the government really needs to find a way to mitigate the effects of these acts. we simply cant allow prostitution erode away our morals and the very bedrock of our society.

the govt should establish rehabilitation centers to administer treatment to these people.

GEJ needs to coax him to do so, so he could bring back soludo and have effcc under sanusi monitor both the cbn and their regular duty.

Nigerian Internet users may again begin to experience disruption from this week as the Nigerian Telecommunications PLC, NITEL, at the weekend, indicated a fault in the SAT-3 cable.

According to NITEL, the fault was caused by a ship that maliciously anchored on the non-anchor zone of the high sea which caused a cut in the SAT3 submarine cable.

Nitel however noted that the effective use of its world class Automatic Identification System (AIS) , helped it and its SAT-3 Network Administrator in South Africa to detect the ship on the non-anchor zone.

NITEL’s AIS system is deployed at the NECOM house Lagos. It is a satellite based monitoring system that monitors the movement of ships and vessels around the SAT-3 cable line on the Atlantic Ocean.

Management of Nitel however said that after discovering the ship and possible damage it may do to the submarine cable, it immediately notified the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to redirect the ship from the non-anchor zone, but that NPA did not respond adequately and the cable eventually had a cut which resulted in a sudden service disruption since 2.am on Friday.

NITEL however said that it has been able to localize the fault at about 12KM from the SAT-3 Cable station inside the high sea and has . . .

Anambra begins dredging of flood channels in Onitsha

AWKA—Residents of  Onitsha went into jubilation, Wednesday, following the commencement of the dredging of the Sacomori flood channel which was responsible for the flooding of many areas of the town. The project to be financed by the Federal Government is estimated to cost about N1.3 billion.

The flood channel meant to flow through the Nwangene river and empty into the River Niger, had been blocked over the years resulting in massive floods in the town.

When Governor Peter Obi visited the site yesterday, many residents expressed joy at the development and commended government for embarking on the project.

Some of them said although they have lived in Onitsha for many years, they never knew that the several kilometers of the channel measuring over 20 meters deep existed in the area as the entire stretch was completely blocked with debris.

Mrs. Chika Ofoma who resides in a three storey -building which already had its ground floor flooded said they always dreaded rainy season every year and commended government for coming to their rescue.

Mr. Sunday Mbagwu, who hailed from Imo State and has been residing in the area since 1970, noted that if government was able to dredge the channel, Onitsha would not be the same again as flooding would greatly reduce.

Governor Obi, who spoke at the site said the dredging of the Sacamori-Nwangene drain would provide a permanent solution to the challenge of flood in Onitsha and environs, adding that President Goodluck Jonathan decided to intervene on the project because of sustained and consistent efforts and commitment of the state government on the project, as well as repeated appeals to the Federal Government to come to the aide of the residents of the area.

In the meantime, Anambra State government has commenced work on some gully erosion sites in the state. The affected areas are the Ideani erosion site along Nkpor-Nnobi road, Omagba phase one and kilometer one on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, both in Onitsha.

Obi said government was taking short term measures to ensure that the affected roads were not severed by erosion and to save buildings that were threatened.

PoliticsAs The Red Sea Divided So Is Enugu Dividing From Onitsha (pictures) by macjive01(op): 8:11pm On Nov 23, 2011
NOTHING has been done to fix or prevent further destruction of properties by dreadful erosion that cut across Enugu-Onitsha Federal Government (FG) road, which occurred at Omaba Phase 2, Onitsha, Anambra State, three months ago.
The erosion site, which claimed the dedicated lane for the vehicles returning from Enugu to Onitsha, has become site attraction for passersby. It draws scores of people, who seek to know what has happened, especially the students.
This has also threatened the lives of over 10 individual families living in the threatened three storey building sighted at the erosion site. The building is at the brink of utter destruction in absence of government intervention.

https://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s320x320/381378_272521292789527_100000949747247_764591_146601958_n.jpg

The Guardian gathered that the erosion, which occurred in August, 2011, had long developed, even while Senator Chris Ngige was the Governor of the State. It was learnt also that he visited the site but did nothing. Today, this neglect of this ‘minor’ problem has formed the major public commentary.

The underground water tunnel as well as other public facilities, such as the water pipelines, Nitel and MTN cables amongst other telecom providers’ facilities were unearthed, hanging at the site.

