IslamRe: Ruling On Masturbation (See also Health Hazard) by Lukgaf(op): 11:03pm On Mar 28, 2019
HEALTH HAZARD

There are a number of confirmed health hazards that could arise as a result of masturbation. From them: the dispersion of the mind, as it will attempt to recall sexual interactions prior to masturbating, and this leads in the long-term a weakening of the memory. Also, (for the male), the hand is relatively rougher than the vagina, masturbating leads, in the long term, to a weakening of the sensitivity of the male penis. This is a disease widespread amongst Westerners – may Allah protect us from it – where men leave their women, as he is unable to ejaculate during sex with her, and is sufficed with ejaculating by his hand (masturbating), with the aid of pornography. As for the woman, then it leads to an enlargement of the external sexual organs (clitoris and outer labia), and thinness of the vagina, which results in a lack of sexual enjoyment when penetrated by her husband. This is why MouthAction is very common amongst Westerners. Likewise, the ease of masturbating compared to sex (as it doesn’t require another person), encourages continuation of doing it, until one becomes addicted. Dr. Anwar al-Hamaadi says that masturbation has much harm, the most important: Weak sexuality, weak sperm, premature ejaculation, a curving of the penis (Peyronie’s Disease), and other things. It is clear from the words of the doctors that engaging in masturbation leads to physical and psychological harms, as it uses body strength, leads to depression, busies its doer from doing the obligations, and could escort him to committing fornication. Shaykh, Dr. Mustafa az-Zarqaa said: “And what is medically harmful, is cautioned from Islaamically, and this is the agreement of the fuqahaa`”.

Masturbation (al-istimnaa`) linguistically is: a noun, and it entails the forceful release of ones own semen by hand or any other means too.

Without doubt, masturbation is common among the teens, slayqueens and bachelors/spinsters (unmarried ones). This is evident from recent FT thread by buhariski on topic "Masturbation Has Ruined My Life". Scholars of Islam prohibit masturbation because of various evils embedded to it. To see how it has ruined a guy life according to buhariski post, see, https://www.nairaland.com/5100557/masturbation-ruined-life .

Our able scholar, Professor Abdrazaq Abdmajeed Alaro was asked about the ruling of masturbation in his lecture titled "Islamicc perspective on family planning". He opined that it is prohibited upon the males and females according to the fuqahaa`, and the he cited the following statement credited our able Shaykh Muhammad bin Ameen when asked about The Islaamic Ruling on Masturbation:

Allah says in the Holy Quraan when giving qualities of the true believers. He says,

“And those who guard their chastity, except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame” [23:4-6]. Imaam Shafi’ee said in his book al-Umm : “It is thus clear in mentioning the preservation of the private parts except on the wives or the right-hand possessions, (this implies) the prohibition of other than them. It is also clear that the wives and right-hand possessions are humans, and not animals. Then He affirmed it and said: “But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors” [23:7] Hence, it is not permissible to handle (utilise) the penis except in the wife or the right-hand possession, and thus masturbation is prohibited”. Some of the Ahnaaf, like az-Zayla’i, followed in this understanding.

Some of the Thaahiriyyah refuse to prohibit it on the basis of qiyaas[3], and say that is it only disliked. Ibn Hazm says in al-Muhalla concerning masturbation: “We dislike it, for it is not from the virtuous characteristics, nor from the good qualities”. Their refusal to accept the use of the aayah in Soorat al-Mu`mineen, (as evidence) is questionable. For the scholars agree upon the prohibition of bestiality, and the evidence used is this aayah (as for the ahaadeeth on the topic, then they are all weak). And like they prohibit bestiality by that aayah, and arguing that it is not permissible to enjoy ones private part except with the wife or slave girl, then it is binding upon them to prohibit masturbation as well, and there is no difference. As for masturbating with your wife’s hand, then the scholars have permitted it. A reply to Ibn Hazm in detail will forth come. Some of the people of knowledge quoted as evidence as well, His saying: “And let those who find not the financial means for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah enriches them of His Bounty” [24:33]. This passage indicates that the command of being chaste entails being patient on anything other than it.

