IslamIs It Obligatory To Inform A Suitor Of A Possible Health Problem? by Lukgaf(op): 8:56am On Jul 05, 2019
Question

One year ago I had an infection of the optic nerve (optic neuritis), which was treated. I consulted three doctors about the cause of it. The first doctor said: You have a small risk of being affected by multiple sclerosis (MS), the first symptom of which is optic neuritis. The possibility of that is, as I said, very small, and it cannot be proven that one is affected with it until after ten or fifteen years. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nerve disease that can lead to physical disability. The second doctor said that optic neuritis is caused by a virus, and told me that I do not have MS. The third doctor also ruled out MS. Now someone has come to propose marriage to me; do I have to tell him about this possible health problem?
Praise be to Allah.

The fuqaha’ differed concerning the matters that could affect a marriage and must be disclosed. The majority are of the view that that should be limited to specific matters that would prevent physical pleasure, such as insanity, leprosy, and genital defects.

The second view is that any defect (or health problem) that may put one of the spouses off the other in such a way that the purposes of marriage – compassion and love – cannot be achieved is a defect that must be disclosed, and the marriage may be annulled if it is concealed.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The analogy is that any defect (or health problem) that would put one spouse off the other, and would prevent fulfilment of the aims of marriage, namely compassion and love, would result in giving the option of annulling the marriage.

End quote from Zaad al-Ma‘aad (5/166).

The second view is most likely to be correct.

In the answer to question no. 111980 we noted three guidelines regarding this matter:

1. if the sickness will have any impact on married life and will affect the wife’s ability to fulfil her duties towards her husband and children;

2. if it will be off-putting to the husband because of its appearance or smell;

3. if it is real and permanent, and is not something imagined or temporary that will disappear with the passage of time or after marriage.

Based on that, you do not have to disclose that you suffered optical neuritis, because you have been treated and have recovered from it.

No attention should be paid to a possible health problem that has not been proven and needs ten years to be sure whether one has been affected by it.

And Allah knows best.

IslamHaving Good Thought About People by Lukgaf(op): 8:27am On Jul 05, 2019
To harbour ill feelings and bad thoughts about others is a major sin. Due to its inner and subtle nature, this vice is often overlooked or taken lightly. It is therefore imperative for us to constantly reflect over our inner thoughts and feelings about others and to repent for our misdeeds.
The Noble Qur'an ordains: “O Believers! Refrain from excessive negative thoughts (suspicion, assumption, aspersion). Verily some of these thoughts are sinful…” (Surah Hujurat - Verse 12)

In another verse it states : “Verily your hearing, sight and hearts will all be questioned.” (Surah Isra – Verse 36)

Additonally, we may think ill of a person on a certain matter for which he may have repented sincerely and moved on, yet in our mind we retain those ill thoughts about him on the basis of the past incident.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah t narrates that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Avoid suspicion for suspicion is the greatest lie …” (Bukhari, Muslim)

A saintly person once advised: “As far as possible have or entertain good thoughts about people. If you hear something about someone and it can be interpreted either positively or negatively, impress on yourself to choose the positive option.”

On the day of Qiyamah, good thoughts will not be accounted for, however Allah Ta'ala shall hold one accountable regarding the bad thoughts. Bad thoughts create ill feeling, enmity and jealousy for others. It is for this reason that Islam has condemned and prohibited such acts.

IslamLagos To Refund N141,000 To Muslim Pilgrims by Lukgaf(op): 8:39am On Jul 04, 2019
Muslim pilgrims from Lagos State will get a refund of N141,000 each from the government in line with the recommendation of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCOM).
The development followed the review of the cost of the pilgrimage by the commission, which led to the reduction of the fare already paid by the pilgrims across the nation.

https://i0.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/08/img_20170831_080016-resized-800.jpg?w=800&ssl=1

The news of the refund was disclosed on Wednesday by Amir of Lagos Hajj Delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abdul-Lateef Abdul-Hakeem, during the orientation organised for pilgrims in the state by NAHCOM.

He said: “We usually make intending pilgrims pay deposit of the total fare. So, whenever the National Hajj Commission prescribes the Hajj fare, we always ask pilgrims to pay more. But this time around, what they paid was far above what they should pay. We have to refund the money to the pilgrims. It is their money and we have no right to appropriate their money.”

