraneous money paid out was also zero. There were many confusing moments but thank God for good Nigerians on internet forums.
In all, get the proper information and don't throw away your money on someone who is promising what he can not give. What if you get someone to marry legally? |

Loveren: Based on true life story. Five years ago a prophet of GOD told a female cousin of mine that her real man that GOD has prepared for her will come for her(a medical doctor precisely) after some years, though she was in a relationship as at that time, so after five years since the prophesy the man a medical doctor has actually been disturbing her for months now, this man wont just give up (even though she just got married two months ago with another man), and he is even ready to fight with her husband, confirming the prophecy of the man of GOD five years ago.
Now she is emotionally down and dont know what to do, even though her husband is caring but this doctor is GOD's plan for her.
Nairalanders what decision will you advice her to take as at this moment?
Mature answers are needed please. forget all these prophet of doom.If God had actually wanted her to marry the doctor, she would hv made it possible for her not to have married in the first place |

justwise: You completely missed the point! Don't go to Canada if you can't afford the fees and maintenance money to start with.
People are saying this in good faith and so that you don't make the same mistake others made and get stucked. Go home you can't because you can't afford the ticket or face the shame and stigma.
If you can afford to pay your fees and maintenance money at leas for a year then give it a go but leaving Nigeria with almost and hoping to work and study to pay fees and bills is beyond madness. I don't mean those going for study buh hussling |

I could only do 20hrs when school was in session and I have tried to get a better paying job all summer to no avail. This could be specific to my location but it's the reality. Thank God for savings set aside before embarking on this path.
