Killer Herdsmen In Ondo Communities: Set Farms, Villages Ablaze In Molege

Communities in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State recently witnessed the return of killer herdsmen, leading to the loss of lives in three attacks within10 days. HAKEEM GBADAMOSI writes on the effect of the siege and steps taken by the state government and security agencies to forestall recurrence.

The month of January will not be forgotten in a hurry by residents of three communities; Molege, Arimogija and Okeluse in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo state, where suspected Fulani herdsmen massacred and dislodged the defenceless residents, injuring scores and sending fears to other members of the neighbouring communities. At the end of these attacks, the gunmen had killed 10 people within 10 days while one of the communities was also set ablaze, leaving hundreds of residents homeless and the villages deserted.

The rampaging herdsmen reportedly invaded Molege community in the middle of the night, killed at least three people, including the community head and set the village and their farms on fire, destroying property worth millions of Naira. The attack, according to some of the residents was as a result of the refusal of the farmers and villagers to allow the herders and their cows to feed from their farmlands.

One of the residents, Mr. Elijah Ayodeji, who said the villagers were awaken by the sporadic shooting from the invaders gunshot, stated that the community head and two other people were not lucky as they were killed in the attack.

According to the villagers, the Fulani herders were about 50 in number and were fully armed, adding that after killing the three persons, they came back 30 minutes later to set the entire village ablaze.

Narrating how the incident happened, the Akarigbo of Ute Land, Chief Felix Olabode said, “I was home when we heard that some gunmen came and killed people here. We came here immediately and we met dead bodies. These buildings have not been razed. But when we alerted the Police, the DPO came and we didn’t know that these people were still around. Not less than 30 minutes after the Police evacuated the dead bodies; the gunmen came back and razed these buildings. They always use guns to scare people away and then bring their cows to graze on people’s farm and drink water. When they are done, they also use guns to scare people away on their way out. People have left, see the level of damage, we are begging the government to come to our rescue.”

It was gathered that men of the Amotekun Corps in the area, who were alerted by residents that escaped from the village, mobilised to the scene only to be attacked in the middle of the forest by the gunmen who engaged them in a duel.

The Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said “while on a routine patrol today at Molege in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, our men were informed that some nearby villages in Molege have been taken over by herdsmen while they burnt down some people’s properties. We moved in with three patrol vehicles and took control of the situation in the village. On our way back, some men suspected to be herdsmen suddenly opened fire on our men in an unprovoked attack. Though they escaped, we are still on their trail”

The state governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, immediately after the attack visited the community with a pledge to bring the perpetrators to justice, but less than 72 hours after the attack on Molege community, the Fulani herdsmen, again invaded the neighbouring Arimogija community around 2pm, killing five people on the farm while several others were left injured.

According to one of the community youths, Adams Osho, the news of the attack on some farmers by the herdsmen filtered into the village and the youths and some members of the vigilante mobilised to the farm, where three people had already been killed. He, however, said the herdsmen who sensed that some of the farmers who escaped from the farm might mobilise to the farm, laid siege in the bush, killing two other people from the team when they swooped on them unexpectedly, adding that the Fulani herdsmen ran away immediately, leaving some other people injured, while the community youth leader, Lucky Augustine was killed.

Recounting the incident, the youth Secretary of Arimogija, Mr. Nweke Izuchukwu Jude, disclosed that five youths were killed in two different attacks by Fulani herdsmen, adding that “they attacked the first set of people on the farm and killed two of them. It was those injured in the first attack that called other villagers for help. But while those who went to rescue them were trying to take the injured back home for treatment, the armed herders appeared again and killed three more people. The armed Fulani men are still in our bushes and farmlands; we can no longer go to our farms.

“They know the topography of the forest more than us, all we need is the support of security men to chase them away and arrest as many as possible. This has been happening for long. They are always coming with AK 47, they were more than 50. One Amotekun officer was shot during the attack. They came and killed the Baale, police came and evacuated the dead bodies and some few minutes later, they came back and razed this place,” he said.

But 10 days after the two attacks, another community in the area, Okeluse witnessed another attack by gunmen who came on three motorcycles, killing two people at a petrol station, including the owner of the petrol station, identified as Aborowa Oladimeji, also known as “Popular.”