Also the hadeeth collected by al-Bukhaari [5/1950] and Muslim [2/1018] in their Saheehay from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ood, radiallahu ‘anh, who said: “We were with some youth not finding anything, so the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam said: ‘O assembly of youth. Whoever from you is able to get married, then let him do so, for it lowers the gaze and protects the privates. And whoever is unable, then it is (on him) to fast, for it is a protection (from committing the haraam).’” Thus, when one cannot marry, Islaamic law directs him to fasting, with its hardship, and not to masturbation, despite the strong pressure to give in for it and being easier than fasting, yet, despite this, it did not permit it. As for the ahaadeeth on the prohibition of “marrying ones hand” (nikaah al-yad), then they are not authentic.
PoliticsIkere George Dam: The State Of The Abandoned Nigeria Second Largest Dam (Video) by Lukgaf(op): 9:05am On Mar 28, 2019
The Ikere Gorge Dam is a major earth-fill dam in Iseyin local government area of Oyo State in the south west of Nigeria on the Ogun River. Reservoir capacity is 690 million m3. The dam was initiated by the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo and started in 1983 by the administration of Shehu Shagari. The dam was planned to generate 37.5 MW of electricity, to supply water to local communities and to Lagos and to irrigate 12,000 hectares of land. Built in 1982/1983, work on the dam was abandoned by subsequent military governments. A report for the UN in 2004 said that no irrigation had taken place so far, but efforts were being made to implement one of the five planned irrigation projects. The project was based on the sprinkler system which is difficult to manage and requires that the farmers be trained. (Wikipedia)

Very unfortunate, the dam has since abandoned with no work started on it. Reports have it that all equipment necessary for generating the hydro power for the benefit of the citizens are deployed there already over past two decades and can take just only 3 months for completion.

The dam can provide over 1000 direct job through fishing. The dam if judiciously use can serve as irrigation for over 12,000 hectares of land among others uses. See the video for more uses of the dam if resurrected.

We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria, Oyo state Government & Ministers of Power, work and Agriculture to see to this.

Dawah Nigeria is back after it developed unprecedented problem in February with over 100 thousand resources gone. Alhamdulilah, 60% have been recovered according to the coordinator. This is included in the below press release by the coordinator Bro Ibraheem Athaqofee:

Great Trial - How The Unthinkable Happened
Wed, 03/27/2019 - 10:28 -- dawahnigeria

1. It was just after Isha on February 28, DN dawahcast developed an unprecedented problem.

2. With a server glitch, we lost all we have being labouring for since 2009, 10years. Our prized platform with over 100 THOUSAND AUDIOS [lectures, audiobooks, Quran recitation etc] in 6 Nigerian languages was gone.

3. Our server host told us point-blank that they could not help us. We had dismantled a number of fallback measures earlier, in the face of dwindling donations & rising cost.

4. This is so painful to us and we sincerely apologize for the inconveniences. We appreciate all the calls, messages and 'near-threats'.

5. Due to the downtime:
- Nearly 30,000 people would have been unable to get more guidance (some were close to tears, we too!)
- Over 10 terabyte of dawah could not be delivered

6. Alhamdulillaahi, we reopened yesterday after a month of downtime! The DN Team struggled to cross the 60% resolution milestone, spending heavily and overwhelmingly overworked.

7. Sadly, while we are back online, we have lost a chunk of resources, probably forever! Work is still ongoing to recover as much as possible.

8. We are in a serious financial mess. Our book balance is currently on a marathon in the 'red' direction.

9. We are still rebuilding the collapsed infrastructure. We also need to work on returning the stability and reliability measures we had to discontinue previously.

10. We have been working on some sustainability initiative [Adverts, DN Subscriptions, DNZip etc coming soon]. In sha Allah, we would get there.

11. We need sustained help. To keep afloat, we need consistent help till we can stand alone. It costs approximately N3,500 - N5,000 monthly to host & manage a resource person & we currently have over 200.

PoliticsSome States Have Almost 24 Hours Supply- Fashola (video) by Lukgaf(op): 10:50pm On Mar 27, 2019
Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing has said that some cities in Nigeria can now boast of constant power supply.

He made the assertion on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.

“Sitting down here I can tell you some states that have almost 24 hours – Kebbi, Yobe. Some have five, some have 10 and there are still outages,” Fashola said.

He said the constant power supply in some states is due to the increase in the transmission capacity, noting that the transmission capacity has grown to about 8,100 watts as of December 2018.

He said the Ministry of Power has moved forward but needs to implement the short term goals it set.

Fashola also spoke about programmes which the ministry have put in place to ensure adequate power supply across the nation.

