Don't you think such can happen because of his integrity?
PoliticsMuhammadu Buhari: The Poor President In A Rich Nation by ManirBK(op): 9:57am On Jun 01, 2019
The poor president in a rich
nation – he is worth N30 million,
270 cows, 25 sheep, five horses,
birds and economic trees, five
houses in Kaduna, Daura, Kano
and Abuja. And the Daura houses
are made of clay.
In a land where a musician has
’30 billion in his account,’ his
president is N30 million worth!
Who is this man and why is he
always redefining life as a piece
of worthless sojourn where
regardless of your accumulation,
you are going to leave it empty
and void? We have ministers in
his cabinet that are undoubtedly
richer than some states in
Nigeria, yet he presides on them
with limited appetite for the
things of the world. Like he said
in one of his off -the- cuff
speeches, ‘‘I came into this world
with nothing and with nothing I
shall leave.’’ If the life of this man
doesn’t awe you, inspire you and
make you contented with
whatever comes your way, then
you have a problem grappling
with the awesomeness of life.
This is the time for investigative
journalists to go deeper in
search of the worth of this man
beyond what he has submitted
in his assets declaration. The
mystery and otherwise of this
man must be unravelled. We
must know the DNA of his
existence why greed, insatiable
needs and materialism does not
define his creed. The man
Muhammadu Buhari is a case in
the study of human mystery.
Beyond his personal discipline,
austere nature and Spartan
lifestyles, time it is we look at his
governance style, where he has
demonstrated leadership, where
he needs to be firm and where
he needs the tight options. So
far, it is difficult to have a
president in Nigeria that has
exhibited true democratic tenet
like Muhammadu Buhari. Instead
of using his enormous power as
president, he has consistently
relied on the provisions of the
law to run the affairs of the state.
Coming from a history of ruthless
use of power, the world
expected a dictatorial president
but it is a new Buhari that has
stunned everyone with his
extreme democratic postures.
While some would argue that ‘his
extreme adherence’ to
democratic tenets is hurting
governance, others think, for the
first time, democratic principles
where rule of law defines
institutions, is taking place and
should be encouraged to
permanent sustenance.
Ad
Like before, the president must
hit the ground running, a repeat
of 2015 where months were
wasted searching for ministers
should not be allowed. The tasks
at hand requires a supersonic
approach where urgency is the
driving force. The gains achieved
in the last four years must be
sustained and the right people
given the push to sustain the
right. Time is very critical in
governance and the president
must utilise it this time.
Laxity, naivety and incompetence
should not be tolerated in the
quest for the next level and last
level of the president. Never
again must he hold brief for non-
performing members of his
cabinet. Those saddled with
responsibilities must be given
benchmarks, targets and
expected outcomes. As it is, in
this last lap, there is no
incumbent to blame but the
government itself. Security
situations that have defied
government huge spending must
be given a closer and out of the
box strategy. Managers of our
security architectures must be
monitored closely and given the
boot where no result is
forthcoming. The time for
learning on the job is over.
Ad
On the economy, the progress
we are making and the tempo
needed must be sustained. The
Nigerian Economy Improved by
2.4 per cent in 2018Q4 and 1.9
per cent in 2018. Full year latest
release from the National Bureau
of Statistics revealed that Q4
2018 GDP numbers grew by 2.4
per cent compared to Q3 2018
growth of 1.8 per cent. This
growth mirrored the
performance of the non-oil
sector which improved by 2.7
per cent. The full year GDP
improved by 1.9 per cent better
than 2017 of 0.8 per cent. This
performance is still weak and
fragile, but then, sustaining it,
going forward, is what will
guarantee national growth. It is
also far below 3 per cent annual
population growth as this
remains a cause for concern due
to its wider on inclusive and
sustainable growth in the
country.
These and many others are our
expectations from President
Muhammadu Buhari as he steers
the ship to the next level. As it is,
the man will be named on the
top list of those who rescued
Nigeria from the grips of looters
and retired those who arrogated
to themselves the landlords of
Nigeria. For now, it’s all about the
man with just N30 million in his
account and holds tight as the
most powerful president in
Africa.

Nigerians are earnestly looking forward to the next level with great expectations and what will make a resounding start for President Muhammadu Buhari would be his choice of Ministers for his second term agenda
PoliticsRe: Buhari’s New Cabinet By Zayyad Muhammad by ManirBK(op): 9:34am On Jun 01, 2019
it has been reliably gathered that the cabinet being constituted by President Muhammadu Buhari could be a bipartisan group of competent Nigerians.
PoliticsBuhari’s New Cabinet By Zayyad Muhammad by ManirBK(op): 9:34am On Jun 01, 2019
Muhammadu Buhari has been inaugurated for a second term as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. What’s next? – A new cabinet. President Buhari has constantly said that he has not discussed with anybody, the composition of his cabinet for his second term as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigerians hope that they will not have to wait for six months for the new members of cabinet to be named, like it happened in 2015.

