The Igbos are gearing up for a shot at the presidency in 2015, they believe they are legitimate partners in the Nigeria Project and deserve as a matter of right to aspire to call the shots. DAVID-CHYDDY ELEKE in this report, looks at where their arguments are hinged, and the possibility that their aspiration may work. https://www.alexekwueme.org/wp-content/gallery/cache/9__450x_alexekwueme12.jpg Since 1998 when it became clear that Nigeria was about to transit from military dictatorship to democratic civilian rule, the issue of Igbo presidency has been on. The South East zone lost out in 1999 when it became evident that there was need to favour the South West with the presidency as a compensation for the loss of Chief MKO Abiola in the June 12, 1993 presidential election that was annulled by the General Babangida regime. Less than one year in office, and with three and half years still remaining for the present government of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to wind up, there is a renewed agitation by the people of the South East zone to take a shot at the presidency in 2015. The call was first made by some group of Igbo red cap chiefs in Lagos, immediately after the swearing-in of President Jonathan in May, where they stated that Jonathan's success was influenced by the Igbos, so that it will be the turn of the zone after his tenure. Most respondents believed the call was premature either because the country was just out of an election or because a southerner had just been sworn in as president, as the northerner strongly believe that the rotational presidency in the country is between the North and the South divide, and not between the six geo-political zones of the country as propagated by the southerners. The recent body language of the Vice President, Arch Namadi Sambo, with youths doning his vest at events, which clearly presents him as seeking to replace his boss in 2015 has also shown the Igbos that their agitation for a shot at the position has not gone down well with the North as they habour the intention to present candidates for the 2015 presidential election. All these have prompted most onlookers especially from the South East Zone to consider if their taking a shot at the highest office of the land is really their right, considering that no Southerner of Igbo extraction has done so since Nigeria's independence in 1960, or probably it is a favour which puts them at the mercy of other zones. On October 15, 2010, while the issue of who ascends to the position of the president in the 2011 election was discussed, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organisation of the Igbos rose in Enugu to present a position saying" . . . . A bit of nation building took place at Pyakasa, a suburb of Abuja, two weekends ago. It was the annual New Yam Festival organized by the Igbo community there. This was the 7th in the series of such festivals. It was also a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of Igbo presence and peaceful coexistence in the community. The first Igbo man arrived Pyakasa in 1971. He is still alive in the FCT, married to a Gbagyi Lady. Thus Yam, in a manner of speaking, or eating, became a unifier of sorts. Yam, though a crop, which nevertheless has life, can unify. Kolanuts were also given out by the Eze during the festival. When summoned, various titled men stepped forward to collect and eat of the nut. Titles were given by the Eze, the King of the Igbo community, to people drawn from other parts of Nigeria, during the festival. The Igbo's have always lived in harmony with their Hausa, Ebira, Gbagyi, Igala and Tiv neighbours in the area. There was a strong sense of brotherhood in the air while the Festival lasted .A few hunters released a few shots into the air, which helped to put the audience in the right mood. After all they were before Chief J.B.C. Udemba, Eze Ndigbo Pyakasa, who was present with Princess Nkasi Udemba, his daughter. An Ebira masquerade began to prance about from time to time, and the Ebira were present in large numbers. The Eze sat in colourful attire upon a seat. His titled men were present. Most of the men wore red caps, while the women wore bright attires. Soon a procession drew nearer. Some of the sweetest Igbo music ever heard by this reporter began to echo. The members of the procession, both men and women, danced gently from side to side in lovely festive dress. It was like a rainbow of sorts, but emerging from humans, rather than the sky. This too was another unforgettable sight. Dr Batos Chikezie comments on the Ahiajoku Festival in the paper he presented at the occasion. His words 'The new Yam festival. The biggest and most important singular event with enough clout to make every Igbo indigene come running home from wherever he or she resides. It was an occasion for honouring Ahiajoku or Ifejoku (as the Igbo Deity of harvest is known