Jurgen Klopp's men have a crucial few days coming up, with the top-four race heating up and the Champions League returning Liverpool will look to leapfrog Tottenham back into third place in the Premier League by beating Southampton at St Mary's on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp's side slipped back down to fourth following Spurs' north London derby win over Arsenal on Saturday, but three points against the Saints will see the Reds reclaim the advantage in the intense race for a Champions League finish. Just a single point separates the Merseyside outfit from Chelsea in fifth, so there is plenty at stake and they will be eager to avoid slipping up, particularly with a Champions League last-16 tie against Porto to come three days later. RELATED Southampton, meanwhile, find themselves teetering perilously close to the relegation zone but, having ended an 11-game winless streak in the league last week, they will attempt to push further up the table with a home win. Betting & Match Odds Liverpool are favourites to win, with dabblebet offering odds of 4/5 on them. Southampton are priced at 7/2 and a draw is available at 11/4. Click here to see all of dabblebet's offers for the game, including goalscoring markets, correct score predictions and more. Match Preview Liverpool missed an opportunity to further strengthen their top-four hopes last week when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to rivals Tottenham and their frustrations were only exacerbated by a number of controversial refereeing decisions. However, they will have to put that disappointment firmly behind them as they prepare to face a Southampton team that have been showing signs of gradual improvement in recent weeks. There will be no shortage of gags in the build-up to the match with six former Southampton players returning to face their old club. Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren all arrived at Anfield from the Saints, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain began his career there. The latest Reds raid on Southampton saw Virgil van Dijk make the trip north-west and, given the nature of his departure, the Netherlands international can expect a hostile reception on his return. Of course, while Liverpool will be focused on the task at hand, they also have an away trip to Porto in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 to look forward to and Klopp will be keen for his players to come through the gauntlet unscathed. TEAM NEWS Huddersfield midfielder Danny Williams was substituted with a dead leg in the FA Cup draw against Birmingham and his fitness will be assessed. Terence Kongolo is expected to overcome a minor problem. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could start, having played half an hour in Saturday's FA Cup defeat by West Brom after four weeks out with a hamstring problem. Ragnar Klavan and Adam Lallana have not recovered from muscle injuries. MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES Steve Bower: "The very good friends reunited theme will have to wait until after the match for David Wagner and Jurgen Klopp. Talk of teammates, best men and godfathers offers the fixture a colourful backdrop but the harsh reality is that both managers desperately need the points. "I watched Liverpool go out of the FA Cup on Saturday, following on from their defeat at Swansea, in a lacklustre manner - with defending that is still leaving many, Klopp included, scratching their heads. "They have to maintain their Champions League push with a more solid performance in West Yorkshire. "Huddersfield's romantic start to their first ever Premier League season seems a distant memory. They will kick-off just two points above the relegation zone and six games without a win; it's a huge week that ends with a trip to Old Trafford." Twitter: @SteveBowercomm WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY Huddersfield head coach David Wagner: "Liverpool have lost two games in a row. They look vulnerable at the minute. "Does it mean we will be successful? No. Does it mean we have a chance? Absolutely. "We have in every game, especially here at the John Smith's Stadium, and if there's a chance we will be there to grab it with both hands." Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "Yes, it is right we didn't play well at Swansea but a few days before we played fantastic against Man City. "It is how football is, how life is. Two weeks ago we had an 18-game unbeaten run and then you lose twice and everything feels different. "We have to get immediately back on the winning track and we need results to reach our targets, we know that, but the solution is not out there in the transfer market in this moment." Predict the score for this match and the rest of this round's Premier League fixtures in our Predictor game. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head Huddersfield host Liverpool in the top flight for the first time in 46 years. The Terriers are winless in 11 meetings in all competitions since a 1-0 home victory in Division Two in 1959 (D3, L8). Huddersfield Town Huddersfield could lose their opening four league matches of a calendar year for the first time since 1988. They have equalled their longest Premier League winless run of six matches, and could also equal their longest losing streak of four. They could lose successive top-flight home games for the first time since a run of three defeats in a row in 1971-72. The Terriers have conceded 30 second-half goals in the Premier League this season, the most in the division. They could become just the second promoted club to win home Premier League games against Liverpool and Manchester United in the same season, after Portsmouth in 2003-04. Tom Ince will celebrate his 26th birthday on the day of this match. He began his senior career at Liverpool but made only one competitive appearance. Liverpool Jurgen Klopp could lose consecutive league fixtures as a Liverpool manager for the first time. Liverpool have not suffered successive league defeats since September 2015. Klopp and David Wagner were team-mates at Mainz. Wagner went on to take charge of Borussia Dortmund's reserve side when Klopp was head coach of the first team. Mo Salah has 18 Premier League goals in 24 games. The fewest games needed by any player to register 20 Premier League goals for Liverpool was 27, achieved by Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge. Virgil van Dijk has made 12 Premier League starts this season, for Southampton and Liverpool, but his team has kept only one clean sheet. After ending Manchester City’s unbeaten run in the last game week, Liverpool return to Premier League action tonight as they travel to Wales to take on struggling Swansea City. Though results and performances have improved under new manager Carlos Carvalhal, they are still rooted to the bottom of the table and are three points behind West Brom who are second from bottom. Liverpool put five past Swansea when the two sides last met but haven’t necessarily dominated the Swans in their last few meetings. Swansea have picked up two wins in their last four games against the Reds, so the game could be a competitive one, especially considering Carvalhal’s side haven’t lost in their last three games. Team news Liverpool made quite a big statement in the early days of January by signing Virgil van Dijk and though they sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, the mood at Anfield is still pretty optimistic. Their record signing could return for the trip to Swansea. Mohamed Salah was a slight doubt a few days ago due to illness but he is expected to feature. For Swansea, Tammy Abraham is unlikely to feature, so Wilfried Bony could continue up front. Renato Sanches and Mike van der Hoorn are back from injuries. Probable line-ups Jürgen Klopp’s rotation policy has served Liverpool well as they have successfully negotiated an avalanche of games without dropping their performance levels, which shows how deep their squad is. The likes of Ragnar Klavan, James Milner and Trent-Alexander Arnold have done well when they’ve been given the chance. Against Swansea, we could see a couple of changes at the back. Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk could return in place of Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren. Though Alberto Moreno is back in training, we could see Andy Robertson keep his place after a stunning display against Manchester City. Adam Lallana could take Gini Wijnaldum’s place in the midfield trio alongside Emre Can and Oxlade-Chamberlain. As for Swansea City, the return of Sanches will add more depth, but it’s unlikely we’ll see any one of them playing. Sanches hasn’t had a good spell at the club and against a team like Liverpool who press high up front, playing someone like Mesa who is more composed on the ball makes more sense. Probable Liverpool XI: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson; Can, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Mane, Firmino, Salah Probable Swansea XI: Fabianski; Olsson, Mawson, Bartley, van der Hoorn; Ki, Mesa, Carroll, Narsingh, Ayew; Bony http://madaboutepl.net/2018/01/swansea-city-vs-liverpool-preview-team-news-probable-lineups-odds/ |

