This is the most asinine thing I've read in a long time. A citizen calls a police patrol team that's on duty on an assigned beat to escort him to go pick up a prostitute. They foolishly abandon their beat and accompany him to go commit an illegal act. In case you don't know, prostitution is still illegal in Nigeria. OP, next time you wonder why Nigeria is all messed up, look yourself in the eye in the mirror. That's your answer right there!

I'm in unison with that but i think the U.S consulate can do better with filtering people without cogent reason to jet into their country. It's distasteful that I have to trash a whole year work of data analytics and research just in preparation for this.
This visa regime too shall pass, its only a matter of time. The U.S. govt knows how to fix this illegal migration issue but heaven knows why they don't act. The loopholes are so glaring and easy to take advantage of. In reality, outside of familial ties or a job sponsorship/ education visa, there is really no other migration route to the U.S. for Nigerians. If they created a separate migratory path and blocked the change of status route through a non migrant visa, things will shape up real quick

But can somebody without paper own a car or have any other asset in the US?
Yes. To own a vehicle, you need a drivers license which can be obtained before getting out of status. Drivers licenses are under the purview of states and in fact, there are some that issue it to illegals. I believe California is one if I'm not mistaken. In addition, many people purchase vehicles and title under someone elses name due to the inability to obtain documentation.

And guess who they said are some of these people who have join in the bandwagon with this move? Nollywood actors/actresses.
Naija no dey carry last! I have heard of well organized syndicates in Chicago, NY, Texas. Maryland, St Loius, nd a few other big cties. They will provide the citizen and an attorney and even help organize the court wedding If you don't have cash to pay, they will link you up with money lenders or pawn brokers who will pawn your assets like a car for cash. If you don't move in those circles, you will never know. Amongst other issues, this is why some of us Nigerians in the diaspora identify as Ghanians and pretend we don't know whats going on. We have worked too hard and gone too far to be associated with all the nonsense we see from our country people out here.

You are taking a big leap of faith assuming majority of the people currently getting visas have the intention of returning to Nigeria. Anectdotal evidence shows a huge increase in the number of our brothers and sisters arriving here and immediately seeking out ways to remain behind. Some are here on scouting trips to see what is possible/test the waters. This thing is a big business. There are people here that match them up with citizen husbands/wives for a huge fee to facilitate the change in status. Attorneys make big business out of it by seeking loopholes to get their clients through
haha!...You're right. However, those Nigerians that keep complaining of being denied US visa because other Nigerians has been found abusing the visiting visa when given should just get over it and move on with applying to other Countries to visit if indeed their real purpose to the US was just to visit and nothing else.

Do we know how many people from Countries with visa-free access to the US also abuse their visits? They are in thousands too...but you don't see the US embassy stopping other people from those same Countries visa-free access to the US.[/quote]

The distinction is in the statistics. The vast majority of visa waiver countries have an in-country overstay rate of less than 1%. Nigeria's in country overstay rate is almost 15%. However, the U.S. does not discriminate when offenders are caught. I have witnessed (at the airport) severe grilling and actual deportation of people from visa waiver countries when it is determined they are abusing the status. In addition, if visa waiver status is withdrawn, it is almost next to imposible to get a U.S. visa.

Wow!!!...What a very embarrassing event embarassed

It looks like your friend's parents must have been one of the un-educated ones.

Reason is because they would have known better that it's the man that determines the sex of a child and not the woman.

What if let us just pretend that your friend out of weakness had agreed to his parents pressure and then went along to impregnate the lady and then she ends up still giving birth to a female child? what would your friend's parents have done? Find him another woman to try again huh huh
You gotta have thick skin to survive in the Nigerian environment. Embarrassment was the least of emotions when this situation came down. He was very angry and bitter. Lots of background history in the story. His father abandoned his mom with 7 kids when my friend was a teenager... about 13 years old. He struggled through high school but God blessed him with academic prowess. He got a state government scholarship to study in the US. The state stopped paying after the first year and he suffered in his second year working odd jobs. Finally, he got a full ride scholarship and was made a research assistant due to his hard work and fantastic grades. Went on to get masters and PHD.
All through school, he was sending money home to support his mother. This is how she managed to build their first small family home.
The father showed up on the doorstep one day and Mom let him back in because he had nowhere else to go.

