Reporter's view: There can only be one winner, right? City are playing devastating football and, on paper, this tie goes their way. It may well do, but the first leg will be no walk in St. Jakob-Park for the visitors. Basel have already beaten Manchester United at home this season, and their fans will guarantee a high-voltage atmosphere. Match Preview
Liverpool missed an opportunity to further strengthen their top-four hopes last week when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to rivals Tottenham and their frustrations were only exacerbated by a number of controversial refereeing decisions.
However, they will have to put that disappointment firmly behind them as they prepare to face a Southampton team that have been showing signs of gradual improvement in recent weeks.
There will be no shortage of gags in the build-up to the match with six former Southampton players returning to face their old club. Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren all arrived at Anfield from the Saints, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain began his career there.
The latest Reds raid on Southampton saw Virgil van Dijk make the trip north-west and, given the nature of his departure, the Netherlands international can expect a hostile reception on his return.
Of course, while Liverpool will be focused on the task at hand, they also have an away trip to Porto in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 to look forward to and Klopp will be keen for his players to come through the gauntlet unscathed.

After ending Manchester City’s unbeaten run in the last game week, Liverpool return to Premier League action tonight as they travel to Wales to take on struggling Swansea City. Though results and performances have improved under new manager Carlos Carvalhal, they are still rooted to the bottom of the table and are three points behind West Brom who are second from bottom.
Liverpool put five past Swansea when the two sides last met but haven’t necessarily dominated the Swans in their last few meetings. Swansea have picked up two wins in their last four games against the Reds, so the game could be a competitive one, especially considering Carvalhal’s side haven’t lost in their last three games.
Team news
Liverpool made quite a big statement in the early days of January by signing Virgil van Dijk and though they sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, the mood at Anfield is still pretty optimistic. Their record signing could return for the trip to Swansea. Mohamed Salah was a slight doubt a few days ago due to illness but he is expected to feature.

For Swansea, Tammy Abraham is unlikely to feature, so Wilfried Bony could continue up front. Renato Sanches and Mike van der Hoorn are back from injuries.
Probable line-ups
Jürgen Klopp’s rotation policy has served Liverpool well as they have successfully negotiated an avalanche of games without dropping their performance levels, which shows how deep their squad is. The likes of Ragnar Klavan, James Milner and Trent-Alexander Arnold have done well when they’ve been given the chance.
Against Swansea, we could see a couple of changes at the back. Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk could return in place of Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren. Though Alberto Moreno is back in training, we could see Andy Robertson keep his place after a stunning display against Manchester City. Adam Lallana could take Gini Wijnaldum’s place in the midfield trio alongside Emre Can and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
As for Swansea City, the return of Sanches will add more depth, but it’s unlikely we’ll see any one of them playing. Sanches hasn’t had a good spell at the club and against a team like Liverpool who press high up front, playing someone like Mesa who is more composed on the ball makes more sense.

Having missed the last two games through injury, Mohamed Salah is ready to hand Jurgen Klopp a major boost and make his return to Liverpool's starting lineup.

Merseyside derbies are always special occasions, but when Liverpool and Everton face off in one of the cup competitions it always seems to crank up the drama.

The two rivals from across Stanley Park come face-to-face for the second time in less than a month having played out a 1-1 draw in December.

Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho both missed the win over Burnley with injuries, and it remains to be seen as to whether either is fit to start at Anfield.

Both are seen as doubts heading into the derby with thigh and groin injuries respectively in what would be a major blow for Jurgen Klopp.

Jordan Henderson (hamstring), Nathaniel Clyne (back) and Alberto Moreno (ankle) are all definitely ruled out while Daniel Sturridge remains a doubt with a knock.

​​​​​​​Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson remains unavailable for his side's home game against Leicester on Saturday.

Henderson missed the Boxing Day win over Swansea with a hamstring injury and no date has been put on his return. That victory saw Liverpool stretch their unbeaten run to 11 Premier League games - their joint-longest such run under Jurgen Klopp. They last went 12 without defeat in March 2015 [a run of 13].

Liverpool have scored 75 goals in their 29 games in all competitions so far this season - their highest-ever total at this stage of a campaign as a top-flight club. Their highest tally after 30 games as a top-flight side was 75 in 1980-81, so one goal against Leicester will beat that. Roberto Firmino has four goals in his last three games, and has earned particular praise from his manager.

Jurgen Klopp reacts to the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton who will join the club in the new year.

"I appreciate Roberto's effort and performance always," said Klopp. "I am happy that he scored twice [against Swansea] but I could not say how many he has scored so far in the season because I feel he is always involved and always in and around the dangerous situations for the opponents."

Leicester are now winless in four matches in league and cup and more worrying than that is their tendency to concede from corners and free-kicks. Of the 30 Premier League goals that Leicester have let in this season, 13 have been from set-pieces so Claude Puel says his team must improve in these situations if they are to address their mini-slide.

"We need more concentration, more focus and more aggression from set-plays," Puel said. "The game [against Watford] was decided by set-pieces and that is where we have some things to correct."

I'm unsure of Leicester again. They went 1-0 up against Watford, who couldn't win for toffee, and then end up getting beat! The way Liverpool are playing, I really don't think the Leicester defence are going to live with them.

I must say, £75m is a lot of money for Virgil van Dijk, but they'll be getting a lot of money for Philippe Coutinho if he goes too. I do like Van Dijk, and they need someone like him. I guess that's how much centre-halves are now, it just shows you how many kids want to play centre-forward these days. As Jose Mourinho said, full-backs are mega-expensive now too.