According to the source, the owner of the petrol station and his members of staff were closing for the day around 9pm when the men arrived at the station and shot sporadically, they tried to run away but the gunmen shot dead two of the people at the station, including Aborowa Oladimeji, who was shot at close range, and died on the spot while the gunmen left the scene immediately.

The source said the gunmen were Fulani herdsmen, adding that “the sales boy who was also shot by the herdsmen was rushed to the hospital but gave up the ghost the next morning. The owner was shot and he died on the spot. He was about leaving the filling station with his sales boy when the gunmen came.”

Lamenting over the incessant attacks on people of the area, the lawmaker representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency, Hon. Timehin Adelegbe, condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric. He noted that the hoodlums always descended on innocent and defenceless people who were going about their farming activities legitimately, noting that “l initiated and executed the rehabilitation of Arimogija/Molege/Okeluse road last year when the terrorists masquerading as herdsmen kidnapped about six villagers at the failed portions of the road to dislodge them from the road.”

He however added that there was need for a security post at the junction “to checkmate the senseless attacks on the innocent villagers” and said efforts are in motion to set to construct a Security Post at the Junction to further guarantee security of lives and property in the area.

“It has become a matter of urgent importance to provide other logistics such as vehicle to facilitate the patrol of the area by security personnel to ward off further invasion by the bandits,” Adelegbe said, appealing to the people not to resort to self help but report any suspicious movement to law enforcement agencies for appropriate action.

People in affected communities and environs now live in fear while some of them had relocated to other communities following reports that the herdsmen have perfected plans to invade and overrun other villages and camps overnight, though the villagers have been mobilising against such attack.

However, the state government has warned residents against taking laws into their hands in the name of self help or defence. The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, in a statement said the call became necessary following renewed hostilities between farmers and herders in the state. He advised people to shun violence, hatred and tolerate one another for peace to reign while he condemned the latest killings and attacks, describing it as barbaric. He urged citizens to continue to give support to security agencies toward restoring lasting peace and security in the state, by providing prompt information that will enable security operatives to protect the state from attacks.
“Residents in the state, especially farmers, are enjoined to report any invasion of farmlands and unauthorised grazing to the Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, South West Security Network (Amotekun) and other security agencies. None is permitted to resort to self-help.  This reinforced directive, which is the outcome of the State Security Council meeting, is pertinent following renewed hostilities between farmers and herders resulting in casualties in some boundary towns between Ondo and Edo States.

“Undoubtedly, the latest killings are barbaric and condemnable even as efforts have been deepened to apprehend the culprits through inter-state co-operation and synergy. Government, however, believes strongly that such situations are avoidable if security agencies are always afforded the opportunity to intervene before the escalation of violence,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has assured the people in affected communities that those behind the attacks would be brought to book while commiserating with the people over the death of their loved ones, especially the community head.

Akeredolu, who described the attack on the community as unfortunate, vowed that concerted efforts will be made to ensure that such attack does not recur in the state, adding that no government would be happy with the killings of the people.

”I commiserate with you on the death of your loved ones. May their souls rest in peace. No government will be happy with this kind of development. But you have to be prepared. These herdsmen are becoming too problematic. We are not sleeping. You can see Police and Amotekun here. With this one they have done, we will ensure that it is their last evil act here.

“Those behind this are criminals. Those supporting them are all criminals too. Anyone who commits crime will answer for it.”

“The Police and Amotekun with other security agencies will set out and bring them to justice. We will treat them like criminals. Both the police and Amotekun have briefed me that they were being shot at. But for their boldness and courage, the criminals would have overwhelmed them.

Communities in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State recently witnessed the return of killer herdsmen, leading to the loss of lives in three attacks within10 days. Politics / Fear Grips Ekiti Community Over Arrival Of Additional Fulani Herders by mancoconut: 6:43pm On Feb 01, 2022
Fear grips Ekiti community over arrival of additional Fulani herders

occupying large portion of their land, called on the Ekiti State Government and security agencies to come to their rescue and ensure that the Fulani left their land.

