Liverpool vs West Ham preview: Team news and likely line-ups for Premier League showdown
LIVERPOOL host West Ham on Sunday as the Premier League returns.
By James Phillips / Published 10th August 2018
The Reds have enjoyed a brilliant pre-season, thrashing Napoli 5-0 last weekend and recording victories over Manchester United and Manchester City too.
But the serious business begins this weekend, with a new-look West Ham side providing the opposition at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp has signed several new players this summer, and we expect three of them may start on Sunday - namely Fabinho, Alisson and Naby Keita.
Xherdan Shaqiri may find it hard getting into the starting line-up despite impressing in pre-season, unless Klopp fancies reinventing the winger as a central midfielder.

Dejan Lovren is unlikely to feature as he only returned to training recently, following his involvement as Croatia reached the World Cup final.
Captain Jordan Henderson is also unlikely to play after figuring in the England side that reached the final weekend of the tournament, although he did appear in Tuesday’s friendly with Torino.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was also involved with the Three Lions but only played once and returned early to join Liverpool’s pre-season camp in France last week.
Klopp’s biggest problem comes at centre-back, where Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez all have minor injuries as they bid to partner Virgil van Dijk in Lovren’s absence.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss the entire season, meaning Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, Adam Lallana and Henderson will battle it out to start alongside new boys Fabinho and Keita in the midfield three.
The front three pick themselves with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah having all reached superstar status at Anfield.
Daniel Sturridge, however, has enjoyed a good pre-season and is likely to play a role from the bench.
For Manuel Pellegrini and West Ham, there are several questions to be answered.

Firstly, what formation will he play?
The former Manchester City boss is known to favour a 4-4-2, although he played 4-4-1-1 for some of pre-season.
We expect him to go with the former in a bid to get Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic forming a partnership for the season ahead.
Secondly, which new signings will start?
The Hammers were very busy in the transfer window, and we think as many as six new boys could make the line-up at the weekend.
Lukasz Fabianski is set to be the new first choice goalkeeper, with Ryan Fredericks battling it out with Pablo Zabaleta at right-back.
Either Issa Diop or Fabian Balbuena should partner Angelo Ogbonna at centre-back, with Arthur Masuaku at left-back.
Felipe Anderson and Jack Wilshere should start in midfield, with Pedro Obiang and Declan Rice competing to play alongside them.
Andriy Yarmolenko is a slight doubt with a hip injury but we expect him to make it.
Winston Reid, Manuel Lanzini and Andy Carroll are long-term absentees while new striker Lucas Perez is unlikely to be considered to start just yet.
Liverpool expected line-up (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Keita; Salah, Mane, Firmino
West Ham expected line-up (4-4-2):
Fabianski; Fredericks, Diop, Ogbonna, Masuaku; Anderson, Obiang, Wilshere, Yarmolenko; Arnautovic, Hernandez
Ladbrokes odds: Liverpool 2/9, West Ham 12/1, Draw 5/1

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: UCL Final : Liverpool Vs Real Madrid On May 26 , 2018 At 7:45 Pm by luvola(op): 9:25pm On May 21, 2018
R eal Madrid are six days away from their third successive Champions League final, and whilst Zinedine Zidane knows the vast majority of his strategy, there is one final decision for him to make before arriving in Kiev.
This decision is related to which of Gareth Bale, Isco and Karim Benzema will start against Liverpool with only two spots available to be filled.
The 2017/18 season has been a disaster for Los Blancos, their LaLiga campaign has been nothing short of pitiful when you consider their resources, however, Zidane can rectify such a damaging season with victory at the NSC Olimpiyskiy.
Until that point, the French coach has to really force himself to think of the combination of players which is best for the team.
Gareth Bale has found form at the right time and is now in contention to play a role, whilst Karim Benzema simply can't find the back of the net.
Common sense may suggest that on form you would select the Welsh international over the ailing Frenchman, however, he remains one of the former Juventus' midfielder's most trusted lieutenants.
Isco was given the nod in Cardiff for the 2017 final, and despite a mixed season in the Spanish capital, he could play the same role in Kiev.
The former Malaga playmaker can make things happen, but when Liverpool aren't in possession of the ball they are arguably at their most dangerous.
Jurgen Klopp's infamous Gegenpressing may well dictate that Zidane has to battle them head-on with Bale's directness.
The longer Los Blancos try and keep possession, the more at risk they are, Isco may well prove to be dispensable in such a situation.
Whilst Benzema's goal return has been abysmal this season, he offers a focal point in attack that allows Cristiano Ronaldo to thrive,
creating space for the Portuguese forward.
Should the French coach opt for a 4-4-2 formation then it would be Bale and Benzema who are in the starting line-up, and Isco would once again be on the bench.
The former Tottenham Hotspur forward scored against Villarreal in the final LaLiga match of the season and appears to have rediscovered his confidence, despite the constant stories linking him with a summer transfer.
He wasn't able to do enough to start against Bayern Munich at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, but the situation is different now.
He's scoring goals and that's something that the European champions may need against such a relentless attacking unit.