Due to his experience growing up, he vowed never to have more children than he can take care of. In fact, he had already had a vasectomy when we went to Nigeria so having more children was not even an option at that point. I will not pass judgement, but his dad manipulated his mom to go along with the plan. We later learnt that she was not happy about it.
As per not knowing how male children are conceived, you will be surprised as to the large number of educated illiterates that exist in Nigeria. The advent of the internet has been a huge blessing in Nigeria because it has vastly increased the knowledge of the younger generation. The older ones are a lost cause.

This is the second time you're going to mention this highlighted statement.

Are you the father of 4 and a youth corper that is serving?

Either way, having more kids than you can financially afford to sustain and support in this very harsh Nigeria Economy is very unwise of such a person.

Now as per the other excuses the you listed there concerning the un-fair practices of opportunities being practices in Nigeria well unfortunately that is the evil beast of Nigerians that only the strong and fearless can overcome.
This is one bad part of our culture. Even if a man wants to have only one or two children as he can afford, family will put pressure on him to have more especially if he doesn't yet have a male child. About 9 years ago, I went to Nigeria with my best friend who had 2 female children at that time. He did not want anymore kids and had told his parents that he and his wife had made that decision. We arrived at his family house where they welcomed us warmly and served us food. I noticed the young lady that was serving my friend and I. She did not serve anyone else and she would kneel down whenever she placed anything in front of us. My friend asked who she was and if she's a relation. His dad said no, that shes just helping out around the house. My buddy asked why and if shes not in school. His Dad said to leave that line of questioning that they will discuss later. After lunch, his Dad called him into the bedroom and told him that they had married a second wife for him so that he could bear male children. My buddy stormed out of the room, slammed the door and was cursing at the top of his voice. This guy is usually cool, calm and collected, he's a college professor. I have never seen him so upset. I had to restrain him and cover his mouth so as not to insult his Dad. Imagine the effrontery. They said he should impregnate the girl and leave her with them for a few years then come and bring her over to the U.S. later. Long story short, he told them off and left. Did not go home again for 5 years. We joke about it today but it wasn't funny back then. Neither of us told our wives about the incident to avoid trouble grin

The catch all phrase for most of these jobs is "petty trading". In reality, a vast majority of Nigerians survive on small scale/petty trading, small scale manufacturing and farming. The government and private sector employs a smaller percentage of Nigerians. I recall seeing some statistics that put Nigeria's labor force at about 60 million with 70 percent involved in agriculture as an ocupation. But don't look down on these jobs. Many raise families and educate their kids through university level on these jobs.

OP, I would bet a months pay you have sleep apnea, but that would be speculation. You could mention this to your doctor and see if you can do a sleep study. Your BP is still at a level that could probably be managed by diet and EXERCISE! EXERCISE! EXCERCISE!
I mention excercise because it will first of all help you sleep, and second lower your blood pressure. Start slow, walking and slow jogging. If you have access to any equipment that enable low impact aerobic excercise like an elliptical or rowing machine, go for it.
Swimming is also a good form of low impact excercise. If you work out in the evening after work, you should be tired enough to fall asleep by bedtime. The more sleep you get, hopefully your blood pressure will come down.
I would avoid most prescription sleeping pills as there is a likelihood of dependence and addiction. Try melatonin, it supports the bodies natural sleep cycle and is non addictive. Wish you the best as you work things out.

I'm flabbergasted that the tangential topic of what it takes to be financially successful in Nigeria or the U.S. is still being debated, what with all the information publicly available. A quick look at what groups are financially successful in either country will tell you what's up in each location. I personally don't know any immigrant in the U.S. who went back to school or upgraded their education or is a working professional that is struggling. In Nigeria, if you want to be financially secure, you need to either work for an oil company, or customs/immigration, be a politician in the ruling party, be a high ranking policeman or member of the armed forces or hone your yahoo skills ..... among other things..... (any position where you have the public by the literal nuts and can seek proverbial patronage).