What's the team news? Liverpool Liverpool could give Virgil van Dijk his first Premier League start for the club after making a goalscoring debut in their FA Cup win over Everton. Having missed the last two games through injury, Mohamed Salah is ready to hand Jurgen Klopp a major boost and make his return to Liverpool's starting lineup. "If nothing happens in the moment, Mo is back [on Sunday]. He is training completely normal and that's very important for us," said Klopp in his Friday press conference. Mohamed Salah has missed Liverpool's last two games through injury CREDIT: REUTERS Salah, who has scored 17 goals in the league so far this season, has recovered from a groin strain and is fit to take his place in Klopp's XI to play Man City. Left-back Alberto Moreno could also make his return after missing all of Liverpool's festive fixtures but Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge remain sidelined through injury. “Hendo is back on the pitch and is training, but is not in team training so far. Alberto Moreno was in team training yesterday for the first time. Sunday might be a little early, he needs to do proper training,” said Klopp. Reset Pick your Liverpool team to play Man City Share this with your friends Facebook Twitter WhatsA Player Player Player Player Player Player Player Player Player Player Player Liverpool are still waiting to hear from the FA after Mason Holgate accused Roberto Firmino of using racist language during last week's FA Cup third-round tie at Anfield. Pep Guardiola on Sergio Aguero With Gabriel Jesus not being fit, we have to protect him a bit.Sergio is on fire, scoring goals again, but always in his career he scores goals. But we create chances For me it is an honour to be able to train a player like Aguero. I understand that the moments when you do not play are sad. His great quality is in the area. In the first half he was not very involved, but in the second half he had the ability to score two goals. If we want to win something this year, the one that comes, and the others, the presence of Aguero is fundamental. Jurgen Klopp on Philippe Coutinho's move to Barcelona Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his team-mates this was a move he was desperate to make happen." The club did everything within our means to convince Philippe that remaining part of Liverpool was as attractive as moving to Spain. It is with great reluctance that we - as a team and club - prepare to say farewell to a good friend, a wonderful person and a fantastic player in Coutinho. The relationship we have for him means with a heavy heart we wish him well. Klopp on Manchester City It’s interesting to play against City. They play really good and if you don’t respect that, you have a problem. But if you are not brave in your game, you will also have a problem. You need to show up. In his column for Sky Sports Football, Thierry Henry insisted Jurgen Klopp's side have enough firepower to n "You still have Firmino, Salah, Mane - I mean, this is not a bad front three," said the Sky Sports pundit. "You would obviously prefer to have that front with Coutinho as a No 10. Thierry Henry reckons Liverpool could hand Man City their first Premier League defeat of the season CREDIT: GETTY IMAGES "But [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain is there, [Adam] Lallana is back, but obviously you are going to miss Coutinho. The amount of goals he has scored from outside the box is just ridiculous. You have to move on though and Liverpool will always be Liverpool." So yes, there are all the signs that are there to say that Liverpool might be the team to stop City," Key stats (via Opta) Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola were fierce rivals during their time in the Bundesliga CREDIT: REUTERS What are the odds? Liverpool 2/1 Man City 5/4 Draw 11/4 What's our prediction? Jason Burt: City have lost on their last four visits to Anfield and there is a sense that if one Premier League team can beat them this season, and prevent them being the new ‘Invincibles’ then it is Liverpool. There is an even greater sense that this is highly unlikely to end goalless. Both will go for it. Everything you need to know ahead of the FA Cup third round clash at Anfield on Friday evening Merseyside derbies are always special occasions, but when Liverpool and Everton face off in one of the cup competitions it always seems to crank up the drama. The two rivals from across Stanley Park come face-to-face for the second time in less than a month having played out a 1-1 draw in December. Both teams have struggled for consistency since then, and no doubt Toffees boss Sam Allardyce will have a gameplan to stop Jurgen Klopp's free-flowing attacking style in its tracks. Related Torres, Suarez & now Coutinho? The stars Liverpool have lost to Europe's elite Rivaldo backs Barcelona target Coutinho to thrive at Camp Nou Liverpool will never get back to the top by selling players like Coutinho Barca boss Valverde coy over 'great player' Coutinho's future LIVERPOOL INJURIES Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho both missed the win over Burnley with injuries, and it remains to be seen as to whether either is fit to start at Anfield. Both are seen as doubts heading into the derby with thigh and groin injuries respectively in what would be a major blow for Jurgen Klopp. Jordan Henderson (hamstring), Nathaniel Clyne (back) and Alberto