“The Fulani had been here wreaking havoc on our farm crops and people, but others were conveyed to this place in three trucks on Saturday. They are over 60 and they arrived at Oke Ako in the night,” the Regent of Oke Ako, Princess Tinuade Ogunbiyi, stated.

Ogunbiyi lamented that the initial Fulani settlers were occupying 70 per cent of the community’s land, grazing their cattle and depriving the indigenes of the opportunity to farm.

The regent said, “They destroy the crops of our people in addition to being threats to the security of lives. Our people can no longer go to their farms.

“The result is that we no longer have food. The prices of foodstuffs have soared. Again, people are migrating out of Oke Ako in droves to guarantee their security. We are helpless. The Fulani are armed with guns and machetes; so, our people have to avoid them and leave the farms for them.

“We are calling on the state government and security agencies, including Amotekun, to rescue us. They are all aware of our situation. They should rescue us. There is the need for a standby joint security task force comprising the police, the Army, Amotekun and local hunters here. I think that will help.”

The people of Oke Ako in the Ajoni Local Council Development Area of Ekiti State have raised the alarm over the arrival on Saturday of Fulani men numbering over 60 in their community.

The people, who expressed fear that the newcomers would add to their pain and sorrow in the hands of Fulani herdsmen already occupying large portion of their land, called on the Ekiti State Government and security agencies to come to their rescue and ensure that the Fulani left their land.

A community leader, Mrs Grace Olofin, who corroborated the regent, said, “We need security, but we don’t want the Fulani men to stay here. We don’t want them on our land, because of the threat that they pose to our security. When they settle down, they perpetrate kidnapping and raping.

“Already, those settled here have been destroying our people’s farms in the name of grazing their cows. For instance, this is the season for harvesting cashew, but our people, particularly the women, cannot get to the farms. All our yam seedlings have been harvested or destroyed by the Fulani herders.”

He stated, “We want Fulani people to leave this area so that our people can return to the farms to boost their economy and lead meaningful lives.

“We don’t want them here, because they demonstrate through their activities that they are enemies to the progress of the communities. They destroy our people’s farm produce and they are committed to leading our people to poverty, hunger and starvation. They also harm our people when they meet them in the farms.

“We can only call on the government to come to our rescue. Let there be security for lives and property. We are living in fear so that they don’t come in the night to massacre our people as witnessed in other parts of the country. The government should help us with security day and night. Our people can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed.”

The Ekiti State Amotekun Commander, Brig Gen Joe Komolafe (retd.), said, “We are on top of the situation; there is no cause for alarm. We are working in synergy with other security agencies to get to the root and ensure a solution.”
On his part, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Sunday Abutu, said, “We got a report on it and effort is ongoing to arrest the situation.”

Politics / How Fulani Herders Killed My Brother, Burnt My House During Late Night Attack – by mancoconut: 4:12pm On Jan 29, 2022
How Fulani herders killed my brother, burnt my house during late night attack – Ogun chief

The Otun Baale of Ita Olori Ejo, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, Chief Elegbede Matthew, tells DAUD OLATUNJI about the recent night attack on the community by suspected armed Fulani herders who set houses ablaze and killed

What led to the recent attack on your community by armed Fulani herders?

That day was a Thursday. We were on our way to the farm when we saw a Fulani man, well known in the area as Alhaji, running. He told us there was a fight at Iyana Agbede, Ijaale, Isiabo. He said some of his cows and those of his people had been killed and they were trying to escape with the remaining cows.

He had barely finished speaking with us, when some boys, whose tribe we could not tell and were dressed like vigilantes with red head ties, appeared and passed by us. Shortly after, we began to hear gunshots in the distance. We would later learn that one Fulani had been killed. So, I was called by the Baale to meet with the police so as to know who was killed.

We have been witnessing such clashes between farmers and herders for a long time. It is something that happens every year; we witnessed one last year with many people killed. It happens all the time and it is barbaric.

Your younger brother was reportedly killed during the last incident. How did it happen?

