, omawunmi has not been so consistent except for the recent performances. its like all she and her peeps are after is the money not how they will do a good job and improve music in naija. ,
Truth be told, i was amazed at the way omawunmi's fans[or peeps] were particular about bringing home the money, only the 2 guys interviewed didn't mention MONEY! I guess for some people its the $10,000 that matters.
Or is it a warri thing!
But my girl can sing and i think she deserves to win.
Another truth; Timi has the most fans on nairaland, You can deduce from the thread. grin

Jordin sparks rendition of "this is my now" was beautiful and a befitting end to the show. Blake's version wasn't special!
Its a pain for me because i was hoping for a change from sweet soulful singers. Only Carrie Underwood is a bit a different from the rest of the idol winners [she does country].
Last year, i wanted Chris Daughtry to win but he got chucked out in the round of 4! But he has since made it big. I wish Blake the same.
Back to our Idols, Omawunmi would do! Timi is great but i have enough of Luther Vandross already.

Agree with u on ENYA, but NAJEE --- no way man, get your facts right --- he's Jazz; instrumentals or not!
I expected reactions such as this, Truth is, RuuDie, you should check your own facts well; while Najee played contemporary jazz in the 70s, he was more successful performing with Instrumentalists like Paul Jackson Jr and Marcus Miller.
He touts as one of the innovators of "urban jazz", but isn't acknowledged as one

@Icon,
I know George Benson is tough to do, but that is no excuse. It is tough only in regards to technique, not in regards to remembering the words and that is where Timi so spectacularly failed, We're all agreed that Timi really is a phenomenal performer, much better than the beat-boxing Blake Lewis who is currently in the finals of American Idol (but who i don't think stands a chance against Jordin Sparks).
I do agree with you about Timi being a phenomenal act, but missing your lines isn't an hallmark of a great singer, It can reflect laziness or inflexibility.
Which is where I think Blake lewis is far different. Beat boxing maybe but highly talented and creative. What he did with the Bon Jovi song "You give love a bad name" was simply out of this world. He has not only incorporated his beat boxing skills with his singing, he is versatile and conveys his style to the audience. Even Simon Cowell acknowledged his ability to take risks and make a song his own is unique in the idols series.
I support our own idols as passionately as i can, but i despise being hyperbolic about their talents. Timi is good but not in the Blake lewis league. AT ALL!!!
On a lighter note; Sanjaya and Jerrilyn were both average talents that made it far in idols competition, the duo would make an interesting research on voting patterns in TV competitions
Music/RadioRe: Let's Talk Jazz by makin(m): 1:14pm On May 17, 2007
I'm quite surprised going through this thread to see that some people really don't know what jazz is.
A post mentioned ENYAhuh? What has Enya got to do with jazz?
Najee is an instrumentalist, and does instrumentals not jazz.
If you can differentiate that from jazz, its like saying juju and fuji music are the same.
For me, the jazz bands are magical, Fourplay, Spyrogyra and even our own Jazz 38 [I hope they still do the jams at OASIS in Ikoyi on Fridays, I haven't been there since December]

Eric came to do fellow Nigerian Seal’s grammy award winner “Kiss from a Rose.” That is a song of ethereal beauty. From the lyrics to the unusual instrumentation, it is a song I once thought would always be beautiful no matter who performed it. But Idols “fine boy showed me otherwise. The performance was anemic, totally lacking the presence of the original. I’m not sure Eric deserves to be in the Top 5 but of course nothing concerning Idols conforms to logic.
From day one, I found this "rabbit-ear" dude to be a fluke, His first spectacular, he went on to do a sing a long with audience.
He made Tosin Martin's (soon- to- become)classic song sound like a Mike Morrison synthesized nasal renditions, and during the double header, he and along with galpal Temitayo gave us not one but TWO dull performances.
Can someone please tell the Abuja fine boy that audience desires to hear the song, not sonorous warthog snorts!!! angry

Its simple; Jodie is out because people did not vote for her. Its much of a voting competition than a singing competition.
Jodie fans won't bother voting, she's too good to lose, her voice is one of the strongest and she definitely beats the crap pack (see my earlier posts).
Its not the peculiar to her though, last season on American Idol, Chris Daughtry was exceptional and his performances where undoubtedly the best in each round but he was surprisingly voted out and didn't make round of 3.
He went to release a self titled album and has more sales than both Taylor Hicks (winner of American Idol 5) debut and Katherine McPhee -the runner up.
Jodie has got talent, hope she realises her dream.
As for the crap pack they live to die another day.
Pardon me, I voted for Jerrilyn multiple times using a software i downloaded online and customized to fit idol west Africa, It was made for "so you think you can dance"!
Before anyone crucifies me for that, I'm a web application enthusiast and critic, and i can authoritatively tell you that aside Mike Majic, the voting system is the worst thing about the show. Its not secured and adequate and can be easily manipulated, if you are technologist, you would understand what am saying and can easily check it out, that is a conversation for the tech forum by the way. Its been an interesting show for me and i look forward to season 2 already but without Mike Rubbish or Majic or whatever.
so long Jodie

