The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Micheal Anthony Obizi has described Kano rerun election as peaceful.

Obizi, who was deployed to Kano for the purpose of the rerun poll said the election recorded minor violence.
He explained that the reports on various social media platforms were purported by some elements in order to cause chaos in the state.

“We have arrested only 10 people for various election offenses and they will be charged to court as soon as we finish investigation. So, as far as police is concerned the election is peaceful,” he said.

He said there was no report of death from the affected 24 local governments where the rerun election was held.

On the alleged taking over of some polling units by thugs, Obizi said, “If it is true some thugs have taken over some polling units, how can the INEC find its way to bring election materials and officials to the polling units?”

The DIG assured that police would maintain its ground in protecting lives and property of the Nigerian citizens.
He said there was no cause for alarm as far as security was concerned, saying everything was going smoothly.

Kano Supplementary Election: Ganduje executes more emergency projects in crucial ward, shares money

The Kano State Government is going on with more projects and programmes at Gama ward of Nassarawa local government, in the state, amidst criticism of ethical misconduct from activists.

Gama, a densely populated area, is a big decider in the supplementary election in the state scheduled for Saturday..

Mr Ganduje currently trails the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Abba Kabir-Yusuf, by about 26,000 votes in the election declared inconclusive by the electoral commission, INEC.
Because the margin of lead is less than the 141,694 votes cancelled, supplementary elections will now be held in the affected areas, including Gama, one of the most populated.

On Sunday, PREMIUM TIMES reported execution of three projects, comprising refuse evacuation, mass drilling of boreholes and road reconstruction which kicked off almost simultaneously in Gama.

More projects are now being carried out in the area, including direct cash payments that have generated strong criticism from pro-democracy voices.
Gama’s result was cancelled in the aftermath of the March 9 governorship election.
The cancellation followed an attack on the local government’s collation centre on March 11 allegedly led by top officials of the Abdullahi Ganduje administration.

The attack was believed to have been led by the state’s deputy governor, Nasiru Gawuna.
The altercation led to the destruction of result sheets for the ward, according to INEC and returning officers.
Mr Gawuna, the commissioner for local governments, Murtala Garo, and chairman of the local government area, Lamin Sani, were arrested by the police at the scene.

The police command letter issued a statement confirming the involvement of Messrs Garo and Sani, promising to charge them to court after investigation.
Mr Garo has however disputed the police’s account, as he denied any wrongdoing.

More bazaar

Gama, a densely populated area of the metropolis, is bedevilled by a number of infrastructural and development challenges.

Since Friday, the community has been busy, with government workers and contractors executing various assignments on behalf of the Ganduje administration.
On Friday, detachments of refuse evacuation vehicles were dispatched to the area to evacuate long-abandoned dump sites.

On Saturday, two other projects sprang up; asphalt overlay on Gama’s main artery, Audu Utai Road, and digging of at least 11 boreholes in the area.
Since then, a free eye treatment campaign was flagged off, offering surgeries and medication. A health centre in the area, Isa Kaita Hospital, which has been decrepit is now undergoing a massive facelift.

Residents of the area reported the presence of another detachment of workers who are assigned to give mosques in the area quick facelifts.

On Wednesday, the state deputy governor led the distribution of delivery packs to pregnant women with Mr Ganduje’s picture emblazoned on them.
Another set of women were also presented with N10,000 each as start-up capital at the same occasion.
Football kits are also due to be shared to selected clubs located in the area on Thursday.
Mr Ganduje’s handlers announced that the governor will perform the congregational Friday prayer for this week in the community.

Criticism mounts

More voices are condemning Mr Ganduje’s action describing it as open inducement of voters.
“It is clearly a case of voter inducement”, said Jibrin Ibrahim, a professor of political science and senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development.
“He wasn’t doing these projects before this time, and it is interesting to see that nothing is going to Dakata, which is the next ward to Gama. So, it is clearly directed at the voters,” he said.

Mr Ibrahim, however, expressed optimism that the sudden projects would not “fool” voters in the area.
“It is very clear that these projects that Governor Ganduje is hurriedly executing are not budgeted for. They are not in the approved budget.” Said Auwal Rafsanjani, the executive director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC).

“Government is not a personal project to use it for personal gain. I think, if you have a serious state assembly they should have asked how this sudden withdrawal is being done without even proper procurement. It is not just about carrying out these projects. There is no accountability in the manner in which these projects are executed,” he said.
Mr Rafsanjani said the political motive of the projects is glaring.

“The question is, what was he doing all this while that he abandoned these areas without carrying out infrastructural projects in those places?”

Government Defends Action

The state government, however, defended its action as legitimate.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday, commissioner for information, Mohammed Garba, said there is nothing wrong for the government to do anything that is not illegal in order to get support for Mr Ganduje.

“Personally I don’t think there is anything wrong with this. Whatever a politician would do to get the support of the people, provided it is going to benefit the people, I don’t see anything wrong with that,” he said.
“If that project is for the benefit of the people of Gama, and part of strategy, the government decides to execute it at this material time, personally I didn’t see anything wrong”.