“The government has decided that as 40 per cent holder of everything in the distribution of power, we have our programme to invest N72 billion which will involve installing transformers and all of that.

“We created a metre access provider regulation. What it does is to create a new plan of investment programme. We manufacture, produce, supply and install metres and fill the gap the distribution companies cannot raise capital to fill. They cannot do so alone, they must do so under a procurement policy with the distribution company,” he said.

The former Lagos State governor said the Federal Government will solve the problems of poor power supply in the country and will continue to keep the people informed as to the watts being consumed in the country.

EducationMURIC Reacts To WAEC's "Disappear Without Trace" Threats by Lukgaf(op): 6:33am On Mar 26, 2019
‘You must explain your violent threats to the authorities’

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has reacted to the Deputy Registrar of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Reverend (Dr) Henry Osidehinde’s disappearance threat against its director, Prof Ishaq Akintola, saying the Reverend father should be ready to explain his violent threats to the authorities.

Muslim News had earlier published Reverend Henry’s 1 minute, 3 second threat audio clip, which he made last week during a WAEC seminar for teachers held at the examination body’s International Office, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

In a press statement jointly signed by MURIC’s General Secretary, Alhaji Yakeen Williams and its Public Relations Officer, Mr Shafiu Ayorinde on Monday, March 25, the Muslim rights body expressed shock at what it described as a “nauseating” and “careless” threat from a Reverend father, a supposed man of God.

MURIC – a non-violent, non-governmental organisation defending the rights of Muslims – called on the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu to swiftly launch a full investigation into the incident.

The group also sought protection for its Director and members of his family.

Read the excerpts from the press release below:

MURIC expressed shock at the threat issued by the WAEC official. Continuing, the human rights organization said, “This is nauseating. A Christian reverend holding a high post in such a sensitive institution nurses such pernicious ideas against a fellow human being? Where is his Christlikeness? It is sad that there are many like him in the civil service.

“This Muslim-hater forgot that we are in an IT world. Things have changed. Hardly can you say anything nowadays and get away with it. There are records everywhere today. Even walls now have ears. We are waiting for him to deny it. We have the audio clip. Just let him try to deny it.

“We cannot take Mr. Osidehinde’s threat against our Director lightly. It is outrageous. How can a whole deputy registrar in WAEC office talk like that? He has simply proved that he is a Christian fanatic. How can you wish a fellow Nigerian should disappear permanently? He must explain all these to the authorities.

“The deputy registrar complained that Akintola was threatening an institution (i.e. WAEC) that belongs to the government. But we will like to ask the reverend/deputy registrar if it is right to use an institution that belongs to government to persecute Muslims.

“Or is it WAEC that sent him on this criminal errand? Does WAEC wish Akintola dead? Does the examination body want our Director to disappear? It had better not happen. But did WAEC authorize its Christian officials to use their positions to vilify Muslims and wish them kidnapped or killed? Did WAEC ask its officials to use an institution that belongs to government to persecute Muslims?

“It is abundantly clear from the above transcript that Reverend Osidehinde is filled with ill-will for Professor Akintola. He has evil desires. He wants Akintola to disappear. What we are not sure of is the extent to which he can go. That is what the security agencies should find out from him. Does the government have a special squad that makes people disappear? Will he arrange to kidnap Akintola if government fails to make him disappear? Will he organize an assassination?”

MURIC also called on the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, to launch a full investigation into the incident. The group also sought protection for its Director and members of his family.

“Reverend Osidehinde wants to cause crisis in this country by carelessly issuing threat against a public figure. We call on the security agencies to launch full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident. We also ask for protection for our Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola. Nobody should be allowed to play God in the lives of his fellowmen.

“We remind the Inspector General of Police that our Director is a public figure and a notable Muslim leader. Threat to the life of such a person should not be ignored. We are certain that the security agencies know what we are talking about”.

The Islamic human rights organization explained why it intervened in the school incident.

“Helpless parents whose children were being forced to remove their hijab in Iba Estate Senior Secondary School called us to help. They also came with us. It is a public school, not a private property. It belongs to all of us. Therefore nobody has the right to use such property for the persecution of Muslim children. It is called a school, not a prison yard for crying out loud. In any case the Lagos State Government declared that hijab is legitimate and that female Muslim students have the right to use it.