Refunding the pilgrims of the excess, Mr Abdul-Hakeem said, this shows that the government of Babajide Sanwo-Olu has zero tolerance for corruption adding that Lagos would be paying back an amount far above what other states would refund because Lagos pilgrims paid more than their counterparts in other states.

The official promised that Lagos would sustain its excellent record in Hajj exercise, stressing that the welfare of the pilgrims would be safeguarded throughout the journey.

IslamTo Stand And Drink, Or To Sit Whilst Drinking? by Lukgaf(op): 5:22am On Jun 28, 2019
Question

Looking at the narrations below, what is the Sunnah?

To stand and drink, or to sit whilst drinking?

a) Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said “No person should stand and drink water, and if one forgetfully stood and drank it, it should be vomited out” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2026)

b) Imam Ahmad narrated that Sayyiduna ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) drank whilst standing, and the people looked at him as if they objected to that. He said: ‘What are you looking at? If I drink whilst standing, I saw Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) drink whilst standing, and if I drink sitting, I saw Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) drink whilst sitting.’

Imam Bukhari (Hadith: 5615) narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that he drank whilst standing then he said: ‘Some people say it is makruh [disliked] for one of you to drink whilst standing, but I saw Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) doing what you have seen me do.’
Answer

You have cited two types of Hadiths;

a) A Hadith that discourages standing and drinking.

b) Hadiths that show permissibility of drinking whilst standing.

There are several narrations that support each of the above. Refer to ‘Umdatul Qari, Hadith: 5615.

There is no contradiction in the above, if understood correctly.

Numerous Hadith Scholars, Like ‘Allamah Khattabi, Ibn Battal, Imam Baghawi, Imam Nawawi, Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalani and others (rahimahumullah) have explained that the Hadith which discourages standing is explaining the ideal, and it is therefore Mustahabb (recommended) to drink [and eat] whilst seated.

The opposing Hadith is actually showing the permissibility of standing, and not the recommended practice.

Some ‘Ulama have mentioned that standing and drinking is actually harmful to health, and could even affect the kidney.

As a rule, there is no contradiction between a deed being permissible but not ideal.

Our Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) -in addition to habitually practicing on the ideal- would sometimes also practice on what was not ideal, merely to demonstrate its permissibility for the Ummah. There are several examples of this. The topic in question is one of them.

In short, the proper Sunnah is to sit and drink, but if one stands it will still be permissible.

Refer: Fathul Bari and ‘Umdatul Qari, Hadith: 5615-5617.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.

IslamThrough Thick And Thin: The Lesson From Prophet Ayoob by Lukgaf(op): 5:08am On Jun 28, 2019
The incident of Nabi Ayyoob (‘alaihis salaam) is well known to one and all. Initially, Nabi Ayyoob (‘alaihis salaam) was enjoying great prosperity. He had abundant animals and crops, many children and numerous homes. Allah Ta‘ala then decided to test Nabi Ayyoob (‘alaihis salaam). Hence, he lost all his wealth and even his children. Allah Ta‘ala even tested Nabi Ayyoob (‘alaihis salaam) with an illness that afflicted his entire body. The only two limbs of his body that were spared from this illness were his tongue and his heart. Nevertheless, even in this condition, he would keep his heart and tongue engaged in the remembrance of Allah Ta‘ala.

As for the respected wife of Nabi Ayyoob (‘alaihis salaam), there are two views regarding her name. According to some ‘Ulama, her name was Layyaa, while other ‘Ulama have mentioned that her name was Rahmah.

While Nabi Ayyoob (‘alaihis salaam) was patiently enduring this test, most of the people abandoned him, until he was left alone in a corner of the town. However, his loyal wife never left him or abandoned him. She remembered his favour upon her when conditions were favourable, and hence she remained at his side through thick and thin, ever loyal and faithful.

She would patiently tend to him and see to all his needs. In some narrations, it has even been mentioned that when her wealth was eventually depleted, she began to carry out domestic work in peoples’ homes in order to earn a living and see to her ailing husband’s needs. Together with this, she had lost her children and her husband was extremely sick. Through all these tests, she remained patient and did not complain, even though she went from a life of comfort and happiness to one of difficulty and sadness.