PoliticsRe: ‘why Nigeria Should Change Name To Songhai Republic’ by ManirBK(op): 5:09pm On Mar 22, 2019
There’s nothing wrong with the name after all it is the citizens that made up a country not the name. We need to change our mentality and do things the way other developed countries do and everything will be fine.
PoliticsRe: ‘why Nigeria Should Change Name To Songhai Republic’ by ManirBK(op): 5:09pm On Mar 22, 2019
What a laughing stuff! What would Songhai add as a mere name to Nigerian progress.
if you can't see any value that green white green flag represent or symbolised?
Besides; the Agriculture you're trying to neglect had help a lot to your life. In fact the free education you enjoyed, which millions of us could not enjoy today, was achievable through the help of Agricultural productivities.

Please think of offering solution to our judicial problems that has been the bottle neck of our progress.
Politics‘why Nigeria Should Change Name To Songhai Republic’ by ManirBK(op):
A renowned Professor of International Law and Jurisprudence, Akin Oyebode has reiterated his suggestion that Nigeria should do a thorough branding by changing its name to Republic of Songhai.
He had earlier made the suggestion in 2014 as a delegate representing Ekiti State in the then National Confab.

He said people thought something was wrong with him but he believes Songhai has some connection with Africa and giving Nigeria “authentic African name” would give the country a sense of direction.
Oyebode spoke at the University of Lagos during a lecture organized by the UNILAG Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA) titled, “Brand Nigeria: Ignite”.

The varsity don also described the 158 universities in Nigeria as unprepared and not “well provided for”, noting that Nigerian universities are not yet “in the race” of standard world-class institutions.
He said Nigeria should toe the path of Ghana when her first President, Kwame Nkrumah changed the former Gold Coast to Ghana after Independence from Britain in 1957.
Oyebode rated late Nkrumah as a genius as his decision to give another name to the old Gold Coast gave the country and its citizens “a sense of direction”.
He said it was regrettable that Nigeria was not getting it right in many area, adding that something as “commonplace as election” could not be conducted without people being killed and maimed.
He pointed out that even the colour of Nigeria – Green White Green – does not symbolize anything progressive, saying, as late music legend Fela Anikulapo asserted, Green was the colour of stupidity.
“That is why we need to change the flag so that we would not be brandishing our stupidity to the rest of the world”, he said.
According to him, for Nigeria to rebrand, it must change its name. “We need a new name, we need a new brand to give Nigeria a sense of direction so that we can empathize with this symbol of nationhood. Right now, we are alienated from all that we claim to brandish as the epitome of Nigerianness”, he said.

PoliticsFG, Columbia University To Commence Gold Production In Kebbi by ManirBK(op): 9:41am On Mar 22, 2019
The Kebbi State Government is partnering with the Federal Government under the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF) on formalization of Artisinal Miners in the State for Gold production with the support of Columbia University, New York, USA.

The Governor, Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu in a meeting with SMDF led by Hajia Fatima Shinkafi and Columbia University on March 21 in Abuja stated that his administration is supporting a pilot programme to organise & support miners to give them better technology and an available market. The pilot programmes approved by President Buhari will commence in Kebbi & Osun States.

The Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs Team will aid the SMDF in fulfilling its objectives by developing a report that analyzes the challenges preventing formalization of Artisanal & Small Scale Mining (ASM) in Nigeria and suggests ways for the SMDF to incentivize formalization through a strategic use of its capital resources.

A world bank report puts the outflow of illegally mined gold leaving Nigeria at $500m a year. This represents a huge revenue loss for both State and Federal governments in addition to environmental degradation to farming communities and pollution of waterways for people and livestock.

Special focus will be placed on how the SMDF can work with other institutions in accordance with section 34 of the 2007 Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act to register formalize operators and how the SMDF can leverage its financial capital to provide funding and/or services to support the ASM value chain.

Governor Bagudu reiterated his administrations continued focus on creating jobs and support for the diversification of the economy which is a priority of the Buhari administration. It can be recalled that the Governor is an alumnus of Columbia University where he obtained his M.A in International Affairs.

PoliticsFG Begins Rehabilitation Of Port Harcourt Refineries by ManirBK(op): 9:20am On Mar 22, 2019
The Federal Government has kick-started the rehabilitation of Port Harcourt refineries.
Speaking yesterday at the inauguration ceremony in Port Harcourt, Dr Maikanti Baru, Group Managing Director of NNPC, said the move was part of government’s effort to achieve 90 per cent local refining capacity.

The first refinery in Port Harcourt was commissioned in 1965 to process 60,000 barrels of oil per stream day (bpsd), and the new plant in 1989, with capacity of 150,000 bpsd.

The refineries have a combined capacity of 210,000 barrels per stream day, making it the “biggest oil refining company in Nigeria”.

Baru said the rehabilitation would be in two phases, adding that both ENI and the original builders would participate in the process.

“We appreciate the commitment of the managers of the Port Harcourt Refineries because you know how much importance NNPC attaches to the revamping of the refineries to make impact and boost local refining.
“NNPC is committed to seeing they come back on stream,” he said.

He said that refineries had not undergone any Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) since 2000.

“This project is in phases. This refinery has not done TAM since 2000, so, in this particular phase, we are essentially going to open up every equipment and also review every flow system that is here.

“We also look at all the flushes, the transmissions; essentially, this is on thorough inspection and where infringement is minimal, it will be fixed and we close back the system,” he said.