After the May 29th 2019 inauguration, the entire Nigerian state is anxiously waiting for one thing- President Buhari’s list of ministers. Most Nigerians expect the President to bring on board, men and women who swill enliven his cabinet with new ideas and ‘young minds with passion for development adventures.

President Buhari can achieve another first by taking a different direction from the previous style of presenting names of ministerial nominees to the Senate without their portfolios. If Buhari can be bold enough to send the names of ministerial nominees with their respective portfolios, it will make the screening very interesting and more productive for the Senators while also giving Nigerians a foreknowledge of how each nominee may fare in his/her post. Though, one must admit that being eloquent on stage does not necessarily translate into performing very well in the field.

No doubt, Buhari’s second term cabinet needs some young adventurers, silicon-valley-like-thinkers; men and women who can move the government with the speed of the imagination of most Nigerians. But right-thinking people and admirers of Buhari should not be deceived; Buhari also needs politicians in his cabinet including some of the first term ministers. Sidelining of politicians may be a political suicide for the APC. APC as a political party needs them in some areas- especially to hold the political front for the party when the need arises. Though, during the 2019 presidential elections, most political appointees in the Buhari government became mere spectators in their states and localities, especially in the north- Buhari personally delivered himself.

There are some ministers that did very well in the first term and deserve a return, but many performed below expectations. There are some ministries that President Buhari holds dear- petroleum, finance, solid minerals, rural development, transportation, education, health, and agriculture. These ministries should be manned by professionals. Mr. President should be very strong in this regard. If he finds competent professionals from any village in Nigeria who can effectively steer these ministries, he should be brave enough to appoint them. When professionals are appointed to man very important ministries, they know what is expected of them.

They know they are called to rebuild a system that will shift the governance away from the traditional method of concentrating on only ‘off-the-shelves’ way of improving our society. They will not only saddle themselves with the responsibilities within their portfolio; but also be team players that will bring new and feasible ideas to trigger development in all spheres of the society. They will help put in place, systems that will bring dynamism into governance.

Buhari‘s second term ministers should be individuals whose senses of judgment is centered on the challenges of unlocking the future for ordinary Nigerians.

In fact, Nigeria needs to start a yearly continuous assessment of ministers. Each minister should be given realistic and measurable targets to achieve within a year or two. This is will leapfrog development; bring new thinking and fresh approach to governance. This will also make the cabinet an engine-room to provide broad variety of services to Nigerians, ranging from health to industrial development, security, a sound legal system, and an effective infrastructure and education system. Welcome to the next level.

CrimeAdili Chibuike Ejike: Singapore’s Supreme Court Frees Nigerian On Death Row by ManirBK(op): 7:12pm On May 30, 2019
A Nigerian, Mr Adili Chibuike Ejike, earlier sentenced to death for importing nearly two- kilogramme of methamphetamine, has been set free by Singaporean Supreme Court and released with no outstanding charges.

The Nigeria High Commission in Singapore, in a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said “a three-member panel that delivered the judgment was led by the Chief Justice of Singapore, Sundaresh Menon”. The letter was signed by head of Mission in Singapore, High Commissioner Akinremi Bolaji.

The mission said that Ejike’s freedom from death by hanging by the court made history as the first time such a decision was made in a case involving a Nigerian. Ejike was arrested in November 2011 and has since been behind bars till May 2019 when he was discharged and acquitted.

The letter partly read: “The High Commission affirmed that the prosecution had failed to establish that Ejike knew that the drug bundles in his suitcase were in his possession. “In order words, Mr Ejike was not guilty of willful blindness or deliberately shutting his eyes to the truth if his possession of the drugs.

“The acquittal of Mr Ejike has been termed locally as a miracle of God and I am elated that his freedom from death happened under my watch here as the Head of Mission.

“The trial focused on his knowledge of the substance; while the defence claimed he had no knowledge of the substance, the prosecutor claimed he knew about it.

“However, both the prosecutor and the defence agreed that he was in possession of the drugs, which was sufficient to convict him and affirm the death sentence earlier passed on him by both the lower and appellate courts.” Ejike according to the commission, said his childhood friend in Nigeria gave him the bag that contained the drugs to be delivered to an unspecified person in Singapore.

The mission said Ejike’s claim raised an important issue about how drug peddlers are using unsuspecting people as conduits to transport their consignments, at the risk of the lives of the possessors of such substances. It therefore, called for joint awareness campaign for Nigerians travelling abroad not to accept to travel with any bags or container that they have not personally packed by themselves for the journey.