When the clash started, farmers in the village had to run away from the village. I sent my wives and children to my house in Ilara. Likewise, my younger brother, Olabisi Elegbede, also asked a motorcyclist to take his wife and children to another town. He had an agreement with the motorcyclist to come back and pick him afterwards. I was also waiting for the motorcyclist to take me to join my family. We had envisaged that the Fulani men would come back to attack the village. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist didn’t come back to pick us, so we decided to sleep in my house, hoping that we would leave the village early in the morning of the following day.

But true to our fear, these Fulani men came late in the night, armed with AK-47 rifles and other weapons. Around 10.30pm, we heard sounds of gunshots and people speaking a strange language we could not understand. They came straight to my house but before they got to where I was sleeping, I managed to escape through the back door of the room and ran into a nearby bush to hide. I saw them setting houses in the village on fire and attacking anyone on sight.

Where was your brother at that time?

We slept in the same house but different in rooms. I had thought that he would have also escaped like I did, but, unfortunately, he was not able to.

What happened to him?

After the Fulani men left, some vigilantes in the village came to my house because they had heard sounds of gunshots and saw smoke coming from my house. I joined them then and we started looking for my younger brother. At first, we couldn’t find him because of the smoke but on the second check, through the window, we found him dead in the room; he was shot dead.

How did you feel when you saw his dead body?

I felt really sad. My brother was only 45 years old. They just killed him and made his children fatherless and turned his wife into a widow. He left 16 children. The eldest is in final year at the Federal College of Education Osiele, Abeokuta.

You said such attack is a regular occurrence. What do you think can be done to bring an end to it?

I will like the government to take a drastic measure to build a police post in this area for security of lives. Even, there is no (telecommunication) network in this area, which is another problem. This is an agrarian community; we have no other job besides farming. But this place has now almost become desolate because the frquents attacks are making our people to flee

Now that your brother is dead, how is his family faring?

The responsibility has fallen on me but I am only a poor farmer. I want government to come to our aid; I want government to help to take care of the children that my brother left behind. They need to be taken care of and I am not financially capable.

Also, with the situation in the village, the government would need to help us and save us from hunger because all our farmlands have been destroyed. Our storage houses, maize barns have been destroyed. We have been left with nothing to eat. Many of our people have

Crime / LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY KIDNAPPING: Fulani Herdsmen Shot Driver In The Head, by mancoconut: 9:09am On Jan 29, 2022
LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY KIDNAPPING: Fulani Herdsmen Shot Driver In The Head, I Escaped While They Slept —Youth Corps Member

They shot the driver in the head, he died immediately

Yetunde (surname withheld) is a youth Corps member serving in a secondary school in Ejigbo, Osun State, but has her family in Lagos State, so it was not out of place to desire to visit home for one thing or the other from time to time.

So she did on Friday, January 7, when she left Ejigbo to visit her parents. The first phase of the journey ended in Ibadan, and she boarded an ash-colour Toyota Sienna vehicle with registration number MUS 493 HH from Iwo Road, Ibadan to Lagos.

However, the journey which started smoothly was stalled abruptly by a gang of Fulani kidnappers which jumped on the road at Onigaari axis along Lagos-Ibadan expressway and started shooting.

After killing the driver,  Oluwatosin Aruwajoye, the kidnappers shot one of the passengers, Ibrahim Tiamiyu, in the thigh and took captive of five others, including the shot man’s wife, Sekinat.

But interesting and amazing is the story of one of the captives, the 26-year-old corper, who, after walking in the forest for several hours with the armed men, providentially escaped early the following morning while the captors were sleeping.

Yetunde’s story

Saturday Tribune had an interaction with her and her story from the moment of kidnap went thus:

“When we were taken from the car, the kidnappers directed us into the bush. After walking a distance, they asked us to sit for hours because the gang leader had not come then. They were initially four with us, but became five when their leader joined us. They had three guns.

They were Fulanis speaking in their language to themselves but in heavily accented Yoruba to us. Four of them used nose masks, only the leader did not use, so we couldn’t see their faces and we even dared not look at them.

“When he came to where we were, we were on the move again. It was in the evening. We got to some places and rested. The food one of us had in our bag was eaten by the kidnappers but they gave us water from the bag when we asked for it. We would sleep a little bit; after a short period of time, they would wake us up and we would be on the move again.