(Al-Bidaayah wan Nihaayah vol. 1 pg. 262)

Lessons:

1. The proverb “a friend in need is a friend indeed” is often quoted, highlighting the fact that a true friend is one who will remain with you in difficult times as well as good times. We can well imagine that if such loyalty is expected of a good friend, then what must be the high level of loyalty that is expected of a true spouse? After all, the relationship between the husband and wife far surpasses any friendship! Hence, a true, loyal wife is not one who will abscond to her father’s house when “the goings get tough”. Rather, she will patiently remain with her husband and assist him, to the best of her ability, as she would expect of him had she been in difficulty.

2. Undergoing tests is an unavoidable occurrence in life. We cannot choose the nature or time of our tests – but we can choose to pass the tests. To do so, we will have to hold firmly to sabr (patience) and remain pleased with the decision of Allah Ta‘ala.

IslamThe Permissibility Of Looking At Who You Want To Marry by Lukgaf(op): 1:26pm On Jun 20, 2019
Mugheerah bin Shu’bah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports the following incident:

On one occasion, I sent a proposal to marry a girl of the Ansaar. When I mentioned this to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he asked me, “Did you see the girl?” When I replied in the negative, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) recommended to me, “Look at her, for it is more likely that there will be affection and love between you(i.e. if you marry her after looking at her and finding her pleasing to your eye, there will be a greater chance of your marriage prospering).”
I thus proceeded to the girl’s home and told her parents what Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had mentioned. Hearing that I wanted to look at their daughter, the parents were reluctant. Hence, I stood and began to leave their home.

As I was leaving, the girl asked her parents to call me back. When I returned, she stood at the edge of the curtain and said, “If Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) instructed you to look at me then I permit you to do so. If not, then I strictly forbid you to look at me.” Accordingly, I looked at her and married her. Subsequently, she was extremely beloved to me and honoured in my sight.
(Ibnun Najjaar – Kanzul ‘Ummaal #45619).

Lessons:

1. The hayaa (modesty) of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) and their protectiveness over their womenfolk was such that the parents of the girl were initially reluctant when Sayyiduna Mugheerah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked to see their daughter. Similarly, until she learnt that it was the instruction of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), the daughter was not prepared to allow any strange man to look at her.

2. The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were blessed with the quality of absolute submission before the instruction of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Hence, they always put their own intellect, understanding and emotion aside and completely complied with the wishes and desires of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), understanding that this was the key to success in both worlds. Similarly, if we wish true happiness and success, we will have to adhere strictly to the teachings of Deen.

https://jamiat.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/islam-1-500x330.jpg

3. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has taught us the guidelines that need to be adhered to regarding marriage, and has told us that following these guidelines are the key to a prosperous marriage. Hence, if we surpass the bounds of sharee‘ah and begin to engage in impermissible practices, such as the boy and girl communicating or even dating before marriage, we will lose the barakah (blessings) and help of Allah Ta‘ala which is essential for the marriage to prosper. Thus, we should always refer to the ‘Ulama to find out the limits of sharee‘ah so that we can ensure that we remain within the parameters of Deen.

IslamAre Calamities Connected To The Words We Say? by Lukgaf(op): 1:03pm On Jun 20, 2019
Question
Are calamities connected to the words we say, such as a woman saying “I do not want to get married”, but she does not mean it and is only saying that in some context or other?
Answer

Praise be to Allah.

Firstly:

The saying “Calamities are connected to the words we say” is not a verse from the Qur’an or a hadith of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him); rather it is reported from some of the Sahaabah and Taabi‘een, and it is a saying that has been widespread among the Arabs since ancient times.

It was narrated as a marfoo‘ hadith attributed to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), but it is not saheeh (sound).

Ibn al-Jawzi said: This hadith is not soundly narrated from the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).

End quote from al-Mawdoo‘aat (3/83).

Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated in al-Musannaf (13/130), via Ibraaheem an-Nakha‘i, that ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood said: Calamity is connected to one’s speech. Its isnaad was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in as-Silsilah ad-Da‘eefah (7/395).

Al-Qaadi Abu Yoosuf narrated in al-Aathaar (p. 196), with his isnaad from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said: Calamity is connected to one’s words.

