Okorocha said remaining silent after the letter would amount to acquiescence. Obasanjo had written a widely circulated letter in which he asked the president not to run for second term in 2019. But speaking to newsmen in Owerri yesterday, the governor said answering the letter personally would put to rest all doubts and acrimonies it had attracted. He noted that the letter was written at a high level, which equally required a high level answer, adding that the president’s response would enable those interested in the number one seat to take decision. Okorocha reiterated his position that he would not run if the president decides to have another shot. |

The minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has disclosed that the federal government has created millions of jobs via its intervention programmes across many sectors of the economy. Alhaji Mohammed disclosed this at the 6th graduation ceremony of the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI), founded by former Rivers First Lady Dame Judith Amaechi, in Port Harcourt on Saturday. He noted that over 7 million jobs have been created in the agriculture sector alone. According to him: ‘’In agriculture, for example, this administration has created over 7 million jobs. When the Administration assumed office in May 2015, about 5 million farmers were engaged in rice production. Thanks to the administration’s Anchor Borrowers Programme, the number of farmers engaged in rice production today stands at 12.2 million. These are verifiable facts, not fiction.” Alhaji Mohammed said 69,736 jobs have been created in the power, works and housing sector, while the administration’s National Social Investment Programmes have created at least 200,000 jobs, in addition to empowering 500,000 others under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP). ‘’The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing has created 69,736 jobs (direct and indirect) across the country. The power sector projects created 1,740 jobs, the works sector created 38,391 jobs while the housing sector created 29,605 jobs,’’ he said |

Increasing criticism and gang up will not force President Muhammadu Buhari out of the contest in the event he decides to go for a second term, a member of the APC campaign team in 2015 said yesterday. Malam Mohammed Lawal who served as Deputy Director, Coordination/Implementation of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in 2015, which worked for the emergence of President Buhari, said many people and groups were uncomfortable with President Buhari’s ‘pro-masses’ approach to governance, hence were deploying various tricks and sense of insecurity to undermine his popularity. Speaking on phone at the weekend, Lawal, a board member of the NNPC, said: “We are in politics; we would tackle any opposition, any group or gang up, be it a coalition or third force or whatever.” Mohammed said it would be difficult to oust a sitting president on the pages of newspapers and denied that key people in the APC were planning to leave for the opposition. “Now, who among the APC leaders enjoying the comfort of government either as an appointee or elected official could afford to go and fish in a deep, dark, torturous and murky waters of political uncertainty? “But I wish them good luck. |

The House of Representatives has debunked reports that $44 million belonging to the National Intelligence Agency was missing noting that the fund was rather moved from one place to another. Chairman of the House committee on public safety and national intelligence investigating the issue,Hon Aminu Sani Jaji, confirmed this while speaking to journalists at the weekend. Jaji who was giving update on the investigation said,“We had a meeting too with the NSA Maj.Gen. Monguno today. We later discovered from our meeting since last week that the $44 million isn’t missing.I can tell you that they moved the money from one place to another. We’re still investigating. “If we get 60 to 70 per cent of what we’re supposed to get then we can tell you.But for now,I’ll tell you categorically that the money isn’t missing. They only moved it from the agency to another place pending when all these issues surrounding the agency are resolved. |