“It was like they have places they usually sleep on dry leaves. It seems they made it that way so that if any captive tries to leave, they would wake up from the sound of the dry leaves.

“We walked throughout the night. They kept threatening us that they would kill us. After we all slept again, including the kidnappers, a call to Muslim prayers woke me up. I know the Northerners getting up to pray so I thought they would get up. They had tied our hands tightly before then. Even till now, my nerves are yet to be active. I don’t feel with my fingers and can’t hold things. My second finger is so stiff that I can’t use it for anything. They are heavy.

“The lady whose husband was shot was one of the captives. She was beside me. She was very weak and I felt her pains. One of us who was going to Redemption Camp before the kidnap was also very weak. They almost broke her hand. It got to a point she was so frustrated that she asked them to kill her. They didn’t, instead, they used the boots they were wearing to injure her on the hands they tied. It seemed the hands were dislocated. Throughout the night, she used her scarf to cover her hands because the cold got so much into them and it was like they were dead. There was also an elderly man who was fat.

“I woke the camp lady and the one whose husband was shot but they were not strong enough to get up. They couldn’t feel their hands anymore because blood could not circulate. They were tightened so hard. Even when I wanted to urinate, it was the Fulanis who helped me to pull down my trousers as I couldn’t use my hands.

“The lady and I were whispering when I woke her up. They had already untied our hands but I believe they knew what they were doing. They tied them for about an hour and poured water on them to render them dead. Blood was no longer flowing in them and we couldn’t feel with them. Even we couldn’t feel ourselves as we touched each other. The nerve cells were dead already.

“I told her to try and hold a palm tree in front of her but she couldn’t feel with her hands so she couldn’t grasp the tree. She fell down and I couldn’t wait for her anymore. If I tried to pull her, the Fulanis might wake up. That was how I started my journey.

“I had noticed that when they were taking us through the forest, they were moving to the right side, so I was making my own moves towards the left side for about an hour. Fortunately, I got to a place with tree stumps shaded with leaves. I slept there for about an hour to regain some strength.

“By the time I woke up, it was bright morning. I started walking. I was pricked by thorns on my bare feet and hands but I was not feeling them because my limbs were dead. I was using my head to create space to move. I didn’t care for the pains because I needed to survive. I walked for about five hours because it was almost 12 noon, as I learnt later, that I got to a point I could see sun shining. That made me to believe that I was getting near where I would see people.

But interesting and amazing is the story of one of the captives, the 26-year-old corper, who, after walking in the forest for several hours with the armed men, providentially escaped early the following morning while the captors were sleeping!

I walked for about five hours because it was almost 12 noon, as I learnt later, that I got to a point I could see sun shining. That made me to believe that I was getting near where I would see people.

“By the time I walked for another one hour again, I heard a machine being used to cut trees. I walked towards the sound, with the belief that people were doing it. By the time I got close to them, the machine had been stopped and they were about going when I shouted. They were saying: “who is there? Are you not an evil spirit in the forest?” I told them I wasn’t and explained my predicament to them.

“One of them made moves to assist me by cutting the trees and grasses in front of him till he got to where I was. That was when he knew I was a living being. He was like ‘lady, you really tried if you could make it out of this forest alive.’

“The first thing I requested for was a pair of slippers because my legs were aching and the thorns were pricking me on my hands, legs, back. We walked for about an hour before we got to their village in Ogunmakin.

I had requested for water because I was so thirsty and dehydrated but they said they couldn’t give me because it was dangerous to do so for someone with my experience. They said it could lead to death.

I saw a river and wanted to fall in and drink water but they prevented me.

“When we got there, they started removing the thorns with blade. That was when I started feeling pains. Even till now, my hands are still not functioning well. They boiled water for me and a lady bathed me because I couldn’t do it myself. I couldn’t feel any touch. The tree cutter also gave me his shirt and trousers to change from my torn clothes. His trousers were bigger for me but I didn’t have a choice.

They also fed me with cocoyam and red oil, which they said was traditionally therapeutic and would bring me relief, but I couldn’t eat. I was just drinking water. They really took care of me.

The truth hurts.

