President Muhammadu Buhari says the Federal Government is already targeting a regime of self-sufficiency in food production and consumption, while radically cutting down on imports of agricultural products that depleted the country’s foreign reserve in the past. Buhari, according to a statement onThursday by his spokesman Mr Femi Adesina, said this at the State House in Abuja yesterday while receiving Letter of Credence from the High Commissioner of Republic of Singapore to Nigeria, Mr Lim Sim Sent. President Buhari said the era of high import bills on food was fast becoming a thing of the past with growing investments in the agricultural sector, favourable weather and collective will of Nigerians to start feeding themselves, and exporting products. “I am very pleased with the relationship we have with Singapore, and we are benefiting a lot from your experiences and investment. “Recently, I was in Kaduna to commission one of your investments in agriculture. We are happy that you are also looking at the agricultural sector because that is integral to our economic blueprint for diversifying the economy,’’ he said. |

Mr Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), says the Federal Government is committed to ensuring that the new National Minimum Wage meets the present economic realities. Mustapha said this at a dinner and award night organised to mark the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) 40th Anniversary celebration. The theme of the anniversary is: “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, National Unity and Social Justice’’. According to him, the Federal Government is conscious of the need to bring wages to meet economic realities. “It is in this regard that the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage was inaugurated to review the National Minimum Wage. “The committee is determined to complete its assignment before the end of this year. “I am confident that the outcome of the assignment would address the issue of social imbalance, inequality and the wide gap of poverty in the country. https://leadership.ng/2018/03/01/new-minimum-wage-will-meet-present-economic-realities-presidency/ Mynd44 lalasticlala oam4j |

Federal Ministry of Water Resources in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), have launched the Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ), which was approved in 2007. Speaking during the launch of the NSDWQ in Abuja, minister for Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, said the standard sets limits for constituents and water contaminants that are hazardous to health. He said the NSDWQ would also provide guides to meeting the mandatory limits and assigned institutional responsibilities including enforcement to stakeholders in line with their statutory obligations. Adamu however observed that much has not been done in respect to enforcement of the standard with water producers carrying on with business as usual without regard for the quality of drinking water supplied to the people. “In the revised standard which we are launching today, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources has been assigned the responsibility of enforcement and we are working assiduously to speed the process of upgrading the water quality laboratories located at Lagos, Akure, Kano, Minna, Enugu, and Gombe alongside the completion of additional six laboratories in Maiduguri, Sokoto, Makurdi, Umuahia, Asaba and Port Harcourt,” he stated. |

The federal government has invested N16.6 billion of the N100 billion Sukuk Bond for the rehabilitation of some roads in the South East geopolitical zone. In October 2017, the federal government had released the proceeds of the N100 billion Sukuk bond to 25 key economic road projects across the country. The director of Highways, South East, Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Adetokunbo Sogbesan, made the disclosure in Enugu yesterday during a media tour of ongoing federal projects in the zone. Sogbesan said the investment is aimed at improving road infrastructure in the zone, adding that four different road sections were covered by the fund. He listed the sections to include the Enugu – Onitsha expressway, Enugu – Lokpanta, Lokpanta – Abia Tower and Abia Tower – Aba section of the Enugu – Port Harcourt expressway. At the 9th Mile – Enugu section of the Enugu – Onitsha Expressway, Sogbesan expressed satisfaction on the job done so far by the contractors, Reynolds Construction Company Ltd (RCC). He said the project, which covered a distance of 58km, is from Amansea in Anambra to Enugu. “Forty kilometres of the road is in Anambra while 18km is in Enugu section of the road. The contractors have achieved about 35 per cent completion of the project,” he said. He said that with the quality of job being done by the contractors, the road would make its expected lifespan of between 20 years and 30 years. Sogbesan, however, expressed concern over the heavy traffic flow on the road. He said, “I pray we get more funding so as to deliver this project at the right time. This project will improve transportation infrastructure. The micro-economy impact of this road will go a long way to help Nigerians”. Also, the federal controller of Works, Enugu, Mr Oluropo Oyetade, said that monitoring of the project had been encouraging since the contractors reported to site. Oyetade said that the contract with a completion period of 36 months was awarded in 2014 but was not funded till 2017, just as he noted that the job is expected to be delivered by December 2019. |