Moreno (ankle) are all definitely ruled out while Daniel Sturridge remains a doubt with a knock. Philippe Coutinho Mohamed Salah Liverpool SUSPENSIONS Neither side have any suspension concerns for this fixture. LIVERPOOL POTENTIAL STARTING LINE-UP Having been left on the bench against Burnley, Roberto Firmino should return to the starting XI to lead the line. He is likely to be flanked by Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain should both Salah and Coutinho fail to shake off their respective injury problems. Virgil van Dijk is eligible to make his debut but it remains to be seen whether he will be thrown into such a big match to make his Reds bow. Adam Lallana earned his first start of the season against Burnley but he is likely to return to the bench with James Milner set to be recalled. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson remains unavailable for his side's home game against Leicester on Saturday. Henderson missed the Boxing Day win over Swansea with a hamstring injury and no date has been put on his return. That victory saw Liverpool stretch their unbeaten run to 11 Premier League games - their joint-longest such run under Jurgen Klopp. They last went 12 without defeat in March 2015 [a run of 13]. Liverpool have scored 75 goals in their 29 games in all competitions so far this season - their highest-ever total at this stage of a campaign as a top-flight club. Their highest tally after 30 games as a top-flight side was 75 in 1980-81, so one goal against Leicester will beat that. Roberto Firmino has four goals in his last three games, and has earned particular praise from his manager. Jurgen Klopp reacts to the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton who will join the club in the new year. "I appreciate Roberto's effort and performance always," said Klopp. "I am happy that he scored twice [against Swansea] but I could not say how many he has scored so far in the season because I feel he is always involved and always in and around the dangerous situations for the opponents." Leicester are now winless in four matches in league and cup and more worrying than that is their tendency to concede from corners and free-kicks. Of the 30 Premier League goals that Leicester have let in this season, 13 have been from set-pieces so Claude Puel says his team must improve in these situations if they are to address their mini-slide. "We need more concentration, more focus and more aggression from set-plays," Puel said. "The game [against Watford] was decided by set-pieces and that is where we have some things to correct." Watch a preview of Saturday's Premier League fixtures including Chelsea against Stoke, Southampton's trip to Man Utd and Liverpool v Leicester. Team news Left-back Alberto Moreno could miss another three games with ankle trouble, Nathaniel Clyne is still sidelined by back trouble and forward Daniel Sturridge is a doubt after illness. Leicester's Daniel Amartey is available to face Liverpool after he was banned for Boxing Day's 2-1 defeat at Watford. The utility man was sent off after collecting two yellow cards in 16 minutes in last weekend's 2-2 draw against Manchester United but is back, although Robert Huth (ankle), Danny Simpson (hamstring) and Matty James (Achilles) remain out for boss Puel. Alberto Moreno could be absent with an ankle injury Alberto Moreno could be absent with an ankle injury Opta stats Liverpool suffered an EFL Cup defeat to Leicester City earlier this season (0-2 in September), before beating them in the Premier League four days later. They haven't lost twice to the Foxes in a single season since 1998-99 The last three Premier League meetings between these two clubs have seen 14 goals scored (4.7 goals per game) Liverpool have lost three competitive games against Leicester City under Jurgen Klopp - against no side have they lost more often during the German manager's reign at the club Six of the eight goals that Leicester have scored in their last four Premier League meetings with Liverpool have been via Jamie Vardy Jamie Vardy has scored (six) and been involved in (seven) more Premier League goals against Liverpool than he has versus any other opponent in the competition. Daniel Sturridge is once again doubtful Daniel Sturridge is once again doubtful Merson's prediction I'm unsure of Leicester again. They went 1-0 up against Watford, who couldn't win for toffee, and then end up getting beat! The way Liverpool are playing, I really don't think the Leicester defence are going to live with them. I must say, £75m is a lot of money for Virgil van Dijk, but they'll be getting a lot of money for Philippe Coutinho if he goes too. I do like Van Dijk, and they need someone like him. I guess that's how much centre-halves are now, it just shows you how many kids want to play centre-forward these days. As Jose Mourinho said, full-backs are mega-expensive now too.