“There is the need for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to join hands with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies, especially the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigerian Immigration Service to develop a framework to rehabilitate such Nigerians returning from abroad into the society.

“The Immigration Services of Singapore would release Ejike to travel to Nigeria on Wednesday, May 29, on board of Ethiopian Airlines and should be arriving in Lagos to join his family in Anambra, afterwards. “Now, Mr Ejike is a free person and will travel to Nigeria unaccompanied, hoping he has learnt his lessons.

“That he would be wise enough not to subject himself in future to such circumstance that has kept him behind the bars for nearly eight years – from November 13, 2011 to May 27, 2019,” the mission stated. The mission said it celebrated the release of Ejike on the eve of the swearing-in of President Muhammadu Buhari for the second term. The mission congratulated the president and wished him successful tenure.

Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi and his deputy, Alhaji Samaila Yombe were on Wednesday in Birnin Kebbi sworn -in for a second term in office by Grand Khadi, Mukhtar Jega.

Bagudu, in his inaugural speech, assured the people of the state that the state would soon join oil-producing states in the country.

“We have partnered with Nigerian National Petroleum Company, and we have started ethanol programme in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area and other local government areas will soon join,” he said.

He explained that the fuel would not be crude oil but oil made thought scientific methods.

Bagudu said his administration in the last four years recorded huge success in health, education, electricity, infrastructure and agriculture.

“To buttress our recorded success, UNICEF, recently, reported that our immunization coverage has improved from as low as 18 per cent to well over 74 per cent.

“Just three days ago, the Institute of Charted Accountant of Nigeria reported that the state is ranked number four after Kaduna, Jigawa and FCT in terms of adequacy of disclosure and due processes in the conduct of public expenditure,” he said.

“In the area of infrastructure, all the 21 local government areas had been touched with one infrastructure or the other.

“We have constructed over 410 kilometres of new roads and rehabilitated about 500 kilometres of existing roads.

“On education, the performances of our children have improved in WAEC and JAMB; as we have recruited 2,000 teachers to further support our effort of transforming the education sector.

“On electricity, we have achieved 24 hours basis power availability across the state while in agriculture, our name has gone viral in the country courtesy of Anchored Borrowers programme.

“We have achieved success in a number of commodities and rice companies are now springing up and we will achieve more,” he said.

PoliticsJonathan Calls For Electronic Voting In Nigeria by ManirBK(op): 9:59pm On May 27, 2019
A former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has advocated that Nigeria must embrace electronic voting to sustain its democratic values.

The former President disclosed this on Monday at a Lecture/Book Presentation to mark the Second Term Inauguration of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, in Port Harcourt.

Dr. Jonathan said that if democracy must endure, the democratic process must be developed in a way that people will have confidence in the electoral process.
He noted that the African Continent must come up with a minimum standard for the establishment of the Election Management Body.

Dr. Jonathan said for the purpose of confidence building for credible elections, no single person should have the power to constitute the Election Management Body.

He said: “We must come up with new standards for constituting our election management body in a way that people will have confidence.

I believe in some quarters what they do is that a body of people constitute the Election Management Body. It is not in the hands of one person.

“When you leave such responsibility in the hands of a politician, no matter how good the person is, there will be the tendency for people to suspect that the right thing is not done. When people don’t have confidence in the system, whatever they do, it is difficult for the people to accept.”

According to him, “The continental body, African Union, should come up with a minimum standard across Africa for constituting Electoral Management Body”.

PoliticsOkechukwu Enelamah: FG To Create 20 Million Jobs In Buhari’s Second Tenure by ManirBK(op): 9:34pm On May 27, 2019
The federal government plans to create 20 million jobs to reduce unemployment in the second tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday at a stakeholders meeting on job creation organised by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

The minister, who was represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Sunday Edet Akpan, said the Federal Government would create the jobs from the four key sectors of the economy: Agriculture, Construction, Transport and the Services sectors.
The minister said that with the huge level of unemployment in the country, it had become imperative to come up with a pragmatic approach to creating jobs for the people.

He said the ministry had directed the Industrial Training Fund to come up with innovative solutions to create 20 million jobs in four sectors of the economy within the next four years.

“In order to sustain and build on the successes recorded in this regard in the first tenure of Mr. President, we are articulating and strategising with a renewed impetus towards combating the twin evils of unemployment and insecurity,” the Minister said.
The Director General of the ITF, Sir Joseph Ari, said the ITF has equipped over 450,000 Nigerians with life skills and empowered all the beneficiaries with start-up kits within the last two years.

He said: “over 80 percent of these numbers today are earning sustainable livelihoods either in the paid employment or are successful entrepreneurs who are even employing others.