As-Sakhkhaawi said: There is a similar meaning in the words spoken by the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) to the Bedouin whom he went to visit when he was sick… and al-Qaadi ibn Bahlool composed the following line of verse:

Do not speak of what you would not like to happen to you; perhaps you may utter something related to an incident and it befalls you.

End quote from al-Maqaasid al-Hasanah (p.242).

As-Sakhkhaawi was referring to a report narrated by al-Bukhaari (5338) from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) according to which the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went to visit a man who was sick, and said: “Do not worry; it is purification [from sins], in sha Allah.” The man said: No; rather it is a fever that is bothering an old man so that it will take him to the graveyard. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Then yes, it is so.”

Abu ‘Ubayd al-Qaasim ibn Salaam said: According to some reports, calamity is connected to one’s words. This is one of the commonly-spoken proverbs of the Arabs.

End quote from al-Amthaal (p. 74).

Secondly:

What is meant by the saying “Calamities are connected to the words we say” is that a man may say something, then a calamity befalls him similar to what he spoke of. This is true, and there are many religious texts, events and occurrences in the past and at present which attest to that. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned something about that in Tuhfat al-Mawdood bi Ahkaam al-Mawlood (p. 122).

Abu’l-Khayr al-Haashimi said: “Calamities are connected to the words we say” means: Perhaps a man may say something that leads to a calamity happening.

End quote from al-Amthaal (p. 91).

Az-Zamakhshari said: It refers to a word that a man may say, which then leads to a calamity.

End quote from al-Mustaqsa fi Amthaal al-‘Arab (1/305).

Thirdly:

Despite the above, this is not an unfailing general principle, such that it might be said that every time a person says such words, a calamity will befall him. That is not what was meant by the one who came up with this phrase, and reality is the best proof of the falseness of this notion.

The point of this proverb is to warn people against saying something bad, or saying something wishing ill for himself, or being pessimistic about something and reflecting that in his words, so that he will not suffer because of it. It reminds him to be selective in what he says, and to choose good words with beautiful meanings and good implications, that reflect optimism, hope and cheerfulness.

Ibn Abi’d-Dunya narrated from Ibraaheem an-Nakha‘i that he said: I find myself thinking of something, and nothing prevents me from speaking of it except the fear that it might befall me and cause me suffering.

End quote from as-Samt wa Aadaab al-Lisaan (p. 169).

As for the one who has suffered (as a result of uttering such words), he should seek Allah’s forgiveness for what he uttered or what he fell into, and he should think positively of the Lord of the Worlds, for He is as His slave thinks He is. He should put his trust in the Lord of the Worlds, for whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him; whatever Allah wills happens, and whatever He does not will does not happen.

Social media has made it trendy to tell just about everyone where you are and what you are doing in a way that no one regards as either intrusive or objectionable.
The situation gets worse when private, intimate or sensitive information about others is shared without their permission or knowledge.

There seems to be an obsession to electronically capture and share everything that happens without considering whether the victim is in an accident, giving birth, being robbed or killed.

This is a serious violation of another person’s dignity and privacy.

The virtual world is easily accessible, ungoverned, addictive and fast becoming the societal norm.

People have become insensitive to information they share, sparing no thought for its authenticity or consequences.

Poor communicational conduct is not only against basic social norms but also a violation of Islamic principles of speaking the truth, seeking permission, privacy and trust.

To maintain a balance in our usage of social media and protect ourselves and others from harm, the following points should to be adhered to:

1. Every meal you are having or random thought is not post-worthy.

2. Before hitting “send,” "post" or "tweet," ask yourself what value your comment offers and what your motivation might be as an end result.

3. Do not post sensitive information of people caught in an affliction or tragedy.

4. Broadcasting unverified comments and statements that can be explosive and lead to social disorder and provocation.

5. Grievances and frustrations need not be vented on social media. Settle the issue privately. If you are posting a matter of public concern verify the authenticity and beware of slander and gossip.

6. Consider whether you will be comfortable if an Imam, elder, spouse, or mentor reads and shared your views?

7. Social media should be used effectively to maintain bonds with people by being respectful, helpful, engaging and authentic.