Any Nigerian that comes to hustle in the US (menial jobs) without a long term plan to upgrade will have a relatively uncomfortable existence, just like their American citizen counterparts working similar jobs. However, if the intention is to work several jobs and send the money home to support family and build up some assets there, then I guess it may be worth it for them. Think about it, this is exactly what the Chinese and Indians are doing in Nigeria. They take advantage of the fact that Nigerians treat foreigners better than themselves. You see high school graduates from India or China come to Nigeria and take up managerial positions with relatively large pay, supervising much better qualified Nigerians. They have all the benefits of an expatriate position and repatriate their earnings back home to family while living almost expense free in Nigeria.

The chief antagonists on this thread have mocked the America culture of debt. For the sake of enlightenment, I would like readers to peruse this article from CNBC, on Warren Buffet, one of the riches men in the world.

"It would seem like common sense that if you had enough money to pay cash for a home that you would, right? Not so fast. Take a look at a recent interview with Warren Buffett on CNBC where he explains why he took out a mortgage in 1971 on a second home, even though he could have easily paid cash for the property.

Buffet's mortgage borrowing strategy can teach the average homebuyer a valuable lesson in the financial benefits of owning a home. Sometimes borrowing money, and thus incurring a debt, is a sound financial decision in the long run. In this case, Buffett used the money that he would have paid to own the house outright to buy more Berkshire Hathaway stock. With the cash, he saved taking out a mortgage on the house he put into the stock which he says would now be valued at an astounding $750,000,000!"

True dat. Even with a dollar to dollar comparison, folks should note that in England or America, your take home pay is for feeding, rent or mortgage, transportation flexing etc. and you can choose what level of a decent life you want to live. Take home pay in Nigeria is also for those items but in addition it's for generating electricity and water supply, security, bribes, healthcare, savings for pension, school fees, maintenance of assets due to poor infrastructure, etc. Wages in the western world may appear small if you think they are spent on what Nigerians spend their disposable income on.

I can't help but laugh, 60,000 pounds really sounds like a lot of money don't it? Bloody paupers grin grin grin grin. If you were educated and networked yourself properly you would find those jobs in abundance. Back when I worked for J.P. Morgan Chase, the senior auditors and software engineers at the london offices made more than 60,000 pounds per year. I also know Pricewaterhousecoopers(PWC) pays their consultants and senior consultants well above that. How many jobs do they give to black people? I don't know, all I know is that I have over 20 friends and family members making around that easily, if you are not so fortunate UPGRADE yourself instead of insulting people on Nairaland, especially people beyond your level!
I can speak from personal experience in the U.S. $60k - $70k salary is like starting out in many professional disciplines. Most of my friends and family are professionals and I can attest that we Nigerians are earning good salaries. If a professional told you they earn $150k salary, it most likely does not include incentive bonuses (anywhere from 10 to 50%), stock options and or profit sharing. An executive that earns a $300k salary could easily get another $500k to $1 million and even more in stock options.
The most successful Nigerians in the U.S. are those that pursued a passion. They got well educated, pursue their passion and became extremely financially well off in the process.

But enough about money and finances. It doesn't make sense to argue about which country is better based on finances. Most western countries have evolved to where the citizens are pursuing higher goals other than financial, and success is defined in much broader terms. Nigeria on the other hand is still grappling with basic issues of day to day survival so getting the most money one can get besides paramount and even so enough to transfer to ones offspring