“Surprisingly, overzealous and fanatical school principals and teachers refused to obey the state government’s directive. They ordered the children to remove their hijab when they were about to take pictures for the registration of WAEC. That was Draconian. It was an illegal order and the parents kicked.

“Recalcitrant principals and teachers who continue to disobey Lagos government’s directive on hijab should know that those who disallow what the state government allows make it impossible for Muslim students not to disobey. The teachers disobeyed the state government and the parents told their children to disobey the teachers. Muslim children are being persecuted by fanatical Christian principals and teachers under the guise of performing official functions.

“MURIC merely went in to ensure that government’s directive was carried out. We went there to ensure that fanatical teachers are not allowed to sabotage government’s policy. In any case, was it WAEC that gave instructions that female Muslim students should remove their hijab as claimed by those who came to register the students?

“Did WAEC also issue the same instruction to schools in Northern Nigeria? The school’s action was illegal. You cannot build anything on nullity. The school principal or his reverend/deputy registrar friend in WAEC may want to go to court for the action taken by MURIC. We are waiting.

MURIC denied the claim made by Osidehinde in the audio that Akintola or MURIC threatened WAEC.

“It is a big lie. Neither Akintola as an individual nor MURIC has ever threatened any individual or institution. It is not in our character. We challenge the reverend/deputy registrar to provide his evidence for Nigerians to see.

The problem we have in Nigeria today is that fanatics like Reverend Osidehinde become carried away by their religious zeal so much so that they allow it to becloud their objectivity. They use their public office to persecute people of other faith. Meanwhile they see Akintola and MURIC as a threat to their illegal exploit. That is simply what has happened. That is why our reverend wants Akintola guillotined.

MURIC wondered how WAEC has been condoning excesses committed against Muslims. It also requested WAEC to investigate the matter internally and take necessary action afterwards.

“We are wondering what is happening in WAEC and we are asking if Muslims are safe in the hands of this regional examination body. Why is Islamophobia so deeply entrenched in WAEC? A WAEC official yanked off the hijab from a female Muslim candidate’s head right inside the examination hall some years back. We reported the case but what did WAEC do?

“What is WAEC going to do with this case of threat to life coming from a top management staff, an officer of the rank of deputy registrar? Why was he so flippant, so careless? Was the seminar about MURIC’s activities or about Akintola? If it is not so, why the dangerous digression? Has Deputy Registrar Osidehinde behaved professionally? When did beer parlour gossip become WAEC’s business? Or does his threat represent WAEC’s official position? If so, is WAEC just going to sit back, pat him on the back and give him double promotion? Nigerians are watching.

“On our part, we demand that WAEC commences investigation into the threat to the life of our Director with immediate effect. The fact that the threat was made in the course of carrying out an official duty makes it mandatory for the examination body to take disciplinary action against its erring staff. Osidehinde personalized issues and allowed his hatred for Muslims to override official discipline. WAEC needs to clear its good name.

“At this juncture, we are compelled to ask what Osidehinde and his cohorts want. They are now after the life of a man who devoted his entire life to peaceful persuasion. This is a man who boldly condemned Boko Haram and constantly urges Muslims to eschew extremism and remain law-abiding. By seeking to kill him or make him disappear, it means they will not be satisfied until he keeps quiet and allows them to do whatever they like with Nigerian Muslims.

“They are not happy with him because he stands between them and their desire to silence Muslims permanently, to persecute them and finally to eliminate Islam completely from the entire country. As the founder of MURIC, Akintola has modelled his organization on pacific activism, non-violence and dialogue and has never been involved in any violent incident.

“Nonetheless, our Director is known for outstanding courage on account of which he was recently turbaned as the Kinniun Adinni (Lion of Scholars). The courage which he exhibits in fighting against the oppression of Muslims should not be misinterpreted as lawlessness or religious extremism. We reject such blackmail. Akintola is merely fighting for justice, fairness and equity and he uses intellectual and peaceful methods, not violence.

“In a nutshell, we condemn this threat against our Director. We charge the IG to take necessary steps capable of ensuring Professor Akintola’s safety. We call on WAEC to immediately institute investigations into the matter”.

Abi my brother. God bless you for this contribution. I swear, people are hypocrites.
nextstep:
The lack of common sense on compassion being displayed is quite alarming.

Nigeria is a deeply religious country (at least people want to be seen to be, which is a different story altogether).