in Imo and Anambra states respectively) for a rich and abundant harvest. The town's Chief Priest had the responsibility of leading the people in this sacred ritual to the shrine of Ahiajoku, and offering the biggest of the yam in appreciation, while praying for a better harvest in the years ahead. . . . . IFEATU (not real name), 16, and in senior secondary school 2, suddenly discovered that she was pregnant for her trader boyfriend, Obinna. When she informed Obinna of the development, he warned her not to associate him with such a thing because he had just been released by his master after six of years apprenticeship and was just settling down to nurture his own business and therefore did not want any distraction. Afraid of telling her parents of her predicament, Ifeatu confided in her school mate who agreed to take her somewhere her problem could be solved. That was how Ifeatu went back home, packed her things and moved into the orphanage without informing her parents. It was the owner of the home that later informed the parents of Ifeatu where their daughter was and why she ran away from home. The experience of Ifeatu is becoming a common phenomenon in many cities like Onitsha, Aba , Owerri . . . . READ THE REST HERE http://www.igbolandforum.com/index.php?topic=657.0 |
From Maiduguri to Lagos, Port-Harcourt to Zamfara, the high cost of ram is turning people away from buying the first out of the six eligible animals for a rewarding sacrifice. Every year, hundreds of millions of Muslims across the globe buy, slaughter and share rams, sheep, 'he', goats 'she' goats, camels or cows among their families, relations, neighbours, the poor and needy to celebrate the sincere intention of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael in line with Allah's injunction. Sadly, for security reasons, economic hardship and high cost of transportation, the sacrificial lambs are everywhere but in most states, not affordable. So, it was not altogether surprising when days before the feast, it has emerged that only few people can afford a sacrificial lamb. One of the two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide, Eid-el-Kabir also referred to as Festival of Sacrifice, Greater Eid or Feast of Sacrifice, is an important religious holy day in Nigeria. The feast falls on the tenth day of the twelfth and last month of the calendar. That is approximately seventy days after the end of the month of Ramadan. Reports from investigations carried out by LEADERSHIP in some states of the federation reveal that prices of rams vary but both sellers and buyers agree on one thing: the bigger the animal, the higher the price. Though not measured by the size of the animal, Ustaz Aminu, a Muslim Cleric in Abuja says any animal eligible for sacrifice must be healthy. "This is a fundamental factor. But it is unfortunate that people now go for the most expensive ram as if that is what Allah requires. Allah does not look at the size of the animal offered for sacrifice, He looks at the spirit behind the act. " LEADERSHIP checks in the South-South states of Edo, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa show a drastic rise in the prices of rams. At Aduwawa Livestock Market, Benin City, Edo State, the price of rams ranges between N60, 000 and N80, 000 as against N35,000 and N50,000 last year. Aliko Haruna, a ram dealer in the market blames the rise in price to the harsh economic situation and increase in the transportation of the animals from the Northern part of the country. Haruna said sales have been on the low in spite of the Great Eid. According to Abubakar Jibe, a popular ram trader in Zango Market of Warri, Delta State, the price of ram ranges between N35, 000 and N45, 000. The story is not different in Slaughter Market (Air Force Junction), Mile 3 and Slaughter House (Rumuokoro), all in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. A ram dealer in Rumuokoro who gave his name as Adamu revealed that average price of ram ranges between N45,000 and N120,000, as against N30,000 and N90,000 last year during the Feast of Sacrifice. A visit to Swali and Tombia markets of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 showed that the price of ram was between N20, 000 and N40, 000. Speaking to LEADERSHIP in the state capital, Mr. Ayas one of the customers said the price was too high. "I came to buy three rams but as it is now, I can only buy two." Reports in the North East states of Borno, Adamawa and Bauchi also reveal a rise in ram price. In Gamboru Kasuwa Shanu, Maiduguri, Borno State, the price of ram is between N25, 000 and N100,000 against N15, 000 t0 N80, 000 last year. LEADERSHIP findings show that the Boko Haram activities are the major reason for the price rise. Kassim, a dealer of rams in Maiduguri said most of the people from whom he buys rams in the village no longer supply the animals because of insecurity. "They