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, "It is (part) of the beauty of a man's Islam to leave what does not concern him." (Malik, Ahmad)

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, "He who truly believes in Allah and the last Day, should speak good or keep silent.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the governor as saying this on Sunday during a two-day induction programme organised for members-elect of the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly.

He said the plan for the establishment of the agency was part of his administration’s readiness to fight graft.

Makinde expressed readiness to waive his immunity and appear before the agency if found wanting.

“The first Executive Bill we are bringing to you is for us to set up an Anti-Corruption Agency for Oyo State. And I will waive my immunity, if I am found not to be above board, to face that agency,” he stated.

The governor also promised to work with the state assembly to guarantee financial autonomy to local government administration.

On security, Makinde said his government was determined to make the state one of the safest in the country by coming up with measures to tame insecurity.

He disclosed that his government already had a blueprint on the security sector, adding that his colleagues in the South/West were also working in the same direction.

According to him, the decision to proscribe the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) a few days after taking office was borne out of the resolve to ensure that the state was not held to ransom by a few individuals.

He implored the members-elect to work towards a cordial relationship with the executive.

Makinde disclosed that his administration had four major areas to focus on, which included economy, agriculture, poverty alleviation and infrastructure development.

“We want to expand our economy and lift as many of our people as possible out of poverty.

“We want to use agriculture to expand the economy. It is not by just saying it; we have to see real action and most of our infrastructure will be made to target our economy and we need to work together on this,” the governor stated.

IslamMissed Fasts From Ramadaan First Or The Six Days Of Shawwaal? by Lukgaf(op): 10:56am On Jun 07, 2019
Praise be to Allaah.

If she wants to earn the reward mentioned in the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), “Whoever fasts Ramadaan then follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime”

(reported by Muslim, no. 1984), then she should complete her Ramadaan fasts first, then follow it with six days of Shawwaal, so that the hadeeth with be applicable to her too, and she will gain the reward mentioned in it.

As regards the matter of permissibility, it is permissible for her to delay making up her Ramadaan fasts, provided that she makes them up before the next Ramadaan comes along.

Fasting six days of Shawwaal after the obligatory fast of Ramadaan is Sunnah Mustahabbah, not waajib. But it is recommended for the Muslim to fast six days of Shawwaal, and in this there is great virtue and an immense reward. Whoever fasts these six days will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year, as was reported in a saheeh hadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Abu Ayyoob (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadaan and follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.”

https://ukdlrqco1d-flywheel.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/shawwal-fast-600x400.jpg
(Narrated by Muslim, Abu Dawood, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah).
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained this when he said: “Whoever fasts for six days after (Eid) al-Fitr has completed the year: (whoever does a good deed (hasanah) will have ten hasanah like it).” According to another report: “Allaah has made for each hasanah ten like it, so a month is like fasting ten months, and fasting six days completes the year.”

(al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah. See also Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, 1/421). It was also narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah with the wording: “Fasting for the month of Ramadaan brings the reward of ten like it, and fasting for six days brings the reward of two months, and that is the fasting of the whole year.”
The Hanbali and Shaafa’i fuqaha’ explained that fasting six days of Shawwaal after fasting Ramadaan makes it as if one has fasted for an entire year of obligatory fasts, because the multiplication of the reward applies even to naafil fasts, because each hasanah brings the reward of ten like it.

Another of the important benefits of fasting six days of Shawwaal is that is makes up for any shortfall in a person's obligatory Ramadaan fasts, because no one is free of shortcomings or sins that have a negative effect on his fasting. On the Day of Resurrection, some of his naafil deeds will be taken to make up the shortcomings in his obligatory deeds, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The first thing for which people will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be their salaah (prayer). Our Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, will say to His angels – although He knows best – ‘Look at the salaah of My slave, whether it is complete or incomplete.’ If it is perfect, it will be recorded as perfect, and if something is lacking, He will say, ‘Look and see whether My slave did any voluntary (naafil) prayers.’ If he did some voluntary prayers, [Allaah] will say, Complete the obligatory actions of My slave from his voluntary actions.’ Then all his actions will be dealt with in a similar manner.”

(Narrated by Abu Dawood).
And Allaah knows best.

Asalam Alaekum Waramotulah Wabarakatuh and Eid Mubarak to you all.

