When it comes to used naija cars , am not a big fan of it .. Have made it clear several times on Nairaland.


The ones I retire from my uber fleet are sold by my mechanic. Once my mechanic advices me to get rid of it I do it. He looks for buyers himself and sells it off. And my currant ones on uber are still serving me well.


You are mechanic and u have created a niche for urself for both Tokunbo cars and used cars sales. You are at an advantage than me ..

But me personally I just don't have the passion or the motivation for it .. Car business itself is stressful talk less of selling naija used ...... There is market for everything and of coz naija used cars. Even naija used cars sells faster than Tokunbo......

I respectfully say that I am not shifting goal post , but stating the obvious. There is a market for it , I just don't have the passion for it..

My early years on uber thought me alot on how the maintenance culture is in the Nigerian Auto world. Have been dramatize by it..........

Why did your dad wait till it is out of warranty to start using 20w50.......

20w50 is for old engines my brother.. It is very hard to see it here in Yankee.. It is not commonly sold here.....

For any major damage to occurred .. You said your dad bought the car brand new since 2005. He has been using 20w50 etc.. How often does he drive the car? Does he do up to 12k miles a year.. With Lagos traffic like New York and over crowding all over the place. How often does he drive the car for any damage to really occurred.. I doubt it that much...

Some cars will have head gasket issue . you might not know. But the more you drive it the more the problem will eventually come to surface ............

20w50 is not a common oil here in the states. You really have to go find it .. It is not commonly sold here. Modern engine have tighter clearance and 20w50 will be too thick for such

To start with TOKUNBO engines.. When buying tokunbo engines in Nigeria, you don't know how long that engine has been used.. That engine might look good , but more than likely has more miles..
Unlike the USA , you can call the junk yard and they can tell you the mileage on the engine. The lower the mileage of the engine the more expensive it cost.......

Most importers that come to buy parts in the USA or elsewhere like u said will look for salvage cars to buy. The salvage car could have 200k plus miles on it. And the same engine that will be sold in Nigeria market....

Now would it make sense for me to buy a tokunbo car in Nigeria knowingly that the engine has been replaced in Nigeria with Tokunbo engine. Without knowing the true mileage of the car ? To me I will not do that.. And am sure the seller will not tell the buyer. It decreases the value of the car ......

And once there is engine replacement, the car will never be the same as manufacture fitted engine. A good mechanic that knows his onions, will tell you that the engine has been replaced ........All these things devalues the car....

And I doubt ur friend Val discloses this information to buyers......

Now the question remains why do Nigerian imports so many engine into the country? Why do we keep replacing our engine at such a high rate. Any other parts might not sale .. But engine parts will always sell no matter the condition.......

In the USA or Europe will follow owners manual to prevent us from changing engine.. It is very expensive and labour intensive.....

I have preached over and over for car buyers to do their due diligence when u buying cars .. Few hear most don't ......

When I say Toyota is the most abused cars especially naija used nobody wan hear.. When people see used Toyota for sale , they loose their senses. And forget to due diligence.....

And when buyers see good deals that is worth the money. The buyers will start pricing the car like nonsense... So it is tough market for both parties...

This is not a good sign at all . if there was sign of leak on the ground . Than good news at least u can try to trace the leak ... But if there is no sign of any leaks at all .. It means the oil is burning somewhere and more than likely the engine is bad .. You can always ask for a second opinion .........what type of oil were u using?

My experience from my uber cars .. During my early yes of uber with no experience with car maintenance. I used a 2003 camry at the time on my fleet. I was using 20w50 xhp The engine kept shorting oil with no sign of leaks on the ground and little white smoke coming out at morning start up very little smoke.

So my mechanic advice to top the engine with 20w50 and sell the car.. So anytime a buyer comes to look at the car . we start the car up to clear up the smoke before any buyer shows up . And that is how we were able to sell the car .. And from there on I vowed never to use 20w50 oil again.......
