The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has reacted to the open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo in the letter released by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, had expressed worry over high level of insecurity in the country.

He called on the President to take decisive action to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown crisis.

According to the letter: “I am very much worried and afraid that we are on the precipice and dangerously reaching a tipping point where it may no longer be possible to hold danger at bay.

“Without being immodest, as a Nigerian who still bears the scar of the Nigerian civil war on my body and with a son who bears the scar of fighting Boko Haram on his body, you can understand, I hope, why I am so concerned.”

Reacting, the ACF said it was still studying the letter and will speak on it soon.

“Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) is studying Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and will make it’s position known soon,” the National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, told the Nation newspaper.

He did not give further details.

Former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (retd) has revealed how he and other prominent Nigerians saved Chief Olusegun Obasanjo from impeachment by the National Assembly, during his second term as president.

He identified General Abdulsalami Abubakar and Chief Ernest Sonekan, both of them ex-heads of state, as some of the other eminent Nigerians involved in saving Obasanjo from getting the sack.

Gowon, speaking during a lecture ‘Nation Building or Nation Fragmentation: Reflections on 20 Years of Post-Military Rule in Nigeria’ in Abuja on Saturday, said it took them some efforts to convince the then Senate President, Pius Anyim, and House of Representatives Speaker, Ghali Na’Abba, to drop the impeachment plot in the national interest.

While commenting on Na’Abbah, who was also a guest at the occasion, Gowon said, “I can assure you that we had some very important discussions and I know that we had to appeal to him and the President of the Senate not to impeach Obasanjo and of course, because of the respect they had for us, they listened to us.

“This is because if we had allowed them to impeach the President at that time of our democracy, no President in Nigeria would escape being harassed. So, I thank you very much for listening to us.

“Like me, Late Emmanuel Abisoye chose to join the Nigerian military in preference to other careers which he was eminently qualified. His achievements in the military career showed that he took the right decision to serve his country.

“As young as we were then, our ideals were not self-seeking. Rather, they were focused on the growth and development of a strong, stable, viable and indivisible nation.

“As his Commander-In-Chief during the Nigerian crisis of 1967 to 1970, I found his scorecard commendable; he fought gallantly, courageously.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed security agencies in the country to quickly fish out those who murdered Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Ondo State on Friday.

Mrs Olakunrin was in the state yesterday to see her 94-year old father, but was killed by suspected Fulani herders at Ore, a town in Ondo, on her way to Lagos.

In a statement signed on Saturday by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Buhari commiserated with Mr Fasoranti on the death of his daughter.

According to the President, she was killed by armed robbers going by preliminary report from the police. However, he said those behind the act should be brought to justice in the shortest possible time.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on the death of his daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin.

“The deceased was reportedly shot Friday along the Kajola-Ore road, in Ondo State, by those the police described as armed robbers.

“The President prayed that God will comfort Pa Fasoranti, and give him the fortitude to bear the grievous loss,” Mr Adesina said the statement.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with Afenifere chairman, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, whose daughter, Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, was killed by suspected herdsmen.


On Friday, it was reported that Mrs Funke Olakunrin, a 58-year-old woman heading to Ore Junction from Akure, Ondo State, when she was attacked and shot by the herdsmen.


Femi Joseph, the Ondo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), had earlier confirmed the killing, saying the suspects were herdsmen who also engaged in armed robbery.


He said the herdsmen attacked three vehicles, including a luxurious bus belonging to the Young Shall Grow Motors, adding that the passengers in the luxurious bus were travelling from Imo State to Lagos.


Joseph added that Mrs Olakunrin was the only one killed in the incident.


Olakunrin is the second child of 94-year-old Fasoranti to die. The elder statesman had also lost a daughter, Bunmi, some years ago, Fox Meek reports.


Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, in a message posted on his Twitter page, said President Buhari “prays God to give Pa Fasoranti fortitude to bear the loss.”


He wrote; “President Muhammadu Buhari condoles with Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, whose daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin was killed along Ondo-Ore road by those described as armed robbers by Ondo Police Command. He prays God to give Pa Fasoranti fortitude to bear the loss.”

The Ohanaeze Youth Council worldwide, OYC, on Friday warned herdsmen to stop moving around bushes and farmland across the South East from July 20, 2019.

The youths warned of severe consequences if herdsmen are caught moving around bushes and farmlands with their cattle.




In a statement signed by its President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, OYC called on Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, to educate herdsmen on the new directive.

The youth-group also lauded the South East Governors on their decisive stand on ending the herdsmen, farmers clash by imposing restrictions on the movement of Cattle, “only approved conveyance of cattle by lorry, not on foot, which had abolished the aged long method of cattle movement by foot.”

The Fulani own all the land in Nigeria according to the Chairman of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Alhaji Abdullahi Bodejo, and that those claiming to owe land and would not release it to government for ranching were being selfish and do not want peace in the land.

In an interview granted to journalists, he said that his group was supporting the establishment of ranches 100 per cent, disclosing that, “it is because there are no ranches that some Fulani elements from other states are opposed to anti-grazing law.

“But with the intervention of the Federal Government, Fulani can now confine their grazing activities to a particular area.

“They are raising opposition to it because the President of the federation is a Fulani man. I don’t know the basis of the opposition, but those people who are opposed to it are enemies of the Fulani. They are trying to gang up against the Fulani because of their personal interests.

“Is it not a good idea to also settle the Fulani? This will be a solution to the herders-farmers’ conflicts Insha Allah.

If we close all the cattle markets in this country, the economy will come down. Take the case of Lagos where they slaughter almost 6000 cows per day; go and ask the governor how much revenue they are raking from there. For almost 60 years, Fulani have not gained anything from government.

“Some people are just bent on destroying the Fulani economy.

“As far as I am concerned, they have no reason for opposing creation of ranches. It is just a demonstration of their hatred against the Fulani.

“Everybody has a right to his opinion but the hatred is too much for us. Let us have a rethink and build Nigeria together.”

Speaking on the fact that many states were reluctant to donate land for ranches because they don’t want to regret it in the end, Bodejo declared,

“The day those people were born, were they born with the land? The people who are claiming land are the ones causing crisis in this country. If Fulani have the culture of staying in one place, do you think anybody can claim land more than Fulani?
