vegafbs: https://nextedition.com.ng/2019/07/03/ortom-counters-presidency-offers-evidence-benue-included-in-ruga-settlement/
The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has said the Presidency lied in its claim that the state is not included in the controversial Ruga settlements plan of the federal government.
Mr. Ortom said the statement by Presidential Spokesperson, Garba Shehu on Channels TV on Tuesday was not only contradictory but also false, misleading and lacking in honour.
Mr. Shehu, who was a guest during a breakfast show on the independent television channel had criticised Mr. Ortom for rejecting the Ruga settlement plan, adding that Benue State was not included in the programme.
But responding to the presidential aide, Mr. Ortom, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, said there is ample evidence to show the Presidency is lying.
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture had written to the Benue State Government informing it of the decision to establish Ruga Settlements in the three senatorial zones of the state.
“Our Ministry of Agriculture which received the correspondence responded that Benue has no land for the Ruga Settlements,” the governor said.
“It added that the state only has land for ranches as stipulated by the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, 2017.
“The Benue State Government subsequently made public its rejection of the Ruga model of animal husbandry and reminded those pushing for the illegal settlement patterns about the provisions of the country’s Constitution and the Land Use Act.”
The governor said he was shocked to hear Mallam Shehu’s claim that the state was not included in the Ruga project and, therefore, had no right to speak about it.

Continuing, he argued, “If Benue was not included in the Ruga settlements, why did the Federal Government say it has gazetted lands in the 36 states for the project? other countries are moving forward Nigerian backward. Politics › Re: I Require Formidable Team To Deliver — Buhari by madmohamed(m): 7:17am On Jul 03, 2019 |
JosEast: President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said that a formidable team is required for him to deliver his campaign pledges to Nigerians. Speaking when he hosted members of the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) at the State House, Abuja, he said he would work hard to leave the country better than he met it.
Buhari also assured Nigerians that a firm foundation for future generations is being laid. “While there will be those who are determined to drag us back to the bad old days, your visit is timely. It is a exactly a month ago that I was sworn in for a second term in office and the task ahead for the next four years will require a formidable team,” he said.
Describing the BMO as a key communication in the information management asset to his administration, Buhari said their efforts are commendable. “We have just come off a rigorous electioneering campaigns during which I visited all the 36 states of the federation campaigning, seeking the votes of Nigerians and telling them what we have done in the last four years. “I campaign on three simple premises not different from those of 2015; to tackle insecurity, to promote economic diversification and to fight corruption.
Fulfilling these three promises are fundamental to taking Nigeria to the next level. “I assure you that I am resolute on fulfilling these promises and will leave Nigeria will be a far better place than when we came. “It is not an easy job to sell the administration’s successes, we are doing unpopular things and facing powerful individuals and taking on vested interest who are accustomed to the corrupt era. But we must do things the right way, if we promised change, then we must deliver it. This is regardless of whose interest is touched. There must be a manifest departure from the old order. “We are making significant progress and these are evident for all to see.
Despite attempts by enemies to twist and bend facts, most Nigerians know the truth. “I acknowledged your steadfastness in telling the story of this administration’s successes. We will continue to intensify our efforts and ensure that our promises to Nigerians are kept and fulfilled,” he said. Reiterating his determination to end security challenges, Buhari said his efforts are to make Nigeria a peaceful and a prosperous country.
Earlier the chairman of the BMO, Omoniyi Akinsiju, said the Buhari administration has performed more than his predecessors. “Despite twisted narrative about clashes between farmers and pastoralists, your administration has shown the most commitment towards ending these decades-long conflicts; it has produced several strategies and plans aimed at providing a sustainable resolution.
“We are conscious of the need to push your achievements beyond elitists boundary to the millions of silent and media underserved Nigerians at the base of the pyramid. We are resolute that this must be done. We, therefore, respectfully, seek the strengthening of our organization, by a strategic reinforcement of our capacity – through the leadership of Messrs Femi Adesina, Garba Shehu and Laolu Akande,” he said.
Daily Trust reports that Tunde Thompson, a journalist who was imprisoned during the military era of Buhari, under the decree 4 was among the BMO members.