I can attest to the average Nigerian government worker running several side hustles. Have you ever been to any state or federal government office? First, literally nobody shows up on time grin. Most are selling something right there in the office and on top of this, you have to pay tips/bribes to get anything done.
It appears very few Nigerians understand the concept of leverage. In the West, borrowing is not just a means of enabling consumption today, it is also an investment vehicle. You don't borrow just because you don't have the savings to buy outright, you do so because it is the financially smart thing to do. If I borrow to buy a house, I gain in several ways. I can borrow at very low interest rates circa generally less that 5% APR vs in the teens to 20% range in Nigeria and invest my savings at higher returns in the market and at lower tax rates. In addition, all things being equal, my house is appreciating over the years. If I decide to get out, it's very simple. I sell, pay off the bank and pocket my gains after taxes. As for a car Why would I pay outright for a depreciating asset when I can finance it and invest my money elsewhere and earn good returns? Win win all the way around. Unfortunately Debt is still frowned upon in Nigerian from a cultural perspective because the country is still phsycologically in the 18th century and yet to fully grasp modern concepts. One sad thing about the country is that with the advent of the opening up of the internet, we have imbibed mostly negative aspects of western culture and ignored a lot of the positives.

If you are on a £100,000 salary in the Uk, your salary is taxed 45%

On your payslip all you will see that is going to your bank account every month will be £4,583

45% percent of your yearly must madantoroly go to the govt as Income tax

Now convert £4583 to naira every month and tell me if it is up to 3 million naira

Chai I even thought you knew a lot about the uk Kai so I have been wasting my time talking to you

So you thought all the £100,000 your friend earns goes to her chai see ignorance ooo
The UK, like many other Western countries runs a progressive income tax system not a flat regressive tax system like you describe.
Using the 100k example, lets apply the letter of the law and figure this out the right way based on 2019/2020 rates.
Personal exemption 12,500. 0%
Basic rate 12,501 - 50,000. 20%
Higher rate 50,001 - 150,000 40%
Additional rate - over 15,000. 45%

Assuming you have no allowable expenses, your taxable income = 100k - 12,500 =87.5k
The first 37.5k falls under the basic rate of 20% = 7.5k
The next 50k falls under the higher rate of 40% = 20k
Total income tax liability = 27.5k
Add national insurance of 5,964 for total liability of 33,464
Annual pay net of taxes = 66.5k which is 5.5k per month on a straight line basis

If your take home is 4,583, it implies you are contributing approx 960 pounds to an individual pension on a monthly basis! This will be in addition to the state pension under national insurance.

Please help me comprehend what the Nigerian people are complaining about. Hard statistical evidence does not show that we have had enough of our useless leaders. In fact, the evidence shows that we are extremely happy with the leadership we have.
As recently as May of this year, the ruling political parties had a landslide victory at the presidential polls. Out of 28.6 million votes cast, APC and PDP combined recorded 26.5 million votes, a whopping 93% of the ballot. PDP had been voted out as recently as 4 years ago by a dissatisfied electorate while the populace had generally whined and declared the ruling APC government a disaster in a run up to the recent elections.
Are you telling me that only 2.1 million people (or 7%) of the voting populace had the good sense to vote for anyone but APC or PDP? By extrapolation, we can assume that a good number of our youths who are of voting age and are now grumbling all voted for APC and PDP. When we all start voting with our sense intact, the World will take us serious and we will maybe see some real change.

I will speak for myself and myself only. I asked this question a couple times on this forum......Outside of family ties/direct employment/schooling, how does a Nigerian legally migrate to the U.S? The vast majority of Nigerians looking to move to the States are doing so on a tourist visa and expect those that are residing legally in the country to help/advice them on how to execute an illegality. This may sound sanctimonious, but anyone that openly aids and abets an illegal act is foolish and may pay some unintended consequences. I will not denigrate other nationalities, but when it comes to immigration shenanigans, Nigerians are learners so don't compare them to us unless you condone illegal acts.

That is not entirely true, American farmers also depend on China to buy their products. Now China has decided not to buy soybeans from America and seek supplier elsewhere.

Another false statement is...China's economy lies in Americas hands and Americas economy lies in Americas hands..if that is the case then the trade war should be hitting only China but that is not the case, its 2ways traffic, no country can survive on his own.