Liverpool are aiming to secure their spot in the top four when they host Brighton on the final day of the season, live on Sky Sports .
Some good form from Chelsea in recent weeks has put pressure on the Reds, but just a point on Sunday is likely guarantee their fourth-place finish and Champions League football next term with a far superior goal difference in their favour.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to direct all the focus on to Sunday's final match against Brighton, however, the awards season and pending Champions League final has become something of a distraction.
"You want to be really focused," he added. "The season now for most of the teams in the league is a nice time but for us it is work.
Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool
"All the awards around are really deserved but hopefully the last one was yesterday and now it is about playing the game on Sunday."
It has been a successful first season in the Premier League for Brighton, who have the magic 40 points on the board, and Chris Hughton says he is now looking to the summer to improve his squad further.
"We have a good squad and you always want to improve. We are a club who has to work within financial guidelines which work best for the club. We just want to continue to recruit well," he said. "Our next step always has to be to stay in the league - we're still learning and improving and we'll try to add to the squad where we feel necessary.
Manchester City 3-1 Brighton
"We've tried to enjoy the season as much as we can. I have been able to enjoy it on the whole, apart from the first few weeks we haven't been in the bottom three. The last week is the best for me because this is where we wanted to be."
Team news
Adam Lallana could return to Liverpool's squad for the final match of the season.
The England midfielder has not played since the end of March because of a hamstring injury but has been in full training for a week and is set for a comeback.
Adam Lallana has returned from injury for Liverpool
Defender Joe Gomez is the latest player to be ruled out before the end of the season after undergoing ankle surgery this week.
Brighton manager Chris Hughton has no fresh selection concerns. Glenn Murray is pushing for a recall at Anfield after being left on the bench in favour of Leonardo Ulloa for the midweek defeat at Man City.
Record signing Jurgen Locadia and Israel international Beram Kayal are in contention for rare starts, but Steve Sidwell, who has not featured all season, remains sidelined through injury.
Opta stats
Liverpool have won five of their last six meetings with Brighton in all competitions (D1), netting 22 goals across these six games (3.7 per game).
The Reds are unbeaten in their last 21 home league games against promoted sides (W16 D5), since a 1-2 loss vs Blackpool in 2010-11.
If Liverpool avoid defeat, it will be the seventh time they've remained unbeaten at home across an entire top-flight campaign - more than any other side have done so.
No side has scored fewer away Premier League goals this season than Brighton (10, same as West Brom).
Lewis Dunk has scored an own goal in both of his previous meetings with Liverpool for Brighton - in a 6-1 defeat in the FA Cup in February 2012, and in the reverse fixture in December (5-1 defeat).
Mohamed Salah needs just one goal to set a new record for most Premier League goals in a 38-game season (currently 31). However, the Egyptian hasn't scored in two consecutive Premier League games for only the second time this season (also two in October).
Murray has been involved in a goal in all three of his Premier League meetings with Liverpool, scoring twice and assisting another.
Merson's predictions
I know they've got the Champions League final coming up but it's a couple of weeks away and they'll want to finish on a high and make sure they bag that top-four spot.
Brighton have been great - absolutely outstanding - but they'll be on the beach now surely.
PAUL PREDICTS: 3-0

Reporter's view : Roma will be out to disprove the cliche that lightning does not strike twice in the same place. The 3-0 win that eliminated Barcelona in the last round was a bolt from the blue, and they need another at the Stadio Olimpico to overturn Liverpool's 5-2 lead. The belief in the city is surprisingly high for such a mammoth undertaking, given recent precedent, and storm clouds are indeed forecast to move in.