For at least 60 years now, the Government of Nigeria and its parastatals have been aware that Friday has special meanings for Muslims, same as Sunday for Christians. There are 4 other days in the week for exams to be scheduled - 5 if you include Saturday. Why is this still an issue? If the WAEC official was muslim and threatened to put exams around 9am-1pm on Sunday, you can imagine the howling we'd hear from Churchgoers.

I'm non-religious BTW, but I believe in basic fairness. I was brought up in the Christian faith, and also encouraged by my Christian parents to attend Quran study for years, and intentionally took Islamic Studies in Secondary School, so I could grow up with a broader understanding of two religions that are really just two sides of the same coin, two brothers from the same Father. That we Africans are still fighting each other over two imported religions is quite amusing (if sad) to me.

Bonus points: did you know that both Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) and Prophet Jesus (Christ) are believed to have ascended into heaven from the vicinity of Jerusalem?

WAEC Official Threatens MURIC Director With Disappearance In Leaked Audio

March 25, 2019

In a tone reminiscent of the dark days of the military era in Nigeria, an official of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Reverend (Dr) Henry Osidehinde has threatened a ‘disappear without trace’ treatment for Director of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Professor Ishaq Akintola for daring to demand the rights of Muslim students.

In the 1 minute, 3 seconds audio clip exclusively obtained by Muslim News, Rev. Osidehinde specifically warned Prof Akintola against protesting over WAEC’s deliberate scheduling of its examinations to collide with Friday’s prayer.

The Reverend, who is reported to be the Deputy Registrar in charge of the School Examinations Department at the Lagos office of WAEC made the controversial statement at a seminar held on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the examination body’s International Office, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

The seminar, which centred on Teachers’ Development in an ICT – Driven World, had in attendance representatives of schools and WAEC officials. The chief discussant, Dr Babajide Bakare presented a paper on the subject.

According to a source who preferred anonymity, although there was no media presence at the event, the voice was captured during the recording of the the educative presentation of the Chief discussant with a phone.

According to the source, Reverend Osidehinde, who was the Chairman of the occasion, was answering a question on the challenges faced by WAEC in preparing timetables, while making reference to Prof Akintola of MURIC.

Osidehinde who was displayed so much arrogance, hatred and disdain for Islam said in the audio,

“In Nigeria, we are becoming over-religious. We are becoming so holier (sic) than the Pope and holier (sic) than the man in Saudi Arabia that somebody like Professor Ishaq Akintola would now be going to schools to disrupt (their activities) because of prayer time.

“We need to stop this. I am mentioning this because it is getting too much and I expected Lagos State to take proper action against Prof Ishaq. He recently went to a school in Ojo to disrupt (sic) I have the video here. We need to be guided properly.

“Someone was saying, ‘If they don’t take it (time-table) away on Friday (sic)’. You don’t threaten an institution like government. The government can take anybody out and they will not see that person again. And nothing will happen. Nothing. Not that they will kill the person, they will just take him out of circulation and keep him somewhere,” he declared emphatically.

Muslim News wondered if Reverend Osidehinde’s position will remain the same should WAEC fix the same examination on Sunday.

MURIC – a non-violent, non-governmental organisation – has over the years protested against fixing the WAEC examination timetable during Jum’ah (Friday prayer) periods and the incessant harassments of Muslim girls in Hijab in Southwest schools.

Last year, WAEC changed the examination date of the Chemistry paper, which clashed with the Muslim Friday prayers in its SSCE timetable, after complaints and criticisms from MURIC, Muslim stakeholders and affected candidates.

Prof Lakin warned WAEC that fixing exams during Jum’ah period, was not only illegal and unconstitutional, but is also capable of causing disturbance of public peace.

It would also be recalled that in early January 2019 Prof Akintola led his members and some Muslims to Iba Housing Estate Senior High School, Lagos, where WAEC officials ordered female Muslim students to remove their Hijabs before they could be captured for the registration process.

I was surprised when I went to Lekki one Friday and saw an army of them trooping out from one the central mosques.