The thread aims to allow you wish your Muslim friends and families on the occasion of Eid today around the world.

As we do that, we should remind one another how important is to rejoice today. Allah spare our lives since last year while many lives already taken(Alhamdulilah). Similarly, while we rejoice, we should not forget to pray for our brethren all over the world who because of one thing or the others could not celebrate today's Eid peacefully e.g. those in Hospitals, Prisons, ID camps , battle fields e.t.c.

Also, let me at this junction say one of the lessons from Eid is to rejoice and make others happy. So, try and give food to the poor, visit your friends and family.

In conclusion, we are just a step away from the auspicious month. Don't use the avenue of Eid to commit atrocities like drinking beers and alcohol, committing Zina and other sinful acts you have buried since the beginning of Ramadan.

I pray Allah in His infinite mercy allow us witness more of Eids on this Earth in peace, health, wealth and happiness.
IslamEtiquettes Of Eid: What To Do On The Day Of Eid? by Lukgaf(op): 10:00pm On Jun 03, 2019
Consequently to the announcement of the Sultan tonight regarding the sighting of the new crescent which indicate the end of Ramadan. Thus, Tomorrow InshaAllah is the First of Shawwal (Eid day). Find below of what are expected of you to do on the day of Eid (May Allah make it easy).

The Sunnahs that the Muslim should observe on the day of Eid are as follows:
1 – Doing ghusl before going out to the prayer.

It was narrated in a saheeh hadeeth in al-Muwatta’ and elsewhere that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar used to do ghusl on the day of al-Fitr before going out to the prayer-place in the morning. Al-Muwatta’ 428.

Al- Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said that the Muslims were unanimously agreed that it is mustahabb to do ghusl for Eid prayer.

The reason why it is mustahabb is the same reason as that for doing ghusl before Jumu’ah and other public gatherings. Rather on Eid the reason is even stronger.

2 – Eating before going out to pray on Eid al-Fitr and after the prayer on Eid al-Adha:

Part of the etiquette is not to go out to pray on Eid al-Fitr until one has eaten some dates, because of the hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari from Anas ibn Maalik, who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used not to go out on the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates… of which he would eat an odd number. Al-Bukhaari, 953.

It is mustahabb to eat before going out to emphasize the fact that it is forbidden to fast on that day and to demonstrate that the fast has ended.

Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) suggested that the reason for that was so as to ward off the possibility of adding to the fast, and to hasten to obey the command of Allaah. Al-Fath, 2/446

Whoever does not have any dates may break his fast with anything that is permissible.

But on Eid al-Adha it is mustahabb not to eat anything until one comes back from the prayer, so he should eat from the udhiyah if he has offered a sacrifice. If he is not going to offer a sacrifice there is nothing wrong with eating before the prayer.

3 – Takbeer on the day of Eid

This is one of the greatest Sunnahs on the day of Eid because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allaah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allaah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him”

[al-Baqarah 2:185]

It was narrated that al-Waleed ibn Muslim said: I asked al-Awzaa’i and Maalik ibn Anas about saying Takbeer out loud on the two Eids. They said, Yes, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar used to say it out loud on the day of al-Fitr until the imam came out (to lead the prayers).

It was narrated in a saheeh report that ‘Abd al-Rahmaan al-Sulami said, “They emphasized it more on the day of al-Fitr than the day of al-Adha.”. Wakee’ said, this refers to the takbeer. See Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 3/122/

Al-Daaraqutni and others narrated that on the morning of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, Ibn ‘Umar would strive hard in reciting takbeer until he came to the prayer place, then he would recite takbeer until the imam came out.

Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated with a saheeh isnaad that al-Zuhri said: The people used to recite Takbeer on Eid when they came out of their houses until they came to the prayer place, and until the imam came out. When the imam came out they fell silent, and when he said takbeer they said takbeer. See Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 1/121

Saying takbeer when coming out of one's house to the prayer place and until the imam came out was something that was well known among the salaf (early generations). This has been narrated by a number of scholars such as Ibn Abi Shaybah, ‘Abd a l-Razzaaq and al-Firyaabi in Ahkaam al-Eidayn from a group of the salaf. For example, Naafi’ ibn Jubayr used to recite takbeer and was astonished that the people did not do so, and he said, “Why do you not recite takbeer?”