References: The paramount ruler and people of Akpa/Otobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area, LGA, one of the areas designated by the Federal Government to host the proposed (Ruga) settlements for herdsmen in Benue State yesterday led his subjects in a peaceful protest in Otukpo town rejecting the proposal.
The people who came out in their numbers bearing placards with various inscriptions like ‘we do not have land for Ruga’, ‘open grazing is not allowed in Benue’ and ‘we will resist Ruga’ chanted war songs as they marched through major streets in the area.
One of the leaders of the protesters, Steve Ocheme said they embarked on the march to impress on the Federal Government the need to cancel, in the interest of peace, the decision to give their land to herdsmen.
"We are peasant farmers and we can’t grow our crops with cattle. We are calling on Federal Government to reconsider this plan in order not to throw our communities into crisis,” he said. On his part, the Acting District Head, Akpa Otobi community, Chief Ochinya Ofeka said, “we gave lands to Federal Government for dam, Research Center and for the School of Health Sciences but we don’t have for open grazing in whatever name or form."
Receiving the protesters who also handed him a protest letter, Caretaker Chairman of Otukpo LGA, Mr. George Alli appealed for calm adding, “Nigeria’s Constitution is very clear on the issue of land administration as provided for by the Land Use Act.
"And like Governor Samuel Ortom has always said, we are in full support of ranching, but we are against open grazing under any nomenclature, whether cattle colony or RUGA settlement,” Alli added.

NgeneUkwenu: Sit-at-home order: Enugu residents ignore IPOB Published
Residents of Enugu State on Thursday went about their normal activities and disregarded the sit-at-home order given by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.
The outlawed group had on May 28 in a statement directed the residents to observe a sit-at-home order in memory of those who lost their lives in the Nigeria-Biafra war from 1967 to 1970.
A News Agency of Nigeria correspondent, who monitored the situation in Enugu metropolis, observed that there was no sign of compliance as the roads were busy with vehicular traffic and many people were going about their activities.
At Agbani Road axis, there was heavy traffic as many people including school children and workers were boarding commercial buses to their different destinations.
Public and private schools in the metropolis were opened for normal academic activities for the day.
Kenyatta, Garki and Akwata markets in the metropolis, as well as banks, were opened for business, while traders were busy displaying their goods as usual.
A businessman, Mr Francis Ugochukwu, said that everyone had to struggle on a daily basis for his or her livelihood, saying that IPOB would not provide food for anyone.
“It is high time we all learnt our lesson. IPOB had deceived us a lot with its seat-at-home order and at the end of the whole thing, nothing happens, enough is enough,” Ugochukwu said.
He said that previous sit-at-home orders by IPOB had never favoured anyone; rather people counted losses in their businesses for staying at home.
He noted that he would be the last person to observe such an order again, describing the IPOB members as jobless people.
Mrs Mary Uzondu, a civil servant, said that IPOB did not employ her and had no right to stop her from going to work.
Uzondu said that there was no sign of the order in her neighborhood as everyone was going about his or her duty.
Miss Ifunanya Chukwu, a student, said she was not ready to obey an illegal order, saying that IPOB could not distort her academic activities for the day.
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Sept. 21, 2017, gave judicial backing to the Executive Order of President Muhammadu Buhari, outlawing the IPOB and declared its activities as acts of terrorism and illegality.

HeWrites: The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday jokingly thanked President Buhari for not converting him to Islam, saying he has been attacked severally for associating with a President who many assumed was planning to Islamize Nigeria, Igbere Tv reports.
Amaechi said this at the valedictory Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House Abuja yesterday Wednesday, May 22nd.
The former Rivers state governor narrated how he was almost chased out of Christ the King Catholic Church in 2014 for supporting the president, who they alleged was trying to Islamise the country,Igbere Tv reports.
“Mr President, let me thank you for not converting me to Islam. I say that specifically because in 2014 when I walked into Christ the King Catholic Church, I was literally chased out of the church as a governor because I was accused of supporting a man whose agenda was to Islamise Nigeria.
And in Rivers state they began to call me `Alhaji Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi’. I thank you because they have dropped the `Alhaji’ and back to Mr Chibuike Amaechi,’’ he said.
Amaechi said some persons initially thought that the president would be an autocratic leader only for him to turn out to be an “extreme democrat’’.
“I was told in the course of the campaign that you were autocratic and therefore you would not be democratic. Most of us are not happy that you have moved from your autocratic nature to an extreme democrat that everything puts to test of the people, to the extent that the people now feel that the only way things can go on in this country is by the rule of law.
“We all know that the rule of law is the beginning and the end of this government. Talking about the financial impunity that we saw before, people were making money without having any productive capacity for that’’ he said