No one knows when work would commence on the site. The whole vehicles coming from Enugu to Onitsha have to divert to the other rocky lane full of mud and potholes. Further heavy down pour would render the only surviving lane not passable.
According to one of the occupants of the building found at the site, Edward Ubah, the FG has not visited the site in any form, not even any of its ministries. “I want to say that there no FG presence in Anambra State. The roads are bad and the construction company that was brought by FG doesn’t help matters.”

“There are a number of erosion sites in the State, which has not been attended to. Since past three years that FG awarded FG roads to Consolidated Construction Company (CCC), ourlives have been in constant agony. The CCC has succeeded in scrapping all the roads and never fixed any, not even one.”

It was gathered that the State government, which made stone bricks at the foundation of the threatened building, ordered the residents to vacate the building for safety but at the time of The Guardian visit, a number of die hard were found, still living and working there.

The public quit notice posted at the door of the first stall reads: “The government has given order for everybody to vacate immediately for the safety of lives and properties.” But this never amount to anything serious to occupants of the building, who defied the notice to live on.

In a bid to know why some residents are hesitant to leave, even as few business centres were under lock and key, a young lady in her early 20s, Precious Okolie said there was nothing to be afraid of since government has made stone bricks to protect the house, adding that the rain has reduced.

“The erosion has not and will not affect the building. We were told to remove the pavement that was made by the side of the building so that further earth movement will not tumble the building, and that we did. So, for now, we are secured. Though it was terrible when it happened. We watched it collapse during that heavy rain and flooding,” she said.

But another young man in his mid 40s, Monday Ugwu differed in his view. “This is a serious problem we have found ourselves into. Most people wish to move but there is no money to do so. Erosion has become a regular occurrence in Anambra State and the government has not done anything. Today, there are over six unattended erosion sites in the State – Agulu, Onitsha, Nkisi and the newest Omaba.”

He continued: “I heard a clue that the World Bank has indicated interest to assist the State reclaim these sites. But FG has to swing into action to arrest the menace of erosion in the State that has cut across the federal highways at Omaba and Upper Iweka in Onitsha.”

However, it was alleged that the CCC, which had been on the road for the past three years said it would not touch the portion of the road affected by erosion, as the site wasn’t in their scope of contract, except the government releases money on that regard.

It was a Sunday evening, a supposedly holy day for Christians. Traditionally, the major markets are closed in Onitsha, the commercial capital of Anambra State in South East Nigeria, and it is either a visiting day for the city dwellers or time to attend town union meetings. It is also a day to unwind at the various drinking joints.

Time was 6:45pm and this reporter was at the Lagos Park bypass near the Chisco Park to investigate an already conceived script from enquiries about some areas of the city, inhabited by women of easy virtue.
Dusk was gradually kissing the day goodbye and the area was bustling with a flurry of activities. Commercial cyclists (Okada) and motorists honked their horns while music blasted from the loud speakers of a nearby record store. Everyone seemed in a hurry either to get home or to complete other tasks before nightfall.

Travellers were boarding the night buses to Lagos even as motor park touts scouted for more passengers. This reporter sat on a plastic chair at Mama Nkechi’s kiosk where the middle-aged woman sold all kinds of spirits, local concoctions, kola and gin after getting her permission under the pretence that I was waiting for a brother traveling to Lagos that night.

While fiddling with my phone, the reporter’s “third” eye was also fixed on an unfolding scene nearby. Two young ladies clutching leather handbags and another black polythene bag popularly known as ‘walkie-talkie’ suddenly appeared from the opposite direction, near the Chisco Park toilet. They briefly exchanged pleasantries, scanned the environment and walked towards a lock-up stall painted in a popular noodles wrapper’s colour and began fiddling with their phones. Soon after, other ladies joined them.

One of them approached the Chisco Park gate and pretended to hang around when a man, probably in his late 50s, emerged from inside and handed her a big sack tied with a rope. She took the bag to the lock-up stall and in a jiffy, the other ladies helped her untie it and they used it to create an emergency room in front of the stall. Within seconds, two young men appeared carrying double wooden benches, which the ladies collected and placed inside the make-shift tent. By this time, their number had increased.

