Before the lockdown I did go to church on Sunday. Like I have said elsewhere, pastors are storytellers telling comforting tales of hope and perseverance. No magic is hidden in it, all men must do what men do to survive. Manna will not fall from heaven.

Wrong as usual.

When it comes to old movies, directors are my top priority. After directors, the dates come next, and finally the actors. This is how I sort old movies.
grin

I'm still coming for you. Just about done with The Running Man

Well, I associate the first Alien movie with Ridley Scott, and the second Alien movie (it aged well too) with James Cameron. I associate Sigourney Weaver with these movies as well, but as a secondary.
LIES!! LIESSS!!!

Unless, you are one of the few people in the world that lack the ability to conjure up mental images, the first image that appears in your mind when you are asked about the alien movie is Ellen Ripley and or the Alien. Guy, don't fall my hand abeg.

It is like asking me about Total Recall movie. The first things that come to my mind- woman with 3 breasts, Schwarzenegger and that pregnant man-alien-child.

I said, "Unless the lead actor was a larger than life figure of historical significance" remember?

Right now, Tom Cruise and Reeves qualified, but will they still be relevant 100 years from now? I don't think so. Without important awards to remember them by, those two are gonna end up like that lead actor in North by Northwest.
Who remembers awards?

People remember cultural and iconic moments. From now till I die, I cant forget the Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) taking arms against the Alien. I cant forget Marty Mcfly's (Micheal Fox) Nike Airforce 1s in Back to the future. Those are iconic moments that will be revisited as long as the internet and digital libraries exist.
TV/MoviesRe: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by MacCantStopMe: 11:35pm On Apr 17, 2020
Bratking:
If you're asked about North by Northwest, what's the first name that pops into your mind?

Mine is Alfred Hitchcock. I can't even recall the name of the lead actor, and I've seen this film twice. Old films are associated with directors more than the actors, bruv. Unless the lead actor was a larger than life figure of historical significance, for instance, Orson Welles.
If you are asked about Top Gun, who comes to mind? Tom Cruise.

If you are asked about the Matrix, who comes to your mind? Neo- Keanu Reeves

If you are asked about Avatar, who comes to mind? James Cameron

An actor can be remembered over the director and vice versa- the deciding factor depends on the popularity of the actor.

Can you tell me the director of Logan? No, but you will always remember Hugh Jackman as wolverine.

Everything you said is true, but you forgot something; legacy. An actor without an elite crowning achievement has no legacy.

Even though Cuba Gooding sucks right now, his name is in the history books. Hundred year from now, people are gonna talk about him, whilst Tom Cruise will be a very vague memory.
False. Tom Cruise will last longer than Cuba Gooding.

Even without awards, Tom Cruise has more culturally relevant movies than Cuba Gooding. Top Gun alone can never be washed away from history
Christianity EtcRe: Atheist Challenge- 30 Days, 30 Arguments Against God by MacCantStopMe(op): 10:48pm On Apr 17, 2020
ARGUMENT 1 (DAY-1 17/APRIL/20)
THE LACK OF EVIDENCE FOR GOD

This is the quintessential argument of the atheists. There exists no evidence for God.

We human beings are physical beings. We use our 5 senses to tell us what is real and what is not. It is a presupposition that our senses are trustworthy.

How can we vouch for a God that we cannot see, smell, touch, hear or taste? We can't use science to observe this god. How are we certain of his (or her) existence? No one knows what he looks like and no 2 people can give an accurate description for God

Furthermore, no one has been able to prove god. If anyone can prove god, the person will win a Nobel prize. But it is still yet to happen.

Also, what is now the difference between god and an imaginary character? Lets say a flying horse in space or a mythological god like Thor. What is the difference between god and these imaginary characters? Both have no evidence for them and they only live in the minds of their fans or followers.

If somebody is suffering, the best thing to do is-

1. to console them; tell them that you empathise with the hardship they are going through

2. to ask if there is anything you can do to help. Even just making tea for the person can bring a smile
Christianity EtcWhat Do You Know About Secular Humanism? by MacCantStopMe(op): 10:19pm On Apr 17, 2020
Secular Humanism is gaining grounds in developed country but what do we know about it?

Here is a definition of secular humanism-

Secular humanism is a philosophy or life stance that embraces human reason, secular ethics, and philosophical naturalism while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, and superstition as the basis of morality and decision making. Secular humanism posits that human beings are capable of being ethical and moral without religion or belief in a deity.

In short, secular humanist believe that governments should be secular and laws should be based on reason and rationality.