no longer rear the animals so we go very far to buy and it is ideal that we make a little profit." At Jimeta Cattle Market, Yola, Adamawa State, the price of ram is between N15, 000 and N50, 000 depending on the size. Speaking to LEADERSHIP, Mallam Yakubu, a ram seller in the market said though the price is low, people cannot buy because of lack of money. However, in Tike Azare, Bauchi State, Mallam Abdulsalam, a lecturer in the College of Education, Azare revealed to LEADERSHIP that the price of ram ranges between N15, 000 and N60, 000 as against N10, 000 t0 N45, 000 last year. Market survey conducted by LEADERSHIP in the North Central states of Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau show a sharp variation in prices. At Asakeyo and Shange markets of Lafiya, the Nasarawa State capital, rams sell for between N15, 000 and N93, 000. Umar Isa, a ram seller in Asakeyo Market reveals that Igbo's economic power , . . . . crime wave sweeps through Britain Jason Bennetto The intelligence agencies MI6 and MI5 are being used to clamp down on fraud and drug-dealing by West African gangs. Jason Bennetto, Crime Correspondent, investigates a trend costing Britain billions of pounds a year. The criminals, mainly Nigerians, have been discovered working inside government departments, the police and tax offices. The level of crime is so serious that the National Criminal Intelligence Service will tomorrow announce an expansion of its work against the gangs. Agents and eavesdropping equipment from MI5, MI6 and the listening base at the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham are being used to investigate Nigerian crime. The cost of the fraud alone is pounds 3.5bn a year, says the NCIS. The fraudsters concentrate on con-tricks and benefit fraud, drug-trafficking, mainly cocaine, and illegal immigration. The intelligence agencies are assisting NCIS and British forces in some of the most serious cases. The secret services can provide expertise in infiltrating the gangs, bugging, covert surveillance and identifying targets. The gangs, which have strongholds in the US and most European countries, form networks to siphon money and have proved difficult to break into. Activities by West African criminals that have been detected include: At the Treasury Solicitor's office, the Government's lawyers, a worker was using the fax to work a scam involving advance fees. She was admonished and sacked. An employee at the Department of Social Security was creating false National Insurance numbers and identifications which were being used to claim benefits such as education grants and child allowance. One individual was found with 100 separate identities. A worker at one of the Inland Revenue's accounts offices was caught photocopying incoming company tax returns, cheques, and headed notepaper. These were sold to a contact who wrote to the banks and set up standing orders for small amounts to be paid into their accounts every month. The Metropolitan Police had a problem with cleaners found looking for data and addresses in a West End police station. An estimated 500,000 "advance-fee fraud" or "419" letters attempting to con people by promising risk-free cash are sent by West Africans, mainly from Lagos, around the world every year. The "419" scam is named after the section of the Nigerian penal code dealing with fraud. Thousands of individuals and companies in Britain are randomly written to and asked if they will help transfer millions of pounds of government money out of Nigeria in return for a cut of the cash. All they supposedly have to do is provide bank details. But once hooked they are asked for an "advance" or have money removed from their accounts. Millions are stolen this. . . . States can't grow with paying 80% 90% of their revenue on salaries alone. |
Hahahaha . . . This girl get mouth die. |
States in Nigeria will never to solvent enough to embark on any meaningful development till they lays off the massive civil servant in their states, imagine Kano state spending 127% of revenue on salary alone, if true that model is simply not sustainable. Another option is to increase cost of services in their state. Cost of swearing for an affidavit in IMO state is still officially 78 kobo though the magistrates office wud charge u 800 naira that's 799.22 naira into the magistrates pocket. Kobo, I don't agree with ur point of not embarking on big projects, tinapa failed becos of market principle; calabar seaport isn't functional, their local market isn't big enough to utilise the coliseum, imagine the project was in Onitshaor Aba ? Good God that project will pay ursef in 2 minutes. Nnewi lost out to Lagos in motor parts business simply becos nnewi didn't invest in its infrastructure, even upto the market generating revenue, business got bigger, marketer go more frustrated, and what next? They left en mass. Nnewi lost out. |
