PoliticsCustoms Officers Smuggle Vehicles, Rice For N30,000 by ManirBK(op): 10:35pm On Feb 23, 2018
Customs officers that are supposed to fight smuggling at the nation’s border points now help smugglers to move vehicles, rice at border points, LEADERSHIP has learnt. Recall that the federal government has placed a ban on importation of foreign parboiled rice and Vehicles -used and new – through the land borders and there javelin been serious clampdown those who smuggle through the porous Borders.
But, since the government announced the restriction, smugglers have devised another means of moving vehicles into the country which included using officers of the border command to smuggle the items into the country. It was gathered on Tuesday that officers of the service are offered N30,000 by smugglers to drive in banned items such as vehicles and foreign parboiled rice from neighbouring Benin Republic into Nigeria.
This according to investigation is going on massively in the border commands of the service. For instance, it was gathered that two officers of the Ogun State command of the Nigeria Customs Service were dismissed by the Customs comptroller general, Col. Hameed Ali, for aiding smugglers to smuggle contraband from neighbouring Benin Republic into the country.
A reliable source from the Customs headquarters said the officers were dismissed after they were found guilty of aiding smugglers to bring in contrabands into the Country. It was further gathered that another recently has his vehicle seized after being caught with smuggled rice and vegetarian oil in his vehicles.
The source said, “Due to the intensive anti-smuggling campaign of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A and the Ogun command of the service, smugglers now resort to engaging Customs officers to help them smuggle vehicles and rice even at times, our officers make use of their vehicles as means of conveyance. “Two officers of Ogun command were dismissed last year and another was pardoned this year but the CAC has warned them that he won’t tolerate officers that engage in unlawful practice.”

PoliticsBuhari Hits Back At Transparency International by ManirBK(op): 9:30pm On Feb 23, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari Friday hit back at Transparency International over its corruption perception index indicating that corruption was getting worse in Nigeria.

Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Malam Garba Shehu, described as misleading and unfair, the ranking of 148 given Nigeria out if 180 countries surveyed.
Shehu said President Buhari asked the anti-corruption watchdog to focus on facts, not fiction.

He said while the Presidency noted and welcomed constructive criticisms from the Transparency International, the organization has a responsibility to reflect the larger picture of the concrete and verifiable achievements of the Buhari administration since it came into office in May 2015.

He said the Presidency was still wondering the criteria or facts used by the anti-corruption watchdog to arrive at its very "misleading and unfair conclusions" in its assessment of the federal government's efforts in this anti-corruption crusade.

He said political will is the first major component of fighting corruption in any country and Buhari had made a huge difference by demonstrating it with the extraordinary courage to go after high profile looters, including former military service chiefs and judges.
He said the rating might turn out to be just a political distraction given the strong views some of Transparency International's patrons had expressed against the Buhari administration.

The presidential spokesman said notwithstanding, facts are facts, and those facts will not cease to be facts even if one does not care to pay attention to them.

Shehu stated: "It was once unthinkable to touch or prosecute the ‘‘big men’’ for corruption in Nigeria but President Buhari has ended impunity for corruption.
"Today, the Buhari administration has made accountability the bedrock of governance and corruption is no longer fashionable because it attracts consequences.

"Blocking leakages for corruption through the rigid enforcement of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) had made life tougher for corrupt officials. He regretted that these efforts were not acknowledged by the Corruption Watchdog."

He said the figures published by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission reveal that N738.9 billion was recovered in just two years of the Buhari administration "and this impressive and unprecedented record is worthy of mention and acknowledgement by anybody genuinely looking at the larger picture of the country's progress in the war against corruption.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kaduna zonal office, has recovered N102 million diverted from the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) in Kebbi.

A statement by the spokesman of the commission,Mr Wilson Uwujaren, said the funds were diverted by beneficiaries of the Central Bank of Nigeria Anchor Borrowers Programme, disbursed by BOA.

Uwujaren said so far a total of N297 million had been recovered by the commission in favour of BOA in Kaduna and Kebbi states.

The Head of Operations of the Kaduna office, Ibrahim Bappa, formally presented a bank draft for the N102 million to one Mohammed Babangida, who represented the BOA Managing Director.

Bappa assured the bank that the EFCC would continue to assist it in the discharge of its statutory duties.
He,however, decried the worrisome trend in which beneficiaries of the scheme diverted the funds, and urged the BOA to ensure proper orientation before loans were disbursed.

The Minister of communication, Alhaji Lar Mohammed, said yesterday that the attack that led to missing of school children at Government Girls Science and Technical College Dapchi was to embarrass the government and attract attention.

The Minister who spoke at a fact finding visit in Government Girls Science and Technical College Dapchi, said with the determination of the gallant soldiers the days of Boko haram is over.

On the case of the number of students being abducted, the Minister said they have not been able to establish how many people where abducted.
"What we know for a fact now is we cannot account for some students but since two days ago students have been reporting back to school.

We also have it on record that some of them have phoned from their hiding place, some from Damaturu, some from other locations. But, as things develop we will let you know.

But, we cannot categorically say 'X' number of students have been abducted but we can say not all students have returned" he said.
Fielding question on the state government statement about the rescue of some of the girls, he said "I think we should take it in context, to me, the most authoritative position is the one given by both the governor, theater commander and the GOC. What we know is that some students can not be accounted for. That is because some of them are still returning back", he added