Christianity Etc5 Reasons Why Atheism Is On The Rise Today by MacCantStopMe(op): 10:09pm On Apr 17, 2020
I see a lot of christians complaining about the growing atheism in our society and on Nairaland. No one should be surprised or shocked by this as there are many reasons why such happens-

1. Greed, materialism and corruption in churches
A lot of church members, especially youth, have been turned away from christianity because of the greed eschewed by pastors and church leaders. The churches seem to only care about collecting tithes and showing off cars or private jets. Even during Coronavirus, churches were still trying to collect tithe from members who havent even been paid salaries. Why does a pastor need a 70 million naira Rolls Royce or 2 private jets? This modern day prosperity gospel is turning people away from God and religion.

2. Growth of science, internet and international connectivity
A lot of people are now focusing on science for foundational truths about the universe. Many developed countries pour money in science courses and research. The problem is that religion is usually anti-science, and many people who are scientifically inclined see this as backwards. That is, it is backwards to be anti-science.

3. Killings and inhumane treatment of humans, especially unbelievers
A very good example how religion kills and treats humans like animals is terrorism. Unfortunately, the Boko Haram terrorists are associated with islam and due to the massacres that the Boko boys commit, a lot of people see religion in a bad light. Then, we have christians who beat children in the name of fighting witchcraft. These are examples of how religious people can go extreme in treating others badly. A lot of people get turned off from the inhumane treatment of unbelievers by religious people.

4. Government corruption
The government is made up of people. Now, in Nigeria, our leaders have always been christians and muslims. So, how is it that we are still corrupt? The conclusion here is that religion is useless against corruption. Furthermore, a lot of religious leaders are cowards when it comes to speaking up against government corruption. Martin Luther King Jnr was an inspiration in this case. He fought for the common black man against the government. Nowadays, instead of fighting for the people, religious leaders prefer to collect donations from thieving politicians.

5. General hypocrisy
The same religious preachers preaching honesty get caught lying.
The same religious preachers preaching about marriage end up divorced or accused of extramarital affairs
The same religious preachers preaching chastity get caught raping young boys and girls
The same religious leaders preaching humility drive the latest multi-million Naira cars
The same religious leaders preaching wisdom go against science by having services during a pandemic
Why would someone not leave these religious leaders and their god?

If you are not practising social distancing from common sense, you will have also noticed that I only put ratings score on movies which haven't been previously rated by anybody else on this thread.

Example Bird Box, Edge of Tomorrow, Warlord and the likes.
That is foolishness. Come on. Don't fall my hand with such nonsense.

When we both know that you aren't a cinema person and you tend to watch films later than most people here. This means that you will hardly ever have a chance to review movies since you are usually one of the last people to watch it.

Take Edge of Tomorrow for instance, did you watch it in the cinema?

Nigga, I've watched other science fictions from the 80s that aged well. The one didn't.
Even "Back to the future" made a lot of mistakes about the future- it assumed that we would still be using fax.

The bolded shows you haven't even watched the very film you're defending, because you'd know the film's timeline was 2017.

My criticism of the primitive tech lies in the fact that the tech didn't look futuristic.
I watched that film when I was a teenager. I will watch it again to give you a more robust reply. I cant remember everything but the film is not as bad as you put it. Expect my retort this evening.

Late comer, Lol,

Apparently you missed the part I intimated that it's "a rewatch" in the last paragraph.

It's nostalgia that drew me to the film. I wanted to see how well it aged, as opposed to the last time I watched it as a kid.

I reiterate, it didn't age well.
It is normal for 80s science fiction movies not to age well 3 DECADES LATER, especially futuristic ones.

What did you expect? For them to accurately predict the future? modern day CGI? lol

When a film critic reviews an ancient movie, the critic keeps in mind that he is reviewing it from a different era.

The Running Man (1987)

This classic action/Sci-fi didn't age well. I have much to criticise, I don't even know where to begin.

Lemme start with the SFX; the sound effect is terrible. from the machine-guns to the sound of someone hitting something (or someone) with an open hand (or with something), it's reminiscent of classic Nollywood SFX.

It gets worse. The so-called futuristic technology didn't come close to looking like something from the late 90s, talk more of a tech from 2017.

And the worst part of it all, Schwarzenegger himself. Shiiit, his accent was baaad, like speech impediment bad. I don't know why the filmmakers gave a heavily accented Austrian actor a lot of lines, thereby making him a proper chatty Cathy. In Terminator films, he was smartly semi-muted, in that he didn't talk much, but here, he couldn't stop talking! Someone with a down syndrome is more coherent than this guy, ah swear.

All in all, it was a very cheap looking late 90s action/sci-fi that would easily be mistaken for a parody film. The only positives I drew from rewatching this movie are, the music and the scantily clad hotties.
Dont you just love it when late comers give anachronistic movie reviews? Using 2020 mind to review a 1987 movie lol.

How do you think the movie was reviewed in the 80s and early 90s?

The film is a late 80s film and not 90s.

Please, I know reviews are opinions but garnish them with facts and proper context