Ibn Shihaab al-Zuhri (may Allaah have mercy on him) used to say, “The people used to recite takbeer from the time they came out of their houses until the imam came in.”

The time for takbeer on Eid al-Fitr starts from the night before Eid until the imam enters to lead the Eid prayer.

In the case of Eid al-Adha, the takbeer begins on the first day of Dhu’l-Hijjah and lasts until sunset on the last of the days of tashreeq.

Description of the takbeer:

It was narrated in the Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaybah with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he used to recite takbeer during the days of tashreeq:

Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, wa Allaahu akbar, Allaah akbar, wa Lillaah il-hamd (Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is most Great, there is no god but Allaah, Allaah is Most great, Allaah is most great, and to Allaah be praise).

It was also narrated elsewhere by Ibn Abi Shaybah with the same isnaad, but with the phrase “Allaahu akbar” repeated three times.

Al-Mahaamili narrated with a saheeh isnaad also from Ibn Mas’ood: “Allaahu akbaru kabeera, Allaahu akbaru kabeera, Allaahu akbar wa ajallu, Allaahu akbar wa Lillaah il-hamd (Allaah is Most Great indeed, Allaah is Most Great indeed, Allaah is most Great and Glorified, Allaah is Most Great and to Allaah be praise).” See al-Irwa’, 3/126.

4 – Offering congratulations

The etiquette of Eid also includes the congratulations and good wishes exchanged by people, no matter what the wording, such as saying to one another Taqabbala Allaah minna wa minkum (May Allaah accept (good deeds) from us and from you” or “Eid mubaarak” and other permissible expressions of congratulations.

It was narrated that Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: When the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) met one another on the day of Eid, they would say to one another, “May Allaah accept (good deeds) from us and from you.” Ibn Hajar said, its isnaad is hasan. Al-Fath, 2/446.

Offering congratulations was something that was well known among the Sahaabah, and scholars such as Imam Ahmad and others allowed it. There is evidence which suggests that it is prescribed to offer congratulations and good wishes on special occasions, and that the Sahaabah congratulated one another when good things happened, such as when Allaah accepted the repentance of a man, they went and congratulated him for that, and so on.

Undoubtedly these congratulations are among the noble characteristics among the Muslims.

The least that may be said concerning the subject of congratulations is that you should return the greetings of those who congratulate you on Eid, and keep quiet if others keep quiet, as Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: If anyone congratulates you, then respond, otherwise do not initiate it.

5 – Adorning oneself on the occasion of Eid.

It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said that ‘Umar took a brocade cloak that was for sale in the market and brought it to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and said, “O Messenger of Allaah, buy this and adorn yourself with it for Eid and for receiving the delegations.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him, “Rather this is the dress of one who has no share (of piety or of reward in the Hereafter)…” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 948.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) agreed with ‘Umar on the idea of adorning oneself for Eid, but he denounced him for choosing this cloak because it was made of silk.

It was narrated that Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had a cloak which he would wear on the two Eids and on Fridays. Saheeh Ibn Khuzaymah, 1756,

Al-Bayhaqi narrated with a saheeh isnaad that Ibn ‘Umar used to wear his best clothes on Eid.

So a man should wear the best clothes that he has when going out for Eid.

With regard to women, they should avoid adorning themselves when they go out for Eid, because they are forbidden to show off their adornments to non-mahram men. It is also haraam for a woman who wants to go out to put on perfume or to expose men to temptation, because they are only going out for the purpose of worship.

6 – Going to the prayer by one route and returning by another.

It was narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Eid, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to vary his route. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 986.

It was said that the reason for that was so that the two routes would testify for him on the Day of Resurrection, for the earth will speak on the Day of Resurrection and say what was done on it, both good and bad.

And it was said that it was in order to manifest the symbols of Islam on both routes, or to manifest the remembrance of Allaah (dhikr), or to annoy the hypocrites and Jews, and to scare them with the large number of people who were with him. And it was said that it was in order to attend to the people’s needs, to answer their questions, teach them, set an example and give charity to the needy, or to visit his relatives and uphold the ties of kinship.

And Allaah knows best.