We've got to want this comeback and give it everything – we've got to do something truly great. [We must have] belief and with this mentality, with these fans and this passion around the team, try to perform another miracle – and saying miracle is perfectly fine. I'm glad we've got this far, but I'm never one to settle for that. Our ambition should be to get to Kyiv.
Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool manager
We are here to fight for our dreams. A lot of people might think Roma have only to win 3-0, but that's quite a result. We'll be there as well – we won't stay in the dressing room! This is what you want, to play with big stakes and for big things. The story of Liverpool in Rome is great, but nobody thinks it helps a lot that our grandfathers won here. It's just a game in a wonderful stadium, in a wonderful city, against a very strong side. If you really want to win, you have to accept that you could lose. You've got to be really brave. Watch

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expects Mohamed Salah will not get "friendly" treatment from his former Roma team-mates during Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg at Anfield.

Salah scored 34 goals in 83 appearances for the Italian club before joining Liverpool last summer in a £34m deal.

Tuesday's game (19:45 BST) will be the first time the Egypt forward, 25, has faced his former colleagues.

"Mo will know pretty soon they are not his team-mates any more," said Klopp.

"Italian defenders are famous for not having friendly games - but he can strike back in football terms."

Salah has scored 41 goals in 46 appearances for Liverpool and on Sunday was named Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year.

Five-time winners Liverpool are attempting to reach a Champions League final for the first time since 2007.

Klopp asks fans to 'show respect' to Roma
'Liverpool fading? If anything they're getting stronger'

Klopp wary after Roma's Barcelona comeback

While Liverpool beat Premier League champions Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, Roma overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit to knock out Spanish giants Barcelona.

"Nobody thought after the first result that they can have the kind of comeback against Barcelona because it's not usually possible," said Klopp.

"They can make seven or eight changes for their last league game and look comfortable and win which is a big advantage. But then being at Anfield is an advantage to us as well.

"They have a full squad available. They have different options offensively, a strong defence, the wingers or wing-backs are strong, it all looks settled, fit and experienced.

"It's a semi-final which is a big thing for them like us. You will see two excited teams and that's good for football."

Klopp rested Roberto Firmino, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain for the 2-2 draw against West Brom on Saturday, and all are expected to return on Tuesday.

Roma, who are third in Serie A - 18 points behind leaders Juventus, also rested some of their key players at the weekend, with Aleksandar Kolarov, Alessandro Florenzi, Daniele de Rossi and Edin Dzeko sitting out the 3-0 win at Spal.

The quartet should return on Tuesday, and former Manchester City defender Kolarov says his side will not be focusing solely on Salah.

"Against Barcelona we played as a team, we did not focus on Lionel Messi, and by playing in this way we can achieve great things," he said.

"It is not about stopping one player. Liverpool are not only Salah, they have a number of good players."
Roma should not be underestimated - analysis

Italian football journalist James Horncastle on the BBC Euro Leagues Football Show:

"Liverpool are the team going into this under pressure as they're so close to the final now. Their fans believe and expect them to get there. This is a club who are much more part of European football's nobility than Roma are.

"With Roma, the belief that has forged within this team should not be underestimated.

"Liverpool think they have a sense of destiny playing the team they beat in 1984, that they have won this competition several times. Roma now look at it and think, 'if we can come back from 4-1 down to Barcelona, there's nothing we can't do. Nobody expected us to be here so we'll just for it.'

"Roma coach Eusebio di Francesco is unwilling to compromise on his ideals. I think they will stay true to themselves at Anfield, press high, play with a high line and compress the space."

'Liverpool are not just Salah'

Roma coach Eusebio di Francesco says his side will not sit back against Liverpool in the first leg and insisted there is more to focus on than just the threat of Salah.

"They have to do well to force us deep," said Di Francesco. "The decisive thing will be for us to stay compact.

"Liverpool are not just Salah. The front three combine really well together and that's not an insignificant factor.

"We haven't prepared this game with one player in mind."
'Standout' Salah wins PFA Player of the Year award

Di Francesco also said his team would not be intimated by the atmosphere created at "incredible" Anfield and urged his players to "make the most of Liverpool's possible weaknesses".

"The beauty of English stadiums is amazing," said the Italian, whose side are third in Serie A, 18 points behind leaders Juventus.