HOW DO WE CHANNEL THIS PAIN?
How do we deal with it? What are we supposed to do? One thing that we can definitely take solace in is the fact that the Prophet ﷺ, the last and final messenger, our role model also felt that pain. He experiences similar trials and hardships. There was a very powerful anti-Islam, anti-Muslim sentiment among the people of Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ himself was attacked both verbally and physically. He dealt with the pain of rejection, prejudice, bigotry, and hatred. He had to deal with the pain of seeing some of his closest companions tortured, beaten, persecuted, and even killed. Yasir, his wife Sumayyah and their son ‘Ammar raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) faced painful persecution at the hands of Quraish. Yasir raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) died as a result of his persecution and his wife was killed by Abu Jahl just because they were Muslim. They were made to feel this pain, to go through these trials, difficulties and struggle to make them stronger. To develop their faith, personality, and character. This pain didn’t cause them to give in to fear; it didn’t make them scared. Rather, it made them stronger.

In multiple places throughout the Quran Allah ﷻ teaches the Prophet ﷺ how to deal with this pain. How to derive strength from these trials and hardships. When the people of Quraish rejected him when they called him a liar, a magician, a sorcerer and a madman Allah ﷻ told him, “So be patient, [O Muhammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allah is Truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.”

Allah ﷻ told him to seek strength through patience and prayer.

To focus on his relationship with Allah ﷻ. Allah ﷻ told him something similar in Surah Taha, “So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night[exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.”

These are the same words of advice that Allah ﷻ gives to us as believers, “O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”

The true strength of believers has never been through financial or physical means. Their true power has always come through their spiritual strength.

These incidents are meant to push us closer to Allah ﷻ, to unite us, to strengthen our faith, and make us more dedicated to our religion.

These are wake up calls. Allah ﷻ is literally shaking us and telling us to come back to him. It’s time to come back. That’s the only true way of changing our situation.

Although the perpetrator himself carried out the massacre in cold blood, I can’t help but place blame on all those who demonize Islam and Muslims. Part of the blame rests with those politicians who use fear-mongering, hate and prejudice to paint Muslims as the “other” just to win votes. They say outlandish things like Muslims are colonizing and invading our countries. That they want to take over and impose Sharia Law. They introduce anti-Sharia bills to create more fear. Part of the blame goes to these obnoxious, loud-mouthed, bigoted pundits, like Bill Maher and his likes, who constantly spew inflammatory rhetoric from their influential platforms. Part of the blame goes to people like Lauren Southern, Tommy Robinson, Richard Spencer, Pamela Geller, and Frank Gaffney who are openly prejudiced towards Islam and try to create a sense of hate and fear in their viewer’s hearts. They openly speak of something they call “the Muslim problem”. Part of the blame goes to all these other bigots who use their influence to preach against Islam. There are so much bigotry and fear-mongering that at times it seems overwhelming. There’s so much bias, hate, and prejudice that sometimes we feel stuck. And it’s this rhetoric, this hate, this prejudice and bigotry that has created an environment that would allow for something like this to happen. Senseless acts of violence like this don’t happen in a vacuum. There are circumstances that are created that allow them to take place.

This tragic incident really hit home for a lot of us. Part of the reason is that Muslims living as minorities can actually relate to it. It feels real. It is real. The individuals killed in the masjid could’ve been any one of us. It could’ve been any one of our family members and that’s a scary thought. Whenever we see Muslims in pain, struggling, dealing with death and loss we’re supposed to feel that pain as well. As the Prophet ﷺ said, “The believers are like a single body. If the eye hurts the entire body feels the pain. If the head hurts the entire body feels that pain.” All of us are feeling that pain. I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of pain the parents and the families are feeling right now.

This week, the Muslim ummah was faced with another devastating trial. Two separate mosques were attacked by a right-wing extremist in New Zealand during Friday prayer. According to the latest report approximately 49 god-conscious, mosque-going Muslims were massacred in cold bold. This is an absolute act of senseless violence. They were killed in the masjid simply because they believed in the kalima la ilaha illa Allah… There’s absolutely no mistake that this was a cowardly act of terrorism. May Allah ﷻgrant all the deceased the highest ranks in Jannah and may He give patience and strength to their families.

This is a result of years of unchecked and unfiltered hate speech, xenophobia, Islamophobia, prejudice, and racism that has been propagated through the mainstream media. All of us know that the mainstream media, whether its CNN, BCC, or Fox News, portrays Islam and Muslims in the most negative light possible. There’s a whole well-funded industry of Islamophobia and propaganda dedicated to tarnishing the image of Islam and Muslims in the average person’s mind. They’ve created an environment where the word Islam has negative associations. To an extent that when someone hears the word Islam, they automatically think of violence, terror, bombings and the enemy.