If Yaribaas want to truly test their relevance and self-touted sophistication as they claim, they should collectively do an experiment... just push for secession from Nigeria and let's see if any other ethnic group in Nigeria will give a damn or even threaten war, the same challenge applies to the parasitic and useless Fulani clowns, the truth is that na only South South and Igbos dey relevant for this country, whether those idiots want to accept this fact or not. I doubt Gowon and the North back in 1967 would have given a toss about Awolowo seceding from Nigeria with his Western region, but the North and their British paymasters were willing to sacrifice millions of lives just to keep the Igbos in Nigeria... that's how low and inconsequential they rated the Yaribaas.

Delta Community In Disarray As Herdsmen Displace Residents, Destroy Farmlands, Rape Women

Residents of Uwheru Kingdom in the Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State have accused the Nigerian police of covering up the activities of herdsmen in the state.

The residents, who knocked the state command for telling lies, added that the herdsmen had been troubling their town for years, killing their people, raping the women and destroying everything that they planted.
No fewer than 14 persons were reported dead in same Uwheru Kingdom in February 2020 after an invasion of the community by the herdsmen.

Some residents of the community, who fled the town following the invasion, lamented that the invaders had overrun their homeland.

According to Vanguard, one of the residents who escaped from Port-Avwon village to Uwheru main town said herdsmen had taken over their village, noting that the people in Port-Avwon presently had lost their farmlands.

“Herdsmen have taken over our village, the people are right there in Port-Avwon presently and they have destroyed our farm crops.

“Last year, they killed three of our indigenes in Avwon; this year, they have taken over the place and if we do not run away, they will kill us. That is why we have run here to Uwheru main town,” she added.

Another resident of the village said, “Fulani people have driven us from our community. Everybody has fled the community; we are calling on the government to help us to remove Fulani people from the community.”

A women leader in the community added, “For many years, Fulani herdsmen have been troubling this town, killing our people, raping the women and destroying everything that we plant.

“These Fulani herdsmen put us in hunger and we have been crying to the government and you know in our community, 99 per cent of the people are farmers and farming is what sustains us, we do not have any company or higher institution.

“Every year after planting, Fulani herdsmen will come from their place and destroy our crops and put us into hunger and as farmers, we are trying to train our children and since Fulani herdsmen are destroying our farms, we cannot send them to school again because we cannot pay school fees and eat.

“This year, they have come again, the small things that we have planted since December 2021, they have come again and destroyed them, chasing people from their farms. We want the government to help us because this situation is very bad. Please we are begging the government to come to our aid.”

There was a commotion in Ondo State as some gunmen suspected to be Fulani herders opened fire on a filling station at Okeluse, in Ose Council, killing the owner of the station and one of its attendants.

The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday evening in the town, which has suffered recurrent attacks from herdsmen, who killed a first-class monarch and razed a community last year.

The slain owner of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) station was identified as Aborowa Oladimeji, also known as Popular, while the name of the other victim was yet to be known at press time.

According to sources in the area, some deadly herdsmen have been terrorising the local government and its environs as the residents live in constant fear.

One of the eyewitnesses, who pleaded anonymity, recounted that the gunmen arrived in the community at about 6:00 pm on Sunday evening and opened fire on the victims.
Sympathisers and people in the area identified the assailants as herdsmen who have allegedly been terrorising the local government for over two years and resumed the onslaught since the beginning of January.

They revealed that the herdsmen hold grudges and grievances against the people of the community for preventing them from grazing on their farmlands.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and stressed that investigations are ongoing on the matter, assuring that the culprits would be apprehended and prosecuted.

The Enuani people who boasts of prestigious persons like Pat Utomi, Madam Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, JJ Okocha, Prof Chike Edozien, Buchi Emecheta, etc have always identified themselves as truly Igbos, and that honor must be accorded them in return if they choose to represent the mandates of the Igbos at any level... Elders in the Yewa axis of Ogun State have said residents of the area now live in fear with the renewed clash that ensued between farmers and herdsmen on Thursday in the Imeko area of the state.

DAILY POST recalls that no fewer than five persons were killed in the clash, even as houses and other properties were set on fire at Idofa village.

In the first quarter of 2021, many residents of Yewa North and Imeko Afon local governments fled their homes and became refugees in Benin Republic due to incessant night attacks by suspected herdsmen, who killed and razed houses.