"In Italy we're not used to having the fans right behind us in this way. Liverpool will have the fans on their side - but our away fans will support us.

"Liverpool are different to Barcelona in terms of pace and we need to play well to win and have even more of a team-mentality."
Salah to equal Gerrard record? Pre-match stats

This is the sixth European meeting between Liverpool and Roma and the first since March 2002. Of the previous five, Liverpool have won two, with two draws and one Roma win.
Liverpool are yet to lose to Roma in the European Cup/Champions League in three meetings (W1 D2), with one of those draws in the 1984 final, which Liverpool won 4-2 on penalties in the Stadio Olimpico.
This is Liverpool's 10th appearance in the semi-final of the European Cup/Champions League - they've progressed to the final on seven of the previous nine occasions, losing only in 1964-65 against Inter Milan and in 2007-08 against Chelsea.
Roma are appearing in their first European semi-final for 27 years, when they faced Brondby in the Uefa Cup in 1990-91. Their only previous European Cup/Champions League semi-final was in 1983-84, when they eliminated Dundee United to face Liverpool in the final.
Liverpool have not won the first leg of a European semi-final in any of their past seven attempts (D3 L4), since a 4-0 win over Panathinaikos in the European Cup in 1984-85.
The Reds have scored 33 goals in this season's competition, the most by an English team in a single Champions League campaign.
Roma have won just one of their past 14 away Champions League games (D5 L8), a 2-1 win at Qarabag earlier this season.
The Yellow and Reds have also won just one of their 19 European away matches in England (D7 L11), although that win was at Anfield in February 2001 in the Uefa Cup - current manager Eusebio di Francesco was an unused sub in that game.
Two of the three players to have had a hand in at least 10 goals in the Champions League this season are Liverpool players - Roberto Firmino (8 goals and 4 assists) and Mohamed Salah (8 goals and 2 assists).
Edin Dzeko has been involved in six of Roma's past eight away Champions League goals (5 goals, 1 assist). The Bosnian has scored two goals in his past three starts at Anfield against Liverpool (both for Man City in January 2012 and March 2015).
Mo Salah has scored in each of his past four Champions League starts for Liverpool - the only Reds player to score in five consecutively was Steven Gerrard between October 2007 and February 2008.
Roma are without a clean sheet in their last 26 away Champions League matches; the second longest run in the competition's history behind only Celtic, who went 30 away matches without one between 2001 and 2016.

A deft finish brought the former Roma ace level with some famous names although there was ultimately disappointment for Jurgen Klopp's side
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has equalled the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry's record for Premier League goals in a season.
The Egypt international star netted his 31st of the campaign on Saturday, the second for the Reds in their fixture away to West Brom.
The attacker clipped a neat shot into the net after being set up by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to push Jurgen Klopp's men two goals clear at the Hawthorns, though the match finished in a 2-2 draw.
RELATED
It was a strike that continued what has been a dizzying run of form from the 25-year-old, who arrived at the club from Roma last summer for a fee of around €42 million.
Since netting on his Premier League debut - a 3-3 draw against Watford - the attacker has not stopped scoring.
Indeed, his form has been exceptional in the second half of the campaign. Including his goal against WBA, he has struck 13 times in his last 10 Premier League outings, with Manchester United the only club to keep him at bay.
Since scoring against Bournemouth before Christmas, he has either scored or provided an assist for a team-mate in every league fixture he has played subsequently.
Suarez, meanwhile, achieved the mark of 31 goals in the 2013-14 season, when he played 33 league fixtures - exactly the same number as the Egyptian.

The Uruguay international completed a move to Barcelona the following summer and has since won two league titles - probably to become three - and the 2014-15 Champions League.
Salah joins a select list of Premier League stars to have scored 31 goals in a single season, the most managed by one player since the division switched to a 38-game season in 1995-6.
Andy Cole and Alan Shearer hold the overall record, having hit 34 times in 1993-4 and 1994-5 respectively under the old 42-game format.
Salah is a leading candidate to win the PFA Player of the Year award, which will be announced on Sunday, with fans in his homeland so rapt that two big league fixtures have been moved to allow supporters to watch .
He is also leading the way in the race for the Golden Boot, but Klopp has said he does not want the Reds to concentrate their efforts on allowing him to win that . Salah joins Ronaldo, Suarez & Shearer as he equals Premier League scoring