In today’s current social and political environment, being Muslim is truly becoming a challenge; it’s a struggle. It feels like we’re living in the times that were described by the Prophet ﷺ in a number of different narrations. The Prophet ﷺ said, “A time will come upon people when a person practicing his religion with patience will be like one holding on to a burning ember.”

Just like holding on to a burning ember is very difficult, it causes physical pain, holding on to our religion will also be very difficult. It will lead to hardships and difficulties. It seems as if every other week we’re dealing with some type of tragedy, some type of crisis. And each one seems to be bigger and worse than the last. As Anas raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) told those who were complaining about the trials and difficulties they were facing at the hands of Hajjāj ibn Yusuf, “There is no year, except that the one that is after it will be more evil than it, until you meet your Lord. I heard this from your Prophet ﷺ.”

“‏ مَا مِنْ عَامٍ إِلاَّالَّذِي بَعْدَهُ شَرٌّ مِنْهُ حَتَّى تَلْقَوْا رَبَّكُمْ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ سَمِعْتُ هَذَا مِنْ نَبِيِّكُمْ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.
Similarly, the Prophet ﷺ told us that we will face trial after trial, difficulty after difficulty. The Prophet ﷺ said that near the end of times the Ummah will be faced with trials and difficulties that it will dislike. Then he said, “There will be tremendous trials one after the other, each making the previous one dwindle into insignificance. When they would be afflicted with a trial, the believer would say: This is going to bring about my destruction. When at (the trial) is over, they would be afflicted with another trial, and the believer would say: This surely is going to be my end.”
IslamDifference Between Interest-based & Islamic Bank by Lukgaf(op): 5:56am On Mar 22, 2019
Someone asks that is the fee Islamic bank charge in return for their service regarded as being similar to riba (interest)? What are the transactions that Islam regards as being riba?

Praise be to Allah.

Firstly:

The interest-based system on which commercial banks are based is a haraam, riba-based system that is based on lending and borrowing with riba. The bank lends money to the customer with interest, and the customer who deposits money in the bank lends this money to the bank in return for interest. Loans with interest constitute riba, regarding which there is scholarly consensus that it is prohibited.

Islamic banks are based on permissible transactions such as selling, buying, profit sharing, partnerships and other Islamically-acceptable forms of investment, in addition to the fees charged for wire transfer, benefiting from variations in currency exchange, and currency exchange.

There follows a straightforward example to explain the difference between riba-based transactions and Islamically-acceptable transactions, and how the bank benefits from doing either of the two transactions: If the customer wants to put his money to good use and make it grow, then he deposits it in a savings account in the riba-based bank, and the bank allocates to him a known percentage of interest, whilst guaranteeing his capital. This in fact is a riba-based loan, a loan from the customer to the bank. The benefit to the bank is how it uses the deposited money, which it lends to another customer in return for interest to be paid by the customer. Thus the bank borrows and lends, and benefits from the difference.

As for Islamic banks, one of the ways in which they invest is to take money from the customer and invest it in a permissible business, or to set up a housing project and the like, on the basis that it will give the customer a percentage of the profits, and the bank – as the entity that does the actual work – will also have a percentage of the profits. Thus the bank benefits from the percentage that it takes of the profits generated by the project, and its share of the profits may be much greater than what riba-based banks collect from riba, which is haraam. But in the case of profit-sharing there is an element of risk, and the bank has to try hard to select a project that is beneficial and keep an eye on it until it bears fruit.

The difference between the riba-based bank and the Islamic bank in these examples is the difference between haraam, riba-based loans and Islamically-acceptable profit-sharing in which the customer may lose his money, because there is no guaranteed protection of his capital, but if he makes a profit, this gain is halaal wealth.

The point is that the Islamic bank has many acceptable ways of making a profit, and hence these banks have begun to grow and flourish. In fact some non-Muslim countries are trying to apply the Islamic banking system, because it makes a profit and avoids much of the mischief that stems from the riba-based system and is the cause of ruin and loss.

Secondly:

Riba-based transactions are of many types, such as lending and borrowing with interest; currency exchange (selling one currency for another) and deferring hand-to-hand exchange; exchanging gold for gold in different quantities, or with the exchange to happen later; transactions which basically boil down to being riba-based loans, such as discounted bills, savings accounts, investment certificates with returns or prizes, charging penalties for late payment in the case of sales by instalments or withdrawing cash using a credit card. You may see more information on these matters on our website.

And Allah knows best.