ITS OFFICIAL; Temitayo can't sing!!!
If her other performances didn't show it, last night we all saw and heard her, not only was she wailing, she missed so many notes, you'll think it was a primary school performance.
Tonight, we'll know whose voting syndicate is more powerful, Jerrilyn or Temitayo: The battle of mediocres
Music/RadioRe: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by makin(m): 8:20am On Apr 27, 2007
who would win? Even Cowell the great cow can't answer that.
Prepare for the worst case scenario, this is Africa, having a "Sanjaya" win this competition is highly probable cos voting patterns are highly erratic and not based on last performance per se.
While the great voice performances of Lara George, Ibitoru and Jarry didn't make it above the 1st stage, the round of six would feature karaoke Eric, Mediocre Jerrilyn and Not-so-good-voice Temitayo.
God forbid a winner from the crap pack as i term them.
Music/RadioRe: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by makin(m): 3:31pm On Apr 24, 2007
Some people do like Jerrilyn, and voting algorithms is helping her go far because every phone and every PC in Liberia is voting for her, if Jarry had not been kicked out earlier, it might have been a different story.
I must confess Timi is superb, and worth every vote available. He makes the songs his own, and has the required carriage to perform them.
Jodie is steadily declining, her over performance and night-club rendition of Tina Turner's song was almost abysmal (borrowed from Cowell). coupled with a bad hair day and embarrassing stumps (legs).
Omawunmi not only can sing but can dance too, to me thats a star.
Eric belongs to bars and karaoke night clubs. Temitayo can add swing bars to her list of favorite places but certainly not worth a BMG contract.
Music/RadioRe: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by makin(m): 12:37pm On Apr 19, 2007
Truth is Mike Majic or (Magic whatever his name is) is making the competition a bore.
He lacks the bite and edge to carry the show.
If given the chance, he should be voted off.
I pray we don't see his face come season 2.
Other boring stuff on the show includes;
Jodie's you-u-u-u-u-u,
Jerrilyn's bottom 2 spot,
Mercy's bent neck,
Eric's karaoke rendition of every song.
And to vote more than once is as easy as drinking coke, all you need to vote and revote 100times over; is an hour of your time.

I think by now, Jerillyn scaling the hurdle again has shown she has a fan base. and the facts which can not be forgotten
[list]
[li]She is the only non-Nigerian remaining in a West African Competition[/li]
[li]She has a very sorrowful story to tell, and more emotions displayed on stage when its drop time.[/li]
[/list]
I suspect a syndicate is voting for her repeatedly.
Joan has a good voice but the magic wasn't really there.

I had posted earlier that Lara being a success already with KUSH was going to be her undoing!
Idols West Africa especially this being the first edition would seeking a perfect poster person, That is a definite as they come, someone with an African story, good looks, remember able performances and a presentable voice.
Its obvious already; Some great voices along with Lara did not make the top ten for not making up in other areas, Jarry & Oge [on my scale] performed better than jerrilyn in group 2.
Ernst from Ghana [group 3] had a better performance then Uche [group 1] relatively.
Brilliant Ibitoru had set high standards being the first performer, but i guess an over made up mother of 2 without a precise vocation might not appeal to the rest of the world.
But Africa still has a top ten thats worth it, Jodie and Omawunmi make my favorite 2 for the title, Timi i feel is the strong contender, Jerillyn is the perfect poster girl with her story, she needs an okay performance to make it.
Temitayo hasn't proven her voice capabilities, and when she gets to sing a song which doesn't require booty shaking, we'll know her true worth.
Can't wait till sunday!
Music/RadioRe: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by makin(m): 9:12pm On Mar 21, 2007
1st group were very good, i don't know what the organizers where thinking of but they put very good 6 singers in that group, only to have 6 average (and below average) performers in the next group.
I think the top 2 in group went in deservedly but it was a tough call, Lara (Bajomo) George is already an established performer, with KUSH she had performed for a number of years, she has an edge over all the other contestants and i think people won't forget this when voting, at a time this would affect her.
2nd group was simply not in class of the 1st, I think Jarry was simply unlucky, and his choice of clothing was a sad one. Even Nana(the female judge) commented on his looks not being an advantage, i think an idol also needs the looks not just the voice. Eric gave us a good performance, and on the night of not so great performances, his was relatively good. Jerrilyn (for the avid watchers) would always scale through as long as she doesn't sing off key. Her history sends the shivers down many spines and the sentiments would always play a part, she would make a nice poster girl for what Idol west Africa is all about -from grass to grace. She can only be her own undoing, cos if you ask me, Oge's performance was far better.
As for 3rd group - Ama for all her great looks, didn't have a lovely night, maybe it was the crowd or the occasion but she faltered from the word go, Ernst and Mercy did do well and choosing between the two (for me) was hard.
but undoubtedly, the Lady of the competition so far is Jodie, She's been impressive right from her 1st auditioning, and at top 80 cut, she was fantastic, drawing a standing ovation from her peers. I think she's the one to beat
We'll see what the 4th group has to offer come weekend.
But i hope to see Lara win a wildcard.

Its depressing that nigerian youths can express their greed even on forum like this.
A year of community service even in an hamlet, is not only beneficial to the poor community which you are posted too, but an opportunity for you to see life from another view.
The only opportunity those people have for quality education and an introduction to the outside world is your person and your knowledge.
I was amazed to see how backward some places in the eastern nigeria is, and how errorneous most lagosians view the rest of nigeria.
You can only appreciate a culture better if you experience and get to understand the people.
The partiality involved in the primary postings happens in everyday nigerian life, not limited to youth service alone, so even if you are petochemical engr graduate teaching in primary school during your service year, it doesn't stop you from getting into shell after your service year, if indeed you are worth working in shell.