America alone can not consume what they produce, if that is the case then China can also do the same because China is more populated.
Because I work for a global company, I have a lot of insight into this trade issue. China has decided not to buy soybean directly from American farmers anymore, but they have to buy from American companies which control almost 90% of global grain trade and its infrastructure. I encourage you to read up about the ABCD agricultue companies. These companies have locked up grain trading across the world. China will not buy soybean originating in America but will buy it from Brazil and Argentina. Guess what?.... these companies are moving grain from the US to Argentina then shipping to China. This is what they do. China is buying up chicken agressively from American companies that operate out of the Asian region because of the recent outbreak of African swine fever in China that has decimated pork production. China is not really self sufficient in their food production.
The funny thing about China not buying American soybean directly from American farmers is that farmers are receiving and will continue to receive guaranteed insurance payments from the government, that buys up their stock for national security stockpiles. Guess how the government finances these payments that are running a deficit? Chinese government buying up us bonds grin. America wins again

Yes but hurt American economy even more, China has the money and most especially weaker currency so they can sell their goods quicker then America.
So, let describe how this works. Scenario 1: China calls in the debt, America pays up. America borrows more money from China to finance imports from China as America will not buy without them financing and China cannot sell otherwise. America wins!

Scenario 2: China calls in the debt and America pays. America slows down imports from China and their economy suffers. China buys American assets and treasury bonds like they have always done becasue that is the safest place for their money. America wins again! Case in point, the recent inveterted yield curve where short term rates are higher than long term rates due to China and the rest of the world rushing into American bonds as the markets went crazy.

They are laughing in secret while America continue to deceive the world with nominal GDP figures when the actual way to campare economies is in GDP PPP
You fail to realize that China's economy is mainly driven by exports. If other countries (especially America) do not buy, China is screwed. Americas economy is largely driven by consumtion. In simple terms, China's economy lies in Americas hands and Americas economy lies in Americas hands grin. In addition, China makes what they are told how to make. The technology of the stuff they make originates in the West. If America wisens up (which Trump is trying to do) and stops the transfer (stealing) of this technology, they are screwed.

Yes now...the African Countries....lol! cheesy
Being of African descent, it really pains me to say that African countries are not really of note and are only being used as pawns in the grand scheme of geoplitical policitcs. We will take money/assistance/help from whomever offers, including the devil himself! We were hoodwinked by the colonials in the first go around, now the Chinese are hoodwinking us with their false gifts. Africa is only paid any atention because it has recently become a breeding ground for terrorists and because the West doesn't want the dark continent to spread any new diseases to the world. The rest of the world will stop exploiting us and take us seriously when we stop doing so to ourselves. If Africans are wise, they will look to countries that helped them when they didnt really have to. Where were the Chinese when Rwanda blew up (outside of selling arms)? Who took in refugees from Somalia? Who has been fighting aids in Africa?

..and US is owing China how much? Yes a whopping $1.11 trillion!!

All you listed above are all fighting talk as you know that things can change with time, China is building their reputation around the world by investing in other countries, giving out cheap loans, getting involved in a big capital projects in many countries the same way America did years ago so as to influence domestic policies.

American influence and domination around the world will keep diminishing year by year and if you don't know this then you are living in another planet.
In absolute terms, 1.11 trillion is a whopping number. Relative to the U.S. economy, it is not significant. It is not in China's interest to call in their debt because it will actually result in hurting their own economy (and this is why they havent done so).

Things indeed can change over time but will things actually change? China is trying to build their reputation, but are they actually convincing anyone of note? Apart from Russia, which other countries of note in their region are aligned with China? Which other countries will eventually buy into their overtures? Absolutely none in my opinion. Countries are begining to see through their shady pratices. China is investing and giving out loans, but guess what? When these loans default, what is China doing? They are seizing assets. They kick you when you're down. America did the opposite, they forgave loans. They gave out grants. They provided free healthcare, access to technology and education. China is not really winning over the hearts of the people like America did. America helped build up nations and created regional powers that now stand with it. China is on a resource grab to make itself great like the European powers did during colonial times. Very big difference