Therefore, the fresh killing and destructions that occurred last week have created tension among residents of Ogun West, who do not want a repeat of last year’s experience.

The people of the area said the recent clash came at a time when they thought things were getting better between the host communities and the herdsmen, urging the government to nip the crisis in the bud

Elders in the Yewa axis of Ogun State have said residents of the area now live in fear with the renewed clash that ensued between farmers and herdsmen on Thursday in the Imeko area of the state.

The people of the area said the recent clash came at a time when they thought things were getting better between the host communities and the herdsmen, urging the government to nip the crisis in the bud.

The President of Yewa Think Tank and Vice Chairman of Yewa People Development Council, John Aihonsu, described the incident as unfortunate and shocking.

“The issue is rather unfortunate and uncalled for because we thought things were getting better, but with that incident, we don’t know where we are yet. It’s rather shocking. That’s not what we should be experiencing at this point in time. The authority should make sure the root cause of this issue is appropriately addressed to put a stop to such an incident forthwith. It’s really dehumanising for us to be experiencing such things in that area this time.

“We know what we have suffered in the time past and we thought are getting some respite, but unfortunately this recent one now has thrown everybody into a state of fear and kind of unsettled mind. So, it should be totally condemned,” Aihonsu lamented, calling on agencies and powers-that-be to rise up and put an end to such incidents,” he said.

The Yewa leader spoke further that repeated clashes between herdsmen and their host communities have hindered development in the zone due to a lack of unity and progress.

According to him, people of Yewa have been compelled to ask if they have any sense of belonging in the society or if there is anyone who has their interest at heart.

He added, “This incident is sad and it will be condemned by any well-meaning person. It is something that one does not pray to continue in that area because it does not bring unity, progress or development. It makes people continue to live in fear. And when you are living in fear, you hardly can think right. There is no development that can come in that kind of situation.

“It brings in a situation where you begin to ask yourself, is there any sense of belonging into this community at large? Or do we actually have people who have our interest at heart? And that is a very challenging statement to anybody who is in a position of leadership or in governance at this point in time. We think those in authority will see it from that angle and address it appropriately before it is too late,”

This is why I'll eternally grateful to ESN for their sacrifices in the East, I have my ears close to the ground on things happening in the East and majority of the fulani bastards have been flushed out from volatile landmarks especially in Enugu and Ebonyi states, the only areas where the fulani bastards sneak in from to attack rural communities are the border communities between Enugu and Benue (like was the case in the recent attack in Eha amufu which shares a border with Benue state)... unfortunately those areas are so remote and the indigenes there live far from the main towns. ESN chased them back before the useless crying governor of Enugu state Ugwuanyi was able to convene his security meeting... My cousin joined the ranks of ESN early last year and he operates in the liberated parts of Enugu West local government area where some of his boys paid the price after the slaughtering many armed bandits that held those communities hostage for years.

Again, Kidnappers Strike On Lagos-Ibadan Highway, Abduct Three

EIGHT days after the last operation by kidnappers on the Lagos-Ibadan highway, during which a driver was killed and four passengers abducted at Onigari axis, the bandits struck again on Saturday and ended up kidnapping three victims at Ishara-Remo axis in Ogun State jurisdiction.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the bandits, about 10 in number, emerged from a bush along the road dressed in military uniform and started shooting sporadically as usual, directing the shots at vehicles and their occupants.

While some were able to escape, including a Nollywood actress, Bimpe Akintunde, who wrote a report on her Instagram page, a source told the Nigerian Tribune that a man was caught by the kidnappers but miraculously, he managed to escape from their grips later.

Meanwhile, staff members of a company who went to attend a ceremony and were returning home were not so lucky as one of the three vehicles conveying them broke down and the other two vehicles waited for the one that broke down.

It was learnt that while repairs were being carried out on the faulty one, the kidnappers suddenly emerged from a nearby bush and abducted three of the occupants of the vehicles.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun State command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the abduction of three persons.

He, however, said that the command had started working on it, with the anti-kidnapping unit, vigilantes and hunters, combing the bush to get the perpetrators and rescue the victims