Another woman in wrapper and blouse with dark glasses covering her eyes, who sat beside this reporter at the ogogoro kiosk, rose from her seat, crossed to the other side of the road and also joined them. All the ladies, now over 20, pulled out the content of their ‘walkie-talkie’ polythene bags and began to UnCloth. Like a relay race where the athletes wait for the referee to shout on-your-marks, they all pulled off the semi-decent clothes they wore and changed into something wacky, provocative and all-revealing. In just two minutes, the jeans trousers, skirts and tops suddenly disappeared and.  .   .  .   .

MATTERS ARISING

Not long ago the deputy senate president of the federation advocated, some might say subtly, for the legalization of P.rostitution.
he got attacked form every corner with rathers to this proposal, but the truth is that the nation Nigeria with her poverty level and social economic index at an all time low, high level of awareness- open-eye, internet ages and the very grith of the African , black man- our intimate prowess. mix all those together and what do you get ? AN EXPLOSION OF RAUNCHY AND DEBAUCHERY

IF THE TRUTH MUST be told our society tolerates it, secretly relies it and more or less accepts it.
that is evident in the increasing marriage among these love peddlers.

most nigerian men dont want a professor that can't shake body.

who wants a professor wey no know wetin dey ?

the question i have for you people is do we as a nation embrace that call from our respected deputy senator and do away with the stigma of love peddling ?

if we abolish or criminalize this trade, profession , how would bachelors and widower- esp those not in the best of physical and financial fitness, hold body when the Harmattan session come calling?

the raining session ?

Imo State is set to make history next year by becoming the first state, nay first in Africa, to host the University and College of Football (UCFB).

The UCFB, which is a degree awarding university, is based in Burnley, UK, and in addition also provides courses in business and management.

An agreement to make the Imo State capital, the first city to host the university outside the United Kingdom was reached last Friday at a meeting held by the governor of the state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and UCFB officials, led by its Provost and Chief Executive, Philip Wilson.

A very delighted governor, who said he was determined to bring the glory days back to the state, said he would be donating a piece of land for the venture, which was made possible by his Senior Special Assistant on Sports and former Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo Kanu.

In addition to the proposed university, Imo State will also be housing a football academy courtesy of Bolton Football Club, whose officials were also at the meeting held at the Government House, Owerri.

The UCFB Provost explained that while the university is only a few months old, discussions had been going on between them and Kanu for over eight months.

"We were introduced by Premier League Chairman, Sir Dave Richards and after holding preliminary discussions with Kanu where he explained his governor's desire to develop youth football in the state we decided to give it a go and I must say we're impressed with our discussions in person with His Excellency," said Wilson.

It was learnt that while the university would be taking off in Owerri next year, UCFB has already agreed to start the partnership by accepting at least 10 students selected by the Imo State government to take part in the university's 10-week Executive Diploma course in Football Business Management.

The Provost explained that their goal was to make the participants better managers of the whole facet of the 'beautiful game' as it relates to the off the field activities.

Wilson was accompanied on his trip by a former Manchester United youth team star, Richard Flash, who is now a Lecturer in Football Business & Marketing at the university.

As part of the efforts of the state to groom the next 'Jay Jay Okochas' and 'Kanu', the state also used the occasion of the visit of the Bolton and UCFB officials to launch and kick off the Imo League.

The event, which took place at the Dan Anyiam Stadium and drew the governor and his deputy, Sir Jude Agbaso, saw participants from all the 27 local governments taking part in a march past.

It is hoped that at least one top player would emerge from each of the local governments, who could then be sent abroad for trials ultimately with the possibility of getting a club in Europe.

Part of the proceeds from such a transfer would be given to the local government to help them sustain the programme.

In the opening match of the Imo League, Owerri Municipality beat their Isu counterparts 2-1.

i dont want to sound tribal , but many people are of the opinion that the persistent bad road in the south-east has a direct correlation with the linage of almost exclusive yoruba minister of works.

the question is: are yoruba's inherently corrupt ?

should the present crop of yorubas be totally banned and abolished from anywhere near the Ministry of works?

does tinibu have a hand in the this persistent suffer inflicted on the easterners ?

the money for the first nation airline, cud it be money allocated for building southeastern roads? if so then the Igbos cud make a legitimate claim of the airline, right?
